  • Classic 160GB, Itunes and Windows Explorer all disagree on how much space is on the Ipod

    Hi,
I restored and resynced my Ipod Classic 160GB (about 2.5-3 years old) to see if it would help a problem I was having when plugging it into my stereo receiver via USB (the receiver was only recognizing it for four or five songs, then losing the connection).
It took a long time to restore the Ipod, due to the size of the collection and the number of MP3s that I had it convert to AACs.
The Ipod, which had had the exact same songs on it before with 2.7 GB left over, now claimed to have only 53 MB of empty space.  Looking at the drive in Windows Explorer, it had 2.6 GB.  In Itunes, the Ipod appeared to be 6 GB OVER its capacity.
So I took a chance and defragged and optimized the drive.  It made it better, but not fixed:
Now, the Ipod claims that it has 2.3 GB of empty space remaining; looking at it as a drive in Windows, it appears to have 2.6 GB remaining; Itunes, however, claims that the Ipod is totally full (2.5 GB OVER CAPACITY), so it won't add the final 3,000 songs or so to my Ipod.
I know that this all fit on the Ipod fine before the restore - with the same songs checked in my library, I had 2.7 GB left over.
Also, now Itunes reads the Ipod and says that it has 12.6 GB (!!!) of "Other."  I have no video, no photos, no contacts on the Ipod or in the library - nothing other than music and album cover images.  There's no way that I'd have 12 gigs that I didn't know about.
Should I assume that the drive is dying?  Is there anything that I can do to make this better?
    Thanks for your help.

Also, does an Ipod running on Windows need the "metadata_never_index" file?  I don't remember this being on the pod until recently, and from what I've read it's a file for connection to Macs.

  • I want to transfer tv bits on my ipod classic 160gb, itunes refuses the 2 "supported" formats .mp4 and .mkv saying ipod won't read them. is it possible? how?

i run windows 7 on a pc and get tv  via a tnt tuner, which can recrd moments (shows, information, ..)
i would like to watch these on my ipo classic
genius said format should be .mp4 or .mkv
    itunes refuse them
    help please!

I can import into itunes, cannot read them there, cannot transfer them to the ipod.
I got a free format converter from the net (format factory), choose the output format as ipod's

  • I wanted to sync my ipod classic to itunes when this note popped up " Iphone 153" was not copied to the ipod " The  ****** iPod" because it cannot be played on this iPod

Have no idea why this popped up, and now itunes will not sync my ipod , what do I do now?

    The Problem:
This could be due to a variety of situations.
    1) The podcast video file is not in a format supported by your iPod Nano, the iPod Nano 5th Generation supports video formats .m4v .mp4 or .mov in a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels.
    2) There isn't enough space on your iPod, check the size of the video compared to the space available on your iPod.
    3) The third possible problem is that the podcast provider may not have properly uploaded the video file.
    4) The video may not have been downloaded properly in iTunes.
    Possible Solutions:
    1) Update to the latest version of iTunes and check that the software on your iPod is up to date
    2) Try to re-download the podcast from iTunes
    3) go to the podcast provider website and see if they have a direct link to download the file.
Hope this helps solves your problem.

  • TS2755 My iPhone 4 says that I need to restore it every day, even after I have already restored it.  When I try to restart the phone after receiving the restore message, it then changes and says "activation required".  How do I fix this?

My iPhone 4 keeps having the "Restore Needed" message pop up on my phone.  I have restored my phone several times this week, and it still keeps happening.  The "Restore Needed" message pops up, so I immediately do a hard shut-down.  Once the phone restarts, the phone then says "Activation Required".  I keep shutting down and restarting the phone, and sometimes it snaps out of it, seemingly on its own.  Sometimes I have to go home and restore and activate my phone.  How do I fix this?  I'm 2.5 hours away from the closest Apple store and 1 hour away from the closest AT&T store.
    Thanks!
    Autumn

Make the time and take it to the Apple Store. Make an appointment first. Or you can call AppleCare and go for a mail in replacement.

  • Time Machine restore is grayed out even after selecting a file

(step one) I used Migration Assistant to restore a 2009 27" iMac with my Time Machine backup from my 2009 24" iMac that crashed.
(step two) I open Mail on the restored iMac, the inbox loads, my folders in "on my mac" are listed, but the email messages are not there. I click on one of the folders, go to Time Machine/browse other backup disks (which is the same time machine I used in step one) and I can see the old email messages when I "enter time machine".
(step three) When in the time machine interface, the tick marks are grayed out. The mail program is showing and I can select one of my folders and see the mail messages. However the restore button is grayed no matter if I select a folder or a particular email message.
(step four) I cancel out of the time machine interface, go to system prefs/time machine and mount this same disk as the new backup disk. The disk is 1 TB with 178 GB left from the old iMac. The time machine starts a backup and then stops with the error that there is not enough room to backup.
(step five) I go back to step 2 above, and have the same grayed restore button.
    Please help! Thanks

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an obsolete version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then select  Restore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
              File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Choose Apple Mail as the format and import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • IPod classic 160GB not detected under Windows Vista

    Hi,
I was trying to find something on that problem, but obviously all the problems with iPod and Vista are slightly different.
    Here's my story:
    Toshiba Portege R400
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
    iPod Classic 160GB
    iTunes 7.6.0.29
    USB 2.0
When I try to connect iPod to the computer NOTHING happens. Not that it starts searching for drivers or something like that. NOTHING.
The same iPod works fine with another computer but there's XP. I haven't tried it with different Vista so far.
USB ports are fine cause other devices like mouse or headphones work fine.
What else... I re-installed iTunes 3 times so far, didn't help. I also have the latest updates for Vista (at least Windows Update says that).
I know there are some workarounds to point different folder to look for drivers etc. But I don't even have the opportunity, cause nothing happens.
I've noticed one thing: when the iPod is plugged-in and I turn on the comp then, the iPod display flashes. It doesn't say it's connected but it reacts. And that's all. Later it comes back to normal "not working".
    Have anyone encountered similar problem?
    Regards
    Tomek

I have the same problem and I have Windows XP on 2 machines with iTunes. I plug the iPod in and it is not detected at all.
I plugged it into my girlfriends laptop (also XP) without iTunes and it is detected and works fine.
I have uninstalled iTunes and that does not help, it's like the iPod Classic 160GB is invisible on my 2 main machines...

  • Does anyone know how to activate Genius on an Ipod classic 160gb when it is already activated through 'Match'

Have started using Icloud and Match. Genius is working on my Ipads, Iphones and Ipod Touch but I cant set it up on my Ipod Classic 160gb bought last year. Keep going in circles as Genius is enabled but Ipod doesn't think so

    Hi Devon Andy,
Have you tried doing all the things listed in this guide? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3843
Genius on the iPod Classic might not work in the same way as on your other devices because it's not an internet-enabled device.
    Good Luck,
    Stefan

  • Crossfade And Reverb for Ipod Classic 160GB?

When is Apple going to make an update containing the Crossfade feature for the ipod classic 160GB? Also, is there any way to put a Reverb setting on the ipod classic 160GB? If so, how can I do that?

Probably never, and no, through strictly speaking these forums aren't really the place for speculation. I suspect that if crossfade were easily within the capability of the the existing hardware then it would already have been introduced. I'm not sure I see the case for putting reverb on what is essentially a personal playback device, and there certainly isn't any way you can bolt it on yourself.
If you'd like Apple to consider adding features to the iPod then the place to make the suggestions is iPod Feedback.

Ipod classic 160GB very slow sync and cannot connect to itunes store windows 7 ansd itunes 10.6.0.40. I have now been trying for 3 weeks to restore my iPod. Really frustrated, any ideas would be welcome.

Cured the problem! Reinstalled an earlier version of itunes from oldapps.com (version 10) now everything works as it should. I would suggest that if you are experiencing these problems that you do the same. I must say that it is a brave business decision on behalf of apple to effectively lock out all windows 7 users from their products and sales channels and I can only wish them luck in this very shortsighted policy.

  • After iTunes 10 upgrade iPod Classic not identified nor can I restore

Totally lost and don't know how to proceed. I have been using iTunes with my iPhone with never a problem. I received an iPod classic 160GB for Christmas last year and again, no problems, everything has been working great.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I upgraded to iTunes 10 and iTunes works great. I plugged in my iPhone 2G, no problem. I plugged in my iPod Classic 160GB and iTunes freezes, NOTHING happens at all. The album cover pictures don't even display until after I unplug the iPod Classic device.
I can see iPod device in "My Computer" but not in iTunes 10. In iTunes 10 the device doesn't appear at all until I give up and unplug the device. Then an error message pops up and the iPod is shown in the left column. The error says a file is missing and the device can't sync. I can't do anything except click OK. Then the error message goes away and the device drops out of the left column.
I searched for info on this problem, and have tried all of the suggestions.
It charges through USB with no problem except the battery is fully charged.
I tried 3 different USB ports on the PC.
    Tried restarting iTunes.
    Tried restarting the computer.
Went to Apple support website, tried the troubleshooting assistant:
    *Reset the iPod.
*Had already tried different USB ports.
*Had already tried restarting the PC.
*Removed iTunes 10 and all the software programs in the order specified.
*Went to Apple website and Re-installed iTunes.
*ITunes and iPhone still work fine, NO iPod Classic recognition in iTunes.
*Next option is to Restore but CAN'T because iTunes won't recognize the iPod to perform Restore. After reading the instructions, it appears that the iPod has to be connected to do this, and that's the problem -won't connect!
Is there anyone who can help? This didn'thappen until installed iTunes 10.
The iPod has 120GB of music on the device. The device is still working fine. I just can't get iTunes 10 to recognize the iPod Classic device.

After upgrading to iTunes 10, when I tried to connect my 80GB iPod Classic to my Mac Book Pro, the iPod was not recognized by either my computer or by iTunes. It would say "Connecting" on the iPod, but then it would click and show the Apple icon for a few seconds, then the cycle would repeat.
I finally decided to start the iPod in Disk Mode and then connect to my computer. When I did that, it would connect to my iTunes and I was able to sync.
I then went to Disk Utility and verified and repaired my iPod disk (no problems and nothing to repair.) On one discussion, the person then erased everything from his iPod and then restored. Rather than do that, I disconnected my iPod and re-connected it in the standard mode. This time, it was recognized by iTunes and I was able to sync.
Tried it again this morning and again it was able to sync. The next time, it may not, but right now it appears that might be a possible solution.

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Ipod Classic 160GB (2.0.4)
    Itunes (10.6)
    Mac OS Snow Leopard.
    Windows XP.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

Doublechecking. Have you tried the iTunes Store loads partially or returns "Error 306" or "Error 10054" section in the Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) section of the following document?
