IPod Classic 160GB looping restore.

After moving my iTunes library to another disk and confirming that files were fine, I plugged in my iPod to sync and charge it, and it said that it was in recovery mode and required a restore. No problem I thought. Had a little time, so clicked restore. It then reported that in 12 seconds, iPod would reset and be back to factory settings and I could then re-sync all of my files. When iPod resets, iTunes just reports that it's in recovery mode and suggests a restore. tried this loop about 5 times, and it still will not reset. If I eject, then plug back in. Same thing again. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I bought an iPod Classic 80GB two days ago. After purchasing I tried to set it up on the computer. As soon as I plugged it in it told me I needed to restore. (I never even got to use it once.) After going through what appeared to be a successful restore suddenly the exact same screen popped up thus casting me into the dreaded endless restore loop. I've read all the fixes for the same problem on older models. Nothing works. Anyone have suggestions? I live in Tibet, about a 2 hour flight away from the nearest apple service center.
I'm running Windows Vista (it's from my work - I was an iBook user until it died) and version 7.5.0.20 of iTunes.
I've tried the following fixes recommended in old conversation strings: reinstalling iTunes, downloading updates, renaming the drive, reformatting the iPod using Windows (it doesn't work on the iPod classic), the .bat file thing, disabling album art (it can't be done in this situation, but I tried emptying my iTunes library anyway), the various sequence of restarting the iPod at certain points, and other things i have forgotten.

  • IPod Classic 160GB Reboot loop BUT Disk Mode Works!

I have searched the internets and have yet to find someone with the same problem as me.
I have an iPod Classic 160GB which is stuck in a reboot loop (apple logo appears for 10 seconds, then restarts again). This happened shortly after using it as a disk to transfer a file from a Linux machine to a PC. This is probably not the culprit though as I have done this many times.
The reboot loop continues and neither windows nor a mac will recognize the iPod until I put it into disk mode. When I do this, it functions perfectly. I can move files to/from the disk, add songs in iTunes and then play them from the iPod. I am able to restore the iPod but when it tries to complete the process it goes into the reboot loop.
So, in brief, I have tried:
    1) Resetting the iPod (duh).
    2) Restoring it using iTunes while in disk mode on a Mac and a PC.
    3) same as above but manually choosing an older firmware version.
    4) Manually formatting the drive using a Mac and a PC.
So perhaps there is something wrong with the iPod that is not hard drive-related or there is something wrong with the firmware partition. Needless to say, I'm baffled.
Answers such as "Send it back to Apple." or "You're screwed, it's a brick." will not be considered helpful unless they accompanied by an explanation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Some more info:
I can get into diagnostic mode by pressing select and REV, but I can't force a disk scan by pressing MENU, SELECT, REV, and FFW.
    Any help?

Cured the problem! Reinstalled an earlier version of itunes from oldapps.com (version 10) now everything works as it should. I would suggest that if you are experiencing these problems that you do the same. I must say that it is a brave business decision on behalf of apple to effectively lock out all windows 7 users from their products and sales channels and I can only wish them luck in this very shortsighted policy.

  • My iPod Classic 160GB has lost all its music and won't sync or restore

My iPOD Classic 160GB has spontaneously lost all its music - approx. 5000 songs. One minute they were all there, now they're all gone - display says "No Music" although memory still shows 23GB in use? I tried to re-sync on iTunes but the iPod won't sync (error 1415) or restore (error 1439). As things currently stand,my iPod is just a very expensive paperweight - please can anybody help with this?

    hi lindsay
i understand you have all your music still in your itunes library?
Try the basic resetting of your ipod, also try another usb port.
Have you tried ,when ipod is connected, click on your ipods name, for example lindsays ipod, another window should open up and you can see  summary, click on the sync box ,bottom right hand corner, see if this helps.
Or you could ,when you have itunes open, click for updates.
    hope this may help you

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Ipod Classic 160GB (2.0.4)
    Itunes (10.6)
    Mac OS Snow Leopard.
    Windows XP.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
    If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • IPod Classic won't restore or format

My iPod Classic 160gb won't restore. When I connect it, iTunes says it's corrupted and needs to be restored. When I try to restore, iTunes tries to install the update and then restore. Then iPod resets, like it was restored, but it isn't - there're all the files that there were. When I try to restore it in disc mode, iTunes just can't restore it and shows error 1439.
I tried to format it, but Windows says, that it cannot format it. Both in "normal" and disc mode.
When I try to open it i, it says to insert disc.
iPod is visible both in My Computer and iTunes. In iTunes - as corrupted. My Computer says it has 0kb.
iPod itself works fine - it plays music and do other stuff that iPod should do.
    What should I do?
I have Windows 7 Home Premium.

brand new ipod classic 160gb will not restore. have tried all steps with no fix. Also tried steps on a different computer with same results. anu help?

if you own a mac try to re format the disc to journal.
If you are on a windows like me, try to reformat the disc to NTFS. Then it will display that you need to restore as the ipod is in recovery mode. It restored with success. and voila, brand new working ipod.

  • ITunes Refuses to Eject My iPod Classic 160GB

I purchased one of the newest iPod Classic 160GB models and while it originally connected great when I connected to iTunes, now, iTunes absolutely refuses to eject my iPod everytime I connect.
I have to eject my iPod through Windows Explorer and this happens everytime I connect it to my computer. Does anyone have a fix for this?

My computer is running  Windows 7 Pro SP1 with all updates and I do not see anything in that article other than perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes that helps.  I do not have any third party apps related to Apple.  I do have one or two third party applications that work with Microsoft Office products and they were installed long before iTunes stopped working, so I do not believe that they have anything to do with iTunes's problems.
I have verified that there are no third party apps working with iTunes. ITunes only freezes when I attempt to disconnect the ipod. It d

  • Cover flow on ipod classic 160gb 6th gen

I was just given an ipod classic 160gb 6th gen, it the previous owners music on it, so I hooked it up to itunes & restored it & updated it to factory settings & put my name on it. I noticed in cover flow mode, that albums are doubled, one for the entire album, then the album cover again for individual songs. when I go to album view, the albums show up ok, there are no double ups there. I also notice when I scroll down to the now playing with the split screen, it comes up blank with no cover art. I had an 80gb 5th gen ipod & everything seemed ok. I wiped it clean with a restore as well to start fresh. It took about an hour & a half to sync over my music library from my external hard drive to my new 160 gb 6th gen ipod. It seems to play ok, so far, I just got it today, & I have been playing it on & off to try it out.
I am running itunes 9.0.1.8. Also when I plug in my ipod, itunes ops up with an update message for me to update, I click ok for the update, but nothing seems to happen, so I do not know if itunes has updated or not.

Ok, should I try the trialing X, for those persistent multi covers that do not respond to adjusting the track names as first suggested? I went to your tips page & saw the graphic for that. Is it ok to just leave the Xs in or must they be removed?
iTunes tries to be "smart" and only updates the tag if it thinks you've changed something. Adding the X is a temporary measure to force iTunes to acknowlege that something has changed and thereby hopefully merge the album. Once it's done you can get rid of the unecessary trailing Xs.
I also looked at your image for handling multi discs, will this group multi discs together in cover flow?
    Yes, that's the point.
& when one is playing a multi disc set, will the ipod just go straight to the next disc (disc 2) in playback as though it were one single album?
    Yes.
or will playback stop at the last track of disc 1 & then one would have to select disc 2 to play.
    No.
Will the multi disc set still come up as 2 different discs to selct to play? I may not want to start with disc 1.
No. You can always chose which track to start playing.
One of the albums I was having trouble with multi covers was part of a 2 disc set, disc 1 was credited to the main artist, but had guest artists for 1/2 the tracks, disc 2 was by the same artist with no guest artists. I have now gotten disc 1 to show as a single cover in cover flow by checking off part of a compilation in the info panel, but it does not appear next to disc 2 in cover flow.
Again setting *Part of a compilation" is the wrong approach. Set *Part of a compilation* to No, put your guest artist info. into the track titles (or any other scheme you choose) and make sure that the Artist value is consistent for all tracks.
on an off note, I notice when I press my ipod button or navigate any of its features, there is a slight grinding noise, I can hear the hard drive, when I bring it close to my ear, it sounds like a chewing mouse is this ok/normal to hear slight noises? it seems to be functioning alright. It is pretty responsive.
Yes, the noise from disc activity is normal. My iPod lives in a silcone sleeve which probably muffles it a bit and most of the time I'll have already have music playing so I'm rarely conscious of the noise of hard drive activity but it is there.

  • Problem with my iPod classic 160gb - making funny noises, and no download

Hi, At the same point every time i try to put music on my ipod classic 160gb, it begins to make a funny noise, and itunes and the ipod freezes. I have to disconnect it unproperly, and the message "The ipod disk could not be read from or written to", but my old music still remains. So i tried to restore the ipod on my macbook, but i still have the problem.
This is the 4th Ipod classic 160gb i have had, and there has been a harddisk problem with all of them, so this could be the problem, but the funny click-clack sound is new to this one.
Anybody in here have experience with such kind of problems?
Hope to get the problem solved soon.
    Oliver Nash, DK.

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?
