IPod Classic 160GB - Lost Of Music & Video Files When Connected To iTunes

I currently have the latest model of the Apple iPod Classic. It's been working great until I decided to connect it to my laptop, to use iTunes. I've done this so many times before without having any problems. Until recently that is.
My laptop and iTunes are able to read my iPod, but when it shows up on iTunes the music and video section disappears. Only 'Other' and 'Free' shows on the ipod's GB stats, with only 148 GB left to use. Before this happened, I had only 110 GB or so to use, maybe even less, since I had tons of music and video files stored. Also downloaded games, which also disappeared.
I thought iTunes was the problem, but when I disconnected my iPod, I searched through it manually, and found that all of music, videos, and games are gone, it's like I didn't put anything in it. The only thing that stayed, was the notes, other than that everything vanished. Is there a way to retrieve my old music, video, and game files back? I tried looking into the hidden files of the ipod itself, and went into 'ipod_control' then to music, but every single folder was empty, all 'F' folders.
I am deeply frustrated about this. I really hope there are solutions out there to help me, without having to re do everything.
Forgot to add, don't know if this will help but, when I connected the iPod to iTunes, there was a pop up message saying something like 'CheeziPuffs cannot be found or played on your iPod' I have never had this pop up message before when the ipod worked perfectly on iTunes.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes I get an error code and sometimes I don't. I tried to get apple to do something about it however mine is also out of warranty so no luck. I have read about a lot a people having syncing issues like this with their ipod classic and I am kind of amazed that apple is not willing to fix this issue. If I get it fixed or have any luck with apple I will post here. Good Luck.

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.

  • I have a iPod classic 80GB (2008) which no longer plays or connects to iTunes

My iPod worked faultlessly until recently when it suddenly began having difficulties connecting to iTunes and the wall charger. I managed to reset the iPod and it worked as usual for 2 days but then it decided to revert back to not working. When connected to the computer, the screen flickers with an Apple logo every 2 seconds but there is no other connectivity. Pressing the iPod central button and Menu together brings up the logo for a few seconds but makes no difference. I have changed connectors with no difference.
Now it is completely dead unless i connect it to a radio with an iPod dock. Then it works as normal and states it is fully charged! I can navigate the Menu and select songs. However, as I can't connect to iTunes I can't add any new songs and I can't take it anywhere with me.
It has been well taken care of since new and lives in a protected cover. What is wrong and How do I fix?

    Hi Luckytimmytot,
Thanks for your reply and letting me know it did not work. It sounds like a different direction may be warranted here. Due to the nature of your issue you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources:

  • Ipod Classic will no longer play video podcasts after upgrade to iTunes 10.

I have a 120GB Classic. I used to be able to play video podcasts just fine. Since upgrading to iTunes 10.0 in September I can see Podcasts with a little video symbol next to them on the iPod, but when I click on them the screen goes black for a couple of seconds, then flips back to the menu. If I copy the Podcast to a playlist, I get audio but no video, as always. The video podcast plays fine on the PC. I've tried "converting to iPod or iPhone version" with no success. I've Googled this problem and found many others with this issue, none with their question answered. Does anyone know if this is an issue acknowledged by Apple, and if so, do they plan to fix it? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
    Thanks.

  • After updating itunes to 10.5.3, two of my ipod classics no longer are listed under "devices" when connected to the computer. They are visable in windows as ipod but i cannot access them.  there is nothing i can do to get itunes to recognize them.. help

ive tried restarting the apple service, wiping the ipods, restoring one of the ipods when itunes found it the first time but that never completed (Itunes froze out eventually) and now itunes does not recognize either device.  Additionally, itunes works fine when no ipods are connected, but when i connect these two classic ipods itunes freezes non-responsive.  there is no now way to connect the ipods to itunes and there is no music either.  ive seen others with similar issues (appearing in windows but not itunes) but all of the suggestions are not working.  any help would be appreciated.
    thank you.

iPod Classic are high drain USB devices, I hope you are not trying to connnect them simultaneously to iTunes, which will definitely hang your USB Host controller, thereby freeze iTunes.
But here is an Apple Support Article on using multiple iPods for iTunes.

  • IPod Classic 160gb Video sync problem

My iPod Classic will only sync certain video files, files around 2gb or smaller. I have Quite a few digital copies and I would like to be able to synch all of them at one point or another. I have a few video files that are around 4gb and when dragged to the sync que it drops into the device, starts to sync, syncs without transferring the video file, and says sync complete without error message.
I also have digital copies of Game of Thrones that I would like to load on to there but they do the same thing. I have tried in the general sync settings to allow the choose your files option as well as the general sync all options with no previal. Its like the iPod will not sync any of the television shows at all. not even a special feature episode.
I have iTunes version 11.1.4.62 with iPod system version 2.0.4 running on a windows 7 laptop. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your helpful comments.

  • Can't sync iPod classic 160GB

I recently purchased an iPod classic 160GB. I am running Windows XP with SP2,
iTunes 7.4.3.1, QuickTime 7.2 (I am hesitant to install iTunes 7.5 due to known problems with QuickTime 7.3). I had to go to my local Apple Store to get the latest iPod Software Update installed (56.6 MB is pretty huge; this Update for my iPod video was only 6.2 MB).
Problem Number 1: iTunes cannot successfully download an iPod Software Update (1.0.2) if the download has been Paused and then Resumed; iTunes loses track of the size of the module it was working on. (If there are buttons in the application to pause and resume the download, they should work correctly.) (This happens with both the iPod classic and the iPod Video.)
Problem Number 2: I cannot successfully sync my Music Library (40GB) with my iPod classic. I actually got to listen to a song after 4 days of trying to perform this download (only 800 MB of my music made it into the iPod successfully.) iTunes froze up when the iPod was first attached and also while trying to perform the sync. (I also have and iPod Video (30GB) and it works fine although a little slow.) The Genius at my Apple Store was able to load the iPod successfully using one of their BootCamp machines since my Music Library resides on an external hard disk. (And it only took 4 hours of work to get this far.)
Device Manager in Windows also shows an additional driver (iPod Driver) in the USB section with the iPod classic attached (it is not shown when using the iPod video). Both iPods show as Drive J: in the My Computer window.
Note to Apple Management: When a customer pays $250 to $350 for and iPod, the customer has heightened expectation levels, especially if he/she has had success with prior successful products. Especially since the classic is the 6th generation machine. Please get on this Apple!!!!!

I solved my problem!! I just loaded my iPod classic 160GB with 40GB of music and one video file.
I upgraded to iTune 7.5.0.20 and iPod Software 1.0.2 with no major ill effects. (I had to install iTunes 7.5 a second time because it told me to.) Windows XP is at SP 2 level and appears to be fine.
I tried using msconfig to stop initally loading anything except iTunesHelper and qttask. Nothing major broken yet. This is good news.
I tried loading over one album at a time (Using the Manual button in the options) and iTunes started freezing up at weird places (but it usually came back after a while.)
So I set the iPod into Disk Mode and I went to the Summary screen and only checked the "Enable Disk Use" box. (The top box was already checked.)
I Clicked on the Music tab and chose Sync Music and All songs and playlists (I would suggest you try something less to test this; my whole list took almost 12 hours to copy over. But I'm running with 1.1 USB ports). It ran very smoothly and iTunes only got fussy when I asked it to eject the iPod, but it eventually did it.
After it said I could disconnect, I got the iPod out of Disk Mode by using Menu/Center buttons and presto, it was up and working. All my playlist present and accounted for.
It'll take me a couple of days to find any problems (I have 31 days of music to listen to), but it's looking good.
Thank you to all who have listened to my problems and provided help!!
Apple has managed to keep this customer.

  • Problem with my iPod classic 160gb - making funny noises, and no download

Hi, At the same point every time i try to put music on my ipod classic 160gb, it begins to make a funny noise, and itunes and the ipod freezes. I have to disconnect it unproperly, and the message "The ipod disk could not be read from or written to", but my old music still remains. So i tried to restore the ipod on my macbook, but i still have the problem.
This is the 4th Ipod classic 160gb i have had, and there has been a harddisk problem with all of them, so this could be the problem, but the funny click-clack sound is new to this one.
Anybody in here have experience with such kind of problems?
Hope to get the problem solved soon.
    Oliver Nash, DK.

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?

I wrote this long time ago, have a read and see whether it can be soloved
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

I want to use my IPOD Classic 160gb for notepad entries in addition to the music and books I listen to. It is set to "Open ITunes when connected to computer" and "manually manage music and videos".  How can I do that without losing some of the features of those two?   I just want to add a feature.  Thanks

Settings>Store (or iTunes & App Stores if you are running iOS6)>Apple ID. Tap your son's ID and sign out. Sign in with your ID and password.
You shouldn't lose the music, but if you try to update any apps that you bought with the family ID, you will have to use that password that is linked with that ID in order to update.
Avoid downloading past purchased content with the old ID if you can since you will associate the iPad with the old ID for 90 days and you will lock yourself out of your own, new ID for that period of time. Read more about associated devices in iTunes here.
