IPod classic (160gb) not recognized by computer

I have a 7th gen 160gb iPod classic which isn't recognized by my computer. I recently replaced the hard drive and battery and it seemed to go off without a hitch. After I put the front plate back on the screen lit up and everything was working. I connected it to my computer and synced it to my iTunes library, although it only would only sync 140 songs out of my 6000 song library. I connected my iPod a few more times and eventually the computer stopped recognizing the USB device. I restarted my computer, my iPod, I tried a new USB cable, and I tried plugging it into my other computer. No matter what my iPod wouldn't get recognized. When I plug it in the screen lights up and it charges but my computer doesn't recognize my iPod as a device.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

My iPod Classic 160GB is recognized by computer, and goes through sync process, but still has old stuff...
I feel like there must be an issue with the library location, but I don't know how to correct that.  My Dad recently wiped my computer and deleted Windows XP and installed Windows 7.  I don't know what he did, but my iTunes library is still intact it seems. However, I've added quite a few podcasts that I'd like to sync to my iPod.  When I connect it, it goes through the sync process, but ends quickly and says its safe to disconnect.  None of the new podcasts are on there though.
Also, there was something really wrong with my iTunes account.  When I went to buy something from the store, it wouldn't accept my password, and when I went to reset it, it wouldn't recognize my birthdate and month (I had the correct username).  I ended up creating a new account and purchasing a song.  This time, it did sync the new song onto my iPod, but not the podcasts I'm trying to sync.
As far as the library location, is there anything particular that has to be included in that library in order for it to be recognized by iTunes when you sync?  Awhile back (before my Dad worked on my computer), I had changed the folder location to my external hard drive, but in researching, I saw that I still had in another drive some folders with music that is currently on my iPod.  So it looks like I have some stuff on two different drives... Maybe this has something to do with it not syncing right?
I did check, and my Firewall doesn't have iTunes blocked.
As you can see, I'm not very experienced with all of this... Sorry for the confusion.  If you are interested in helping me and have any questions, please let me know.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me... I desperately want to be able to listen to my podcasts, as I'm a stay-at-home Mom of 4 little ones, and the podcasts are kind of an "escape" for me when the children are napping or playing. :-)
Thank you in advance for your help!

Oh my goodness!!  I am absolutely thrilled right now B-rock!!  I don't know how I missed it, but when I went back to change the setting like you mentioned, I noticed that the very top box that says "Sync Podcasts" wasn't checked!  I have no idea why... But my heart started to race when I checked that box and all of a sudden it started syncing all my podcasts!!  It's gonna take a long time (I have 385 of them!), but I am just so happy you helped me with this problem.  Thank you SO much!

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.

  • I installed a ipod shuffle, named it differently, now my ipod classic is not recognized by computer or itunes.  How do i fix?

I installed an ipod shuffle with different name.  Now my ipod classic is no longer recognized by computer or itunes.  It appears that Itunes decided that I had replaced the classic with a shuffle.  Classic battery doesnt seem to want to charge, and cannot restore.

  • Ipod Classic (160GB) not recognized by iTunes on Win7 64bit

when I connect the iPod classic to my PC (64 bit Win7), I receive a driver software installation error message. Apple Mobile Device USB Driver indicates FAILED. Device Manager shows the "Apple MObile Device USB Driver" within the USB controller section with a "yield" symbol, which of course indicates a driver problem. I have followed the online troubleshooting steps, including trying other USB ports and even re-installing iTunes. The same error message however appears.  It was not that long ago that all was working just fine on this system. What next ?

Hey I'm not any way a representative of Apple or Microsoft but I'll see if I can help (and any advice I give may or may not work):
I think the problem with USB drivers is that they partially install then get messed up. Occasionally that leaves your USB drivers messed up but Windows thinking it's ok.
The way I'd go about this kind of problem is to uninstall the USB drivers as though they never existed using third party software such as USBDeview.
You can download the 64 bit version here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
More info (if you want to find out how it works): http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
Using USBDeview, you may want to uninstall any drivers that are causing the issue. Make sure you uninstall the correct drivers that you recognise (from the description).

  • My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.

My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.  The Device Manager lists it as an Unknown Device.  I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but it had no affect.  The odd thing is that our other iPod (160 GB Classic) is recognized on the same computer using the same USB cable.  When I plug the ipod in question into another PC, the PC seems to recognize the iPod and lists it in Windows Explorer (iTunes is not installed on this machine).  There seems to be something out of wack with this PC/iPod combo.  Any thoughts on what I can do to try to resolve this issue?  I tried all of the steps listed here, but they didn't help me.  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?

  • How do I sync my Ipod Classic 160gb with my new computer (windows 8). It synced with my old computer (windows XP) but not with my new one (windows8)

How do I sync my Ipod Classic 160gb with my new computer (Windows8).? It synced with my old computer (WindowsXP) but will not do so on the new computer?

    Hi Lechwe,
I had this issue recently, due to changing HD for an SSD.
In my case, since the library in my iPod was synced to the HD it was not syncing to the library in the SSD, though they were the same (had the same contents).
I found there's this checkbox in iTunes > iPod > [Settings] Music, called "Sync Music". Mine was unchecked, I guess due to iPod being synced to the old library. I marked the checkbox and clicked then in Sync. iTunes asked me if I was sure I wanted to sync the iPod with the "new" library, i clicked yes, and the it started determining the song to sync. Since the library was essentially the same (just a couple songs more in the new one), it synced the couple new songs and that was it.
    Hope it helps!
    Regards,
    Awlo.

  • IPod classic 160GB not detected under Windows Vista

    Hi,
I was trying to find something on that problem, but obviously all the problems with iPod and Vista are slightly different.
    Here's my story:
    Toshiba Portege R400
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
    iPod Classic 160GB
    iTunes 7.6.0.29
    USB 2.0
When I try to connect iPod to the computer NOTHING happens. Not that it starts searching for drivers or something like that. NOTHING.
The same iPod works fine with another computer but there's XP. I haven't tried it with different Vista so far.
USB ports are fine cause other devices like mouse or headphones work fine.
What else... I re-installed iTunes 3 times so far, didn't help. I also have the latest updates for Vista (at least Windows Update says that).
I know there are some workarounds to point different folder to look for drivers etc. But I don't even have the opportunity, cause nothing happens.
I've noticed one thing: when the iPod is plugged-in and I turn on the comp then, the iPod display flashes. It doesn't say it's connected but it reacts. And that's all. Later it comes back to normal "not working".
    Have anyone encountered similar problem?
    Regards
    Tomek

I have the same problem and I have Windows XP on 2 machines with iTunes. I plug the iPod in and it is not detected at all.
I plugged it into my girlfriends laptop (also XP) without iTunes and it is detected and works fine.
I have uninstalled iTunes and that does not help, it's like the iPod Classic 160GB is invisible on my 2 main machines...

  • My Ipod Classic is not recognized by my PC but is recognized on my laptop.

    Hardware: Ipod Classic 32
Software: Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3
    Issue:
If I plug the ipod to any USB on the pc I get a notice that says "USB device not recognized"- If I go to the drivers and uninstall, and then reset, it will recognize the unit- briefly flashing the red "do not disconnect" sign and then do the same thing stateing that it's unrecognized.
However, If I plug the ipod to one of the laptops, there is no issue at all. (I've done the disc mode as well)
I went so far as to uninstall all the drivers and reset them all and then the ipod was recognized but my keyboard was disabled!  So, I reset again and everything works but the ipod is still not recognized.
Additionally, I have a slot where I would plug a camera memory card and it also stopped working around the same time the ipod did. The odd part is that if I plug the camera via usb, I can upload pics with no issue- just can't use the slot for the memeory card.
I was thinking that this is an issue with the driver but it seems intermittent as I have left the ipod plugged a for a while a few times and sometimes it will just start working out of the blue.
I am not sure what else I can do. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Ssssssss sounds whenever the letter 's' is sung on my iPod Classic but not on my computer -

sssssssssssssssss sounds whenever the letter 's' is sung on my new iPod Classic but not in the itunes library on my computer - any suggestions?

Do you mean the s sound is too prominent? If so, check the EQ setting on your iPod. If it's set to something like "speech" or "treble booster", turn it off and see if that makes things better for you.

  • My iPod classic is not recognized by my computer or iTunes

My iPod is not recognized by my computer or iTunes. It worked fine a few months ago but now it doesn't even sync. I tried everything from turning it on/off, reinstalling iTunes, checking the connectivity issues and etc. After going through the connectivity test the only thing I found odd was that it said that the iPod classic running firmware 1.1.2 is not connected. Could that be the issue? And if so, how can I get that firmware running again?

I have the same issue with my ipod classic, and have gone through these steps. However, when i come to the step where it says to reinstall: "
Next, open the new version of iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer.
Select your iPod in the source list and click "Check for Update" under the Summary tab.   iTunes will check to see if your iPod needs to be updated and perform the update for you. "
there is no ipod listed in the source list to check for any updates under the summary tab. Itunes just DOES NOT see the ipod at all. And this is where I am stuck....further instructions PLEASE!!! Thank you....
