Ipod Classic (2009 Version) screen is dark.

My ipod classic 160 (2009 version) screen is dark and I cannot see the songs being played on the screen. The settings for the Backlight and Brightness is set to 100%. Please help!

Hello straw189,
It's likely hardware related meaning your iPod will need to be serviced either by Apple or a 3rd party repair company.

    Greetings MarkSaved1989,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPod only shows a blinking screen, first try to reset it using the steps at this link:

  • Is it possible to install a 160 GB Toshiba slim-fit HDD from an iPod Classic 2009 model into a iPod 5th Gen Late-2006 model that originally had a 30 GB Toshiba drive?

Is it possible to install a 160 GB Toshiba slim-fit HDD from an iPod Classic 2009 model into a iPod 5th Gen Late-2006 model that originally had a 30 GB Toshiba drive?
I have had my 30 GB iPod video for about 7 years, it was a gift and has served me well. Unfortunately it was in my pocket when I brushed up against a very powerful magnet which latched onto the unit and scrambled the hardware. Sad iPod icon.
I was told I probably need to replace the HD in order to get it back to working order. What I am wondering is, would I be able to replace it with a larger capacity drive so long as I got a unit that was slim enough to fit into the casing?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://gigaom.com/2011/07/26/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
Which Windows version are you trying to install? If I remember right, you can't use windows 8 on these older machines.
Other than that it's hard to say what could have gone wrong. I can only suggest going through the steps again carefully and making sure everything worked the way it should.
Have a look at this article too for a slighly more verbose instruction on making a drive bootable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/

my Ipod keeps going back to sad face... it wont power on, enter menu, play music, nothing. Does anybody else have this problem? This is about Ipod Classic/older version

+I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump.+
I'm curious about this point. Is there any flash of a blue screen at any point here? (That's a more familiar sort of thing to be seeing prior to the system doing a restart after a serious error.)

  • How to transfer photos from iPod classic (earlier version) to my mc

I just brought a new imac and I am trying to transfer my photos from my ipod classic earlier version (software version 1.3, 30GB) to my iMAC.

The photos syned to the iPod are very low res versions of the original photos, optimized to fit on the iPod's small screen while taking up as little space in storage as possible.  They are stored in a single special database file.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer them to the Mac, and if you could, they would look bad blown up to a larger size on the iMac's screen.
There is a setting on the iPod's Photos screen in iTunes (a checkbox) that says Include full-resolution photos.  IF that setting was checked when you synced the photos to the iPod, you can Enable disk use and find the originial full res photo files in the Photos folder (on the iPod).
Otherwise, you should transfer the original photo files from your previous computer, if possible.

  • 160GB iPod Classic (2007 version)

I have the 6th generation, 160GB iPod classic (2007 version). Whenever I get to 2 specific songs, they will only play for about 5-10 seconds and then skip to the next song. It doesn't do that when I play those songs on my Mac. I've done several complete restores of the iPod and it does it on the same 2 songs every time. I have about 113GB of music, video and photos on it. The interface is also very sluggish. Why won't Apple update the firmware on this thing? It's barely 4 years old, yet OS X 10.5 from that same year has received updates more recently than the last update to my iPod software. If the only real difference between mine and the newer models are Genius and Genius Mixes, why can't I use the latest software on mine? Is it really that hard to support a 4 year old iPod that I bought to support my large music library for many years? I'd eventually buy an iPod Touch to replace it, but not until it's big enough for my entire library (which won't happen for at least another year). Seriously Apple, where is the love?

There are basically two reasons why firmware gets updated.
It's unstable, so it gets an update to fix it. The Classic's firmware is stable, that's why it doesn't get updated.
To give the iPod more features. Perhaps the iPod Classic has all the features its hardware can cope with. As for Genius (which I do not use and have not even tried) - surely that's in iTunes, not on the iPod. Therefore, updating the iPod's firmware would achieve nothing and since you now state that you "don't even care much for Genius", why bring it up in the first place?
To turn on Genius (in iTunes), go to Edit/Preferences/General and turn on the tick box named Genius.
    sigh...
Oh, and with 113GB of music on your iPod, I'm not surprised the interface is sluggish (or less responsive than with just 10GB of music).

  • Low Volume Ipod Classic 2009 from USA?

    Hi,
I just purchased the new Ipod Classic in October in New York City at the Apple Store. Now, back at home in Switzerland, I loaded the Classic via Itunes. Now I have the feeling that the Classic has a much lower volume than my old 5.5G Ipod Video (from the USA, too. Without EU volume cut). Is this possible? Is the new classic more quiet than the older ones? Firmware problem? May I have the EU Version althoug I bought it in New York? Is there a way to figger out via serial number etc. if my classic is an US or an EU model?
Does anyone, who lives in the US, the same impression about the volume?
Note: both Ipods are filled with exactly the same files and "maximum volume" is set to max in both models.
Thanks a lot for some ideas.
    Gero

Does anyone, who lives in the US, the same impression about the volume?
My 2009 160GB USA unit is very loud.
I think that your computer tells the iPod that you are in the EU and it locks in a lower volume.
In the EU the 'State' and not the individual controls the volume of YOUR music.
Talk about "over governed". I guess I'm lucky that the "sound Police" didn't confiscate my USA iPod on a recent trip to Europe.
    Good Luck.

  • I have an ipod classic where the screen lights up but is completely blank so am not able to access any music, playlist or menu etc.Any idea how to fix this

I have an Ipod Classic and currently the screen lights up but no information appears - just a blank back lit screen.Any ideas how to rectify or is it beyond saving?

    Hi mafiose15,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
You can find the instructions in this article:

  • Windows XP sp3 + iTunes 8 + New iPod Classic 120GB = Blue Screen Of Death

    HELP
My PC has just upgraded itself with Windows XP Service Pack 3, I have downloaded iTunes 8, and just today bought a new iPod Classic 120GB so I could enjoy the new Genius facility (my old iPod was a 20GB model from 2005). However I keep getting the Blue Screen Of Death whenever I plug in the new iPod, even if I start-up the computer with the iPod connected.
I've read other threads about this topic, but I've only seen people reporting this issue with Vista, not XP.
    - I'm thinking of uninstalling and re-downloading iTunes 8. Will it retain all playlists, album artwork etc.?
    - I'm also thinking of trying to connect with the iPod manually set to disk mode. Will this help to begin with?
Anyone got a fix for this problem yet....Apple?

As a follow-up to my questions above, I've now tried uninstalling and then re-installing iTunes 8 direct from the Download link at Apple.com. I still get the BSOD. I also tried with the new iPod 120GB manually set to disk mode. Again, still I get the BSOD. I also unplugged a couple of other USB peripherals from my PC (writing tablet, card reader), checked for any more Windows XP Updates, but still get the BSOD.
    Anyone got any more ideas?

  • Ipod classic 30gb white screen-whirring

hi all. hopefully i can get some help on here although im afraid i already know the answer....ok older ipod classic. 30gb. worked great for yrs. then started freezing up more and more. wouldnt hold a chrarge very long. then one day plugged into kitchen dock and got a white flashing screen with a very loud whirring noise. no face or instructions on screen. so i thought mabey bad battery. got one from amazon. installed, came right on worked great. was told to run battery down all the way so it can be charged fully when 1st recharge comes around. plugged into dock, same thing, white screen, whirring. so, then i thought the hard drive, got one again from amazon (used, they dont mention that) installed this morning. put in dock, same thing. so am i looking at a logic board? or mother board? im aproaching the limit of the cost effectness?? of replacing parts now....ps if in fact its a bad mother, can i use the "new" hard drive and battery for our ipod 160gb??  thank you for your response.

I have the same problem that you do. I have tried all, restart, reboot, restore to its original settings and nothing. I have tried using the battery to run it off and I have charged it again and nothing happened. The equipment reproduces music, but with a white screem is imposible to operate it. I guess I will try to use the warranty, but I live abroad the US. If you have any progress, please let me know. Good luck, regards, ajlorenzos

  • Ipod classic 30gb white screen

Ok its my friends moms ipod classic. About 2 years ago she plugged it into her ipod sound dock and it brought up a white screen with a small ipod on it with a :( that said "www.apple.com/support/ipod. She gave it to me last night to try to fix it. I plugged it into my ipod sound dock to charge it, and it said "very low battery" for about an hour, then the white support screen came up. I tried running diagnostics, and the hard drive test passed. I plugged it into the computer, and nothing happened. However, I was able to get it to connect by holding select + menu, then select + play. I backed up her music, and opened itunes. It said something about a restore, so I did it, it downloaded the firmware, and then disconnected and brought up the white screen.I tried doing it again and the same thing happened. I ran the diagnostics test again to check the battery and here is the result for BatteryA2D: Battery=427 (3998mV) Menu to exit. ADC Test:
    ID=0x57
    VCC=427 (3998mV)
    Battery=423 (3991mV)

    Charge=0
    ACC=255 (2550mV)
Hard drive SMART Data: SMART not supported
    Flash Checksum: Checksum=0x0CFF
    M25 Diagnostics 0.7.    PLL: 0
    Completed
    SDRAM Full Test
    RUN:     BL on
    PASS:    BL blink
    FAIL:     BL off
    Reset to continue.
    What should I do?
The ipod is in great condition for its age. There's no dents in it and there's barely any scratches. Is it a hardware issue or a software issue? Thanks. If you need pictures or a video of what its doing, contact me at [email protected]
It is a 30gb ipod classic.

    See these troubleshooting articles.
    My iPod is sad.
iPod displays a "sad iPod" icon.
What does this picture on my iPod mean?
Also, there is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon or the folder and ! icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

  • Problem with playing video via composite av cable on iPod classic 2009 model 160gb

Things went well, after  purchasing the new Ipod classic 160 gb i tryied to watch movies on my LED TV via Composite AV Cable.  I did it once. Everything worked correctly & I was able to see my photoes, watch movies.  Today i tryied to connect it again to the TV via av composite cable. The TV Out was switched on. But i could hear only audio. No video. I tryied all possible configs for Ipod an for tv set & no result. If i choose on my Ipod to ask me  first if i want to switch on the AV out, the Ipod shows me a message that i should connect the video accessory (but it  is already connected!). If i choose simply to switch on the TV Out without asking  me it will play either sound only on the TV, either the playback on the Ipod is ending after 20 seconds of show time.
Without AV Cable connected Ipod is working normaly in terms of video playback. Also the device is working normally with the ITunes.
Please help. Where is the problem. The AV composite cable? TV set? Or iPod itself?

    Hi Rusbug,
I am having the same issue with my iPod Classic 160gb not playing video on the TV via Composite cable as you posted in march!
did you get a solution for the issue??
desperate to know what to do next.
    thanks
