Ipod Classic 20GB charging problem

Hi!
My girlfriend has this old (4th Gen?) Ipod Classic, bought from eBay, and the battery won't charge. It have been not in use for about 4 months, maybe that's the reason. However, when I do the reset it shows the low battery icon. So i put it to electrical outlet to charge. Then next screen shows apple logo for few secs and then comes that annoying "put it to electrical outlet"-icon. I've been charging the ipod over 24 hours and still nothing happens. When I take it to my hand for look the status it shows the same Charge!-icon. Is it just because the battery's life has expired? Is there anything to do?
Please help, being sorry for my rusty English!

Hello Juki65,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is it just because the battery's life has expired?
More than likely yes, especially considering its a 20 GB model, which came out many many years ago.
Is there anything to do?
There are a couple of options in this situation.
1. Bring your iPod to the nearest Apple Retailer and trade it in for a 10% discount on a new iPod.
2. Set up a service request and have Apple replace the battery for you. However, this can be quite expensive, so I would suggest reading on.
3. Have a third party company replace the battery for you. Just do a simple Google search for "iPod battery replacement" and you should receive a plethora of sites that can assist you.
4. Lastly, you could always opt to replace the battery yourself. There are several businesses that seller replacement batteries for your iPod and ifixit.com offers excellent step-by-step guides for the actual replacement procedure.
Hope this helps.

  • Ipod Classic 20gb charging, but "Unknown" to the computer

My Ipod Classic 20gb is charging when i plug it into the computer, but the computer will not see it as a device. I have tried putting it into disk mode, but the computer just says "Unknown USB Device." All I am trying to do is wipe the Ipod so I can put in a bunch of new music onto it so I am willing to wipe it.

To be of any assistance, I need the following info
Which version of itUnes are you using?
What is your iPod software version, as shown in the Itunes summary page? 1.1.2 or 2.0.4
Are you running Mac or Windows?
Have you tried the Hard Reset?
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

  • IPod classic (20gb) no longer recognised on laptop.

Hi. My iPod classic 20gb is no longer recognised on my laptop and consequently can't download from iTunes etc. I've tried trouble shooting tips with no joy. My origninal cable is not great but still able to charge using it most of the time. I have tried with my iPhone cable but with no response. Does the iPod classic (20gb) need a specific cable? Thanks for any help.

    Hello Wraggs,
I had the same problem with the same model iPod.  At first my laptop would not recognize the device; after a while it also stopped taking a charge at all.
First see that you're using a cable of at least 1 amp output.  (Many are only .5a.)  Even though my iPod has been repaired (see below), I still have to use the 1a to get it to charge and connect.
If that doesn't fix the connectivity problem, it's probably the same issue as mine - some of the 40-some connector pins in the iPod's port were apparently bent and not making proper contact with the charger pins.  (Lesson learned: I'm now very careful to plug it in perfectly straight.)  Had to call in the big guns for that one: I found a parts-only, identical model iPod on eBay (ensuring from the seller that the charging port actually worked), had a geek-inclined relative swap out the non-working battery and hard drive for my own, and have had no problems since.  That method is iffy and depends on you or a friend being able to mess with it, but it's a lot cheaper than buying a new iPod.
Hope either of these tips help.

  • Ipod Classic (120Gb) charging

My Ipod Classic (120Gb) charges when I use my Retina Ipad USB charger but does not show the charging/completed symbol as it does when I charge from my PC. My Ipod Nano (2Gb) has no problem with either method. Any ideas why?

    Hi Mario,
All good information but it doesn't answer the question. The Adaptor supplied with the latest Ipad is more than adequate to supply the Classic and so I would expect the charging symbols to appear. When using the standard 5w charger the Ipod displays the charging state correctly but when using the 10w charger it gives the impression that it isn't charging even though it is. One snippet I didn't say is that the charge symbol only showed a 50% charge when in actual fact it was fully charged.
Anyway thanks for your interest if I find an answer I let the community know.

  • Can I charge my 2013 ipod classic with my original ipod classic firewire charger?

Can I charge my 2013 ipod classic with my original ipod classic firewire charger?

Nope, I'm sorry. iOS/iTunes only (you need a connection to your network, and the iPod classic doesn't have network capabilities).

  • HT1386 I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".

I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".  Could you please help?

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • Are the newer ipod classics (80GB and above) compatible with docks for the older ipod classics (20GB)?)

are the newer ipod classics (80GB and above) compatible with docks for the older ipod classics (20GB)?)

I have an iPod Touch 2 with iOS 4.2.1.  This is the highest version that works on this device.  I checked it once and it had to do with iOS 4.3 and above only supporting the higher RAM CPUs on newer devices.
Apple does make it harder than it needs to be.  There still remain a number of apps available on iTunes that will work but they are hard to find because you must manually look at each app specs to see if the app supports an iOS below 4.3
App backups are your friend since iTunes has no way to keep older version of apps.

  • TA26689 can ipod classic be charged with the iPhone's or iPad's charger?

Can iPod classic be charged with the iPhone's or iPad's charger?

There shouldn't be any issue using one of those chargers.  When I need to charge something, I just connect to any 30-pin connector/charger that's closest.

  • Using my old  ipod classic 5g charger on the new ipod touch 3g?

is it possible to use my old ipod classic 5g charger on the new ipod touch 3g? thanks

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get aCode 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Updateentries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

Does it go through properly this time?

  • My ipod classic is having problems with docking system worksok with earphones

my ipod classic seems to having problems on docking station gear4 houseparty smart dock. its playing ok but am unable to make louder and wont respond to remote . its charged to the full and my sons i phone works perfectly

Hey Silverdemon, sounds like a short, most likely in the headphones. Try a different set of headphones with this iPod or try the headphones with a different device. If the problem stops with your iPod or it moves to another device, then replace the headphones. If within 1 year of date of purchase Apple will replace the headphones for  free if problem is a defect, not abuse. If the problem continues with a different set of headphones, check the port for damage and foreign debris. If you note debris, attempt to remove it, if damage noted contact Apple and set up an appointment to have it evaluated. if nothing appears wrong, try plugging / unplugging to jack about 12 times maybe corrosion on the contacts if so that should clean it. Next thing to try reset your iPod. After that try restore from backup. Last resort, restore to new. Just make sure you make a full backup to your computer before you restore so no data is lost. If nothing works, contact Apple and set up an appointment to have your iPod evaluated. Good luck, Cheers.

  • IPod Classic not charging after sync

When I plug my iPod Classic into my computer, it syncs up normally with iTunes, and the battery icon gives a "charging" indication. But when it finishes the sync and says "OK to disconnect", the icon stops showing the charging symbol, and the iPod stops charging itself. It only shows the charging icon for the few seconds while it's actually on the "Connected to iPod" screen and syncing up. The battery is now almost dead and I am at my wits' end. It only started doing this recently, I suspect due to some update or another. Help?

I've just had the same problem and couldn't find any answers. You may have found this out by now but thankfully you can still charge the iPod at least...
Open iTunes and click on preferences (either from the small box in top left, or under edit); click on devices; make sure "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically" is ticked; Click OK.
Now when you plug in your iPod the "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" screen should remain and it should charge. Then do any syncs after it's fully charged.
