Ipod classic 5.5 gen vs 6 gen

What is the difference between the two, if comparing both models with 120 gig capacity? I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which one I should purchase

The previous Classic was available in 80 and 160 GB models in black and silver, the latest is 120Gb in Black (Charcoal) and Silver.
Software wise there doesn't appear to be any difference. THe black of the older 80 & 160 is black black, the newer one is a lighter charcoal black.
It looks unlikely Apple will go beyond the 160GB for the foreseeable future, since they have removed it from their product line up, so if you need a larger storage, as I did for my entire Apple Lossless library, grab yourself a 160 GB while there are still some out there (at reduced prices). If you don't grab a new 120 GB model

  • Cover flow on ipod classic 160gb 6th gen

I was just given an ipod classic 160gb 6th gen, it the previous owners music on it, so I hooked it up to itunes & restored it & updated it to factory settings & put my name on it. I noticed in cover flow mode, that albums are doubled, one for the entire album, then the album cover again for individual songs. when I go to album view, the albums show up ok, there are no double ups there. I also notice when I scroll down to the now playing with the split screen, it comes up blank with no cover art. I had an 80gb 5th gen ipod & everything seemed ok. I wiped it clean with a restore as well to start fresh. It took about an hour & a half to sync over my music library from my external hard drive to my new 160 gb 6th gen ipod. It seems to play ok, so far, I just got it today, & I have been playing it on & off to try it out.
I am running itunes 9.0.1.8. Also when I plug in my ipod, itunes ops up with an update message for me to update, I click ok for the update, but nothing seems to happen, so I do not know if itunes has updated or not.

Ok, should I try the trialing X, for those persistent multi covers that do not respond to adjusting the track names as first suggested? I went to your tips page & saw the graphic for that. Is it ok to just leave the Xs in or must they be removed?
iTunes tries to be "smart" and only updates the tag if it thinks you've changed something. Adding the X is a temporary measure to force iTunes to acknowlege that something has changed and thereby hopefully merge the album. Once it's done you can get rid of the unecessary trailing Xs.
I also looked at your image for handling multi discs, will this group multi discs together in cover flow?
    Yes, that's the point.
& when one is playing a multi disc set, will the ipod just go straight to the next disc (disc 2) in playback as though it were one single album?
    Yes.
or will playback stop at the last track of disc 1 & then one would have to select disc 2 to play.
    No.
Will the multi disc set still come up as 2 different discs to selct to play? I may not want to start with disc 1.
No. You can always chose which track to start playing.
One of the albums I was having trouble with multi covers was part of a 2 disc set, disc 1 was credited to the main artist, but had guest artists for 1/2 the tracks, disc 2 was by the same artist with no guest artists. I have now gotten disc 1 to show as a single cover in cover flow by checking off part of a compilation in the info panel, but it does not appear next to disc 2 in cover flow.
Again setting *Part of a compilation" is the wrong approach. Set *Part of a compilation* to No, put your guest artist info. into the track titles (or any other scheme you choose) and make sure that the Artist value is consistent for all tracks.
on an off note, I notice when I press my ipod button or navigate any of its features, there is a slight grinding noise, I can hear the hard drive, when I bring it close to my ear, it sounds like a chewing mouse is this ok/normal to hear slight noises? it seems to be functioning alright. It is pretty responsive.
Yes, the noise from disc activity is normal. My iPod lives in a silcone sleeve which probably muffles it a bit and most of the time I'll have already have music playing so I'm rarely conscious of the noise of hard drive activity but it is there.

  • I can't open albums recently synced to my iPod Classic 160GB 5th Gen.

My approximately 2.5 year old ipod Classic Gen. 5  recently developed a problem consisting of the inability to open and play recent albums that had been importged into iTunes and then synced to the iPod. The software version on my iPod is 2.0.4 and it had been updated to this level after I activated the iPod shortly after purchasing it in 2010.  The version of iTunes on my computer is Version 10.5.3.3 which I installed on  01-25-2012. My Dell Computer XPS Gen 5 has Windows XP SP 3 installed on it as of 05-2009.
The "opening albums" problem has developed since the latest version of iTunes , 10.5.3.3 was installed. My iPod is about 75% full of it's stated capacity of 40, 000 tracks.I have nothing but music on my iPod.
All of my music iwithin iTunes is fully populated with the respective meta data including appropriate album art.
I have attempted several workarounds for this problem, including using the iPod reset routine (moving the HOLD button to the lock position for about 5-10 seconds, moving the Hold button back to the open position, then simultaneously holding the Menu and the Select buttons down until the Apple lkogo appears on the LED). The iPod eventually resumes normal mode and comes back to the Main Menu. This does not solve the problem of specific tracks within an album or playlist not playing.
The second workaround was having the iPod docked rto my computer and to right click the iPod graphc within iTunes which displays the panel which provides iPod identification and capacity statistics, etc. By clicking on the Restore button on this panel a procedure is launched to clear out the existing firmware on the iPod and reset it to that level on the iPod when it came from the factory; my iPod was reset to version.2.0.4. There is eventually a choice to make as to clearing off the existing music and I chose to do so.
One thing I do notice about the tracks that will not play is that they invariably show in the Get Info Summary tab as ID3tag  v2.4 and Encoded by LAME3.98.
The bulk of my music reflects ID3Tag v2.3. I read somewhere that ID3Tag type v2.4 has some negative impact on iTunes and subsequently the iPod.. The ID3tag v2.4 offers the opportunity to preload album art within the ID3 tag at a prescribed area of the ID3 tag prior to importing the music tracks into iTunes.
I also read at one of the User Commumnity sites that iTunes began the iCloud concept in the latest version or versions in January 2012. Within the Menu bar at the top of the screen you can left click on the VIEW item and get a drop down list of options. If you left click on the VIEW OPTIONS you will get a panel which provides you a selection of fields to be displayed on your listing.among them being iCLOUD DOWNLOAD and iCLOUD STATUS. I have not subscribed
to the new iCloud service so all my tracks show as WAITING with a clear cloud graphic. Aparently these iCLOUD status indicators must be stored somewhere on the ID3 tag. I hope that the music that I have been impoting to iTunes is not being corrupted by the utilization of the same area for 2 different purpsoses.

Hey you dont need our help, you can help most of us here.
But can you clarify that the problematic Albums does play in iTunes and not in iPod?
I agree with you, it is most likely the ID3Tag v2.4, which may not be implemented correctly, missing  iPod software codec,  especially the album art tag.
I can only suggest, deleting the Album Art for the album and see if it works.
    Have a nice day!

  • IPod Classic case - 7th Gen

I can't find anything!  It seems manufacturers stopped making cases with Gen 6.  I'm looking for something acrylic or that provides good protection.  I'm using the same case from my 160gb classic gen 6, a Power Support Crystal jacket - http://www.powersupportusa.com/accessories/ipod-classic.html.  I love the case but the new iPod is loose in the case and they didn't come out with a new one.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

I bought this hard case for my iPod. I like it but you are right, there isn't a lot of choice out there!

  • IPod Classic 160gb (7th Gen) making odd noises through internal speaker

I bought an iPod Classic off a friend, and within a day or so of syncing it to my iTunes it started to make this strange "chirp" noise through the internal speaker. It is the same noise the iPod makes if you boot into Diagnostic Mode. It was making this noise randomly when browsing songs or scrolling through the main menu.
I had a warranty through the store it was purchased at so I exchanged it for a new one. After syncing it with iTunes again it made the same noise through the internal speaker. I turned the "Clicker" sound off in settings to see if that would eliminate the noise, and it did, until I synced the iPod a few minutes later and it made the noise once, again.
I've seen other posts on the web with people having this issue, but no solutions. Anybody have any ideas? Or is it just something I have to live with, or keep exchaging iPods?

It seems to be making this noise whenever it has to load information. If I scroll through the cover flow really quickly and get to a section of albums that haven't had their art loaded, it makes the noises as it loads the art.
Seems like any time the iPod has to find and display information from the hard drive that it doesn't have cached it makes the noise. Is this normal or should I be seeking another replacement? I don't want a bad hard drive on my hands.

  • IPod classic 80GByte (latest gen.): strange cover flow & invisible artists

    Hello.
I recognized strange behaviuor on my iPod classic:
    1. cover flow: Behind an album named the greatest hits (the correct cover is shown) I can find titles from various artists from their greatest hits album. But when I look up the special album I see only the correct artist.
    2. List of artist/search for artists: SOme (at least one) artists seem to be hidden, i.e. I cannot find them in the artists' list or search for them.
On my Mac in iTunes everything works fine - so this does not seem to be the reason.
I already tried a reset with no effect.
    What can I do?
    regards
    bruegge

The Greatest Hits behaviour is a bug/feature of current firmware. All tracks with the same album title are treated as one album. Workaround is to rename to give each album a unique name, e.g. *Greatest Hits, Artist 1*.
Most likely explanation for missing artist is that the tracks of the album are marked as Compilation. The *Sort Artist* value might also have an impact on whether the artist appears where you expect it to.

  • IPod classic 160GB 6th gen not sync after HDD & ribbon cable replacement

I recently replaced my iPod 6th gen HDD and ribbon cable, but when I connect it to my PC and iTunes recognizes it, I can't sync or load music to it 'cause it displays an 1439 error, What can I do?

I assume you have tried everything in this article? And I do mean everything.
    iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
Have you tried restoring it another available Mac or PC to see if the problem persists there?

  • Ipod classic 80GB 6th Gen Alarm not playing a Playlist

Is this a software bug? my old iPod Video (5th Gen 30GB, software version 1.3) alarm plays a playlist with no problems.

So what seems to be the problem then?  Does iTunes still see the device?  If so, just go ahead and sync it as you normally would.

  • Need software/firmware 1.0.0 to Ipod Classic 80Gb 5-gen

I need the old firmware, the new ones wont work with my dock. Anybody who knows where I can find it?

I agree with Jeff's comment about Pioneer - if they state that the iPod is compatible with their head unit, then they (Pioneer) should support it and not Apple. Again, as Jeff says, how can Apple support every 3rd party product that is produced?
I've just checked the Pioneer web site and although I did not find the AVIC X3-BT that you mentioned, I did find the AVIC-X3 (http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/archive/AVIC-X3/index.html) and I see that it is only compatible with iPods up to August 2007. It is not listed on the Pioneer.no site, so perhaps it was never available there.
The AVIC-X3-II which *is shown on the Norwegian site* (http://www.pioneer.no/no/products/25/111/241/AVIC-X3-II/specs.html) states that it is compatible with iPods up to September 2007, but specifically excludes the iPod Touch (introduced that month). This is the same month that the original Classic was introduced. So - first thing - work out exactly which model of iPod you have (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353). If yours is a Classic, introduced in September 2007, then there may be an issue, but that is up to Pioneer to sort out, perhaps with an update to their product.
I did look for the AVIC-X3-BT on both web sites, but as far as I can tell (with my Norwegian!) it is not there.
I also found a forum specifically about the AVIC X3, at http://www.avicx1forums.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6 and this post (http://www.avicx1forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1617) in particular about the Classic not working with the AVIC X3. In his reply, Oliver says that there is a problem with the Classic (at the Pioneer end) and he advises the original poster to contact Pioneer Customer Services by phone.
By the way, your English is better than my Norwegian, I guarantee it!
    Med vennlig hilsen,
    Phil

  • IPod Classic 80GB 6th Gen help

I put my ipod on the usb cord. Windows gives me a scan and fix (recommended) window. I click scan and fix. Then it gives me a window that says check and fix problems. So I click check on Automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. I click start.
"Some problems were found and fixed. any files that were affected by these problems were moved to a folder named 'found' on the device or disk. Your device or disk is now ready to use.
If you removed the device or disk before all files were fully written to it, parts of some files may still be missing. If so,go back to the source and recopy those files to your device or disk."

  • IPod Classic 80GB 6th Gen,Restoring Problems

hi i really need help! :/
my iPod has frozen, I've been using it as removable disc to transfer some files, but while i was transferring the last file,i need to disconnect it from my computer and i did that without pressing "safely remove device from computer" and that's when the frizzing happened then I've reset it manually as usual and then for the first time it shown "use iTunes to restore". I've tried every technique for restoring it but nothing works, when i use iTunes to restore,it does the whole "restoring" thing but when it finally finishes it says do the same procedure again (this was with version 7.6 of iTunes) because with the 10th version just starts restoring it and it stops just a few seconds after ( The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439) ). I've tried changing the usb port, updating the drivers, reconnecting the iPod several time, restoring it in disk mode, trying different versions of iTunes, using different computers, different cables, but nothing works. I've even tried to restore it using mac laptop with fire-wire (but when using the fire-wire didn't even recognized the iPod as a device) so I've tried with usb port on the mac laptop but even that didn't work (only the error was different error 1430 ). only LINUX is able to format it but thats about it! then I've tried the diagnostic mode and nothing, everything seems to be fine, but it still doesn't restores!
    Could somebody PLEASE help!!!!!
    Thanks

  • Bose Sounddock remote doesn't work with 6th Gen 160GB iPod Classic

I have recently purchased a Bose Portable Sounddock and whilst my iPod Classic (160GB 6th Gen) will work in the docking station, the only buttons on the remote that work are the volume buttons - everything else has to be done on the device.  It does charge when in the docking station as well.  I have an iPhone 4 that works perfectly a Nano that works perfectly but the Classic won't.  I have spoken to Bose who tell me that there should be no issues with my Classic.  I have reset it to factory settings and it hasn't helped.  I have tried another Sounddock in a local shop and it has the same issues.
Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?  Any help appreciated.

Assuming that the Bose Soundock, is brand new and not refurbished or pre-owned
    My Suggestions
Check that the remote batteries are good.
Hard Reset the iPod, (press menu and select buton for about 10 secs or till the Apple logo comes ON)
Restore the iPod (this is to fix any corrupted firmware)
If the above doesn't work, bring the iPod to the Bose store and try it on their Soundock (bring your remote and test)

  • IPod classic 5th gen; charges half way but now it won't charge at all

I suppose my first mistake was buying a used iPod, oh well. If worked fine when I got it but had a weak batery which I replaced. It worked perfectly. A few weeks later the right channel went on the fritz; had to jiggle to make it work. However when I replaced the the jack (fyi, the jack and hold button are on one ribbon cable) it stopped charging to 100%. Now it's been two days and my iPod hasn't charged. Whether I plug it into my PC or a wall outlet, the screen while continuously read "very low battery please wait". Any theories? They'd be much appreciated.
iPod Classic Video 5th Gen, 30Gb

Just to cover all ground here, you have tried using another USB sync cable to see if that makes a difference? Have you double checked the battery's connection to the logic board?

  • Ipod Classic 160 6th g. doesn't sync w/Imac g5 non intel OS 10.4.11. This is a replacement for same ipod which was stolen recently. That pod worked fine with Itunes 9! Now this pod says it only works with Itunes 10.7. ***!!!! Why has Apple screwed up?

My ipod classic 160 6th gen. was recently stolen. It had 3000 tunes on it and it synced perfectly with Itunes 9 on my Imac G5 non intel OS 10.4.11. So I recently bought same model and guess what, it doesn't sync at all. Now message says it only works with Itunes 10.7 and up. I certainly cant afford to buy a new intel based Mac and I really dont need a new pc. It feels like Apple has dropped the ball on its long time users and tough luck to you and all the $$$$$$$ spent on downloading songs and buying ipods over the years! I AM SO ANGRY THAT I CANNOT BRING MY MUSIC WITH ME ANYMORE. I dont know if there is any solution to this except being extorted to upgrade to new tech! I have been trying to get answers to this issue but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a tech genius so extremely techy solutions will be in vane.

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?
