IPod Classic and alarm settings & other ramblings

Hi,
Question: Did anybody notice that when setting an alarm, there is no more "Bell" icon showing up on the iPod, next to the alarm to show that it is active?
I really start wondering about all those little pesky glitches/bugs/whatever which start troubleing me
that I purchased an iPod Classic right away.
Hope those things will be fixed soon:
-Correct synching (even after playing a game on the iPod)
-Correct address book label synching (private/work labels correctly set on iPod, like in address book)
-purchased games correctly displayed (preview image in games list missing)
-CoverFlow sortable by "Album Artist", like on iTunes (so it might get usefull to have this option...)
-Apple Hi-Fi additional options (like the 5th Gen iPod - it's a shame that a 400€ Box isn't supported anymore after 1 year of praise...)
-If Apple is playing out nice, bring back the Video Out for all those people having accessories now useless...
Anyway, hope there will be an FW update soon (waiting now since 2 weeks...) which addresses all those small things, to make using the iPod Classic again a good User Experience.
(Send already 2 weeks ago Feedback to Apple over all this points - No answer yet).
Cheers,
S.,

iPod 3rd Gen, iPod 4th Gen, iPod 5th Gen, iPod Classic, 2 iPod Nano's 1st Gen, PowerBook G4, MacPro Quad, 2 30" Cinema Displays and a bunch of Video Cables not working anymore with my iPod Classic....

I think many people have the same problem, looking at all those forum entries.

  • Data on ipod classic shows up as "other".  I REFUSE to restore it cuz the music is not backed up cuz my macbook had to be restored and that wiped my itunes.  I don't have the cds anymore. How do i get my music back??

So my old ipod broke two years ago.  I got an ipod classic and synched it to my itunes library on my macbook.  Then I had problems with my macbook and had to restore it to factory settings.  I have kept my eyes open for a way to get my music backed up in my itunes again cuz I figured this ipod would probably break someday too.  Anyway now when I look at my 160g ipod classic, it says I have 0 songs, and 0 videos but 27.3g of "other".  I looked around for a solution and I tried updating my itunes and then I plugged my ipod in and it said I needed to restore it to factory settings using itunes.  I'm not gonna do that.  For the most part I have come across this problem with solutions for pc users and I have a MACBOOK.  Anyway I haven't even had my ipod hooked up to my computer for a while because I haven't added any new music and when I charge it, I just hook it up to my iphone charger.  This literally happened overnight.  I mean there is some stuff on there that is irreplaceable.  PLEASE HELP!
p.s. Dumb it down a bit for me.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • IPod Classic and the new software upgrade

I've had my 80GB iPod Classic since December. I loaded it up with all my music and hadn't plugged it back into my computer until a couple days ago. I got a notice to update my iPod software so I did and it came back that it couldn't because there was an unknown error. Not only that but after I ejected it from there I wasn't able to restore it automatically) all my music was gone. A couple days have past since then and I've not gotten around to restoring it, which it suggested. It told me it would be reappear in the iTunes window when it was done. Since then it hasn't shown up and I've been prompted twice to restore. Has anyone else had this problem?? Can someone help me out?? It's now nothing but a blackish-grey screen with the apple icon. It's not even registering on my computer......

I've tried all afternoon to get it fixed and I think I finally found the answer. To all of those 80GB iPod owners having problems with the reset please try this, it worked for me!
iPod Classic keeps Continuously resetting at Apple Logo

Okay, I have sent in my iPod Classic, and let me just say its AWESOME! Okay first I found that other people were having a problem with the NEWEST iPod Continuously resetting at Apple Logo. There is a 10 step process in getting the help you need, follow these instructions:
*I got these from Jimmy_Dean, thanks bud...*
10 Simple Steps To Fix Your iPod That Is Stuck In A Continuous Reset Loop:
    1) While the iPod was resetting itself over and over (continuously resetting itself), press the Play/Pause button and the center select button simultaneously, for about 5 seconds, and it will display that it is now in disk mode.
    2) Start up iTunes on your computer and then connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable.
    3) Click on the iPod in the left pane, select "Restore" to restore it to its original blank state. Follow the prompts to continue.
    4) When the computer completes the Restore update, and it displays a message saying that the iPod will disappear and reappear in iTunes in a minute, immediately disconnect the iPod (unplug it from your USB cable).
    5) On the iPod, you should see the main menu, in a few seconds. Pick a couple of settings to update for example the English language, and Eastern Time Zone (New York or Washington, DC), etc.
    6) Press and hold the Play/Pause button to power the iPod off.
    7) Re-connect the iPod to your comptuer with the USB cable.
    8) Start syncing using iTunes, as normal.
    9) All should be well.
    10) Remember to always click on Eject in iTunes, and waiting for visual confirmation, before disconnecting the iPod.

This site brings you to a step by step process in getting your iPod fixed. Its very hands on, and the day I requested a repair or a replacement, they sent me a box. I got it in less that 1 day! Mind you that was the 4th of March when I requested the box. I got it the 5th of March, and I sent it in that same day with NO CHARGE! Apple pays for it if you have the warranty, if your iPod is in the first 180 days of purchase (they can tell), everything is free unless its obvious that you dropped it or something like that. Anyways, I got an email toay (March 6th), that says that they have recieved the product and are diagnosing it. Thats really fast, mind you! Well, I am now waiting for that, and then they will let me know if they can fix it or have to replace it. In that case, I will NOT BE CHARGE A PENNY for the services, they told me the process is really fast and I will get my iPod back in a few weeks at most.
So a total of 2 weeks for everything at most FOR FREE, thats a deal!
I live in a city that DOESNT have an Apple store in it (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and I am on tour ALL the time with bands, and I am just lucky everything is coming together fast and smooth!
If your city has an Apple store, you can check here:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/
You can bring it to them and they will tell you if they have to replace it or fix it, if you can get a NEW iPod for free TAKE IT there and then. You will save time and effort!
Let me know how this helped on this blog!!!
    Thanks everyone,

  • Possible iPod Classic and Oracle Netbeans/Java Issue

I recently lost all the music from my iPod Classic and was unable to restore from iTunes or reset to factory defaults. The iPod showed a large amount of disk usage but no music, video, photos, etc. and it took forever to connect to my Windows USB port. After battling this and trying tons of ideas on the net, the Apple Store had to reformat the device from a Mac and reset the drive. Today I just had the same issue and I think the issue was caused by Oracle Netbeans and/or Java being loaded to my desktop. Both times I had this issue was after downloading Oracle NetBeans for a development tool. Has anyone else seen this issue?

    1. How likely is it that Apple will fix this issue with future firmware releases?
No-one here could even hazard a guess. We're just users like yourself. Do Philips claim this DVD player is compatible? Isn't it the responsibility of the makers of the DVD player to ensure it works with the Classic?
    2. Are other 3rd party devices (i.e. Docks, Automobiles, etc.) affected by this firmware release?
Yes. Almost all older 3rd party accessories don't work with the Classic. There have been many posts about such issues both here and other iPod forums.
    3. Is there any way to go back to firmware release 1.0.2? I know backing off firmware releases is possible with the iPhone.
This may be of help but you have to have the previous version still on your computer.
Remove the latest update from the iTunes/iPod updates folder.
In Windows XP but I think it's found in "Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates."
Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically), then click restore. Or simply disconnect your modem from the computer.
    Then restore the iPod.
You should then be asked if you want to use the previous version of the iPod software.

  • I purchased a used iPod Classic and can't get it to sync

I purchased a used iPod Classic and can't get it to sync to iTunes.  If I click on Devices it asks if I want to transfer Purchases which I select Cancel - the SYNC option is grayed out.
    Please suggest fixes.

    Hello mkplumlee,
I would recommend restoring the iPod to factory settings.

I recently connected my new ipad to my itunes, but now itunes will not recognise my ipod classic, and 50gig of music has gone. ipad connects ok but no longer ipod which has been there for two years! help!!!

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.

  • HT1657 I rented a movie to add onto my ipod classic and when I moved it to my ipod it is no longer there and it is no longer in my purchased section on my itunes.

I recently rented a movie to add on my ipod classic and it wasn't transferring when I would sync so I manually move it to my ipod but when I go on my ipod it is not there and it is no longer in my purchases on itunes.  help!

Is this on your computer or on iPad/iPhone ? If you are on an iPad or iPhone then it should have downloaded into the Videos app - iTunes on those devices is just the iTunes store, and if you just see the Ts & Cs link on the Downloads tab then that means that there are no outstanding downloads waiting.

  • I have an ipod classic and just had to replace my old laptop.  When purchasing tunes, while they show up on my laptop they no longer sync to my ipod.  can anyone help?

I have an ipod classic and just had to replace my laptop.  When I purchase music, while it downloads to my laptop, it no longer syncs to my ipod.  Any ideas?

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?

I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?

    Yes, you can!(:
    STEP 1: Open iTunes
STEP 2: Navigate to the "iTunes Store". It can be found under the "STORE" tab.
STEP 3: On the right side of the store there should be a "Quick Links" Section. Click on the "Purchased" link.
STEP 4: Navigate to the "Music" tab and click on "All Songs". Then at the bottom of the screen there will be a button that says "Download All". Click the button and your songs will be begin downloading!
NOTE: This will only work with songs that you bought from the iTunes store, if you imported them from a CD, you will have to do it again.
NOTE: You can also do this with Apps, Movies, TV Shows, and Books.
NOTE: You may have to sign in with your Apple ID to verify the download.
Hope this helped! Enjoy your music!(:

  • IPod Classic and iTunes 10.5.x

I've been monitoring the iPod Classic forums for over a month now, trying to get a feeling of whether to upgrade my Windows 7 system to the latest iTunes (10.5.x). I'm interested in the update for the security fixes, but have been wary ever since iTunes 9.
I'm impressed with the folks that answer here, and have attempted to summarize my observations regarding the common questions in this post in my journal. The impression I'm getting, at least from the support questions and answers, is that iTunes 10.5 is iffy. I'm seeing lots of questions where iTunes (apparently 10.5) seemingly hangs in the middle of a large transfer (usually due to an interaction with the anti-virus software), and ends up corrupting the filesystem on the iPod Classic, requiring a restore and a retransfer of all files. Further (especially a concern for folks like me with over 26,000 songs), that transfer needs to be done in small chunks.
So, my question to the experts on this forum (turingtest, planb77, bilbo_cheshire, and all the other good folks here) is: Is my impression correct? If I have no need to use the cloud (which doesn't work with the iPod Classic) and if iTunes 10.4 is working fine, don't f---  with it.
Secondly, does anyone know if Apple is aware of these interactions, and is it likely to be fixed in a future version. My fear, of course, is that the iPod Classic is a dead iPod classic playing, and there won't be Apple support for a device with the large storage capacities.
