Ipod classic, and its click wheel

well, i used to have a 30gb video and the click wheel scrolled easily and didnt pause, now i have a 80gb classic, and when i go to scroll straight away it doesnt start to scroll, until about a second later. Is this common, or do i need to exchange and replace it because it is faulty?
thanks

Indeed that works, but it also allows for the iPod to catch up so compensates for the menu read that it seems to be doing. Not ideal, but alas it works.
For general responsiveness I've found that pressing ever so slightly instead of moving your thumb works well. So, you're not pushing hard enough to click the wheel but you are applying pressure.
I've just compared to a friend's previous generation iPod and there is definitely a loss in sensitivity.

  • I have a third-generation iPod nano, and the click wheel died today. Is it possible to replace myself?

There's been a delay or lack of response for a while now, but the ribbon connecting it to the logic board is fully into the clip, and there's no clicking noise when I try to scroll or press any of the buttons. I've replaced the screen before, so I was wondering whether I could replace the click wheel, and how - there's a lot less on the internet about how to do that. I'm really trying not to let my iPod die of old age, so any help would be great.

You will have to replace the front panel and rear panel.

  • IPod Classic Gen 3 Click Wheel 20-GB accidental disk format

I believe I accidentally formatted the disk on my iPod while attempting to format another drive connected to the computer (Win 7). Now I only get the Apple logo and nothing happens when I try and do a reset (menu/select). When I press the menu/play buttons, the display will cycle on and off after about 6 seconds. Any idea how I can recover this iPod or should I consider it a paper weight? Thank you very much!

The first thing I would attempt is to restore the iPod firmware through iTunes
(Summary Tab - Version Section - Restore). Both Mac and Windows versions can do it for you. But all your iPod contents will be lost (if you've formatted the iPod they're gone anyway).
And attention, choose the right format during restore, Mac format (HFS+ filesystem) is usable only on Mac Os, Windows format (FAT32 filesystem) is universal.
Once the firmware is restored, the iPod should behave as usual.
    Good luck.

  • IPod Classic and the new software upgrade

I've had my 80GB iPod Classic since December. I loaded it up with all my music and hadn't plugged it back into my computer until a couple days ago. I got a notice to update my iPod software so I did and it came back that it couldn't because there was an unknown error. Not only that but after I ejected it from there I wasn't able to restore it automatically) all my music was gone. A couple days have past since then and I've not gotten around to restoring it, which it suggested. It told me it would be reappear in the iTunes window when it was done. Since then it hasn't shown up and I've been prompted twice to restore. Has anyone else had this problem?? Can someone help me out?? It's now nothing but a blackish-grey screen with the apple icon. It's not even registering on my computer......

I've tried all afternoon to get it fixed and I think I finally found the answer. To all of those 80GB iPod owners having problems with the reset please try this, it worked for me!
iPod Classic keeps Continuously resetting at Apple Logo
Posted: Mar 6, 2008 1:45 PM Reply Email
Okay, I have sent in my iPod Classic, and let me just say its AWESOME! Okay first I found that other people were having a problem with the NEWEST iPod Continuously resetting at Apple Logo. There is a 10 step process in getting the help you need, follow these instructions:
*I got these from Jimmy_Dean, thanks bud...*
10 Simple Steps To Fix Your iPod That Is Stuck In A Continuous Reset Loop:
    1) While the iPod was resetting itself over and over (continuously resetting itself), press the Play/Pause button and the center select button simultaneously, for about 5 seconds, and it will display that it is now in disk mode.
    2) Start up iTunes on your computer and then connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable.
    3) Click on the iPod in the left pane, select "Restore" to restore it to its original blank state. Follow the prompts to continue.
    4) When the computer completes the Restore update, and it displays a message saying that the iPod will disappear and reappear in iTunes in a minute, immediately disconnect the iPod (unplug it from your USB cable).
    5) On the iPod, you should see the main menu, in a few seconds. Pick a couple of settings to update for example the English language, and Eastern Time Zone (New York or Washington, DC), etc.
    6) Press and hold the Play/Pause button to power the iPod off.
    7) Re-connect the iPod to your comptuer with the USB cable.
    8) Start syncing using iTunes, as normal.
    9) All should be well.
    10) Remember to always click on Eject in iTunes, and waiting for visual confirmation, before disconnecting the iPod.
If these do not work, please go to:

This site brings you to a step by step process in getting your iPod fixed. Its very hands on, and the day I requested a repair or a replacement, they sent me a box. I got it in less that 1 day! Mind you that was the 4th of March when I requested the box. I got it the 5th of March, and I sent it in that same day with NO CHARGE! Apple pays for it if you have the warranty, if your iPod is in the first 180 days of purchase (they can tell), everything is free unless its obvious that you dropped it or something like that. Anyways, I got an email toay (March 6th), that says that they have recieved the product and are diagnosing it. Thats really fast, mind you! Well, I am now waiting for that, and then they will let me know if they can fix it or have to replace it. In that case, I will NOT BE CHARGE A PENNY for the services, they told me the process is really fast and I will get my iPod back in a few weeks at most.
So a total of 2 weeks for everything at most FOR FREE, thats a deal!
I live in a city that DOESNT have an Apple store in it (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and I am on tour ALL the time with bands, and I am just lucky everything is coming together fast and smooth!
If your city has an Apple store, you can check here:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/
You can bring it to them and they will tell you if they have to replace it or fix it, if you can get a NEW iPod for free TAKE IT there and then. You will save time and effort!
Let me know how this helped on this blog!!!

  • Ipod Video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio

My ipod video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio.  I can hear the clicking of the wheel and selections made through the headphones, but I cannot get music, video, etc. to play audio.  I did the 5 R's and installed a new headphone jack prior to posting here.  I am all out of ideas and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you connect it to an iPod Dock Stereo to check if there is music, coming out, if not the Hard Reset would solve your problem or else the Audio chip has called it a day.
I know you mentioned doing the 5Rs, but did you see the Apple Logo and the language prompt? Sorry, most of the users here, doesn't do the Hard Reset correctly.
Try the iPod Hard Reset -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then release the button
    Select your preferred language.
This wont delete or erase any song/data on your iPod Classic.
See this Apple Support Article on 5Rs

    Good Luck!

I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?

    Yes, you can!(:
    STEP 1: Open iTunes
STEP 2: Navigate to the "iTunes Store". It can be found under the "STORE" tab.
STEP 3: On the right side of the store there should be a "Quick Links" Section. Click on the "Purchased" link.
STEP 4: Navigate to the "Music" tab and click on "All Songs". Then at the bottom of the screen there will be a button that says "Download All". Click the button and your songs will be begin downloading!
NOTE: This will only work with songs that you bought from the iTunes store, if you imported them from a CD, you will have to do it again.
NOTE: You can also do this with Apps, Movies, TV Shows, and Books.
NOTE: You may have to sign in with your Apple ID to verify the download.
Hope this helped! Enjoy your music!(:

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Possible iPod Classic and Oracle Netbeans/Java Issue

I recently lost all the music from my iPod Classic and was unable to restore from iTunes or reset to factory defaults. The iPod showed a large amount of disk usage but no music, video, photos, etc. and it took forever to connect to my Windows USB port. After battling this and trying tons of ideas on the net, the Apple Store had to reformat the device from a Mac and reset the drive. Today I just had the same issue and I think the issue was caused by Oracle Netbeans and/or Java being loaded to my desktop. Both times I had this issue was after downloading Oracle NetBeans for a development tool. Has anyone else seen this issue?

    1. How likely is it that Apple will fix this issue with future firmware releases?
No-one here could even hazard a guess. We're just users like yourself. Do Philips claim this DVD player is compatible? Isn't it the responsibility of the makers of the DVD player to ensure it works with the Classic?
    2. Are other 3rd party devices (i.e. Docks, Automobiles, etc.) affected by this firmware release?
Yes. Almost all older 3rd party accessories don't work with the Classic. There have been many posts about such issues both here and other iPod forums.
    3. Is there any way to go back to firmware release 1.0.2? I know backing off firmware releases is possible with the iPhone.
This may be of help but you have to have the previous version still on your computer.
Remove the latest update from the iTunes/iPod updates folder.
In Windows XP but I think it's found in "Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates."
Then prevent iTunes from checking the internet for a new update (preferences/general and remove the check mark from "check for updates automatically), then click restore. Or simply disconnect your modem from the computer.
    Then restore the iPod.
You should then be asked if you want to use the previous version of the iPod software.

So I downloaded I tunes off the net. was told the driver for ipod was included in Itunes? I'm computer illeterate, I appologize for this. I'm completely at a loss here, and really don't know what to do.
The serialnumber on my ipod is 2CD44617K8 which I got off the back of the ipod.
I also typed this number in the apple web site and it doesn't recognize the number either.
I have contacted the ebayer this was bought from and he hasn't returned any emails and doesn't act like he wants to help in any kind of way. I'd like to make sure it's opperator error and not something wrong with the ipod.
    thanks in advance

This is the wrong forum for your question, this area is for people with the latest iPod nano.
You need to post in the correct forum and you will probably get more help.
Are you sure you have bought a 'real' iPod, could it be a fake?
Does the eBay seller have good positive feedback, it could be that the iPod is actually broken. Does the iPod turn on, can you use the menus, etc. You should be able to operate the iPod without any music.
