IPod classic as Backup

i would like to use my iPod Classic as an external hard drive to back up my camera SD card.  I have an Apple SD to 30 pin adaptor used to transfer photos to my iPad, but  the iPod won't accept the photo files from theSD.  Is there a way to make it work?

No.  There is no functionality in the iPod's software that will allow it to read an SD card.

  • ?? re using IPOD Classic as backup for photos while away on vacation

I bought an 80GB IPOD Classic primarily as a backup storage device for photos while away for 3 months. I have copied about 4 g of songs onto it (using my main computer and ITUNES) and now plan to use it to back up photos using my Laptop (which doesn't have ITUNES on it).
I realize that I don't want to use the ITUNES Photo Sync as I will be using it on two computers and it will erase and sync the new photo files so I plan to copy and paste the files in using Windows Explorer. I've done a couple of tests and all seems fine - using Explorer I copy Pictures Folders into the IPOD and I can see the files, open them, delete them, etc - and they're the correct size.
My question is this - I can't seem to "see" the photo files on the IPOD itself - when used as a storage device can you not see the photos? Is there another menu I can't find?
Also - I checked off the "Enable Disk Use" and "Full Resolution" in ITUNES - maybe that's not necessary as I'm not using ITUNES for the photos?
    Thanks for any help

*I can't seem to "see" the photo files on the IPOD itself - when used as a storage device can you not see the photos? Is there another menu I can't find?*
You can't "view" anything on your screen that is added to the iPod when using it as a storage device, in the same way that you can't play songs added in that mode either. You can only access those files through Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac), you can only view or play anything added through iTunes.

  • Can't access iPod Classic 160GB. NEED a backup.

Hi, I've got a 6th gen. 160GB iPod Classic and I need a backup of the songs I've got in it.
Basically what is happening is the same thing that happened when I installed Mavericks and tried to use my WD hard disk: I wasn't able to mount it nor repair it so, Disk Utility, told me to back up everything, erase and then restore the whole thing. (in this process I lost part of my music library, that's why I'm here)
The problem lies in the fact that once, with my WD hard disk, I just clicked "ok" on the message that told me to follow those steps and the hard disk appeared on the desktop, thus allowing me to back up almost all I needed to but not with the iPod. I click ok and nothing happens.
I tried rebooting it, I tried to put it in Disk Mode and I tried to connect it to other computers; always the same outcome.
I am not searching for a permanent solution since in a week or less I'll have a new one (this one's headphone jack is ****** up and Apple will replace the whole device); all I want is to be able to access it as an external disk and recover what I have inside.
    Thanks a lot.
P.S. I was using DeTune and everything was working fine, I disconnected the iPod to use it while running, got back, connected it again and now it doesn't work.

Everything that was on your classic should also have been in your library, and that backed up to another drive. If you manually managed the device, and it was the only location holding your media, and it has become corrupted, there really isn't much hope. See Corrupt iPod classic. There may be a slim chance to recover media stored on it via disc mode if is isn't stored elsewhere, but if it won't mount, or has been reformatted, then the moment has probably passed.

  • Can I do a duplicate search to delete on my ipod classic 120gb only?  There are no duplicates on my itunes... I think these duplicates arose when I did a restore, and had to reload from the cloud, and my computer backup.... please help...

I have an ipod classic 120gb...
Somehow I have managed to get mutiple duplicates.....
I had a computer crash... and I restore several songs from the cloud, and from my computer backup from an external drive...
and also, from past purchases on itunes...... some songs I had loaded from my own cd collection....and songs had overlapped......
I knew I had duplicates before the crash and never took care of it.... but now of course there are more...
I have taken care of the duplicates in itunes, by deleting them one by one..... I made the mistake of checking boxes then highlighting and doing a mass delete... thinking it would only delete my check boxes.... and loss a lot of music... so had to restore backups again....
    so.......
Ipod......... how do I delete duplicates from the ipod, without loosing music from my ipod... I have lost music that is still there I believe on the Ipod that is not on my itunes... but I am not sure...and I can not find a search duplicates in itunes for Ipod....  can anyone help me on this... is there a way to do it, without going through 8 days of music line by line??
    Thank you

Restore the iPod and reload it from the library... Ah, but there might be media on the device that isn't in the library yes?
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device and a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates from iTunes if you end up needing to do a blanket recovery from the iPod. See this  thread for background on DeDuper.

  • Error code 80070022 and 80070057 when trying to backup music from iPod Classic

Hello. I'm attempting to backup all of the music from my 80GB iPod Classic to my Windows Vista computer. My old computer (the one originally with the backed up music) died on me, so iTunes wont backup music from my iPod to the computer. So I am forced to either use a 3rd party transfer software or transfer the music from the iPod's file system. Attempting a backup either of these ways results in errors that prevent the computer from transfering 95% of the music. The 3rd party software offers no information about the error, but copy/pasting from the iPod file system to the PC returns the following errors:
error code 0x80070022 (first error message)
error code 0x80070057 (subsequent error messages for 95% of music files attempting to be copied)
If I try transferring through the iPod's file system on my Macbook Pro, I get error code -36.
I've tried restarting both the PC and iPod, and I've also tried the transfer in safe mode. Both attempts have not solved this problem. Most of the  12,000 songs on the iPod were ripped long ago from CDs I own. I've also painstakingly rated every one of these songs. I'm very worried that one day my iPod will crap out on me and the ratings will be gone forever and I'll have to spend tons of time reripping those CDs again. I've also googled this problem  and have found little help.
Other details - this iPod was originlly set up on a WinXP PC. Addionally, I should note that I have no problems connecting to itunes or playing any of the music files. These errors are only preventing me from copying music files to my PC or Mac.
    Thank you in advance!

  • IPod Classic, have music backup, how to synch to new computer?

My PC hard disk crashed, I have a backup of all music which I've copied to a new PC. To synch my Ipod to the new PC  (it doesn't recognize the IPod right now) can I just restore the IPod to the factory default settings and then synch it as if it were new? If not, can someone direct me to where this particular problem is addressed? I've spent an hour looking at almost relevant solutions, but none that match this particular configuration.
    Thanks.

    Howdy LondonBruce,
It sounds like you got all your music into iTunes on your new computer and want to get that music syncing to the iPod classic. If you use the following article to restore the iPod Classic, you will be able to sync your content to the iPod as though it were the first time syncing.
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
Since your iPod is not recognized in iTunes at the moment you can use the following article to troubleshoot that:

  • How do I install backup into a new ipod classic

I lost an ipod classic and just bought a new one to replace it.
How do I setup the new one using the backup of the old one?
    Thanks for the help

    Hello fguzman07,
Simply connect the new iPod to the same iTunes library, set it up how you like to, and sync away.  I'm not sure how you would have a "backup" of the old one unless your older iPod was actually an iPod Touch.

  • IPod Classic as the backup drive?

Can I use IPod Classic 160GB as a backup of a MBP with time machine? have Leopard installed but Time Machine isn't recognizing the IPod drive. Has somebody done this by reformatting the IPod or by some other means?

    Hey,
The hard drives inside iPods are not designed to be used like the ones you find in laptops and desktops. They cannot withstand with all the spinning that normal drives are used to. And also, if you were to use it as your backup, you would have to format it with Disk Utility which would render it useless as an iPod.
You can get external hard drives for really cheap nowadays anyway.

  • IPod Classic 160 as backup drive?

Does anyone use an iPod as a backup drive for your MacBook? I don't
own an iPod yet, but I am considering the Classic 160gb. Someone
said it wouldn't be a good idea because you lose all data everytime
you reset the iPod. I realize there are cheaper backup drives, but
    they aren't iPods!

I use my iPod to store important things that I want two copies of in case my main backup fails. SuperDuper is good for doing this. I don't restore my iPod that often and even if I did it would be easy using SuperDuper to reset the back up in the iPod. I suggest you get a regular external hard drive to be safe. iPods are good but carrying your only back up in your pocket is not ideal. Externals are real cheap. I paid less than a $100.00 USD for a 250 GB USB drive.

    Hey there oochow69,
It sounds like your iPod Classic is grayed out in iTunes when you connect it to your computer after a recent OS upgrade. I recommend the troubleshooting in the article named:

  • Ipod Classic 160gb transfer data software? Do Apple provide any facilities to recapture all music etc from an ipod classic and save them back into the itunes library or even better onto a separate pc memory or external drive for backup purposes?

I now have around 3,000 songs on my ipod Classic and still adding. I didn't want to save them in itunes library so I deleted them from there once I had them on the ipod. I have since found out that the ipod music cannot be transferred back to the itunes library nor can I extract them from the ipod directly. Do apple provide such facilities or softwareto do this and, if not, is there any recommended and safe software to perform it? I see from Google that there are plenty of programs available but I want to be sure that what I use is safe, reliable and not breaking any of Apple's terms and conditions. Any advice would be welcome.

    Hello Chris Jones,
I just found this and I'm trying to figure it out so your post is an excellent starting point, thank you! Since you posted this in Feb are there any things you would change or you found out after doing it? And how is everything running?
As a data point, I just added a SSD as the startup drive to an older mac pro (1,1) which is only used for Logic Pro and the speed now is amazing. Now I want to see if I can off-load the same things you have dealt with. Any additional insight will be greatly appreciated and thanks again for taking to time to document it.
