IPod Classic as Windows Boot Disk?

Hi friends,
In trying to use my PC-formatted iPod classic (160gb) as a boot disk for my MacBook Pro, I've been having some problems. WindowsXP setup says my computer won't be able to boot from the classic, and therefore won't install onto it. Is this new behavior? I seem to remember iPods functioning as normal external drives in addition to having the iPod data on them -- is there some reason I can't just throw Windows onto my iPod alongside its existing contents?
Please advise!

2. Mac OS X can start up from an USB drive on an Intel Mac, and occasionally on a PowerPC Mac. Apple does not support using the iPod as a startup disk; any damage caused to the iPod as a result will not be covered by the limited warranty or AppleCare. An iPod may overheat if it is used to start up Mac OS X.

  • My iPod Classic Is Stuck In Disk Mode.. Help?

Hiya! My iPod Classic Is Stuck in disk mode, and I tried the hard reset and EVERYTHING, and it still doesn't work. When I connect it to my computer (Windows) It doesn't show up in iTunes, Or on the "My Computer" area. Any Help?

When you did a hard reset on your iPod, what do you see on the screen?

  • IPod Classic won't boot, Windows wants to reformat it, iTunes ignores it.

Hello everyone, hopefully someone can help. I was using my 80Gb iPod Classic as a portable hard-drive today at school, when, during a file copying process, it told me to please insert a disk drive. I safely removed it, and plugged it back in. It displayed the Apple logo, then said "connect to iTunes to restore". I took it back home, and plugged it in. In My Computer it appears as a Removable Disk, and double-clicking it, a window pops up telling me to reformat the disk drive.
iTunes does not detect it, and I've updated the iTunes software, still no luck. The iPod itself doesn't turn on properly, I can get into the diagnostics windows, and everything seems to be working fine there. When in the reformating window, there is no option to set it as FAT32 file system, and the capacity is unknown.
I think there's probably a corrupted file preventing it from booting, but I'm not sure. Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

When the iPod is connected to iTunes, look on the Device/Podcasts section and make sure Sync Podcasts is on.

  • Ipod Classic Re-Formatted In Disk Utility Not Being Recognized

I last posted about this question 4 months ago on this forum and still havent received an answer that works. My Silver Ipod Classic 80GB was used to update the OS on my computer. Foolishly I partitioned the disk on it using disk utility and updated my computer. After i tried to erase the partition the ipod stopped being recognized as an ipod on my mac running OSX. It is recognized as a hard drive. I formatted it with Mac OSX extended Journaled in disk utility and nothing seems to work. When i plug it in itunes auto starts and pops up but the Ipod simply doesnt show up in the side bar. I have tried it on all different macs and windows computers and it still wont be recgonized on the mac. On the windows machine i am able to reformatt it so it works with a PC but when i plug it into a mac itunes autostarts and it still isnt recognized as an ipod
    help would be greatly appreciated

i dono man, but I have exactly the same prob. if u wouldn't mind letting me know if you figure it out I will be happy to send u a quick message if I figure it out first

  • Restore problems w/ iPod Classic in Windows Vista

    Hello everyone,
I'm having something of a cyclical problem with my 160GB iPod Classic. The iPod has stopped working and displays the message "use Windows to restore" when I turn it on. When I connect the iPod to my computer to attempt the restore, I first get a message in a dialog box that reads "you need to format the disc drive E: before you can use it." When I choose the option to format the disk, iTunes opens and a new windows dialog box opens and offers to format the iPod, but stops shortly thereafter, with a new message reading "Windows was unable to complete the format." This happens when the iPod is in disk mode as well. iTunes does not recognize the iPod, either.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and what needs to be done to solve it?
    Thanks for your time.

    Thanks, Bilbo.
I ran the disk diagnostic two times and got these numbers:
    1st time:
    retracts: 114
    reallocs: 0
    pending sectors: 17
    power-on hours: 72
    starts/stops: 101
    temp current: 26c
    temp min: 18c
    temp max: 54c
I attempted a restore again, which failed, then ran the diagnostic again:
    retracts: 134
    reallocs: 0
    pending sectors: 17
    power-on hours: 72
    starts/stops: 103
    temp current: 28c
    temp min: 18c
    temp max: 54c
The only thing of interest that changed seems to be the retracts, but according to the article you linked to, 17 pending sectors seems to point toward hard drive failure. Can you corroborate this?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • ALT. SOLUTION !!! SONGBIRD - no proB with ipod classic  in Windows XP SP2

may be after waiting for next few months(?!!) for the APPLE designers to fix their itunes 7.6 goof-up with windows XP or with new ipod classic , i may try next itunes version....though i have not a bit of interest left to tune in with "itunes" ;-(
as of now- i hv, at least, started enjoying my ipod classic w/o any troubles ;D
Hope Songbird brings smiles on your faces too...Go ahead..
    God Bless ITUNES 7.6

    Hi,
I ran into this a few months back... and ultimately i posted some how-to's on here... but basically something got botched with the isntallation... and what i learned thru pain was that un-installing and re-installing wasn't enough because the un-install process did not remove (registry entries, files/directories, services, ports, etc... in order to make for a clean reinstall).
I also learned that the downloadable software does not have all of the framework needed for communication.  So I had to find my original install disk and i had to go thru a very painfull (30min to 1hr) search and destroy registry mission... and other software removal steps.  Once i got the software off completely and re-isntalled the sol man software worked without issue on detecting and finding the device and using the software.
Now since then i read in another article (you can find it)... that HP provided a 2nd more advanced removal tool... but I'm not sure how well that works...
Again if you search for my posts i think i put everything in there that you need to do.... and i do agree that I will never by a nother mid grade small office printer from HP... hardware is fine but software support and workability is complete *#&%)#&

  • I cannnot eject my iPod classic in Windows 7 because it says there is another program using it

I am unable to eject my iPod classic unless I go to the My Computer in Windows Explorer and hitting eject. I cannot eject it through iTunes. Is there a way to find what program is using it and stop it so that I can eject it through iTunes again?

Also I'd suggest checking to see "Enable disk use" or "Manually manage music and videos" options enabled on the device's summary screen under options because you have to manually eject the ipod before disconnecting the interface cable if either option is enabled. If so, try turning off whichever one is enabled and click apply in the lower right corner. The ipod will re-sync on its own and if that's what the issue was, should auto-disconnect when the sync completes.

  • Unknown Device ipod Classic and Windows Vista problem??

Help!! My ipod Classic is not being recognized by my computer. I have read the previous articles and tried the solutions but I continue to get the result "Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date" I continue to get the error noise when I plug the USB in and the Device manager continues to say "Unknown Device" It seems others are having this problem, how do I fix this?

I am having the same trouble with mine, and I can say that it isn't iTunes, I plugged my brothers iPod Nano in and it worked like a charm, but when I plugged my iPod Classic 160g in all it says is it is an "unknown divice". It isn't Vista either as the same thing happens on XP Pro as well, so all I can think of is it is a error on the Classic itself. I just wish someone can help out so that I can use my ipod!!!! Come on Apple!!!! Solve this problem!!!!

  • Ipod classic 120gb stuck in disk mode

i have a ipod classic 120gb and im having issues with it. i am unable to get it out of disk mode, my computer and itunes will not recognize it. ive tried all the steps ive seen in the forums still no luck. ive tried other usb port and other computers with no luck. it is almost 4 yrs old so warranty and other options are expired. does anyone have any suggestions?

That's super odd. It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Ipod Classic with Windows/32bits

Does "Ipod Classic - Last Generation" work using Netbook with Windows/32bit?

    Hey guidoxy,
Thanks for the question. The iPod classic technical specifications include the minimum Windows system requirements, as long as your PC meets these requirements, your iPod classic should be compatible:
Apple - iPod classic - Technical Specifications
    http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html
    Windows system requirements
    - PC with USB 2.0 port
    - Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, or 32-bit editions of Windows 7
      - iTunes 10.7 or later
    Thanks,

  • ITunes won't read my iPod Classic, but Windows does; tried many solutions!

    Hey Apple Support Community,
I wasn't sure whether this post belonged in the iPod forum or the iTunes forum as the matter concerns both, so I decided to post in both forums. My apologies if this is 'spammy'. (iPod forum is a little old anyway).
I just dug up my 6 year old iPod Classic from the grave and would like to start using it again as my HTC's headphone jack is extremely faulty lately. My iPod Classic is completely empty - I have no music, no photos, nor videos on it.
My problem is that on my Windows 8 Laptop, Windows is able to read the iPod, however, iTunes cannot. I went over to the Support page and tried almost every recommended solution out there, and nothing seems to work.
    I have:
    Tried different USB ports
Performed a Restore/Recovery after selecting 'Format' from Windows ExplorerIt is interesting to note that, whilst iTunes doesn't read the iPod normally, it did show up in the button (Spotlight button?) next to the iTunes button when performing a Restore
Uninstalled and Reinstalled every Apple application and program from my Laptop, including iTunes, Mobile Support, Bonjour, and more, and also, deleting any remaining folders related to Apple.
I have tried alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTrans and Syncios, but all seem to fail.
    Troubleshooted my iPod various times
Restarted any Apple related Service as well as any Processes from Task Manager
Searched for Updates on Device manager -> Apple Driver and everything is up to date
    It's worth pointing out that:
When opening the iPod folder in Windows Explorer (after enabling Hidden Folders), inside the 'iPod_Control' folder, there is no 'Music' folder; not sure if this is intentional or simply because there is no music file on my iPod.
The Software Version (which displays prior selecting 'Restore') is 2.0.1. If this is outdated, the option to Update Software is greyed out and unavailable.
My iTunes is up to date.
iTunes does tend to freeze up when attempting to read the device, but is perfectly fine after a while, it just does not display the device (implying it must have failed to detect it).
It is the first time using iTunes on this laptop (laptop is 4 months old), and has never had an Apple Device connected to it before.
iPod and iTunes used to work fine 6 years ago on a different PC which is no longer at me.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate for any further information related to both iPod or Laptop.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I ran Diagnostics and the results are as follows:
    Retracts: 38
    Reallocs: 56
    Pending Sectors: 8
    PowerOn Hours: 165
    Start/Stops: 12666
    Temp: Current 29C
    Temp: Min 15C
    Temp: Max 52C
I heard that a large number of Reallocs is bad; not sure if 56 qualifies as a large number. Would this somehow interfere with iTunes not being able to read the iPod?
EDIT: Your instructions say to attempt another Diagnostics after updating however my iPod will not update past 2.0.1 (I believe that is the last update that came out for iPod Classics), unless you'd like me to recover/restore it and then try again.

  • Mac Mini stuck looking for Windows Boot Disk! Please help

Hi all, I've been running Leopard on my Mac Mini off a FireWire hard drive enclosure. The 750gb hard drive in the enclosure is a drive I used to have in my old iMac.
When I had my iMac I'd installed Windows via Bootcamp. So when running, the Mac Mini would show a Windows partition on the Leopard desktop. Today I needed to do something in Windows. so I went to Sys Prefs > Startup Disk and chose to reboot into that Windows partition. BIG MISTAKE
Now whenever I turn the Mini on it looks for a Windows partition and tells me it can't find one. I've tried resetting the PMU, booting from Leopard DVD, holding Option, nothing works. The only thing that will work is if I put a Windows XP disk in and it will try and take me through the install process.
How on earth do I get my Mac back booting into Leopard!?

I can't believe it was just the new Apple thin Alu Keyboard causing it! Plugged in an old Apple USB one and I got the Option startup menu straight away, totally bizarre!
