IPod Classic Cannot Be Read Or Written To Or Restored

Hi,
I have a 160 GB iPod classic which had about 40 GB free on it, but I cannot get iTunes to synchronise or restore.
If I try to synch,  iTunes shows the following error message;
'Attempting to copy to the disk "Andrew's iPod Classic" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
So tonight I thought i should try and restore it, but after several minutes it popped this error message:
'There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "Andrew's iPod Classic". You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.'
After having selected the OK button my iPod has nothing on it at all now. So whether i try to synch or restore, it always shows those two error messages.
I also tried using the "Manage Tracks & Playlists' option. But although I can see the tracks i manually moved over in the ipods music section when its connected to itunes, they dont show up on the iPod itself when i have ejected it from the computer.
My iPod is about 18 months old, so no warranty repair possible.
I have tried for several evenings to sort this, and cannot understand the problem.
Can anyone please advise me how to proceed?
Im using OS X 10.7.5 iTunes is 10.7 and my iPod is 2.0.4
Thank you.

Try repairing permissions on the disk using Disk Utility. If that fails, do a low level reformat instead using the instructions in this article.

  • Ipod Shuffle Cannot Be Read or written to :(

hi ppl, i got a 512Mb shuffle, when i just got it, it works fine, but after a while it refuses to let me put any songs on it,
it says "ipod cannot be read or written to" any1 have any suggestions?? i also have a 60GB video ipod and it works fine... is the shuffle a piece of shlt??
any suggestions or tips will be appreciated!

I fixed this problem with my Shuffle! Here’s what worked for me. During install, Apple asked me what to call my Shuffle. Like a fool, I gave it a name like, “Jim’s iPod”. Dumb. I forgot about using forbidden characters enforced by Windows, especially for removable flash drives (which is what the iPod really is). That stupid apostrophe is what did it for the unit. After a while, iTunes couldn’t find a drive with an unrecognized character. Simple.
This is what I did (Windows XP machine):
1.) Go to your Windows machine’s control panel and use the “Add or Remove Software” function to uninstall iTunes (don’t worry, your playlists will all come back when you re-install the Apple software)
2.) Also uninstall the iPod drivers and any updaters
3.) Restart Windows (it’ll make you do this anyway)
4.) Once your up an running, plug-in the iPod to the usual USB port and then open up “My Computer”. Browse over to the drive designation for the iPod. It’ll just be listed as a flash drive at this point, with your goofy name (Jim’s iPod).
5.) Find the iPod listed as a removable drive and format it (yep, blow it away, wipe it clean, yes, be sure you’ve got the right drive). Remove the iPod from the USB port when finished!
6.) Re-install the software from your Apple Shuffle CD
7.) Re-start your computer as it indicates
8.) Start iTunes and verify it’s working.
9.) Plug in your Shuffle to the USB port. Apple will see it as a blank drive and then ask you what you want to call your iPod. Here’s the important part: give it a name without any forbidden characters (?’/-.:”, etc.). A single word would be even better. THIS IS THE DRIVE’S NAME TO WINDOWS!
I did this and my Shuffle is now no longer moving toward the trash can. Music once again!

Just doublechecking. In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

  • IPod Classic Cannot Be Read By iTunes

Yesterday after charging my iPod,once disconnecting it I realised that there wasn't any music on the iPod which I thought was stragne. So I connected it back to my PC and for some odd reason it isn't be read by iTunes however it does show that the iPod is connected on My Computer. Also, when I connect it my iTunes freezes and so does My Computer.
Any idea whats up guys ?

I am having similar problems. After seven months of working perfectly, itunes doesnt want to recognise my ipod. I have been through all the steps on the document suggested and tried various network drive letters for the ipod. I have reinstalled itunes 5 times now. The ipod is clearly there when i go into explorer, the computer recognises it as my ipod but when Iopen itunes, the option to sunc ipod is greyed out and there is no sign of the ipod. have tried resetting the ipod whilst it is connected to the comuter and itunes and when its not. Nothing seems to be working.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before I pull all my hair out. Cheers

  • When using USB input iPod classic won't read in new car

Just bought a new car with a factory iPod ready stereo system. When using the USB input iPod Classic won't read but son's iPod touch does. Anyway I can fix this? I know my Classic works fine as I was using it in my other car and it works in my wife's car. Is the car just too new therefore making my Classic incompatible and soon to be obsolete?

the best option is to contact the car manufacturer or look at the manual to make sure it supports your ipod verision. if it is a custom radio then look then contact the manufacturer or look at the manual for same thing. you can try a reset with http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320.

  • IPod cannot be read or written to

I uploaded several new albums (about 130 songs) to my 30G iPod two days ago. But, as I was listening through them, I noticed the iPod had the tendency to arbitrarily skip to the next track or pause the song and refuse to continue playing it. It also never did it twice to the same song in the same place.
To solve this problem, I decided to set the iPod to manual update, remove the problem songs and re-upload them to the iPod (since they worked perfectly in iTunes, I knew the songs themselves weren't the issue.)
But, moments after I dragged-and-dropped them into the iPod icon, I got an error message that read "The iPod, IPOD cannot be updated because it cannot be read from or written to." I had never gotten such an error message, but I was sure it was just a minor fault in the program. But, when I tried to eject the iPod, I got another error message that read "The iPod cannot be ejected because it is in use by another program." So, I closed every application that was running and tried ejecting it from the Mac desktop. But, I got the same error message. So, I restarted the computer in hopes of closing any programs that might've been running in the background that I was unaware of. But, all the same error messages prevailed even after doing so. Finally, I decided that restoring the iPod to factory settings would do the trick. It is, after all, supposed to be a failsafe to anything that could cause trouble with an iPod's software.
But, when i tried restoring, the same message regarding the iPod's inability to be read or written to came up.
Next, I shut down the Mac and connected the iPod to the Window's desktop in the living room to try and restore it that way. And indeed, it worked. I then reconnected the iPod to the Mac and tried syncing all 4,667 of my songs to it. But, when it got a bit past 1,000 songs, the familiar error that had kept me from updating and restoring it before came up. And from that point on, I was again unable to do anything to change any kind of setting or information on the iPod via the Mac.
So, I restored it using the desktop again.. and so on ad infinitum for the past couple days.
I feel like I've tried everything I know to do. Is there any step I can take to remedy this situation short of calling for support from apple?

I had very similar problems. I think I have the solution.
The problem that I was having was that I had plugged the iPod into a 4-port USB 2.0 hub, manufactured by Belkin, and sold at the Apple stores. Apparently, there wasn't enough power getting to the iPod to write to it.
It never occurred to me that this might be a problem because the hub worked fine with my 5+ year old iPod.
So when I kept having problems with my new iPod classic, I thought I had bought a defective iPod. (It was a refurb). So I went and bought a brand new iPod. Similar problem. Except with the new one, I couldn't even get the iPod to be recognized by the computer. So as a shot in the dark, I unplugged it from the Belkin hub and plugged it directly into the computer. It worked perfectly. I wondered if that was, in fact, the problem with the refurbished iPod, so I tried syncing that one as well. It worked perfectly as well.
It's extremely frustrating for several reasons: First, its inconceivable that they would sell this hub at the Apple store if it is not fully compatible with all Apple products. Second, the error messages I kept getting had nothing to do whatsoever with the actual problem, which further led me and the Apple tech people on a wild goose chase trying to diagnose the problem. Third, Apple doesn't seem to acknowledge this problem. And its especially troublesome because the hub would be the last thing you would think of as being the problem. I've had this hub for 6 months and its never been a problem with any of my other hardware. And since Apple is selling it at their stores, you'd never suspect it wouldn't be compatible with the crown jewel of Apple products, the iPod.
So, try plugging the iPod directly into the computer and see what happens. And if this works, then call up Apple Tech Support and rip them a new one for both causing and then refusing to recognize this problem.

  • IPod disc "cannot be read from or written to" error

I have a 60gb color iPod which was just replaced by Apple due to an unrelated issue. The replacement iPod has trouble synching to my G5 tower via the USB cable. in iTunes, I get the error "Attempting to copy to the disk <iPod Name> Failed. The disc cannot be read from or written to." This occurs twice, once while iTunes tries copying music over, and then again when it tries copying photos over. Some of the songs incrementally copy over (maybe six or eight at a time), but I have thosuands of songs, so obviously this isn't practical. I have undertaken the steps described in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267 with no success.
Meanwhile, in the system.log, I'm seeing error messages as follows:

The "data underrun" line appears in the log just as iTunes displays the previously mentioned error dialogue box - they appear connected.
I am running OS X 10.4.5, iTunes 6.0.3, and the iPod is running 1.2.1 of the firmware. I have taken my iPod into the local Apple store, and the iPod syncs just fine with the in-store systems, both over USB and firewire. I just have the USB cable at home.
Help with troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Thank you so much! This is greatly appreciated. SERIOUSLY, man. How long have I been searching for this? And it would be so easy to just plug it up on that that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267 page. Hello, apple. Please do this.

  • IPod Classic: Cannot Restore?

For a long time now my iPod couldn't sync new music from my iTunes, but the songs originally in it still played. So I waited it out. But last week, I couldn't stand it anymore so I tried asking around, and they told me I should just restore it. I plugged it in and it said:
"iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
And I know, because I've tried, that the latter does not do anything to help at all. So I clicked RESTORE. And when I do so, it tells me a newer version (1.1.2) has been downloaded and asks whether or not I want to restore with the old version or the new. If I choose USE NEW VERSION:
"Are you sure you want to restore the iPod "iPod" to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased."
    a) At this point, they already changed my iPod's name.
    b) I, of course, clicked RESTORE.
It then says, "Extracting software...". Then, "Restoring iPod..". Next it tells me that my iPod is restored & it's restarting & to keep my iPod connected. My iPod shuts off, turns on, but does not appear in iTunes or my computer. The iPod is now empty but 1 of the original games still won't work.
Sometimes it says that it could not be restored because of unknown error. Now, when I open the iPod, click Vortex, it loads, then shuts down. And restarts. So, it constantly shuts itself down now. And there's nothing left in it. When it shuts down, it is as if it reset itself. It goes back to the Choose A Language Page and all changes made (like the date) are reset.
Side notes: I had a friend take my iPod home to check if it was just my computer, but it did the same thing.
I have warranty until October (If I bought the iPod at Futureshop, do I go there, or to the Apple Store to ask for help...?).

  • Error message disk/file cannot be read or written to

Every time I get to a certain point in the syncing of my itunes library, this error message will appear. Once in reference to Itunes, and again in reference to the device. It worked fine before with the same songs, and a few weeks ago this started happening so I cannot sync my entire library to my ipod anymore, only a small portion. Also many of the songs that are not able to sync will cause my itunes window to freeze if I try to play them on the computer. I have updated all my software for itunes and the entire computer, I even have bought a new ipod but the error message is still there. I am operating with mac OS X 10.7.5, and my firewall is turned off. There are some TCP ports that I think need to be opened that arent, namely 80 and 443, but i dont know how to do that? please help in clear language, I am a little worried about messing around with my computers operating system since I am not quite sure what I am doing.

    - Try a reset and then connect. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try another cable
    - Try another USB port
    - Try another cable to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem
If you still get the error all you can do is restore the iPod.
