IPod Classic connection issue

Just bought the 80 gig Classic and have already had issues. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1243711. Finally got this resolved and synched the iPod to iTunes. Now, I can't get the d**n thing to connect again. The screen says CONNECTING Do Not Disconnect, then switches to EJECTING You May Disconnect. This thing is aggravating the crap out of me. With my older Zen Vision M, I installed the software, hooked up the device and away we went. I bought the iPod because I figured it was the best. Apparently I was way wrong! No support except for this discussion group (Oh, aside from the ONE call you can make!! Gee, which issue do I use my call for!) Anyway, I've searched and can't find reference to this issue, so does anyone have any ideas? If I can't get this resolved soon, it's going back to Best Buy and Apple ain't getting a good grade from me. Thanks for any help. BTW, it's iTunes v 7.5.

I'm having this exact same problem -- in fact I cannot connect at all -- it says "connected" then immediately disconnects itself. Interestingly for me too not allowing the cable to click in also seems to do the trick.
Definitely seems to be some sort of cable mating issue. Changing cables doesn't do the trick either...

  • Ipod classic connects to Itunes for a few seconds, then disconnects. Cannot sync!

Help! I have followed all guidelines to uninstall Itunes and related software many times in the past two days. I have reinstalled multiple versions (downgrades) - none have worked. I have tried disabling processes, running Windows in safe mode, and running Itunes in safe mode. I have tried reinstalling the driver. All with the same result.
My ipod classic connects to the computer, shows up as a USB drive, and shows up for a few seconds in Itunes. As soon as it shows up in Itunes, the ipod screen says "synchronizing" (I do not have it set to auto-synchronize), then it immediately says "ok to disconnect." At this point, I can click the ipod icon in Itunes, but anything I try to do says the ipod can't be found (because it ejects itself when it's picked up by itunes).
I have tried resetting the ipod (not restoring) and I have tried to connect it under a different user on the same computer with the same result. At first when I reinstalled itunes I kept getting error messages or obvious problems with the install, but I finally got what seems to be a clean install without any error messages of version 12.0.1.26. All the other version 12's gave me ituneshelper64 dll errors. Any earlier versions and I can get my library back in, but it isn't correct.
I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 64-bit. I used my ipod many days a week to listen to books and music on the road. Please help!

Indeed. I forgot about them. Thanks.

  • TS1369 iPod Classic Connection Problem

My iPod Classic is not being recognized by Windows or iTunes. I spent hours going through all the troubleshooting scenarios today, swapping cables, iPod's, etc. I can't seem to locate an iPod USB driver in Device Manager, and there doesn't seem to be any troubleshooting steps to deal with this situation. Any suggestions?

    Hey there Joeyleo,
It sounds like you are unable to use any USB accessories with your iPod Classic. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article:
    iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant
    https://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Here is step one to get you started, but there is additional troubleshooting within if needed:
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
    Tip:
If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • IPod Classic: Photos Issue: Photos on iPod Show Black Screen - Replicated!

Issue / My Solution related to format = PC / Windows
*FINALLY! I've replicated the issue where some random pictures in iPod photos show as a thumbnail, DON'T show when clicked with center button (instead a nice friendly black screen is shown) but DO show when you click the center button again to start Slide Show.*
Firstly, I'll start by saying that this was one of 4-5 issues that caused me to go to my local Apple store today & get my SECOND replacement (3rd iPod Classic; Black; 160 GB). It made me laugh when the technicians told me the truth; since Apple never preps even their own people for new products to possibly get trained on so that maybe they're more technically knowledgeable then their consumers when they go on sale, this store's approach has typically been 'Problem with a 6th Generation? Here's a new one'.
It's been a quick & easy way to satisfy customers while getting them no where, but they go home thinking their new unit will work, when in reality it was never a hardware issue.
Anyways, I exchanged 2 x 160 GB & 1 x 80 GB tonight for many of the same reasons, truthfully because I felt I'm due new units after the amount of times I've reimaged (restored) each by restoring all versions of the firmware software.
Many of you have experienced the photo issue I mentioned above before going off on my tangent, many of you may not have (yet).
Well, I'm 1,000% that I replicated this one:
*When restoring one of the iPods replaced, I conveniently noticed that the pictures which showed up blank on my iPod had illegal characters in their Windows Filenames.*
*These characters can include, but are not limited to:*
    *apostrophe ('); comma (,); period (.)*
*Again, the characters above are the only ones I've identified so far; granted that it should not ultimately be like this; the iPod should accept filenames containing these characters & if it can't or it's too hard for it to accept them, iTunes should display a warning to the end user to change the filenames with illegal characters.*
In conclusion, I'm about to unwrap my new 160 GB & sync it. I will avoid & hold off with the 1.0.2 update for as long as possible in hopes that a 1.0.3 comes out soon; especially since the only noticeable difference it made for me was a faster & more responsive & sturdy Cover Flow (don't even use anyways) + shuts off in my JBL Dock at work (replicated as a bug in 1.0.2; workaround: use PLAY, PAUSE & other controls on the unit itself, not with the dock or remote control on the dock.)
I learned my lesson the hard way & will definitely wait a few days until 1.0.3 is released to see how it really is by feedback posted here in this forum. For all you newbies, this is the best advice I can offer; don't bank on 1 or 2 posts, read a bunch. When you start seeing a pattern of problems, you know something can't be right. It's funny how you look at the post history of these updates (1.0.1 & 1.0.2 & you see all those who jumped to install post only the nicest things & the great enhancements they see, until a day later they're hit with the negatives of that build.
_*+--> Truth is,_ I can't believe Apple has gotten away without releasing 1.0.3 by now.+*
*+If this keeps up, I hate to say it, but their ratings will definitely go down the tubes (not being negative, just a realist).+*
    Any thoughts?

I don't think it's illegal file names. I've noticed that the file takes a while to "load" even when after you see the thumbnail in the main screen. A few back and forths and hearing the hard drive spinning finally confirmed that it would take a while for the pic to show up...extremely annoying, but a hard drive type issue methinks. Photos that show up once, don't show up again or take forever to do so and vice versa.
Not sure how this affects firmware as I'm not techy (I'm jazzy :)).
I'm going to let all my photos "fully load", and then try it again.
    I tried your method on 3 sixth generations with this issue (2 x 80gb & 1 x 160gb). I let them sit for 12 minutes; no picture.
Changed filename to remove a comma found in the names; then I sync it again & ALL BETTER.

  • Yet Another Faulty iPod Classic - Connects to "computer" but not iTunes

In Oct 2009, I purchased 160GB Classic and is now out of warranty so unable to replace, and i am not too keen on buying another one (NZD $470 RRP).
It had been working as per normal until Dec 2010 when I tried to sync the iPod on newly updated iTunes (10.1) then it started to freeze during sync and now, it doesn't sync any longer. It is howing as "connected" on the iPod and in "My Computer", but doesn't show up in iTunes at all.
iTunes also freezes (doesn't work whatsoever) while my iPod is plugged in to my computer. I have tried everything that the "Apple" help sites suggest (the 5 "R's", formatting, disk mode etc) you name it, but to no avail.
Trying to fix this problem is becoming frustrating and time consuming. My wifes iPhone 4 works perfectly so I know it's not the computer or iTunes itself. As I (had) trust in Apple products, I would expect this to last for more than 15 months.
I have no idea how this all came to be, and would just like it to work as normal again. What a way for Apple to earn its' "money"...
PLEASE, if ANYONE can help here, it would be very much appreciated.

I purchased 4 x iPod Classic 160gb units between July 2008 and March 2009 (and a 120gb Classic with which we have not had a problem). One unit worked for one day and had to be returned and was replaced with a new unit. The other three all failed within the 12 month warranty period and were replaced by Apple. Of the four replacements, three have now failed about 15 months after they were replaced. Of course the units are outside warranty (in particular due to Apple only offering the greater of 3 months warranty or the remainder of the original warranty). The units haven’t been subjected to any forceful knocks and as demonstrated by the lack of physical marks on the units.
To have 7 out of 8 units fail in this timeframe is in my opinion indicative of a fundamental flaw in the build quality or design of the units. After putting my case to Apple Australia I finally received a reply confirming that the units were out of warranty and nothing could/would be done - but they did offer a "thank you gift" of a credit of up to $125 at the Apple Store if I spent at least $425.
I replied that this wasn’t satisfactory but took up the credit whilst it was offered to at least get some discount off a new 160gb Classic (more reliable I am led to believe!). I am now out of pocket over $770 with replacement three units and still have one remaining unit that could die at any time.
Apple is no longer replying to my emails. If anyone with similar experiences would like to join together to put pressure on Apple to make good, or pursue other actions via consumer affairs, please reply on this forum.

  • Unusual? iPod Classic connection/sync problem

I have an 80Gb iPod Classic, and iTunes 8.1 running on Windows XP.
With iTunes open, I connect the iPod.
    The iPod screen says connecting...synchronising...
Then the iPod appears in the iTunes device list, and the iPod says ejecting...ok to disconnect.
I am left with iTunes open, and thinking it is connected to the iPod, and an iPod which is disconnected from it's iTunes Library.
If I try the sync button on iTunes it say synchronising for a little while, but doesn't update any files.
The upshot is that I can no longer add or remove anything from the iPod. Although all the original data is still there, and the iPod plays fine.
I have tried rebooting the PC, restarting the iPod, re-installing iTunes, and restoring the iPod factory settings, but I still have the same problem.
    Please help!

if you get a solution to this problem, I have identical troubles on my hp running vista and outlook 07 on both my classic 80 gig and nano 16gig

  • IPod classic connection

When I connect my 160 GB iPod classic to my computer, there's a capital "P" in the center of the bar at the top. Does anyone know why this is here, and if possible how to get rid of it?
    Thanks

this P is supposed to be "iPod", this occurs only when you have the option of "display time in title" enabled ... if you choose not to display time in title, "ipod" will be displayed instead of that "P".
this is a bug, and i hope apple will find a fix to it.

I have a 20g ipod wheel. My imac has no fire wire connection as does the ipod. The computer won't recognize or charge the ipod when i use a cable from an iphone, iphone 3gs,ipod mini. it will charge fine from its firewire on its charger. I need itunes to recognize this device, any ideas?

Your iPod is not an iPod classic. Check out this link to determine which iPod you have.

Some older iPods cannot charge via a USB connection, only via firewire.

Is the cable plugged into the headphone socket of your iPod?
If it is, and the the sound plays through both left and right when you use headphones, that suggests that there is something wrong with the auxilary cable or where it's plugged into.
Where does the auxilary cable plug into on the car's stereo?

  • Solution to ipod classic connection and sync problems in windows xp

Was having problems syncing and copying songs to my 80 GB classic on windows xp. Itunes would become unresponsive etc. Turns out these issues were related to a program called res.exe which is part of a usb mass storage toobox, which does not appear to be essential to windows.
In add/remove programs, I uninstalled "USB Mass Storage Toolbox", and my ipod classic now syncs as it should.

My IPod classic wont sync anymore and I fear the harddrive might be shot. the ipod deleted all my music randomly, I have restored it but now I cant get it to sync properly with itunes.
Itunes recognises it, and starts syncing (in manual and auto) however it freezes a few songs in and doesnt get any further. When I unplug the ipod, the error message comes up saying ipod sync failed, and lists a number of songs which it could not sync (different songs every time)
Is the problem with itunes or with the ipod harddrive?
Appriciate any help with this one,

  • IPod Classic Connectivity woes

I can no longer connect my beloved ol' iPod Classic to my (or any other!) PC/laptop.  Other iPods connect just fine, I've attempted various other cables, resetting the unit, etc., all to no avail.  It will, oddly enough, connect just fine to my Bose player and can recharge.  But without being able to connect to my PC, I can no long modify any of my music.  Anybody out there had this problem?  My main concern is accessing/modifying my music on my PC, interfacing with the ol' Classic.

  • Ipod Nano Connection Issues

I am having trouble getting my ipod to connect with my PC.
It has worked previously, as i have transfered 3gb of songs to my Ipod Nano so far.
However now when i try to connect my Ipod to my computer, i plug it in, and nothing happens. I can play with my ipod, there is no "Do not Disconnect" symbol appearing.
However, if i actually bend down the plastic part of the connector side to my ipod, so that it is kind of a 10° angle to my ipod (thus bending the connection isnide my ipod i guess) it reconises it.. Do Not Disconnect appears and it appears on itunes.
However i dont want to be constantly bending the connector down so that i can transfer songs, beacuse not only is it inconvenient, but it can't be good for my ipod.
I have no idea why its doing this, I have reset my ipod, re-installed, updated ipod software, tried different ports, i also tried my mates ipod lead to see if it was mine that was faulty. this didnt help, same problem.
I understand i can send it in for a service, but wasn't sure if this would come under servicable conditions?
Would appreciate some help that doesn't require sending my ipod away, but if there is no other choice, then i guess ill have to.
    Thanks in advance
