Ipod classic crashes intermittently and frequently
My 160 gb classic ipod that is no longer covered by warranty (purchased in 2007) makes some weird sounds in addition to crashing and freezing. sometimes I believe that the problem is due to the battery not holding a charge. At other times I wonder if there is a mechanical problem. The machine freezes and later spontaneously wakes up while on a dock. It appears to not recharge, has no battery charge, and within a few minutes of being docked, it wakes up and says that the battery is fully charged. However I've also watched it docked for days, where it doesn't wake up, won't accept a reset, won't give me the apple logo, etc, etc.
I am really disappointed that I cannot rely on this hard drive capacity. During one of the freezes the drive was reformatted and I lost what was stored on its large drive.
I can't decide whether to send the unit into Apple service for a diagnostic check and suffer the large cost or just call it a day, consider it a lemon/ a disposable electronic device and buy a new unit.
Any comments about how to interpret the weird noises in relationship to a glichey hard drive
I have a very similiar problem, in that what you describe occurs frequently AND it can happen even when just playing playlists, other than Genius.I did re-set the iPod and it seems to happen less but still happens nevertheless....any solutions ?

My ipod classic crashes after about 2-3 days of being attached to my Kenwood KDC-248C receiver in my Pickup. There are about 2700+ songs on the Ipod, but only get through the first 200 to 300 songs. The screen fades, but there is still power and a charge. Does anyone have a clue because I don't.?
There seem to be compatibilty isuue with KDC receiver and Ipod Classic firmware 1.1.2.
Here is an earlier post on the same problem.

I just Bought a IPod Classic 80 GB, and it is stuck!
I just bought a IPod Classic 80GB today, and it is stuck. On the screen it says ejecting you may disconnect now. I have disconnected. My question is how do I clear that?
Hmmm, I bought a 60-GB Ipod Classic at first then it was stolen. The thing is my 2 year warranty didn't kick-in, nether did my car insurance which doesn't cover theft.
So I had to take the loss and come up with cash for another Ipod but this time it was the 80-GB Classic. Now this one has crashed. So I may try ZUNE this time, are you listening @ APPLE ? I've only had this new one since July 7th- 07.
So far I've shelled out roughly $930.00 for two APPLE Ipods with the 2 year warranty in approve. 18 months.
Another thing is that I didn't transfer the warranty to the new Ipod. They don't tell you themselves about the transfer but you have to take the initiative yourself. They never offered to give me the paperwork. There you have it the pitfall of not transferring your warranty. Without that warranty you are left holding the bag. So get that warranty puuuleeeezze. -
Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned as it had a very noisy hard drive).
How do I transfer the library from the 160gb to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista.
Nothing seems to help on the Apple support pages, so any help would be appreciated
ThanksThanks for the reply, but not actually sure how to sync a second iPod with the library of the first, as I thought it would not recognise a new iPod for copyright reasons.
Also, the files are in a location on the pc but I had to do lots of formatting amendments in iTunes as most of the stuff was on mp3 files and the formatting was all over the place. I did not want to loose any of the work by simply asking the new iPod to look at the original file and would rather copy en masse from one device to another.
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated

Hello. I have an ipod classic generation 4 and I want to add some more music to it however my computer and itunes do not recognise the device when I try to connect it. Is it incompatible with windows 7 or current version of itunes?
It should still be compatible. Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port using a different cable to see if that helps? Perhaps, try it another computer as well to see if it's recognized there.
Otherwise, start by checking to see if it's even recognized in Device Manager. See this article for details.

Make an appointment at the genius bar.
If you went without an appointment, then it would make sense that you could be turned away. -
IPod classic is locked and wants a combination. Never set one. How do I unlock?
iPod classic is locked and wants a combination. Never set one. How do I unlock?
Is your iPad new in the sense of being brand new or is it the latest generation?
If you do not have very much on it you could connect it to iTunes on your computer (if you use one) and on the screen that pops up starting with the Summary tab click on the Restore button further down. Be sure to set it up as a new device? You will lose any saved data but at least it will unlock your device. Alternatively, you could could do it through Settings on your ipad. Either way, you my have to redownload your purchased apps again. -
My ipod classic has frozen and ive tried the recommended solution but it remains frozen. Please can you advise?
I don't know what the "recommended solution" is unless you describe it, so did you try a Reset

This restarts the iPod, like rebooting a computer. -
I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!
You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

My iPod Classic was stolen and returned to me by police but now it "cannot be synced because it cannot be written to or read from". I noticed the thief had changed the format to "windows" but I have restored it and still get the same message.
If the media is in the library then yes it is that simple. Connect the device, load it up with your media. The problem is when you try to connect a full device to a new empty library on a new computer when iTunes will offer to replace the content on the device with that in the local library, i.e. nothing! (For anyone in that position see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device).
You should be able to add your devices at https://supportprofile.apple.com/ though I'm not sure what happens if the second hand iPod was previously registered.

be sure and take good care of your "Classic", as it truly is a classic (discontinued) - I have seen new-in-the-box on eBay for ±$499 / 160GB model - used around $150-250

I have a sync problem when trying to sync multiple cd's I've downloaded into itunes, at the same time. I have an ipod classic 160 GB, and use itunes 11.0.1. If I delete the songs from itunes, reload the same discs one at a time, and sync after each individual cd, all goes well. What's going on and what's the fix?
Thanks for your help Jim
I found some info in other threads and read that some people had re-downloaded, re-installed and were now working OK. Unfortunately some others went through that pain and still had the issue.
I found a reference to deleting the file 'iTunes Library.itl' and copying back the previous version of that file.
I tried this and when I fired up iTunes I noticed there was a window pop up saying iTunes was updating the database to version 11. I then re-imported the CD and now the songs are there in iTunes, the artwork is there and song titles etc. The songs play and everything appears normal again.
It would appear that my issue was the database was not correctly upgraded correctly durting the original upgrade, this theory is to some extent supported by the fact some people have had success re-installing version 11. This also suggests the upgrade process may be a little flaky.
Anyway thank you to the person suggesting downgrading the 'iTunes Library.itl' file, sorry I did not take a note of your name. -
Why does my music sound so differant on seperate devices ?.
same song differs in quality between ipod classic , nano , macbook and ipad.
do the devices have power output ratings if so is one more powerful than the other ?.
same song , same headphones all downloaded from the same sourceDoesn't anybody have any ideas why diagnostics say "no universal serial bus controller found" and yet founds connected device information just fine?
IPod and iPhone appears in itunes and device manager with no problem, but syncing stops with error everytime.
Do you think that this would be an issue with: ITunes, Windows 8 or Asus Maximus V Formula motherboard?
Am I right, that diagnostics should find universal serial bus controller even though there was nothing attach to it?
Am I alone with this problem?
I have also iPod 4gb and iPod 8gb, which shows in itunes, but I'm affraid to sync them if those stops same way. -
My Ipod classic is corrupted and I only get the red X on the screen...Cannot move to any other screens. Any ideas on fixing without paying Applw?
Unfortunately there isn't. A Red X is usually an indicator that the HDD has failed, if you are unable to restore the device using iTunes and also not able to reformat using windows prior to restoring then a hardware repair is needed. If your iPod is out of warranty then the pricing you pay is to have the iPod replaced not repaired. You're looking at 129.00 - 179.00 plus shipping depending on the gen.
