IPod Classic Freezes

I have had the new iPod classic for about 3 months now.  Its primary use is for my car.  It will freeze in the middle of me listening to a song, other times it will just reset will I'm the middle of a song.  Is this common? I was told at the genius bar that its because i have too much music on there {only about 10 gb free}, I thought that was the whole point of having a 160gb iPod.

You're correct, the point of a 160Gb iPod is to store a large Library. However, all hard drives tend to get slow or confused when almost full up (It appears to a be a quirk of computing - I usually fill my paper notebooks to the brim!) and 10Gb is not very much to work with. (I'm getting close to full on my Classic, only 13.5Gb remaining).
Perhaps you could give some thought to how to reduce the space being used. There are various methods.
Remove any junk
Remove any songs that you don't like (even if you don't count them as junk)
Remove any other media that is not to your taste, such as videos, audiobooks,  Podcasts and pictures. (Not album artwork, but the photos synced from your computer)
Consider whether you can reduce the Bit Rate used for your songs. If your main use is in the car, then storing songs in .wav format, or even in Bit Rates above 128Kbps may not be the best use of your iPod's space. You could mix and match, by having casual listening songs at 128Kbps and serious listening songs at 256Kbps if that suits you
Consider the use of Smart Playlists to automatically remove and add songs to your iPod at each Sync. See the paragraph below
A combination of the above
One example of the use of Smart Playlists is to create ones that remove a song (from the Playlist) once it has been played, and not put it back into the Playlist until a set time has passed, and then Sync selected Playlists, artists, albums etc. etc. So any song recently played could be removed from the iPod at a subsequent Sync and any songs then due back on the iPod would be put back at that Sync. Why waste space storing songs that you have heard recently but don't want to hear again for a while? It's even possible to leave selected recently played songs on the iPod for (example, two weeks) and then remove them from the iPod for - let's say, six months, while removing others straight away. Using this method, you let iTunes do the housework for you. You simply set the rules.
I have a master Smart Playlist that looks at five other Smart Playlists. Those Playlists in turn are filled from:
A Smart Playlist that has my favourite songs, provided they haven't been played for 165 days
Songs I've rated as 2 stars, provided they haven't been played for 14 months
Songs I've rated as 3 stars, provided they have't been played for 7 months
...and some other stuff.
I play it in shuffle songs mode, in my car, all the time and I never get bored by hearing the same thing too often.
One caveat... I would recommend frequent Syncs of the iPod with its iTunes, in order that iTunes can perform that ghastly housework stuff and keep your iPod clean and tidy, thus improving its performance.
Plenty of experienced users here will be able to help you create Smart Playlists if you haven't yet mastered them.
Food for thought, I hope.

why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

It's not a "fix," actually.  If that is a 4th gen iPod connected using USB, you need to do what it says and plug it in to the white square power adapter that originally came with those models.  Later Apple power adapters should work; third-party adapters may or may not work.  It has something to do with voltage.  The USB connection to computer does not provide the required voltage (although it's obviously fine for normal syncing and charging).
If that iPod is connected to a FireWire port, it apparently provides the required voltage, because that step does not come up during the Restore.  That model was a transition between iPod connecting to FireWire and connecting to USB.  Earlier models required FireWire.  Later models only used USB.
If you don't have an adapter, and there is an Apple Store nearby, I guess you could take it to the store's Genius Bar.  I'm sure they have a power adapter there, to complete the Restore.  (Just don't let them re-do the Restore on a Mac, if you use a Windows PC. Different storage formatting.)

  • IPod Classic freezes Itunes and wont Restore

    I have a IPod Classic 120GB.
I was saving a file onto my IPod because i also use it as a hard drive, and the file wouldn't save. Then i noticed that iTunes froze. So i tried saving again and nothing happened.
So i unplugged my IPod and had to go to the task manager to close iTunes.
Every time i plug my iPod into my computer, it freezes iTunes. I'v tried accessing files by going to the ipod and opening it from there and going to programs such as photoshop and opening it through there and all of them say that they cant open it, then they freeze as well. I have also tried uninstalling itunes and then reinstalling a earlier version but that didnt work, so i uninstalled it and reinstalled the latest version of itunes and that didnt work either.
I tried plugging my ipod into another computer and when i click on a normal jpg. image to open from my ipod, it says that the file isnt even there, but there is an icon showing it there.
Im asumeing all my files are corrupt, so i tried to reset my ipod more than once by pressing the select + menu button for 10 seconds, then when the apple appears, i pressed the select + play to get into disk mode. there is get a check mark and connect message, nothing else happens. I tried pluggin it into my computer when i get that screen on my ipod and nothing happens cept my itunes again freezes. So i cant seem to plug it into itunes so i can restore my ipod.
when i have my ipod plugged into my computer, and i start my computer, my computer goes to a black screen, and in white words says something about
    Volume Serial number 3141-5926
    Fat32
    check for consistancy,
and it does then says that all my files on the hard drive are unreadable and have been removed.
but when i look into my ipod after, their all still there. I tried deleting them by going into my computer, opening my ipod hard drive, but the moment i go to delete them, that too freezes.
I also recieve notifications from windows that it cant even connect to my Ipod.
also the hold switch, is not in the on position, its always been in the off position, and my iPod itself has never frozen.
    Im running Vista.
I dont care that i lose everything on my ipod, i just want to set it back to factory condition like when i first bought it. I just cant seem to do so.
    Help Please

He plugged it into his Mac and then it too froze his iTunes, then when he tried to access the hard drive his Mac crashed. He basically had the same problems as i did with it at home.
Eeek! Sounds like it was being "The iPod Of Doom".
Thank you so much for trying to helping me. I printed this all off and showed him and since he said we tried everything we could and it also wouldnt work for them either, we just replaced it.
Thanks very much for letting me know, Ty! (Always a relief to know I was on the right track with a troubleshoot.)
Glad you got a good resolution. Hope the new iPod behaves itself a bit better for you.

  • IPod Classic Freezes when fully 'loaded'

I am not able, to synch more than ~ 23,300 songs to any of my two 160 Gb iPod classics.
When synching more than 23,300 songs, my iPods are no longer able to play any songs. In the 'About' menu, the iPod shows the wrong number of songs (i.e. 17,300 instead of 24,000) and a huge amount of 'disk space used' is flagged as 'other' (in orange). When clicking on 'Album' or 'Songs', the iPod shows the message 'No songs found'.
When synching less than 23,300, I am able to resolve this issue by restarting the iPods after synching. However, even when synching less than 23,300 titles, the iPods show the wrong number of songs, right after synching, and the huge amount of 'disk space used' for 'other'. Therefore, I have to restart my iPods every time I synch them.
So I have talked to every level at Apple's iPod support, and to list all the things they made me do would exceed the size limit of this message board. They even made me send back my original iPod Classic, and I had to wait for almost 1 month to receive my replacement. Here is a summary of my problem, that they (Apple support) have not been able to solve :
I have a very extensive iTunes collection - over 200,000 songs. All of them were ripped, using iTunes.
I use the ID tags extensively - i.e. every field is used, and the comments are filled to the maximum allowed characters.
The same problem occurs when using my old Power Book G4 (OS X 10.4.10), and on my new 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.1).
I am using an external HD to hold my music files, which is directly connected to my USB2 port on either Laptop.
I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes and all the firmware and software is up-to-date.
I have rebuilt my iTunes Library from scratch several times.
I have no problem, playing any of the songs in iTunes.
Thank you very much for your help.!

    Perhaps?
I have the same problem, with my ipod (80gb classic) freezing quite alot), I did some research and the solution is to hold both the menu button and the middle button down together, untill the screen goes black and restarts with the apple logo. It should be fine after this. Spread the word, this was too hard to find out (it's frozen like 4 or 5 times now and I only just discovered this) - http://www.topix.com/forum/gadgets/ipod/TFCD7RF74RF71UUJ5

  • Ipod classic freezes when trying to sync photos

    Hi
My Ipod classic has started to freeze every time I try to sync with my PC when adding new photos.
This is something I have done many times before without any problems but as of yesterday, every time I try it just stops dead.
As I type this message, my ipod screen just says connected and the itunes screen says syncing ipod do not disconnect but it's been like this for 2 hours now with nothing to show for it.
Syncing of music and videos works fine I hasten to add.
Not sure if it's relevant but yesterday I updated itunes to 7.7.1.11
Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved
    Mark

Hello everyone. I'm new to Apple forums and don't know how to start a new thread! My problem is this: All my photos are on a Seagate External Hard Drive (there are about 3,500 of them) and I want to transfer them to my iPod. I've told iTunes where to find the photos on the EHD, but it just won't load them. I've got the Do not Disconnect message up, and have done for several hours - but no photos. I then tried loading a few hundred photos that I happened to have on the C drive, and that went fine and they loaded no problem. Why can't it load the ones on the EHD? I did it once before and it was fine, so I'm pretty certain I'm not being thick!
Any advice gratefully received. I don't really want to put all my pics back on the C drive as I haven't got that much room left - hence the need for the EHD!
    Thanks in advance...

  • Why is my ipod classic freezing and crashing/deleting my itunes??

When I connect my ipod Classic to my laptop the screen on the ipod says that is connected (Eject before disconnecting etc) however my itunes isn't showing my ipod as being connected and therefore I can't sync.
As a bonus, my itunes freezes as soon as my ipod is connected to the laptop and I can't disconnect my ipod or close itunes.  The first time this happened I had to shut my computer down to be able to disconnect and when I restarted it I was faced with a major system error! My computer told me that this was likely connected to a portible media device's installation software and Windows was thankfully able to run a self-diagnostic, solve the problem and restart after 2hours.
When i got restarted, itunes was gone from my system completely!!!  I reistalled the software from itunes website and thankfully my music library was still there I thought I was in the clear but when I connected my ipod once again I encountered the same problems all over again.
This has only happened since I updated itunes software 2 weeks ago after an alert from itunes.  I get these regularly and I always update and have never had any problems until now.  I am not even sure which version I updated to as I just clicked install without paying much attention to the version number.
Can anyone offer help or advice? I'm going on holiday this weekend and the thought of a 12 hour flight with no music is horrible.
    Thanks in advance.

Disconnect you iPod from the PC
Put your iPod into DiskMode, (refer to this Apple Support Article)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
Connect the iPod to PC, but close iTunes when it opens up, you need to do the iPod hardisk filesystem repair.
in my Computer or WinExplorer, right click the iPod->Properties->Tools
    Click on Error Check
Tick on both Autofix filesystem and Scan for bad sector.
    Click OK.
After finish the error check, disconnect and connect back the iPod (give a delay of 1 minute)
If iTunes launch, select the iPod and Restore.
The above should work if you don't have too many plugins installed that conflicts with iTunes, such as Antivirus, emails and skins that make the Vista to look like Windows 7 or Mac OS X.
    Good Luck!

  • Ipod classic freezing itunes

I have an iPod classic 80 gig that will turn on, and function normally, other than allow me to put music on because when I plug it in it says there are detected problems and asks me if I want to "scan and fix" the problem. When I try to "scan and fix" it says it cannot access the disk on the iPod. If I have iTunes running it will freeze it. I have tried reseting the iPod, starting in disk mode, and re-installing iTunes. None of this has worked. Please give me some insight?

Which Version of iTunes are you running?
What is your iPod software number as shown in the iTunes sumarry page? (1.1.2?)
Are you using Windows or Mac?

  • IPod Classic freezes while adding songs when only half-filled

I'm trying to be as detailed for best results.
I have an 80 GB iPod Classic. Running on 4 years since I purchased it. Treated well, not overplayed, charged frequently, etc.
Recently I've had problems when it comes to adding music, however. At a certain point when the harddrive is filled (somewhere close to 50%), it seems to not be able to add any more songs. For instance, I have somewhere around 6,000 songs in my iTunes library. After restoring and trying to copy over them all, the system hangs at just around 5,500 tracks. Then it is unable to sync. Then it is unable to eject. Then it is an annoyance.
After a very frustrating day of attempting to figure out the problem, I have concluded what is NOT the problem.
USB ports - I've used all of them, tested with other devices, have never had problems in the past
USB cable - switched between two different ones. I've been able to connect and edit titles/album art without any problem
iTunes - used a third party software to manage iPod and it had the same problem; I've also updated, reinstalled and downgraded to various versions as well
Corrupt song/file - While iTunes may hang on a certain song when bulk syncing, trying again doesn't affect it.
Diagnostics issue - used information found on these forums to check diagnostics levels and the numbers all look fine
Uploading too many songs at once - I've gone through and uploaded each album INDIVIDUALLY and had the same problem around the same track number. I've even uploaded about 5,000 songs, ejected, hooked up and tried to continue later in the day and it still will eventually freeze up.
That's about all I can think of. As of now my musical library just barely fits into this half-hearted iPod. I would really like to figure out if there's a fixable problem before I invest in more digital media.
Is there any reason why my iPod would just sort of give up when the harddrive is half-filled?

I was having the same problem.
I have an i pod classic 80GB (with the wheel) I think it's 5th generation
I would start a Sync, it would sync 2 or 3 songs then stop or hang up, which did not interfere with any other function, so I would not say it froze.
Once I ended the sync by clicking on the X next to the sync progress bar at the top of the window, I ejected the ipod and then plugged it in again.  Then  I selected my i pod under Devices in the menu on the left-hand side of iTunes.  Clicked on the summary tag.  Clicked on  "Manually manage music and videos" Clicked ok and apply.
When in manual mode, you cn drag songs from  iTunes to the device icon in the sidebar. Once I downloaded the song or songs or album that was causing the problem, I then unselected manual load, and everything else was able to sync normally on automatic mode.

  • IPod Classic freezing

    Hi,

  • Ipod classic freezes I tunes

I have a ipod classic, that when connected too Itunes it freezes and will not sync, Ispent two and a half hours with Apple technical yesterday with no success, I was amased to see how many other users have the same problem, surely Apple are aware?

    My thoughts
    Aware? - possibly.
Critical to business to fix? not likely, there are newer products generating billion$, better not to fix obsolete product, as existing Classic owners, will upgrade to newer product, when the classic give them these  problems and frustration.

  • IPod Classic Freezes Everything!

Ok so it seems there are alot of these questions on this website but none of them have helped me. So I have the 7th Gen iPod Classic 160GB and out of nowhere it just wouldnt sink all my songs (about 6500) and ever since then whenever its plugged into a computer it freezes the whole computer. Ive tried safe modes and disk mode and everything on these forums and nothing seems to work. I love my iPod and just want to be able to use it again.
Any info would be great thanks.

    Retracts: 14
    Reallocs: 64
    Pending Sectors: 16
    PowerOn Hours: 58
    Start/Stops: 3634
    Temp: Current 27c
    Temp: Min 13c
    Temp: Max 54c
    I really want help! cheers!

I also had this problem last week.  in the meantime,  I have upgraded Itunes in Maverick.  when i connected this am -  it took about 15 minutes for the connected iPod to show in itunes with message " ITunes cannot read the information on this IPod"   there was an "OK" button underneath the message.   select OK.   the iPod will show as empty onscreen and a prompt to reset to factory settings.   I reset to factory settings - ejected iPod - restarted computer - connected iPod - ITunes then treated my iPod as "new" - for setup.  now after sync - ALL IS FINE AGAIN...

  • 80 GB iPod Classic freezing with upgrade to iTunes 9.2

So, I finally got around to upgrading to iTunes 9.2 and when I plug my 80 GB iPod Classic into my computer (Windows Vista), iTunes freezes. My iPod says it is connected, but it doesn't show up in iTunes and when I plug it in to iTunes I can't listen to any music or do anything in iTunes.
Is there a way to rectify this problem?
    Thanks for reading.

Before you update your iPod, reboot it (hold down middle and top button until the apple logo shows up and then release the buttons) once the iPod menu screens come back then connect to iTunes.

  • Ipod classic freezing and mixing up songs

Ok i need help. When i play songs on my 160gb ipod classic its mixing them up for example of i was listening to a westlife song a one direction may play yet its coming up the westlife song name :/. Half my songs are not playing also i go to click on it and it wont play or it will play for 10 seconds and jump to a different song. And it freezes while syncing an5d sometimes when im listening to songs

Your iPod seems to have data corruption.  You should probably do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  Hopefully, all the songs on the iPod are in your iTunes library...
Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
After the Restore, set up automatic syncing to sync your iTunes music library to the iPod again, and it should be back to normal.
