IPod Classic Gen 3 Click Wheel 20-GB accidental disk format

I believe I accidentally formatted the disk on my iPod while attempting to format another drive connected to the computer (Win 7). Now I only get the Apple logo and nothing happens when I try and do a reset (menu/select). When I press the menu/play buttons, the display will cycle on and off after about 6 seconds. Any idea how I can recover this iPod or should I consider it a paper weight? Thank you very much!

The first thing I would attempt is to restore the iPod firmware through iTunes
(Summary Tab - Version Section - Restore). Both Mac and Windows versions can do it for you. But all your iPod contents will be lost (if you've formatted the iPod they're gone anyway).
And attention, choose the right format during restore, Mac format (HFS+ filesystem) is usable only on Mac Os, Windows format (FAT32 filesystem) is universal.
Once the firmware is restored, the iPod should behave as usual.
Good luck.

Have you recharge the battery for at least 2 hours, or just leave it connected for 4 hours?
(When you replaced the Hardisk, you should also replace the battery.)
Some other iPod SSD sites, says that you may have to format the CF in FAT32, as Mac dont read NTFS drive so if Windows is the 1st PC that your CF is connected, it may be formatted to NTFS.
You can try erasing the CF using Disk Utilty, so that Mac can recognise it. (but not Windows)

  • My "iPod Classic (60GB) Click Wheel" is not being recognised in iTunes although the iPod shows up in 'my computer'.

My iPod Classic (60GB) Clickwheel is not being recognised in iTunes although the iPod shows in 'My Computer'.  The problem started with an error message in iTunes saying "Could not complete sync as devise may have become corrupt" and suggested I restore the iPod to factory settings which I have done several times.  I've carried out an error check in the iPod properties.  I've completely removed iTunes and all related software components in the correct order and reinstalled version 10.5.3. I have been through the 5 R's numerous times but still the iPod is not being recognised in iTunes. I have Windows XP, I'm tearing my hair out now so any help or suggestions would be great

Try and force iPod into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPod
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

  • IPod 4th Gen Click Wheel replaced hard drive; problems

Ok, So I replaced the 20gb hard drive with a new EXACT replacement hard drive, no other problems with iPod. But iTunes will not recognize it because the hard drive is not formatted. I tried formating it with Disk Utility but keep getting error messages. Im not sure what format to use. When the 4th gen came out Intel processors werent here so Im sure I need to simply format as Mac OS Extended. There is no HFS= format in Disk Utility. Im lost as to what to do. Please help??!

    hmm - curiouser and curiouser
I've now managed to get it to manually update (after iTunes took 100% of system resources and I had to force quit it...) but that still doesn't really help me with the auto-sync feature which still won't work

  • Ipod feels a big laggy. 4g gen click wheel was quicker

when i press next on my new 5g ipod w/ video it takes up to 3 seconds to actualy start playing the next song [during these 3 seconds, the song continues to play] and then another second to show the name of the new song.
my 4g gen click wheel ipod didn't do this. it was very quick to display the name of the song it was about to play, and the HD spinup was usualy a lot quicker.
    would a restore fix this?

yeah, I admit it. so many users have complain about it. it's well known bug. so we can do nothing about it until Apple will release next ipod updater to fix this problem.
there are few symptons I have discovered so far.
    1. sometimes, I can't see album art when I play a song even I can find album art already in there.
    2. when I skip bunch of songs continually, sometimes ipod restart wihtout reason. and show Apple mark.
    3. when I plug off after updating from itunes, it delayed to show normal menu. it still shows 'do not disconnected' for several seconds to minutes (50 seconds to 2 minutes).
    4. like you said, reaction is not faster as much as 4G ipod (or ipod photo).

  • 4th gen click-wheel iPod not syncing

I have a 40GB 4th Gen click-wheel iPod that although works fine will not sync with my iTunes. I have done all normal troubleshooting items (5R's, restored factory settings, etc.). I am running it on an HP computer and have all software versions up-to-date. Specifically when I place the iPod into the docking station the connection begins, but then a loud whirring occurs and then the "Do Not Connect" message does not go away and I can't eject it. I have no warranty on the unit anymore and need to know if there is a fix or should I just take it to Apple store for troubleshooting.

Its a problem with iTunes 7. Many people are experiencing the same problems.
Here are just a couple examples:

  • Why won't iPod 4th Generation Click Wheel 40gb (non-photo)  charge?

I have an old but much-loved iPod 4th Generation Click Wheel 40gb (non-photo model) that I keep on a charging dock. Yesterday the screen went blank and it refuses to charge, so I assume the battery is dead.
Can anyone tell me if that's the reason?  If so, exactly what replacement battery I should get?  I've found replacement batteries listed for the iPod 4th Gen 40 GB photo and the 4th Gen 20 GB, but don't know if they'll fit.  Thanks so much for any information out there!

  • 40GB 4th Gen click-wheel making strange noise

An loud spin-related sound from the hard drive usually means it is failing.
My only suggestion is to put it into Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Then connect it and see if Windows sees it as a hard drive. If so, use Windows to reformat (erase) the iPod's hard drive. Do a full format, instead of a quick format. If the formatting fails, that is a sign that the hard drive is going bad. If it completes successfully, run iTunes again and use the Restore button on the iPod's pane.
Note: If it is still marginally working now as a player (but cannot sync), reformatting the iPod drive through Windows (if it fails the process) may cause it to become unusable as a player (because the drive will be erased and it will not sync).

  • I have an older Ipod with the clicker wheel. w

I have an older ipod with the clicker wheel.  Once I have imported a CD to iTunes, how do I get it to transfer to the iPod by Artist or Album instead of only each individual song?  When I import to my ipod and click on Artist or Album, it still shows the entire list of songs.  Thanks

A 15GB iPod would have to be a 3rd gen iPod.  It has a touch (not click) wheel with four touch buttons in a row that glow orange during use, correct?  That model needs to be connected using FireWire, because it cannot charge over USB.
If your new Mac has a Thunderbolt port, you can get an adapter for FireWire
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
plus an adapter for FireWire 800 to FireWire 400
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
Another way, if you have the square white FireWire power adapter that came with your iPod, is to get a special docking cable that Apple used to sell a long time ago.  It has both USB and FireWire connectors.  Here's a listing for a third-party version on eBay
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vanco-iPod-Dock-Connector-to-1-USB-1-FireWire-Cable-/2 71074766489?pt=US_MP3_Player_Chargers_Cradles&hash=item3f1d50ae99
(Search on "FireWire USB iPod docking cable" to see other listings.)
What you do with this thing is plug the USB connector to your Mac's USB port, the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter, and the dock connector to the iPod.  iPod can then sync over USB while getting power over FireWire.
I would go with that special cable, to avoid using a series of adapters (which adds complexity and unreliability) and tying up the valuable Thunderbolt port for just your iPod.

Tried connecting ipod classic (gen 4) to Panasonic flatscreen TV. I get only sound. Same with a friends ipod. Followed instructions using AV cables.

Anyone have a similar problem or know a solution?

Do you have a 4th gen iPod or an iPod Classic? They're not the same and the instructions will be different.

  • USB 2.0- Nano recognised as a iPod 20/40GB Click wheel model

Whenever I connect my iPod Nano into my ALi M5273 USB 2.0 PCI card, iTunes recognises my Nano as an old iPod (iPod 20/40GB Click Wheel model, with the black/white screen). The ipod icon under 'Sources' that appears on the left of iTunes appears as this model instead of a black ipod nano icon.
Sometimes the usb 2.0 card fails to connect altogether. Can anyone help me fix this problem? Or should i just buy a new USB 2.0 card?
    Specs:
    Windows XP Professional SP2
ALi M5273 USB 2.0 PCI Card
    iPod Nano

Strange... i've tried both versions. Version 4.9 that came on the disc and version 5.0. But both versions of itunes still seem to have the same problem- with USB 2.0.
Is it strange for my USB 2.0 card to have 4 USB controllers?: 1x'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller', and 4x'ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller'? All in all, it's added 4 USB Root Hubs, one with 6 usb ports, and 3 all with 2 usb ports each. Is that correct? (My ALi USB 2.0 card only has 5 usb ports but my pc has added 12).
P.s: There is another USB host controller which is not accounted for, as this is used to control the USB 1.1 ports on my motherboard. The controllers and USB Hubs listed have all been added by my ALi USB 2.0 PCI Card.

  • 5g iPod off-center click wheel

    Hi all.
Just got my 5g ipod. The click wheel has a small gap on the left side. It does not seem to affect its usability. I was curious to know if the same happened to others and did the apple store exchanged it for you?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I just got my new I pod the other day, 5G, White, 30g hard drive, the first thing I noticed was the gap. I am very ******** when it comes to that stuff. I drive my wife crazy every time I purchase electronic items. The gap is lower left about 6 and 7 o'clock position, I called the apple store and they gave me a case number, Also they sent me a empty box to send the I pod back and they said they will send me a brand new one. It took about 30 min for the entire process over the phone. This is the first apple product I ever bought. So if i get my replacement Ill be a happy customer. The tech support guy was friendly, but make sure you write your serial number down when you call, that was the difficult part reading it from the back. It is so small, and 5's looked like S's etc.. Hope this post helps with your question.

I have a 32 GB iPod classic, about 7 yrs. old. It is formatted to Mac, but I no longer have access to a Mac. Can I reformat it to PC (yuk!) without losing my music or screwng it up?

You need to transfer the music from your iPod on to your iTunes library on your PC, since that is where you are currently syncing and where you are signed into iTunes Match.  It doesn't matter that you were previously syncing it with a Mac, and you won't need to reinstall iTunes on your PC.  But you will have to use 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to transfer any music not purchased from the iTunes store from your iPod to your iTunes library.  Here's another guide on this, which is shoter and you may find easier to follow: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive.  Also, if you're using iTunes 11, go to View>Show Sidebar.  This will make it easier to follow along with these guides.

  • Does the iPod Classic 7th generation support movies in the HD format?

Does the iPod Classic 7th generation support movies in the HD format as well as SD or just SD?

No, the max resolution for video playback is generally 640x480, as stated in the specs
    http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html
The screen is actually half of that resolution, at 320x240.  HD at 720p is 1280x720.  HD at 1080p is 1920x1080
