IPod Classic Locked.

I just got a iPod Classic today, i let it charge for the recommended 4 hours, and when i unplugged it, a selection of languages came up, the top left hand corner said that the iPod was locked, but the manual switch at the top is off, and the click wheel doesn't work, any one else have this problem, or have the answer?

it sounds as if the slider that you use to make it lock got disengaged from the internal switch.
At least on the older ipods, when you open the case, the switch itself is located on the logic board, but the slider that you operate is a mechanism attached to the case. It is linked by a pin on the slider resting in a groove on the switch. It is possible for the slider to get bumped out of the groove.
Have you tried rocking the slider switch full motion both ways a couple times?
Otherwise, it is new, so I'd return it and get another.

What do I do when my iPod classic locks up?

    Reset the iPod.
To do this, turn the Hold switch on, then off again and press-and-hold both the Menu and the Select (centre) buttons together for at least ten seconds. You may need to try this a couple of times for it to work.
If it still doesn't fix it, try the 5Rs procedure, which is explained in the following article; http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/

  • 2nd iPod Classic locking up when connecting to MacBook Pro

I'll sum up the lead-in story as best I can.
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13". Just got an new iPod Classic a couple weeks back. I discovered that when playing the iQuiz game, I had a few lock-ups (freezing). Then a handful of times, it locked up when connecting it to the MacBook for charging or syncing. It didn't lock up EVERY time. But about 1 out of every 4 syncs on average.
I naturally thought something was wrong with the Classic, and brought it into the Apple store when it was locked up, and they gave me a new one.
But now this one is doing the same thing. Occasional lock-ups when connecting to the MacBook Pro. Doesn't matter which USB port. And doesn't seem to matter if the computer has been on, or if it's a fresh boot.
What could be going on here? I doubt highly that both Classics I've gotten have the same exact issue with occasional lock-ups when connected to the computer. My MBP otherwise has given me no problems. And no problems with other USB devices, ever.
    Any ideas?

Update: bought a new usb sync cable to try, and no change. the Classic locked up the first try with the new cable.

  • IPod Classic "locked" - tried everything

I have an iPod Classic 120 GB - out of nowhere - there is the "lock" symbol on the screen and it won't unlock. The Hold button is in the off position. I tried pushing it on and off but the lock stays on. The touch pad wouldn't respond to the touch and I eventually chose "Reset" on iTunes and went through the whole process. It wiped the iPod, reloaded all my files, but the Lock was still on and won't respond. I tried holding Menu and Select and this time it reset, but the lock is still on and I can't even choose "English" for the language. When it powers down (battery save) it's as good as dead. I can only wake it up by plugging it into my computer but it still won't let me select anything.
I never put the lock on in the first place so I have no idea what to do about it and there's no option to unlock from iTunes.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!

This happened to me I have Ipod classic 30g- older generation, not sure which.
The locked symbol came on for no reason. The wheel wouldn't function, the clock froze, couldn't play music, wouldn't come up as an icon on the computer, or in itunes. I let the battery go down overnight-I really had no choice- since the Ipod would not respond to anything I did, I couldn't turn it off. The next morning, I saw that the lock had disappeared. It was low on juice but once attached to the computer, the icon came up in Itunes like normal and it began to recharge. These things are very finicky.

  • IPod Classic locks iTunes

When i connect my iPod Classic 160GB to iTunes, i iPod locks and i have to reset it inside the docking station. Then all works perfectly. Itunes and the Classic are the newest versions and firmware.

Still noone with an idea about it?

  • IPod Classic Lock button flashes on and off

My iPod Classic 160 GB lock indicator shows up or flashes when i turn off the lock on the top of the iPod.

    Hello,
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • My ipod classic locks my pc

First my ipod classic 120gb on itunes had an error in the capacity I was saying N / D, I changed the drive letter to "O:" and now locks the pc and not let me do anything. What can I do? if now I can't change it again?

    Shutdown your PC.
    Disconnect the iPod
    Restart the PC
    Launch iTunes Manually
See if iTunes can play songs normally, or else re-install iTunes.
    If iTunes is ok.
Close back iTunes, if it is open.
Connect your iPod to a USB 2.0 port at the front of your PC, do not use any USB hub and disconnect all other USB devices.
    Restore iPod software.

  • IPod Classic Locks Up, Can Only Reset To Disk Mode, Then Have To Restore

Apple -- You have to fix the iPod Classics! I love my 160 GB -- when it works! I'm on my 4th one now since Christmas. Here's what happens... I have 125 GB of songs. Every time I load them all, it locks up, and I have to restore. It does not matter what order I load them in. I currently sync playlists manually. I've talked to the genius bar and Apple support and have basically determined that there are at least 2 problems. First, there's a problem with displaying album artwork. Second, there's a problem with some song files. All songs play fine in iTunes. My suggestion is that you either (a) fix the iPod Classic so it doesn't blow up or (b) give us some diagnostics to help find bad files or artwork. I end up reloading my entire iPod every few weeks after I've VERY methodically loaded it a little at a time. Please help! I want to love my iPod like everyone else!

  • My ipod classic locks up itunes and displays "no music" help!

this all happened after i upgraded to the newest version of itunes.
so far, ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and resetting the ipod, but no go.
i know i cant be the only one hanging onto a 2008 ipod classic 80gb.
can anyone offer some words of advice?

    Hey mryanrichey,
If I understand your question correctly, it sounds like iTunes is not showing any content after updating. I believe your symptoms may be related to those outlined in the following resource:
No content shows up in iTunes after updating

If the proposed solution does not resolve your issue, you may want to refer to the following article:

  • My 120GB iPod Classic locks up my computer...help?

So for a while i haven't used my iPod because there has been issues that have gotten me VERY angry and so i used the Zune instead. I still prefer to use the iPod but, i dont have a choice.
The problem that is happening is when i plug the ipod cord into all ports on my PC to see if it could just be lack of power, iTunes locks up and then becomes unresponsive.
I would like to give you all more information but i can't get by that part.

Um... I can honestly say that the update did not do this to my Classic 120.
In fact, the post you link to was posted 4 days before the update was released, so I am not sure why you link that issue with the update. Particularly since even the posts made after the update was released don't say anything about the update having anything to do with it.
I don't know of any issues with the latest update to my iPod. I don't think you need to obsess too much about it. However, if your iPod is working fine and your happy - I don't see a reason to update either. On the other hand, if you run into any odd behavior the first thing I would do is to install the latest update.

  • Ipod classic locked up

my ipod will not charge and when it does it freezes or locks up

Colin, you got to select Manual test
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots and you see the Apple Logo
Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds.
    Press MENU for Manual Test,
then select IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData to reveal your stats
You have done ok as you got till step 3, plz dont give up, try again.

  • Obvious defect in iPod Classic

Judging by the number of users on this forum alone who are experiencing severe iPod problems that basically make the unit useless, I'd say Apple has a serious problem with iTunes-iPod Classic. If I can't use iTunes to get music on my iPod then the iPod is a worthless lump of metal. Thus far no one can offer a solution. As much as I hate to consider it, I'm going to start looking at Zune and other players that don't have the baggage that iPod Classic has.

I understand WoodenBats frustration. I have also had numerous problems with my iPod classic locking out all my music, and apple has done nothing for me. I have had this problem since the first time I put over 30 gig of music on it. I sent my iPod in to be serviced and they returned saying nothing was wrong. Next time I had the same problem that apple says is not there, I called the phone support. They said that indeed my hard drive was failing and that I just needed to send it in again and they would fix it. The person from the phone support wrote up the problems I was having and specifically noted it as a failing hard drive. Again I sent in my iPod to have the experts tell me nothing is wrong with it. Yet I still can't put over 25 gigs of music(the problem has gotten worse) without losing access to my music and having to start over again. As for making an appointment to the "Genius" bar, the nearest apple store is over an hour away. I don't have time to drive that far or to keep trying to get this waste of money to work. I am out of patience waiting for apple to fulfill their warranty.

  • So, I installed itunes on windows xp, but system locks up when I try to sync ipod classic

I recently installed Itunes on a computer with windows xp. At first it recognized my Iphone 4s and Ipod classic 160 g. Went through the standard procedure for registering both products and everything seemed fine. Then I started importing my cd collection with the intention of syncing them to my ipod classic.
I should mention that my previous computer crashed with my original Itunes account(that went with my ipod classic). I didn't know how to recover it so I just started over. When I tried to sync it with my cd collection everything locked up. Itunes and my computer froze up to the point where i had to do a "hard shut off". Although, it still accepts my iphone with no problem. How do I sync both on the same itunes account?

The problem is likely iTunes 10.5, which has loads of sync problems with the iPod Classic. If you look on this forum, you'll see lots of users like you with similar problems. Normally, I'd advise you to read this summary post of mine and consider downgrading to 10.4. But you want to sync both an iPhone and your classic, and you need 10.5.x if you want to use the iCloud features. So I'm not sure what to advise, other than to use the correct USB ports and possibly to disable realtime virus scanning during your sync efforts.

  • IPod Classic won't Restore and FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES! Help.

    Hi. First, the specifics:
I have an iPOD Classic (120GB).
    I have Windows Vista R2 (64-bit).
I have the latest version of iTunes, yes, for 64-bit.
With that out of the way, I started seeing issues with my iPod not being able to play certain songs. I'd find the song, hit the play arrow, nothing would happen. The time would not move, song would not play. Here's what I've tried to do initially:
    Re-install iTunes, re-sync.
Still wouldn't play these songs.. Not all, but many songs.
    So, I tried to Restore.
Initially, it looked like it was restoring properly - - but took way longer than usual. Like 2 hours. At the end, I got an error "Could not sync this song, Could not sync iPod."
I looked at iPod, had to set it up, choose ENGLISH as language, etc.  Search iPod, found NO MUSIC, NO VIDEOS, etc.
    Tried simply re-syncing, wouldn't work.
So, I disconnected, restarted my computer and tried to RESTORE again.
I connect it via a USB 2.0 and the iPod cable. I have been doing this for years and years and this iPod has worked for the 3 years I have had it.
I have had iPod since their inception, so I'm not a rookie. I also have an iPhone and an iPad2.
So I connect the iPod as usual. NOW, it basically FREEZES iTunes. I CONTL-ALT-DEL and find it's always iTunes (NOT RESPONDING).
This happens EVERY TIME... I tried restarting several times, same issue.
So, I unistalled all components of iTunes > RESTART COMPUTER.
I re-download the latest version of iTunes, yes the correct one.
I tried syncing or restoring. DOESN'T RECOGNIZE iPOD, FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES.
HERE'S OTHER THINGS I have tried:
RESTORING from DISK MODE. (DID NOT WORK, LOCKS iTUNES)
I downloaded the Windows Update for Vista that helps not corrupt iPod when disconnecting too early.
Downloaded update, did NOT help with the issue.
Un-installed iTunes again. Restarted computer. Re-installed newest version of iTunes.
ONE THING TO POINT OUT, when I connect my iPod, iTunes launches if not open and I get a WINDOWS box that says:
    MICROSOFT WINDOWS:
Do You Want To Scan And Fix Errors on Steven's iPod (L:) ??
I tried both options: YES, Try to Fix, NO - Continue
That doesn't work, and iTunes still freezes regardless of option.
Again, tried DISK MODE, tried Regular mode...
    Nothing works...
    PLEASE HELP...

Guys, if you all having the same problem as Steven, then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.
Main cause is the iPod Hardisk is dying, but if the DD report are good, then it is the USB connection timeout.
So have a go at the Disk Diagnostic first.

Copy all the contents currently on your iPod Classic to your new iTunes library and then choose the Erase and Sync option. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
