IPod Classic Locks Up, Can Only Reset To Disk Mode, Then Have To Restore

Apple -- You have to fix the iPod Classics! I love my 160 GB -- when it works! I'm on my 4th one now since Christmas. Here's what happens... I have 125 GB of songs. Every time I load them all, it locks up, and I have to restore. It does not matter what order I load them in. I currently sync playlists manually. I've talked to the genius bar and Apple support and have basically determined that there are at least 2 problems. First, there's a problem with displaying album artwork. Second, there's a problem with some song files. All songs play fine in iTunes. My suggestion is that you either (a) fix the iPod Classic so it doesn't blow up or (b) give us some diagnostics to help find bad files or artwork. I end up reloading my entire iPod every few weeks after I've VERY methodically loaded it a little at a time. Please help! I want to love my iPod like everyone else!

Ipod classic wont start up or reset after sleeping mode

Hi. I've just got a new iPod Classic 160Gb, one week old. Everything is fine except that it won't turn on after sleep mode is on. I cant do the restart. The iPod somehow does not response to the menu+start buttons at the same time. It however wakes to live when I plug it to the computer. But when not in use and after it enters sleeping mode I still cannot turn it on. The only option again is to plug it to the computer. This is not right...?? It has the latest software and I have reset to original setup through iTunes.
Anyone know how I could solve this problem? Could this be a hardware fault?

Hi, did you ever find a fix for this? My iPod Classic has just done the exact same thing - red X, won't be detected on Windows, and won't go into disk mode (will go into Config mode, but I can't see anything in that mode that will help).
Would really like to be able to put this into disk mode so I can try to restore my files...

I've been having trouble with my 160gb iPod classic the last few days, after deciding to sync it for the first time in 5 years. It keeps coming up with different error problems half way through syncing or causing my iTunes to freeze and eventually I have to restore the iPod. Restored it about 5 times in the last 2 days. However, this time an error message came up saying it couldnt be restored due to an unknown error. I had it in disk mode at the time so rebooted it but it froze on the apple logo. I thought I would try putting it in diognostic mode for the first time to see if that could give me any clues as to what was wrong. However it doesn't seem to want to go into diognostic mode and is now refusing to go into disk mode too.
After sitting on the apple logo for a while it came up with a picture of the iPod end of the usb wire, saing 'Connect to itunes to restore'. So I've plugged it into my laptop (Windows Vista) but it isn's showing up in iTunes...just making my iTunes freeze.
Anyone got any ideas? Unfortunately I haven't got the money to buy a new iPod so I really need this one to be fixed. Unfortunately technology seems to hate me (My laptop stopped working so having to use my mums...my external harddrive giving up ghost after only a couple of years for no reason what so ever, my iPhone not working properly etc etc etc)
I miss the days when you could just plug in an MP3 player and copy the files onto it like you do a memory card *sigh*

Charge it up fully. Toggle the hold switch. Try getting into diagnostics mode again. See Corrupt iPod classic.

IPod Classic won't sync or go into Disk Mode.

My iPod suddenly decided to now work, and displays a red cross (X) on the screen. I looked up what to do, and apple.com told me to set to disk mode. I spent a few minutes reading it and looking up tutorial videos on how to do it, and mine will not cooperate. I hold down the Menu and Center button until the screen goes black, then I'm supposed to hold down the center/Play button after the screen fades, but the screen doesn't fade for that long and goes back to the cross. I'm just trying to get it to read in my Windows XP so I can restore it.

Is it okay to eject my ipod classic 5th gen when it's in disk mode when it hasn't connected to itunes and windows won't recognize it?

I use windows eight um the Itunes version i have is the most recent is the most recent. So what happened is that I had the sad Ipod thing displaying but after it dying and letting charge it worked fine but wouldnt connect to computer or Itunes. ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

The reason i asked this question is because i have been wondering this a lot ever since i got an exchange on this ipod (and ive only had it for a few weeks now) because my last ipod had a lot of problems. so after i restored my ipod with my computer/itunes, i downloaded apps that i wanted, and then when i went to the storage to see how much storage was left, it said 0 bytes. i was freaking out because i didnt know how that could be, i mean, cause like, that is impossible when i just 'purchased' it, that the space was full but i looked and all my pictures were on this ipod and i already put them on my computer so i dont need them anymore thats why i wanna reset it now so there is nothing on it so i can have more space for stuff to do and download on it.
it is updated to iOS 8 but that happened when i purchased it, so i didnt have a choice to update it even though i didnt want to update to iOS 8...

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

If your media is in iTunes restore the iPod, but the iPod is/was the only location currently hosting some of your media then the first task is to try to extract it. See the user tip Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for some recovery tools. Most third party tools will probably require the device to have a functioning library however the techniques outlined in the iLounge Article referenced at the end should work as long as the device still shows up in Windows Explorer or Finder.
