IPod Classic mounts on Desktop but not in iTunes

I have tried everything I can find on these discussion boards and Apple support documents but to no avail. Finally I put the iPod into firmware update mode and did a complete restore. That did the trick. Now I come to sync it in iTunes again and the same problem is back. I cannot be resetting the iPod every time, plus I am losing my iPod play counts. What gives? I am using the latest version of iTunes 12, Yosemite, MacBook Pro.

OK not a helpfully put question, I know. I solved the issue (I hope!!) by deleting all the contents of my iTunes>Music folder except for the Media (having first copied it all to the desktop). I relaunched iTunes and iPod was recognised. Then put the current library file back and everything is fine - for now anyway.

  • Ipod nano mounts on desktop but not in itunes

A brand new ipod nano 4gb, ordered from the online Apple store & a christmas present to my wife, mounts on her powerbook G4 osx 10.3.9, but not in itunes 6.0.1. The latest ipod updater 05-11-17 is installed. I have restored the nano, removed iPodDriver.kext and downloaded and re-installed 10.3.9. Everything seems to work on my G5 which I used to restore the nano using ipod updater 05-11-17.
What can I try next short of contacting Apple for a new ipod nano?
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 15" silver powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB DDR SDRAM

OK, I restarted the powerbook with the ipod plugged into the computer. Previously I had been plugging the iPod into an active computer. And lo and behold it is now recognized by iTunes. I'm not marking the Question as answered, because it may not work next time.

  • 3G iPod Shows up on Desktop but not in iTunes

I am having the same problem with my 3G iPod. It has been working flawlessly for many years but I tried to mount it and update my songs and it will show up on the desktop but not in iTunes. It does show up in the system profiler. I reset the iPod via the updater and keypresses. I trashed the plist files for the iPod and iTunes. Still nothing. I switched my firewire cables to different ports. Nothing.
What was strange was that Yami-pod does not see it as an iPod either so it is not just iTunes.
My iPod shuffle works just fine and mounts right away in iTunes.
This is on my eMac where I store my music. I have not tested it yet with the Macbook.

I tried hooking the iPod to the MacBook and it worked like a charm. I then moved the iPod back to the eMac and I still had the same problem. At my whits end I decided to zap the PRAM with the Command-Option-P-R trick and to my surprise the iPod launched iTunes and started syncing when I restarted the eMac.
I had no reason to think that there could be a problem with the PRAM as I did not have any other problems but it does seem to have been the problem.

  • IPod Nano shows on desktop, but not in iTunes

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. I unmounted it and connected it again. each time I do that, it tells me it's detected a software update, but when I check, the dialog box tells me it's current.
    any help, please?

  • IPods mount on desktop but not in iTunes

We have two iPod Nanos (5G and a 3G) and while they both appear on my Mac desktop - neither appear in iTunes 10.0.1
I've plugged in using front and back USBs, trashed the kext file, re-installed the whole app then checked for firmware updates (which were all current). So does anyone have other ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Richard.

Well I've erased the device as described above and it still won't mount.
I actually went to the Apple Store as well and all they could suggest was the trashing of the applemobiledevice.kext and also support package which I'd already done.
Strangely though, before reinstalling iTunes 10 all over again, iTunes 4 started up and I noticed that the device mounted but when v10 was properly installed, it didn't so clearly this is a v10 issue.

  • 5th Generation Nano Mounts on Desktop But Not in iTunes on MBP.

My iPod mounts fine on my Mac Mini but not MBP. It only mounts on Desktop. I have done the 5 - point checklist suggested by Apple but to no avail.

Since you know it is working on your Mini, focus on the MacBook Pro. I would suggest a reinstall of iTunes to start. Make sure you are running the latest updates for whatever OS you are running as well.

Certain models of single processor Power Macintosh G5 computers may show iPod nano mounted in the Finder but not recognized in iTunes. If this happens to you, try restarting your computer and Setting Energy Saver to highest performance and turn off hard disk sleep. If you have an iPod nano, but don't have a G5, then follow the other steps below.
The other steps all seem to deal with earlier versions of OS X. You are using 10.5? (your system info changed from your first post to your last post, dropping the 10.5 info).

  • IPod mounts on desktop but not in iTunes

The problem started with a system extension error message (below). From an old posting elsewhere it is suggested that an errant DiskWarrior icons file gets inserted in the IOStorageFamily.ktext file, causing mount problems with USB devices. It happens I had tried running an outdated version of DiskWarrior earlier today. In any event I followed the posting's advice to "show Package Contents" so as to delete the Preview.icns file. Did that but didn't fix the problem.
I've repaired permissions and have reset my 4th gen. Nano. Am using iTunes 10.1.2 Here's the error message:
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.ktext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
If only I knew how (or who). Help please!

Aha. Solved the problem myself by reinstalling iTunes. I needed only to pay more heed to the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant suggested.

  • Ipod shuffle appearing on desktop but not in itunes?

  • IPod Classic 80GB shows on desktop but not in iTunes, so will not sync

My work Mac has just been upgraded to 10.5.8, and with it iTunes to 10.1. Now, when I connect my iPod, it appears on the desktop but not in the iTunes panel. As such, it won't sync any new content.
There is no problem with the cable, as the iPod charges while connected. I've tried resetting the iPod about a dozen times, which has no effect (once in a while the iPod says it is synchronizing, but this only lasts a few seconds and then disappears). Is there anything else I should try before I take the big step of formatting the iPod? I'm reluctant to do this because at the moment I at least have an iPod full of music - if I format and it still won't sync, I'll have a useless empty black box! Is it possible to go back to the previous version of iTunes which was syncing fine?

  • IPod appears on desktop but not in iTunes

When I connect my iPod clickwheel (via Firewire or USB) to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7) it mounts on the desktop and I can open it as a disk volume; but iTunes (8.2) doesn't see it at all. iTunes does see my iPhone. Restarting makes no difference. Disconnecting and reconnecting also makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

    Hey there,
Have you had a chance to look at this Apple support document relating to this issue? If not, check it out. Hope it helps.

  • Pod classic 160 appears on desktop but not in iTunes

My new iPod Classic 160 appears on my desktop but not in iTunes. I have the latest version of iTunes installed (and reinstalled (twice)). When I first launch iTunes I get the warning that my iPod is using (old) usb 1 port to connect to my G4 (my beloved G4). This is correct, it is, I can live with slow sync. Anyway, I want to restore my iPod but iTunes freezes (crashes) after giving me his error message:
'The iPod "Mark Carter's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-1302).'
Then I have to force quit iTunes, etc.
Also, I was listening t music on iPod but then it just seemed to disappear? Can still see albums/songs/artwork etc. but won't play track just skips through them.

  • My ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes 7.

Let me start out by saying I've never had any itunes + ipod probems before. Everything has run smoothly up until now.
Last week I upgraded my OS to 10.4.7 because I had been running on 10.2.8 since 2001 and itunes wouldn't let me download albums containing music videos. So I decided it was time for the upgrade. I also upgraded to itunes 7 and had been previously using itunes 6. This is when the problems started. Now whenever I plug my ipod into my computer with my firewire cord, my ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes and I am completely clueless on what to do. No error messages pop up or anything. My ipod charges and that's about it. I tried doing the 5 R's, but none of that helps. I have a feeling it's itunes's problem and not my ipod's. I was thinking that maybe if I uninstall itunes 7 and re-install 6, everyting would work again; but I don't know how to uninstall itunes and I don't want to risk losing my library. I'd just like for itunes 7 to recognise my ipod and update it. Can anyone help me?

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.
