IPod Classic: Need auto aux cable recommendation

My apologies as I realize this issue has been brought up on support boards in the past.  I could not however find a recent discussion on the topic.
I have only recently been provided with the opportunity to plug my iPod Classic directly into my car stereo, via auxillary or USB.  I immediately noticed that one cannot access the menu of the iPod once it's been plugged into either of these outlets, forcing one to rely on the car's audio menu, which is cumbersome to say the least.  In the past I used a device that connected via the 12V cigarette lighter, which still allowed for iPod menu accessibility during iPod functioning.
Is there a USB or auxillary cable available on the market today that will (1) charge the iPod and (2) maintain iPod menu accessibility?
Thank you for your recommendations!

Hello Brutl6,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPod classic.  You have gone through some really good steps to isolate the issue. I recommend continuing with the steps in the following article to further isolate and troubleshoot the issue of no audio when connected to headphone or speakers:

  • How do i use ipod in car with aux cable

Im trying to use my ipod touch 4 in the car with an aux cable and its not working, any suggestions?

Doesthe car's AUX input work  with oter devices?
Do headphones work on the iPod?
If headphones work then if the car's plug is fully inserted into the iPod, that is all you have to do with the iPod.

  • Ipod Classic A/V Component Cable problem

    Hi guys,
I'm having trouble with my brand new, latest generation, Ipod Classic 160GB with tv out A/V component cable.
When I plug it on my tv I get a vertical split image with some color distortion. Sound is ok, though.
Funny part is that I also own a 2nd generation ipod touch and the cable work fine with it.
Please help me out! I've searched the entire internet and couldn't find nothing regarding this problem yet

This is probably a long shot but:
Are you getting both channels of sound? I know this sounds ludicrous, but a friend of mine had a third-party cable and it seems the colour coded sleeves - red, white and yellow - on the AV plugs were mixed up so that video was coming through one of the audio plugs. The upshot was that he got one channel of audio and video sash until he tried different combinations of plugging the cables into the ports.

i just got new new Mac pro. I hooked up my nook and my Ipod classic to it. But the library system doesn't recognize the Mac yet and I need to use my old laptop. How do i change these back?

If you do it correctly you will not lose anything. See this tip: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • Ipod Classic 3G (40gb) - lost cables, charge universal dock?

I have a 40gb Ipod classic that I lost the cables for during a move, was wondering if the universal dock will charge it, or just allow it to play music.
In other words, will this (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MB125G/C) charge this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:3Gipod_indock.jpg).
I know this ipod only charges with firewire, which is why I am wondering. If not, whats the next best option?

It only charges via Firewire? Does it not charge when you connect it to your computer to sync with iTunes using a standard dock connector cable?
If you really have a third generation iPod, according to the Dock's specs oulined in the link you provided above, it should work. If you aren't sure what generation iPod yours is, see either of these two links to help figure it out.

  • MY IPOD CLASSIC NEEDS HELP!

    Hi,
My ipod classic 160GB has a problem. A serious one. It was fine until I tried plugging it into the laptop via usb. Windows suggested I reformat it, but i cancelled that. Upon ejecting my ipod to try reconnecting it to the laptop again, the ipod launched into a reset screen infinite loop where it keeps resetting over and over again. Now I tried reformatting it by entering disk mode and then connecting it into the computer. However, windows was unable to reformat the ipod as it could not access the disk drive. When I open 'computer' on my laptop, the ipod is detected as a removable disk. However when i attempt to open it, windows tells me "Please insert disk into removable disk." I have no idea how to solve this problem. Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • New iPod Classic needs Vista, I have got Windows 2000. Any way round this?

I have just run over my iPod photo 60 GB with the lawn tractor and reduced it to tiny fragments!
Having purchased a replacement, in the form of a Classic 120 GB, I now find that it requires a later version of iTunes - which also requires a later version of Windows than the Windows 2000 Professional I currently have. I appreciate Windows 2000 is "old hat" but I know that all my other programs run OK with it and may well not run with a later operating system.
I have over 10,000 songs within my iTunes library which I am scared of losing.
Is there a way round this conundrum?

You won't be able to use this to do any future updates/restores on your iPod.

  • Why the iPod classic needs to be updated

    Two things:
    - iTunes U content, should have its own menu section in the device. Why put all that stuff into a single Movies category.
    - Front Row or similar application is needed. Why is it sold a Universal Dock with a Remote, while there is no way of actually controlling the device, and using it effectively through a tv or monitor.
    Regards,

I've only recently downloaded anything from iTunesU and was optimistically hoping something sensible would happen when I synced the tracks to the iPod. Sadly not. While I quite agree that Apple could & should update the iPod with a dedicated section for iTunesU it is possible with iTunes 9 to switch the Media Kind to Podcast which at least gives more organisation to any iTunesU content. As far as I can tell you need to remove & resync the tracks for the switch to take place on the iPod.

  • IPOD classic 160GB/120GB USB cable pin allocation

I bought a 160GB ipod (exhibt so it was already used for some months)
I was able to use it for 2 days but it never charged during this time, until it remained forever in "charging, please wait"
I got a new 160GB for warranty, but they forgot to give me my usb cable back, so I lent one from my neighbour (120 GB Ipod).
The 160 GB ipod is charging fine with the 120 GB cable.
Now I'm looking at the pins of the two cables, one has 5 pins and the other has 6 pins and only 4 pin allocations are the same.
Also one cable has "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China" the other has nothing on it
Now I'm hesitant to try the old cable I got back from the store today.
Is it an original one, will it cause some bad things to happen to my ipod?
Does anybody know the pin allocations of the ipod or cable?

    Ah it's called "dock connector"
    wiki has a page : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_connector
    One cable has
    16 GND USB GND
21 Serial enable Connects to ground via a 1 MΩ, 1 % resistor in Belkin Amp/Charger. When this pin is grounded it appears to close a switch making the iPod shut off in case of a power loss. Dock has the same resistor. Some sources suggest connecting this pin to pin 11 through a 500 kΩ resistor to enable serial communications.
    23 5 VDC USB Power 5 VDC
    25 Data USB Data
    27 Data USB Data
    The other has:
    1 GND Ground
    15 GND Ground
    16 GND USB GND
    23 5 VDC USB Power 5 VDC
    25 Data USB Data
    27 Data USB Data
I wish I knew what it meant, maybe it's nothing....

  • IPod Classic Formatted Itself & Now Won't Sync

Help! Plugged my iPod classic in using normal cable & USB port, iTunes picked it up fine. I transferred some new stuff over on to it, then i noticed the device wasn't showing the 'conncected' screen like it normally does whilst plugged in, so i pressed the middle button, it then disconnected itself and reset showing the Apple logo but when it had loaded up, everything has been wiped off! Absolutely nothing left, all music, videos etc gone. When opened in My Computer, it's recognised as a device and is showing up empty. I've transfered my music back on to the device, but it keeps saying that the iPod cannot be synced because a duplicate file name was specified.
Can anyone help? I couldn't eject it from iTunes, but i unplugged it and all the data i've transfered over is there, but the friggin' thing won't sync! Please help!

    Hello ChewyEllis,
I would be frustrated as well if my iPod was not syncing.  I found a resource that I think would help in a situation like this.
I recommend following the steps in this troubleshooting assistant:

  • Ipod classic wont work with Itunes

This is my first ipod purchase and I am not pleased, its 2 days old and still isn't working. I did exactly how the instructions set out how to set it up. I plugged the ipod in, it charged for a few minutes, and a menu popped up on the screen for my language, I selected it and then it went to the connected screen, and continued to charge, I loaded itunes, nothing appeared, so I decided to let it charge to full, after it had been fully charged, still nothing, I have done everything apple have suggested, reset ipod, unistalled itunes, reinstalled, turned off the ipod service and turned it back on again, used a different USB port, itunes just will not find my ipod, therefore I cannot set it up to add files to it. I am extremely disheartened by how incredibley difficult this has been as this is my first apple product

When connecting to your Mac, make sure it is a high power USB2.0 port on the CPU body, do not use the USN port on the keyboard or any USB Hub.
If you are connecting to a MacBook Pro, only one USB port can provide enough resource for the high Drain device like the iPod. The other USB port is shared internally with other IO devices.
Given the huge  amount of iPod Classic sync issues, I would recommend, that you dont use any USB port with other devices, when you are syncing or Restoring any iPod Classic.
    So with the above info
Reset you iPod while connected to the High power USB port.
When iTunes comes up and prompt you to Restore, please do so (this will fix any hardisk filesystem corruption)
    Good Luck!

  • Do you have trouble with iPod Classic and Ford's SYNC?

Anyone have trouble with Ford SYNC recognizing iPod Classic? When I first bought my Lincoln my iPod Classic worked perfectly--just like it should with Ford SYNC. But a few months ago, when I plug in the iPod using a USB cable I get the message on Ford Sync that says, "incompatible device". At first I thought it was a ford problem so I began testing using a 2010 Buick and a 2010 Lincoln Navigator. My iPod classic doesn't work in either. However, a iPod nano works perfectly in either car. Also if I put some of my music on a flash drive it works fine in the Lincoln. So, I'm convinced that the problem is some type of update that occurred to my iPod or to iTunes.
I have tried several iPod Classics and several USB cables so it is definitely aiPod Classic software problem. By the way, my iPod Classics work fine by themselves--just not through Ford's SYNC.
I'm pretty lost as to possible solutions.
    Thanks,

I have done some experimenting and testing with my old Classic iPod that uses operating system 3.1.1. I don't think this operating system has changed. However, later generation iPods such as nano, shuffle that use a different operating system seem to work absolutely perfectly in my 2010 Lincoln Navigator, especially the ones without a hard drive (i.e. flash drive). My conclusion is that the Ford SYNC updates have somehow not been backward compatible with the older operating system. I know this can be attributed to Apple for part of the problem but I suspect that Ford somehow did not do enough testing with the older iPod operating systems. Turns out there are probably 7 or more operating systems on iPods and while you would assume that "backward compatibility" is a no-brainer, that seems not to be the case with second party vendors such as Ford SYNC. Personally, I have given up trying to solve this problem and have gone to flash drive and a "line in" option. My old Classic iPod works exceptionally well, plus I have a spare so I can probably use these thing till "H freezes over". Being a older retired American these things may actually last a life time!
