Ipod Classic + New Universal Dock--Browsing Albums on TV?

I'm a little confused as to whether the new Universal Dock, when connected to a TV, displays all of the menus from the iPod classic and lets you browse its contents etc., as well as how much information is displayed on the TV during playback. The description on the store page is pretty vague, and I have no reason to buy the dock if it only lets you play back video stored on the iPod and doesn't serve as a front end for music.

Yep, useless, and frustrating. Once in cover flow, I can use my Apple remote (with dock) to switch albums on my 160Gb Classic, but on a screen that small from 4 metres away, it's annoying. Especially as I have a 42" plasma there with a blank screen.
Come on Apple, you gave video output, why not your own menus screens!!
I have put in feedback here asking the same question:

  • Can I connect my iPod classic or universal dock with optical

Can I connect my iPod classic or universal dock with optical?

Well, no... not at least with the Apple docks.
Optical Audio is also called S/PDIF. It is a purely digital signal designed for specific kinds of home theater and HIFI systems.
The iPod classic does not have such a connection... that being said,  HOWEVER
There are some iPod docks that use S/PDIF out.

  • What do i get with the component video cable and "new" universal dock?

I've got the component video cable and the original universal dock. it doesn't seem to want to pass audio/video. do i have to have the "new" universal dock to pass the signal? i realize i can just hook up my 3G to the cable directly, but i am in the process of building a small home theater and i want to have a dock i can set my phone in. i like the idea of being able to use a remote as well.
also, what signals get passed. do you see everything as you see it on the iPhone screen? do you see album art on the tv? can you move through iPod menus with the remote looking at the TV?
    thanks.

You only see the video of the TV show or movie you are watching. You don't see album covers or any navigation. If you are playing music there is no video, just audio. You can also see photo slideshows.
You have to start the video on the phone. The remote will pause/play the video, change the volume out of the phone, move forward/back chapters of video, move forward/back songs playing or go fast forward/reverse of songs and video. There is no navigation of your songs/videos via the remote.

  • Mini with new universal dock and IR remote

I just got a new universal dock and IR remote for use with a Mini. It seems like the only controls on the remote that work are Next, Prev, and Play/Pause. Neither of the Volume buttons or the Menu button do anything. Is this normal? Is there any advanced information available for the new IR remote and dock (the manuals aren't very helpful)?

The description would make you think otherwise...
"Control your iPod from afar. Play, pause, control volume and skip forward and back between songs from across the room with the Apple Remote."
It goes on to say that the Menu button is for use with the Mac.
"When you click the Apple Remote's Menu button, your desktop fades and Front Row's sleek interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder and whatever DVDs you want to play."

  • New Universal Dock

Hi there thanks for taking the time to read this, I bought the new universal dock yesterday and although music is working just fine Ive just noticed the iPod is not charging.
I use the firewire charger from my old 4G iPod. I know sync has long gone via Firewire but charging still works. With the iPod connected directly to the FW charger it charges just fine, but nothing at all via the dock.
Does anybody else have their 6G iPod charging through a new universal dock from the FW charger? Not sure if I have a faulty dock, or its just further gouging from Apple which they appear to be getting worse for by the month.
    Many thanks
    Gareth

Hi WhiteKnight999 it appears its further gouging from Apple, I have since posting been forced to buy a new TV out kit which comes with a USB charger and it works just fine.
So on top of the money for the iPod I have had to spend an extra £70 on a dock and video out solutions that I have already paid for once already.
The dock I can forgive as it came as part of the iPods until the 5G, the crippled FW and need for new video leads is just greed however as none of the connects are any different from any iPod going back as far as the 3G (dock) and 1G headphones
Anyhow the point of my original post was is my dock faulty to which I can answer no it is not

  • IPod Classic to Lightning Dock adaptor

Does Apple plan to make and certify an adaptor that will enable the iPod Classic to be docked into new HiFi systems that have the Apple Lightning dock?

    Hi Roberto UK,
The majority of us at the discussions forums don't know about Apple's future products until they officially reveal or release them.
Sadly, at this moment in time, Apple hasn't made an adapter to connect 30 pin devices (like the iPod Classic) to a lightning dock. There are, however, some adaptors that do what you want them to, though reading the Amazon reviews for them, they are nowhere near the quality of an Apple or Apple certified adapter.
    Now, you have a few choices;
    You could buy a new HiFi with a lightning connector and use a 3.5mm aux-aux cable (both ends are like that of a headphone cable);
    You could look for a new HiFi with a 30 pin dock that some companies still produce;
Buy a new HiFi with a lightning dock and try your luck with a third-party adapter which could work, but you should have a cable like the one mentioned in choice 1 as a backup, should the adapter stop working for any reason.
I would personally recommend you buy a HiFi with a lightning port over a 30 pin one since, if you buy a new Apple handheld product in the near future, it will most probably have a lightning port, therefore you don't want to have to shell out £25 for a 30 pin-to-lightning adapter for (all of) your HiFis.

  • New Universal Dock for iPhone3G?

I dragged out my old Universal Dock from my iPod days and the iPhone tells me it is not compatbile....is there a newer compatible Universal Dock for the 3G?
Does the new Universal Dock support video/audio out from the 3G?
I'm guessing compatible is simply something to do with radio interference shielding though...

    UPDATE:
I tried it again a little later, and was surprised to see that video was working! Great, I thought. But after about 2 minutes of flawless playback on the TV, the iPhone just quit playing that video and went back to the video selection screen where I had chosen the video. That is, the iPod app did not crash because iPhone didn't go back to the homescreen. It's just the video stopped playing. And then I couldn't get the video to play on the TV again. After unplugging and replugging the cable several times, I got another video to start playing on the TV, and again after just a minute or so it stopped.
Also, several times I got a message on the iPhone 3G: "This accessory not made to work with iPhone." but it's supposedly compatible with iPhone!
I wonder if this is a problem with this particular cable, or if it's a bug in the iPhone 3G, or if Apple has somehow made it so that we can only use their particular AV cable?
Seeing as how I only paid $16 including shipping for this cable, it's not a huge deal, but I want to make sure that the iPhone 3G should be able to output TV properly before I fork over $50 for the apple-blessed cable. When the video connection WAS working, the video and audio were great. No flaws, no interference (I had the iphone in Airplane mode for some of the time, but the first time I got the video to play on the TV, it was NOT in Airplane mode).
My hunch is that there's an iPhone 3G bug. But if someone is able to output video to a TV from the iPhone 3G without problems, I'd love to be proven wrong.

  • IPod Classic 7th Gen Docking Compatability

I have a brand new iPod Classic 160GB with latest software version (2.0.5 PC) that is barely a week old. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get it to work properly on both the NAD VISO 1 speaker dock and the B&W Zeppelin Air (both also brand new - purchased for the iPod). The iPod docks OK with both, but the playback doesn't work properly with either one and it's frustrating the $@!^*!! out of me.
VISO 1: I have the latest firmware version on the unit and have been in contact with NAD. After confirming that I have latest firmware, they decided the unit was defective so I returned it for a brand new replacement. The replacement has the latest firmware as well and behaves the same way. The iPod will play back normally for awhile (length of normal playback is very variable) but eventually when it come to the end of a song, it just stops playing. The iPod screen still show's the unit in "play" mode, but there is no progress on the song time bar (stays at 0:00) as if it was paused. When this happens, the unit no longer responds to the remote. I can manually pause/play the iPod directly, but it does not progress. If I undock the iPod with it still showing "play" it immediately begins playing once disconnected from the NAD. Re-docking it causes it to freeze in place again. The only way to recover the NAD is to power cycle it. Once power cycled it will play normally for awhile before locking up again - as frequently as after every song. I have an older iPod Classic 80GB running firmware 1.1.2 (which is the latest for that unit) which behaves exactly the same way as the newer iPod on the VISO.
It seems highly unlikely that 2 separate brand new units would be defective in an identical fashion and seems more like a compatibility problem. I offered to communicate directly with the engineers so they could look at it and hopefully make a firmware fix, but according to NAD, the engineers tested a 160GB iPod there and were unable to reproduce the behavior. The NAD sounds great and I really want to make it work, but I can't accept it if this can't be fixed.
B&W Zeppelin Air: Decided to try the B&W since the NAD doesn't want to work right. First thing I did was upgrade it to latest firmware. Could not get it to play with the iPod at all. It connected (battery icon showed it as plugged in) but wouldn't play. I could start play manually on the iPod - and unlike the NAD it WOULD begin playing, but no sound came from the speaker. I tried with the older iPod, and it played perfectly - and sounds outrageously good too. I went back to the 160GB and still couldn't get it to play. After some trial and error, I finally discovered that if I skipped forward or backward a couple tracks, it would finally completely connect and begin playing - but the playback speed is slow. Being the holiday, I have yet to hear back from B&W.
I'm very frustrated. Both of the units sound amazing when they play, but if I can't get them to work right they are worthless.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sorry, not much expert here on SSD mods, you may get better response in the iPod Mod forum.
It has a lot of posts on successful SSD swaps and also some nasty experience on SSD which does not work on some iPod.
Read through the forum and learn together with them, and avoid frustration of getting an expensive SSD, which the iPod firmware can't recognise, and also there is not enough voltage to power up those old SSD using 5volt rails, iPod hardisk uses 3.3volts rails.
    Good Luck!.

  • 3rd generation iPod with Apple Universal Dock?

I have a 3rd generation iPod, the one with touch buttons (not touch screen). The new Apple Universal Dock will run with that iPod model? I know that I won't be able to see videos on a TV because my iPod doesn't play video, but should I'll be able to charge it and sync it with the computer and connect it to the hifi stereo? The Apple Remote could run as well?

I don't see why it wouldn't, unless its for some reason imcompatible with FireWire.
The Apple Store doesn't list it on the compatible iPods list, but I believe that is for 2 reasons: 1) They want you to buy a new, video-capable iPod and 2) It doesn't come with a dock adaptor designed to fit the 3rd gen.

  • IPod Classic with Car Dock

I have a dock/cradle in my car which is connected into my stereo so I can listen to my iPod in the car. I don't know the details of the dock but it does work with my current 80GB iPod Video. Will it work with the new iPod Classic (80GB and 160GB)? I cant see any reason why it wouldn't but I mainly use my iPod in the car so I just want to be sure before buying.

I have a similar dock and it does work...kinda. The controls on the iPod are locked out now so you can only control it via the kit (very limited) and you cannot see which song is playing on the screen.
No idea if this is something Apple intends to fix or if it is something that accessory vendors will have to push updates for. Sorry

  • IPOD Classic/ New Computer

I have a Ipod Classic 160GB. I had to get a new computer. I am wanting to transfer my ITunes Lib. to my new PC. When I tried, a window opened that it can't sync the ITunes Lib. in the new computer(which is empty) at the same time with the ITunes Lib. that is in the IPod. Then it gives 2 choices, 1-"Erase & Sync" which isn't what I want., 2-"Transfer Purchaes". Is #2 refering to my lib. on my ipod now? Alot of the music on my ipod, I have had for years, that I can't replace. Any help would be greatly apprecated

No, but do not dispair... there are a number of 3rd party programs that can transfer stuff back. If you look in this post where I've collected observations, you'll find some links that will describe how.

  • Can I hold my iPod in the Universal Dock?

I've a Universal Dock and a 4th generation iPod with color display. The dock is connected with a JBL Creature II and via the adapter in the stopcontact.
My iPod is now fully loaded ('Charged'). Do I have to delete the iPod from the dock when it's loaded, or can I hold it in the dock? Then it's not for loading, only because it looks great. Is that bad for my battery? ?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is fine if you leave the iPod there. The iPod will stop charging once it is fully charged.
Just make sure you run the battery all the way down and recharge at least once a month to keep a good battery life.

  • IPod classic & New iTunes HELP

I just upgraded my iTunes today to the newest version, 11 and i plugged in my iPod classic as i always do every day to the computer to listen to music through iTunes.  iTunes is only showing the music that was purchased through iTunes ex. 200 songs, and not acknowledging my whole iPod as it always does in the past.  When I click on the top right tab for "my iPod" it does acknowledge that I do have more songs on my iPod example 500.  Where are the rest of my songs? and is there a way I can go back to the older version of iTunes so I can listen to my whole iPod instead? Thanks!

I should've been more clear...it's not a monitor problem...i just can't get the software license agreement page to go away. After i check the box and click save and save it to my computer the screen won't change to the main page thing for my ipod so i can't even start syncing music until i can get that page to show up. I know how to sync my music once i get to that page, but i just don't know how many more times i have to save that stupid license agreement.
