Hello,
The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...
<a href="How to put your iPod into disk mode
Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?
Have you checked this link out?:
iPod doesn't charge correctly
Does your iPod appear in "My Computer"? If so...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
If not...
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes
Post back on what happens when you try these things out. I hope this helps!

• IPod Classic not recognized by iTunes and PC

My old iPod classic has had minor problems throughout the years from songs cutting out in the middle of a song to battery issues but now my iPod Classic is unrecognized by my pc.
I have tried placeing it into forced diskmode which comes up with the basic "connect to computer" symbol and as soon as I connect my cord my iPod Classic restarts and displays the Apple Logo. I have even tried putting it into disk mode while connected but the same thing happens.
I plan on just leaving the iPod classic connected to my docking station for home listing since it has the battary issues.
If anybody can suggest any ways of fixing this connection problem please help me I am going crazy trying everything with no avail.

Your iPod filesystem is corrupted, so your music and podcastr is in the Others, this is most likely caused by a slow USB connection, which timeout during sync.
Try the Hard Reset first
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
Then release the buttons
Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, in this earlier post by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help you decide if your iPod is dying and causing the timeouts.
Have a nice day!

• IPod classic not recognized by iTunes, or as Data disc.

I only see "do not disconnect." Trying reset only generates a file folder icon with the support url and then it returns to "do not disconnect." I am resigned to completely reformatting the iPod, but can't seem to do it. Any advice on getting an icon to appear in iTunes and/or on my desktop so I can reformat?

• Ipod classic not recognized in itunes because of ipodservice.exe

My ipod classic (80gb) is frequently not recognized in itunes 11 running on Windows 8 unless I close itunes, eject the ipod using windows, stop ipodservice.exe (64 bit) using task manager, and restart itunes. Anybody know of a more permanent fix?

That's not a good sign.
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

• IPod Classic not recognized by iTunes, claims to be wiped of all content, and causes computer problems when connected

I have an 80 GB iPod Classic that has suddenly developed severe problems. I'm running iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit.
It was working fine until last night, when I connected it to iTunes to add 6 songs. (Four of these were bought on Amazon.com and 2 ripped from CD's). It accepted the songs and played them fine when connected. When I clicked the icon in iTunes to eject the iPod, it came up with the "OK to Disconnect" and progress bar as usual. However, this time the progress bar didn't start to fill in. It just sat there.
After several minutes the progress bar finally filled in and returned to the menu... but instead of displaying the cover flow on the right side as usual, it showed a gray box with "No Music."
When I tried to re-connect it to my computer, iTunes would not recognize it. My computer also wouldn't recognize it at first... after several minutes, it came up as a generic removable device. Attempting to right-click on it or eject it from Windows was unsuccessful.
The iPod itself displayed "Connected" and alternated the plug image with the spinning arrows. It never said "Synchronizing" as it usually does.
Furthermore, my computer's performance degraded severely while the iPod was plugged in. iTunes itself froze, and even my other applications (such as my web browser) would not work correctly. This all cleared up as soon as I unplugged the iPod. If I tried to initialize iTunes while the iPod was plugged in, it would not open. It opened immediately when I unplugged the iPod.
Finally, despite claiming to have no music or other contents (it had contained only my iTunes music library, which is about 26.5 GB), in Settings the iPod claimed to have only 5.3 GB of free space.
Resetting the iPod with Select/Menu made no change. I was able to put it in diagnostic mode and check the hard drive, which gave these results:
Retracts: 381
Reallocs: 0
Pending Sectors: 10
PowerOn Hours: 417
Smart/Stops: 381
Temp: Current 24c
Temp: Min 15c
Temp: Max 48c
When I put the iPod up to my ear I hear a steady, faint high-pitched sound and an occasional very faint crackling noise. When it shuts down the sound continues for a few seconds, then ends with a kind of squeaking sound.
The iPod is more than 5 years old, so I'm prepared for the probability that it's fried. But I'd like to try everything before I go ahead and spring for a new one.

The iPod's hard drive probably has data corruption. That does not necessarily mean there is a hardware problem. Hard drives, including the ones in computers, can develop data corruption.
Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the computer and connect the iPod. To eliminate other potential issues, you should disconnect other USB devices (you can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected), and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.
iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore, which you should do. This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings. If the problem was only data corruption, and there is no hardware problems, the iPod should have a "fresh start." You can sync it from your iTunes library.
If the iPod does not go into Disk Mode, or if doing a Restore fails, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty.

• Ipod classic not recognized in itunes 11

I have a 160GB ipod classic that cannot be recognized by Itunes 11, however my Iphone 4S is recognized. I purchased a bunch of songs but have not synced my Ipod for quit some time 9/5/13 was the last time. I want to sync my purchased song to my Ipod but under the devices, it's not recognized, the sync area is grayed out.
My Ipod is up to date with the software and I have checked all of my USB ports and cable and they all are working fine. I have even uninstalled and restalled Itunes several time and that does nothing. Any information would be greatly appreciated

• Ipod is not recognized by iTunes and will not sync

When trying to sync my ipod up with iTunes, it is not recognized as a device by iTunes and cannot be synced up. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had this issue. Basically, iPhoto would recognize my iPod Touch and my wife's iPhone, but iTunes would not. Thus, I knew it was not the USB cable or ports.
In one forum, I tried something and it worked.
In Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, I stopped iTunes Helper.
Then I downloaded and reinstalled a fresh copy of iTunes.
Once I restarted iTunes and plugged in my devices, they appeared just like they used to.
Hope this helps.

• Ipod Classic not recognized by iTunes

I am trying to initilize my daughters iPod classic as it won't sync - it is not showing up in iTunes. Here are the trouble-shooting steps I have covered:
- the ipod will not stay connected to itunes for long enough to sync or restore. It breifly appears but then dissappears after about one second. Likewise the desktop.
- It shows up in disk mode on the desktop, but not in itunes.
- It is not the cable or the computer, this has been eliminated as an issue. We have several macs, ipods and ipads in the household to swap and try things out with.
- I have followed instructions on apple support for troubleshooting the ipod, but the ipod won't show up in tiunes in order to restore to factory settings/
- I have put the ipod into disk mode where it shows up on the desktop but not in itunes.
- updated itunes per suggestion restarted computers. Naturally tried disk mode and standard mode.
- After trying everything else, I initialized the ipod with disk utility 9HFS+ Journaled), but still does not show in itunes. It does show on the dektop. In fact, it is hanging iTunes.
Just about out of ideas. If there was someway of initilizing/updating/restoring the ipod without itunes. The computer recognizes the ipod no problem - just not itunes and there does not seem to be a way to restore it without it. Is there some hard reset on the itunes? Back to factory settings?
I have read many similar articles on this forum and others, but nothing has worked or is entirely appropriate. Yet it does seem to be a common problem.

Actually, since writing this I might be further along.
iTunes initially froze (hung) on connecting in standard mode, but just leaving it to sit thinking things over, it finally returned to life with the ipod. I am restoring the software as I type this and hopefully everything will be resolved.
I hope this helps others. The key seems to leave itunes to sort things out while it is hanging.

• IPod Touch not recognized by iTunes and not charging when plugged into computer

I plugged in my iPod touch to my Mac computer. My iPod doesn't charge and iTunes isn't recognizing it. I have turned my iPod on/off, I have reset it, I have the newest version of iTunes, and I restarted my computer. Nothing has helped. What do I do?

Did it sync to the computer before?
What model iPod do you have and what iOS is installed?
Your post states that your have OSX 10.4.11. If you updated the iOS on your iPod on another computer your computer may not recognize the iPod. The newer iOS require 10.5.8 or higher.
