Ipod classic not showing up as a device

my pc is not recognizing my ipod classic as a device...it shows up sometimes as a device and when I click on it, it disappers and then locks up my pc.....please help

Sorry with the minimal info that you provide, this is all I can suggest.
What do you see on your iPod screen?
Can you see your songs Menu on your iPod screen, if you can't, then the ipod need charging, or restore.
Can I assumed, you are running iTunes on Windows OS and that your iPod is formatted using FAT32 and not Mac OS format.
However, iTunes will prompt you to Restore, if it is not the right format for your Window OS, Mac OS X iTunes can handle both FAT32 and HPS+ (journaled).
Your 1st post says sometimes it appears on your PC and hangs if you click on it, sound like your iPod harddisk is dying and taking a long time to validate

My classic iPod is not showing up anymore under devices in my iTunes library. How do I get it to be recognized so I can transfer my iPhone purchases to my classic iPod?

    Hello johnohuk,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like most of your music was purchased from the iTunes Store. If your country supports iTunes in the Cloud, you can download your past purchases using this article:

  • IPod Classic not showing in iTunes or Windows

I received a new iPod 80GB Classic for Christmas today, but I'm having trouble getting it to work with iTunes. I've plugged it into the USB port, but all that happens is that it starts charging but doesn't show in My Computer or iTunes.
Before I got this new iPod I was using a 2GB iPod Nano, could it be because I was syncing a particular iPod with iTunes before I got this new iPod? Or do I have to do something like charge the iPod completely before connecting it to the USB port?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why isn't my ipod shuffle not showing up in my devices, or my desktop?

I received my ipod shuffle (2nd gen) app. 2 years ago, however, this is the first time that I have ever tried to sync my current itunes library onto it. I connected the shuffle with a USB chord, but, the shuffle does not show up in "devices", nor on my desk top like my other ipod does. When it is plugged into the chord, the light flashes orange. I think that orange flashing means that it is "syncing music", however, there is no signs of the shuffle being connected to my Apple Mac in anyway. I have tried rebooting the computer, as well as turning my shuffle on and off. However, nothing has helped it. I have watched videos reviewing "fake shuffles" and I am confident that mine is not a fake. Please help me! Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.  I'm using a new shuffle usb cable in my 2nd generation shuffle and nothing shows up on computer.  I'm wondering if the dock for the second gen is different than the new usb cable direct into the 2nd gen shuffle. I don't have a dock for it.  Before I buy one on ebay I hope someone can assist.

  • Ipod Classic not showing Photos in full screen

I have a new Ipod Classic 80gig version and have sync'd it with my windows PC. All is good other than the photos. It will display them in mini form (like a contact print) but when you click on the photo you want to look at in full size version the screen goes black and it doesn't show thge photo. Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Nick

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • 80GB ipod Classic not showing any Music loaded on it

I have an 80GB Classic Model No A1238. Suddenly the ipod has stopped showing any playlist or music that was there on it. But the ipod shows 56.4gb used and 17.9GB Free which means it still has the data but in the summary it shows Songs 0, Videos 0, Podcast 0 etc... How can i recover the music and make it appear ? Will i have to restore the ipod or there is a way recover ? Please help.

Sounds like the iPod's file system and databases have been corrupted possibly due to a damaged/failing hard drive or failed sync operating with iTunes.  So yes, the only way to try and recover is to restore the iPod to factory settings.

  • IPod Classic not showing in iTunes

    Hi guys
I am trying to upload new songs onto my iPod Classic (30GB Black).
The device is working fine but when I connect it to iTunes it doesn't appear as a device (although it appears in Finder as a 'drive').
I've made sure that all of my Mac updates are done and I've tried connecting the iPod to two different Macs but no joy.
    Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks
    Stuart

Did you try another computer, sometimes tunes act craze on windows specially when having a problems with iPods its some how stops responding to specific device until you reformat it on another computer.
I always use the Mac iTunes to fixissues, its always working perfectly.

  • Ipod Classic Not showing some of the artists

My ipod 80 gig is not showing an artist on my artist list but if you go under albums its there.... any ideas why

Two things often contribute to this.
One is that some songs might be tagged as Part Of A Compilation (see the Get Info on those songs/albums) in which case they will not show up under the artist.
Second, is that an artist needs at least two different Albums identified for their songs to all list under the artist. In other words, if you import a CD with album name then add a handful of misc songs without album names associated, those handful will not show up under the artist name.
But add an album name to at least one of those handful of misc. songs and then ALL of the songs should show up under the artist.
You don't have to do it for all of them, just enough to have two different albums identified with the artist. But in general, it is a good idea to make sure your tunes have Song name, artist name, and album name associated with them as a minimum.

  • 120Gb Ipod classic not showing in iTunes

    Help me!
We recently bought the 120GB Classic ipod and realised when we got home that it didnt work through the USB port on our stereo (JVC). So, I did a little bit of homework and in iTunes, I ticked the boxes for 'Use as mass storage device' and 'manage my own music'. Now when I connect the Ipod to the laptop, it will show the ipod in My Computer but it wont show it in iTunes. An error eventually appears when i open itunes which says 'The specified I/O operation on \device\harddisk\dr14 was not completed before the time-out period expired'.
I cant undo what i did as i cant see it in iTunes. I reset the settings on the actual iPod but it still doesnt work (just removed the music instead).
Can anyone help me to fix this?

Try holding down the menu and center button at the same time until the Apple logo comes up. Once you have gotten that far, connect to your system and in iTunes, select the iPod and restore it.

  • IPod classic not showing up...anywhere

Hello all, I've had my 120gig classic for 6 months and all of a sudden it started locking up my computer when I plugged it in to sync/charge. After a while, it said that the iPod may be corrupt and I needed to restore it to use with Windows.
That's cool and all, but I can't actually access the iPod in iTunes - it just locks up, and eventually says "hey, you should restore this." I have tried reinstalling iTunes twice with latest version (following all the steps in the support articles here) along with clearing temp files, stopping/starting the device in Windows manager, trying in disk mode, etc. Nothing.
By the way, when I kick it into disk mode and try to access it from Windows, I can SEE the iPod, but when I try to access it I get a similar lock up, and after a few minutes it quits trying to access the disk.
finally, even with all these problems I DID still have access to all my music on my iPod. However, now the music has disappeared, though it still says my iPod only has ~200 megs free. So it's still got all the files on there.
is my iPod screwed? is it my computer? Should I just go stick my head in the oven?
    any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Ipod touch is not showing up as a device in itunes, how can I sync it?

Hi just wondering how to sync my ipod touch using itunes - when the ipod will not show up as a device. I am having trouble with the ipod as it is displaying the incorrect date, will not access my email etc. However when I go to sync it  (thinking this would help) it does not even show upin itunes. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

  • Ipod Classic connected but not showing in Itunes under Devices

I know this is similar to a few of the other issues that are described, if anyone can offer a link to another thread where the resolution is posted, that would be great, thanks!
I plug my ipod into my computer, I get a windows message saying some files may be damaged, Itunes actually automatically loads up but my Ipod is not shown in the Devices list in Itunes
I have been wracking my brain over this!
I have uninstalled/reinstalled Itunes 3 times, have reset my ipod manually (& now have no music on it at all!) have put the Ipod into disk mode, have taken it out of disk mode. On my laptop I've gone into Services - stopped/then started the Apple Device. I've removed the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver & reinstalled all to no avail! It still wont show up in Itunes!
    Just to clarify;
    - My laptop CAN see my ipod in its list of devices under My computer
    - When I connect the Ipod, I get a window message from Windows saying some files may be damaged & it suggests running a scan.
    - Itunes will start up when i plug in my IPOD, however
    - My IPOD will not show up in the list of devices in Itunes
Another thing, I have 120GB ipod when I did a restore it deleted all the music but it is telling me that i only have 111GB memory available?!?!
After reading through the forums I did see someone state somewhere that you can restore your Ipod from Windows but I can't find the link that gives a list of instructions on how to do this.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    thanks

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Regarding the error message about needing to scan and fix your iPod, see this article and follow the provided instructions to prevent the error message from reappearing. It may also resolve your "iPod missing in iTunes" issue as well.

Yes you can use the tools provided by Windows to reformat your iPod. Just make sure to format it as FAT32 and that the "Quick Format" option is not selected. For complete instructions, see this article.
