IPod classic not syncing - "determining tracks to sync"

Hi everyone, hopefully someone will be able to help me out with this. I've had my iPod 80GB classic for about a year now, (it's out of warranty) and about a month agoit suddenly started playing up. When it's connected to my laptop, iTunes recognises that an iPod is connected but it doesn't add any music to it. It tells me that the sync is complete, but during the sync it tells me that it is determining tracks to sync and then says it's complete, but nothing is added. I have no idea what's wrong with it, i have the latest version of iTunes and am really frustrated with it now! if anyone's encountered this problem and has the solution i'd be really grateful. I'm using windows vista if that information is helpful at all! Thank-you
I've read another thread on this matter and the user suggested doing a check to see if it's the harddrive and these are the results
Retracts: 5
Reallocs: 8
Pending Sectors: 0
Power on hours: 1044
Start/stops: 14494
no idea what any of those mean but any help would be brilliant
Thanks,
Karen

I too have the same problem with an iPod classic 80GB on a macbook with iTunes 10 and snow leopard with all the latest updates.
If I leave mine syncing overnight then it will finish, but doesn't actually add the newly downloaded tracks. Otherwise it just continually says Syncing ipod step 2 of 2 determining tracks to sync.
This is in my opinion a catastrophic failure and should be no. 1 priority for apple to fix. I don't listen to music on my mac, I listen on my iPod or iPod dock, so now I have purchased genuine iTunes songs which are of no use to me until I can get them onto my iPod.
I have also tried to restore my iPod which worked fine, so now I have no music on my iPod at all and iTunes still won't sync anything to it.
This seems to be affecting a lot of users as I've seen various other posts with the same issue.
Please apple fix this issue with iTunes urgently.
I also read on a forum somewhere probably this one, that uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes doesn't solve the problem but I don't know if anyone has rolled back to version 9

  • My ipod has been connected for over an hour, and it still says 'determining tracks to sync'. What should I do?

I have an iPod classic 30GB. I've just got a new laptop and i have transferred my itunes library from my old laptop to my new one. I've also updated my library substantially, and want to erase everything from my ipod and sync the new library onto it. However, it's been connected for an hour and is still saying 'determining tracks to sync'. Is this normal? How long should it take, if my new library is about 10.5GB large?

When you switched chargers, did you use the 10 watt chargers designed for the iPad?  Did you also change the connecting wires?  Have you tried power off, hold the sleep/power button until the red slider appears and slide to off.  Then plug the iPad in?
If none of that is working, it could be a bad 30-pin connector in the iPad...an Apple genius bar tech can test and see if that is the problem.

  • ITunes cannot sync apps to the iPod because the apps installed on the iPod could not be determined error message

I've been getting the "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPod because the apps installed on the iPod could not be determined" error message for a while. I have tried restoring my iPod but as soon as I try to sync it again (even with nothing changing in iTunes or on the iPod) I get the same error message. Whenever I want to add music to my iPod I have to delete everything and then wait hours for it to restore which is ridiculous. Anyone have any other suggestions for fixing this problem?
I'm using a 3rd generation iPod touch with 4.2.1 software and iTunes 10.5.3.3

The fact that there is so many discussions with no clear answer is the problem.
I went back and looked through all the different suggestions and and tried them all to make sure I didn't miss anything. What finally worked for me was making sure all apps were updated on the iPod and making sure all apps were updates in iTunes (under the Library>Apps tab NOT under devices) and then syncing.

  • ITunes cannot sync apps to the iPod because the apps installed on the iPod could not be determined

I have a 3rd generation iPod touch. I just downloaded the IOS 5.0, I seem to have all the features (reader, notification center, newsstand, etc.), but I recently experienced a problem.
After getting the update and restoring my iPod, iTunes started reinstalling all my music, apps, and videos. It reinstalled all my apps last, and before that, I used iTunes to delete a lot of them and organize them into folders. I then re synced it. Midway through this, I had to leave, but I had heard that I could sync my iPod wirelessly if it was connected to wifi and an outlet, so I checked the little box and tried this. However, I then got the error message "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPod '______' because the apps installed on the iPod could not be determined". All my songs, videos, and 5,800 photos are on there, but half my apps are fully synced and usable, while the other half shows up with a loading bar at the bottom saying "waiting".
Yes, I have the "Sync Apps" box ticked.
    Yes, my computer is authorized.
Yes, I have verified that all the apps are in my iTunes.
Yes, I tried plugging my iPod back into iTunes and manually syncing it.
I would simply restore it and resync again, but the majority of my photos aren't on my computer, so if I did that, they would be gone. After I installed the IOS 5.0, and my iPod was restored, it automatically put all my photos back. If someone can tell me whether or not this is something that's automatic whenever you restore your iPod (whether it be manually from iTunes or from an update), that would also be greatly appreciated.
However, what I'm looking for is simply a way to get my other 80+ apps back in working order without having to restore my iPod or anything too complicated.

    EDIT:
I tried restarting my iPod... now it just says that the iPod cannot be synced because the required disk cannot be found.
This update is seriously frustrating. I've heard from a lot of people that the wifi iTunes sync isn't working either.

I think we may have an answer here as these 2 threads seem related to our problems. Unfortunately it's not an answer that's welcome.

  • IPod Classic 160 takes 50+ Hours to sync 32700 Songs

I have one of the original 160GB iPod classics and I am attempting to sync it with a large iTunes library (32700 songs) and it is taking 50+ hours to do so...I assume it has something to do with the fact that I have lots of smart playlists...I have synced this same iPod with another smaller iTunes library (18000 songs, quite a number of smart playlists) and it syncs in a few hours...any help would be greatly appreciated...I have unistalled/reinstalled the latest version of iTunes,...

I should also note that I have attempted to sync the same library with a newer 160GB Classic iPod (2.0.4 firware) with the same results...my older 160GB Classic is running firmware 1.1.2, I have read the posts re: downgrading to FW 1.1.1 but am hesitant to do so given that the same thing happens with the other 160GB iPod

  • When syncing itunes goes through the process of syncing cal, mail, etc. but when gets to determining tracks to sync it freezes

While syncing iTunes will go through the process with no problems but when it reaches the phase that is determining tracks to sync it freezes up.

I have the same problem when syncing just-released audio books from Audible.com. New books from last month sync fine but not this month. Audible acknowledges an issue with iTunes that would be resolve in the next fix but when is that?

  • HT1719 'determining tracks to sync' stays in the banner bar forever, no tracks (podcasts) sync

My shuffle will not sync to any of my old podcasts and continues to have the 'determining tracks to syncs' show up when I try it manually

My shuffle will not sync to any of my old podcasts
This problem occurs with ALL of your "old" podcasts?  Does it work with "new" podcasts?  If it works with newer podcasts (or podcasts that you recently downloaded), can you see anything that differentiates "old" versus "new"?  That might provide a clue for the cause.
continues to have the 'determining tracks to syncs' show up when I try it manually
When you were trying to sync podcasts automatically (NOT manually), did iTunes provide any indication that the podcasts did not sync (like an error message).  If so, what was the message?  If not, how did you check to see that the podcasts were NOT on the shuffle?
Which shuffle model do you have?  This article about shuffle syncing shows the four types.

    Hello,
The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...

Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?

It looks like Helvetica 8 but I'm not sure. The font used in the Table of contents is much more readable, so it should be possible to increase the font size in the notes. I'll ask Apple… I'm joking.
