IPod Classic - ok with Windows, not with iTunes

Hi,
I have a Classic 160GO iPod.
Suddenly this problem appeared :
- no music or pictures were recognized by my iPod, but the disk space was used for "Other"
- this iPod is not known with iTunes
- This iPod is known as a removable hard disk, via Windows 7 (Main computer), Windows XP (secondary computer), a linux thing (a friend computer).
1. I already checked this iPod with the diagnostics mode (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/19048752#19048752)
result is :
- reallocs : 0
- Pending sectors : 32
My understanding is that my iPod hard disk is ok and valid.
2. I followed most of the recommended way to repaird the iPod as per Support (8 out of 10)
NOthing is working.
I confirm I have installed the latest version of iTunes.
3. I read the following page : https://discussions.apple.com/message/19158071#19158071 to find the relevant firmware.
But the iPod Classic 160GO is not in the list.
My questions
--> Do you have an idea to solve my problem ?
--> What could happend i I format my iPod with windows ? It would be only a hard disk after, wouldn't it ?
--> I f I format, is there a solution to re-install the iPod software (= firmware ?)
Thank you for your help.

The iPod hardisk is  looks new from the Reallocs and ON Hours, but, it is rebooting more to get the correct spin for data verification, causing tImeouts,  so the Pending Sector will increase.
There maybe something, near the iPod environment, that is causing the drive to fail, and overheat, if it has not already been damaged, or maybe it is just one Hardisk, that slipped through poor quality control.
You can bring the Retract, Realloc and pending number low, by doing low level format, see this article, but your problem of Hardisk rebooting to find a good cluster, wont go away
Just my thoughts.
Magnets are the primary cause of hardisk crashes,  I would also suspect, using your handphone, while it is near the iPod would also be bad, see the YouTube video on hardboiled eggs using handphone.

  • Ipod Works with Windows, not with Itunes

Hi there. Three members of our family now have ipods. We were using them with 2 computers, with all three on each. It was only about two weeks ago that they stopped working with one of the computers. And not all at the same time, either. The 2nd and 3rd ipods connected to the desktop stopped working at the same time. The first to ever be connected remained working, but then stopped. These working/not working changes occurred around the removing (2nd and 3rd stopped) and then replacing (1st stopped) of our external hard drive. The drive letter for our ipods now reads 'C:', but our local disk has always been 'F:'.
I am using Windows XP SP2, the firmware is 1.0 for all of them. I used to have the latest Itunes and latest updater, but I recently reinstalled the CD that originally came with package, and now I have older ones. I tried everything on the support site's page "Windows sees my Ipod, Itunes doesn't."
I can't restore my ipod because the updator/ipod for windows doesn't detect it.
    Thanks for any help.

I figured it out! I thought it had something to do with the ipod being remapped C:. So all I had to do was to change the drive to I: for Ipod, and put my Maxtor back to C.
    :. problem solved.

  • HT6437 iPod Classic on Desktop but not in iTunes

I have an iMac running the latest version of iTunes and Yosemite. I plug in my apple iPod classic and it shows up on the desktop and will actually start iTunes but will not show up in iTunes. If iTunes is running when I plug it in the it will bring it to the front, but still not show up. Any suggestions on how to get it to show up and syncing iTunes would be greatly appreciated. This is only happened since the latest upgrade in Yosemite.

To add information if I have iTunes not running and connect any one of the devices iTunes will start up but non of the devices will sync or show up in iTunes. They all show up on the desktop however. I have an old iPod Touch that is not set to disk mode that does show up and sync so this has me wondering if it has some thing to do with the disk mode setting.

Brand new computer with Windows 8.1 will not sync to iPod Classic 120G.  Windows does not recognize anything but iPod Touch?  Is there a simple solution.  Diagnostics have run and failed to point to a fix.

Might be worth tearing down the whole iTunes install and starting over...
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    and paste into:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

i have ipod classic 5gen it will not sync with windows the error message says ipod can not sync as required file missing   wht to do???

Although you used the new USB 3.0 port, the actual connection speed is still USB2.0, as the iPod Dock connector, does not have the 10 times faster USB3.0 signal pins, the connection speed is still 480Mbits/s
I assumed that you have tried the other USB 2.0 port to no success..
Can you do the iPod Disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.
    Have a nice day!

My ipod classic 80 gb will not sync with contacts in outlook in windows 7. It never has synced all contacts but for a while it would sync "All Contacts" if I created a distribution group in Contacts for that purpose.  Now it will not even do that. What can i do ?

    Hi there,
I would recommend reviewing the process for setting up syncing in iTunes 11. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • My IPOD Classic 160GB is now not recognized by iTunes and will not sync

I have a 160GB IPOD Classic that now will not sync with iTunes. Both the iPod and iTunes have up to date software versions and I am connecting thru a MAcBook Pro running OS X 10.10.2. I have synced this iPod i the past with no problems and now it does not appear in the iTunes source list.
I have tried the rest options that the Troubleshooting guide suggested and now at a loss for the next step.

This is a problem caused by 10.10.2, only way to fix it at the moment is to revert to 10.10.1.
Quite a few threads on it on other sites and only that one solution. Make sure you raise a feedback to apple though.

  • HT5622 My Ipod Classic shows a red circle with a cross in the middle. I've completed diagnostic tests which have popped up, however any HP/FW/Hard Drive tests freeze the ipod, as if the hard drive won't spin. What do I do?

My Ipod Classic shows a red circle with a cross in the middle. I've completed diagnostic tests which have popped up, however any HP/FW/Hard Drive tests freeze the ipod, as if the hard drive won't spin. What do I do?
After holding down the Select and Play/Pause button, I was able to restart the Ipod and then it brought me to a Diagnositc test. I have tried doing both the Mannual and Annual test on the ipod however in each test, the ipod freezes on different access tests. The HP (headphones) test, shows the headphones are detected, but then if it tries to play a song to make sure they work it freezes and goes back to the red cross. I have looked at various other questions regarding the FW cable, however I don't believe i have such a cabel. Then the Hard Drive test freezes up and I can hear a ticking noise coming from the drive but it doesnt seem to be spinning. Alongside these test issues, any computer cannot see the Ipod when plugged in (including itunes). Therefore some tests for the USB drive cannot be completed. I do not recall dropping it badly, though I have dropped it previously. Does all this mean there is damage to the drive? Should I instead take it to an apple store?
    Many Thanks

The stats look fine. Try the DFU Restore method shown in Corrupt iPod classic. It may pay to disable any anti-virus software and use the staged transfer method to reload data, assuming you get that far.
