IPod Classic - skips tracks between songs

i have a brand 120G classic. when i play with my BOSE sound dock it periodically skips half way through tracks -- various tracks. But when i use any of my other iPods (iTouch, mini, friends classix) they work fine (so that eliminates the docking station being at fault.
i have rebooted, reloaded, reinstalled software for the iPod classic. BUT it keeps happening.
any ideas?

I, like everyone else, am having the same issue. I have a black 120GB classic. Noticed the issue while deployed to Iraq and working out in the gym. Thought it was a headphone issue (was using the ear buds with remote) returned them and problem remains. Now back and having the problem even when not being moved around. I am gonna try the back light recommendation, but, I don't like having the back light always on, so, that is a pain in the butt. I, too, AGREE that having this problem listed for OVER a year now is POOR business management APPLE!!!! This is the only issue I have ever had with apple products....But, definitely the most ANNOYING problem to have...

  • Itunes/ipod classic skipping halfway through songs

When I skip to another song while 1 is currently playing and I get back to it at another time, the song picks up where i left it. Not at the beginning where it should???? This happens on itunes and my classic. Is there a setting somewhere i can not find?

    Hello ragweed fan,
Make sure the "Remember Playback Position" option is not enabled for these tracks in iTunes. To do this, locate the tracks having this issue, right->click on them and choose "Get Info." When the window pops up, head over to the Options tab and make sure there is no tick mark next to "Remember playback position" and see if that helps.

  • Ipod making "skipping" noises BETWEEN songs...

Hmm, this might be hard to explain, my ipod does not skip during a song, but when switching to the next song, there's a loud, garbled noise that sounds like a record skipping, or maybe a cd fast forwarding. I'm trying all of apple's solutions and so far none have worked, but I'm in the process of restoring right now. Everything sounds normal in itunes, it's only the ipod, and only between songs. I'm nervous that my hard drive might be going, has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

  • IPod Classic skipping/stopping when using Infiniti M37 factory installed dock

We have 2 Infiniti M37s and when I use my iPod Classic in either one, songs will skip/stop during play (happens randomly and not with the same song each time and the frequency differs, too) and then resume, though all songs play without skipping/stopping when I use my Bose headset (not in the car!).  It happens on all road surface types and, thinking it may have been the cable, have used 3 different cables to connect from the car dock to my iPod.  Same problems.  I had a Toyota before and never had this problem with with the same iPod.  Help?!!!  Thanks.

This most likely won't completely solve your problem and you might've already tried it, but try restarting your iPod. It might just need a rest! To do this, press the Menu and center button on your iPod until it turns black and then restarts itself. (You'll know it's restarting when you see the apple come up on the screen.)

  • My ipod click skips to random songs after playing 10 seconds of a song

my ipod click skips to random songs after playing 10 seconds of a song and it won't reset either, can anyone help?
    ipod click   Windows 2000

There are three possible causes of skipping music after playing a bit of the song:
    1) the music on your computer is munged
    2) the music was munged as it transferred to your iPod
    3) the iPod is 'confused'
Listen to a couple songs on your computer - the same ones that are skipping on your iPod. Are they okay? Scratch problem 1 - otherwise you have some reripping to do, assuming you haven't backed them up.
Next, reset your iPod. If the music is still skipping then the fastest fix is to use your restore/upgrade software to restore the iPod. This will erase the music and re-install the iPod's operating system which will take care of possible problems 2 and 3.
If the iPod isn't resetting - first make sure you are following the reset instructions for your iPod. There are different methods for different generations. Also, sometimes it is best to reset with the iPod plugged in. Finally, make sure you don't have the hold button set.

  • Ipod classic skips with songs downloaded from itunes and mp3's.

I have an ipod 120gb classic, I listen to it in my van through my alpine car stereo, i found that it would start to play songs and then skip to the next song in the playlist, i thought it may have been the cable for the stereo that was the problem, 2 month ago i changed the stereo and the cables and with the brand new stereo the ipod is still skipping through songs which leads me to believe that its an ipod issue and not my alpine, is there anyway to correct this, as it is very annoying, i bought the ipod to avoid having cds and damagings them now the ipod is doing what cds do, skipping tracks, and then ive noticed for such an expensive investment, apple has not been able to resolve the problem.

I need to know more specifics about your problem.
Are your songs ending earlier than expected and the play count incrementing? If you push the back button to play the song again, does it end at the same premature time? Can you scrub (push the center select button once and then scroll) to a point 60 seconds after the songs cuts off and hear the remainder of the song play? If you listen to the same song on your computer and it plays fine all the way through and all of the above applies, then the problem is that iTunes is omitting a small amount of data in the midst of the data stream as it transfers files to the iPod.
Uncheck the song(s) ending too early; sync; check the song(s) ending early; sync. iTunes will then send a new copy of each song to the iPod. If any song on the iPod isn't repaired after this (and the point where the song cuts off may change), then repeating the process for any song which didn't get repaired should work.

  • IPod Classic Skipping Songs?

Ever since yesterday my iPod Classic has been skipping songs when I press the next button. I browse songs by artist, and when I choose the first song in an album instead of saying like '1 of 6' it'll say '4 of 6' and then it'll just go through the songs arbitrarily. :/
I also can't locate the voice recorder feature either. I treat my iPod Classic as if it were my child, this recent malfunction has really gotten me shaken.

Forgot to mention, I've already tried hard resetting, didn't do anything.

  • Classic SKIPS TRACK while on HOLD sometimes.

I ordered my iPod Classic the other week and it arrived Monday, and I started using it just about 48 hours ago. I usually put it on shuffle and keep it on hold, and for the most part, it runs smoothly. After every 30 or 40 songs, however, the iPod will skip to the next track at any moment in the song. At first I thought I might have just accidentally clicked the skip button while hold was off, but much to my dismay, that theory has been proven wrong a good 6 times since. I can confirm that the iPod skips track while on hold in my pocket, me minding my own business.
I restored the factory settings this morning, thinking perhaps something went wrong when I first started up my iPod, but it has happened once since then.
I was wondering if this is a common problem perhaps with the current firmware or a setting out of place, or if it's a hardware problem that warrants a return to the good ol' factory. Thanks ahead of time, I'll check back and elaborate on the problem if need be.

I am having similar problem, but not exactly same. I haven't noticed the "hold" switch having any effect either way. See details below (first line is iLounge post title):
iPod Classic (7g) won't play MPEG4 audio files; keeps skipping to next track
Brand-new ipod will not play MPEG4 audio-only (not video) files that have file extension .mp4 (they still don't play if switched to .m4a extension). Having no problems playing other files .mp3, .m4a. The "Summary" tab on the file info shows file type as "MPEG-4 video file". Is this the problem, or do all mp4 tracks default to that file type?
When i try to play any album of .mp4 tracks, the iPod just skips from the track 1 to track 2, then to the 3d, and so on until it runs out of tracks -- after playing maybe a split second, maybe nothing of each track. This happens with various albums, and only with .mp4 files, no others.
All these tracks do play flawlessly in iTunes as audio tracks, and in Quicktime no video shows up; and they will play off the iPod, when the iPod is playing through iTunes. But not when iPod is playing alone.
I have restored iPod & installed the software update. I can get tracks to play if i use "convert to AAC option", but for various reasons this not desirable solution.
Any ideas on how to get these .mp4 tracks to play on the iPod? Anyone else having this problem ? I googled & didn't see any reference to this problem with MPEG4 audio, only so problems with video files.

  • IPod Classic freezes while adding songs when only half-filled

I'm trying to be as detailed for best results.
I have an 80 GB iPod Classic. Running on 4 years since I purchased it. Treated well, not overplayed, charged frequently, etc.
Recently I've had problems when it comes to adding music, however. At a certain point when the harddrive is filled (somewhere close to 50%), it seems to not be able to add any more songs. For instance, I have somewhere around 6,000 songs in my iTunes library. After restoring and trying to copy over them all, the system hangs at just around 5,500 tracks. Then it is unable to sync. Then it is unable to eject. Then it is an annoyance.
After a very frustrating day of attempting to figure out the problem, I have concluded what is NOT the problem.
USB ports - I've used all of them, tested with other devices, have never had problems in the past
USB cable - switched between two different ones. I've been able to connect and edit titles/album art without any problem
iTunes - used a third party software to manage iPod and it had the same problem; I've also updated, reinstalled and downgraded to various versions as well
Corrupt song/file - While iTunes may hang on a certain song when bulk syncing, trying again doesn't affect it.
Diagnostics issue - used information found on these forums to check diagnostics levels and the numbers all look fine
Uploading too many songs at once - I've gone through and uploaded each album INDIVIDUALLY and had the same problem around the same track number. I've even uploaded about 5,000 songs, ejected, hooked up and tried to continue later in the day and it still will eventually freeze up.
That's about all I can think of. As of now my musical library just barely fits into this half-hearted iPod. I would really like to figure out if there's a fixable problem before I invest in more digital media.
Is there any reason why my iPod would just sort of give up when the harddrive is half-filled?

I was having the same problem.
I have an i pod classic 80GB (with the wheel) I think it's 5th generation
I would start a Sync, it would sync 2 or 3 songs then stop or hang up, which did not interfere with any other function, so I would not say it froze.
Once I ended the sync by clicking on the X next to the sync progress bar at the top of the window, I ejected the ipod and then plugged it in again.  Then  I selected my i pod under Devices in the menu on the left-hand side of iTunes.  Clicked on the summary tag.  Clicked on  "Manually manage music and videos" Clicked ok and apply.
When in manual mode, you cn drag songs from  iTunes to the device icon in the sidebar. Once I downloaded the song or songs or album that was causing the problem, I then unselected manual load, and everything else was able to sync normally on automatic mode.

  • My ipod classic skips in the car via USB, PLEASE HELP!

When i connect my Ipod classic via USB in my car it skips tiny amounts during songs. It plays fine other wise, throught the headphone hole is fine. I have tried a new cable, It has the latest software, I have looked at other forums where they say make all the tracks the same bitrate and stuff like that but im sure thats not the problem as it happens on all tracks and the bitrates of my collection vary as thay are all from differnent sources. • Song downloaded from iTunes plays fine in iTunes, but only first 15 seconds will play on iPod then skips to next song?

Songs that I download from iTunes play ok in iTunes. On iPod classic though, SOME (but not ALL) of these downloaded songs will only play for 15 seconds or so before it skips to the next song. It is random in that some songs off the same album will do this, but others not. Any ideas?

    Try this Hard Reset
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
    Test the sound again.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

If these songs are in MP3 format, google and download MP3 Validator and run through songs in the library.
    Good Luck!

  • Ipod Mini skipping tracks randomly

Help, my Ipod's gone all weird on me - had it for approx 8 months without a pick of bother, however yesterday its refusing to play certain songs - songs which have played without a hitch before, and automatically jumps or skips to the next listed track. The songs play fine on my PC and were all downloaded from itunes.

You need to play at least a part of songs purchased from the iTMS to authorize them. They won't copy to your iPod until you do this.
How to transfer Purchased Music from iTunes to your iPod
    iTMS Song and Computer Authorization
If you've played & authorized them in iTunes and they still skip, try this. De-authorize the computer in iTunes/Advanced menu, then re-authorize it. You re-authorize it by playing one of the songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store within iTunes. It should ask you for your Apple ID and password, and then the computer will be authorized again. Sync your iPod with iTunes, and those songs should play on the iPod once again.
Another common cause of this is not having the latest version of iTunes.
If you are using the latest version of iTunes (6.0.2), then you need to make sure your iPod software is up to date also. Get the iPod Updater software, install it, run it and update your iPod.
When you have done this, authorize your music in iTunes by playing a few seconds of it within iTunes, re-sync your iPod, and it should transfer by whatever synching method you choose.

  • IPod Classic Won't Play Songs, but Resetting Worked??

I have a brand new iPod Classic that I just bought on Saturday 10/26/2013.
I got it all set up on Sunday 10/27, and started listening to it at the office yesterday, Monday 10/28.
I started using it at the office again today, 10/29, and after a few songs, I noticed that the progress indicator was pegged at the end of the song, with 0:00 remaining, but the song continued to play. I was curious about that, so pressed << to go back to the start of the song. The song reset to the begining, but would NOT play.  I tried power cycling, and tried playing other songs, all with the same result - the song would show up in the screen, but would not play.
I saw the instructions on the Apple support page suggesting resetting the device, and sure enough, the iPod now plays again.
Here are my questions: This seems to have been a known problem for at least a few years, judging from the time/date stamps on the earlier discussions I've seen on this forum.
How is it that this problem has never been fixed?
How is it that you release a product and have instructions for the user to just try resetting the devce when it fails to work? If I released a product like that, I would probably be fired.
Are there any plans to provide a software update that resolves this issue?

I had the exact same problem happen with my iPod Classic. It was playing along just fine - and then went silent. When I checked, it was skipping from one song to the next. Now I can't get it to play anything.
Not sure what AAC version is, but if it was working fine for the last two years, I don't believe that changing the format would make a difference. It must be something else.

  • ITunes and iPod Classic remembering track locations?

    Hello,
I recently had to redo my computer again......Anyways, I just got iTunes reinstalled and reimported my library from my backup drive. I just got all the track names redone again and erased and resynced (for the 5th time) my entire iPod.
Now, Whenever I listen to a song on the iPod or iTunes and I switch the track wether 5 seconds or 30 seconds (or whatever) into the song, it will switch, but when I switch back to that same track it will start playing from the point it left off...not the beginning like it used to. I have checked the settings in iTunes and on my iPod, and reset my iPod and ran diagnostics. Nothing.
Why is my music being remembered? It makes it annoying to go to a song and have to restart it. I was going to format my entire iPod then restore the software, but I saw iTunes was doing the same thing so I know its not my iPod.
I have the Dell Optiplex GX260 running Windows XP Media Center 2005, iTunes 9.0.1.8 and an iPod Classic 80GB running software 1.1.2 PC. If it is relevant, The player in my car is a Pioneer DEH-P5800MP connected to a CD-IB200. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

    I THINK I FOUND A SOLUTION!
While browsing through the iPod Classic thread, I found a topic similar to this. The solution is right there.
Go to Music and select ALL of your songs (windows is CTRL+A). Right click when they are all selected and click Get Info. Go to the options tab, check the box that says "Remember Position" and be sure the dropdown says "No". Click ok, and it will update all the songs on your library.
After I tested it with iTunes, I resynced and it solved it on the iPod as well. Thank you all!
