IPod Classic sorting TV episodes incorrectly???

Hi,
I have an iPod Classic that is listing TV episodes by release date insread of episode number.
A Nano synced with the same content has arranged everything by episode number.
Both iPod's are normally synced to indows computers, but the video content was from a MacBook.
There is a lot of chatter about this issue, though no solutions.
Can anybody help?

As of firmware 1.0.3 it appears that TV shows are ordered by release date. Sadly the iTunes interface does not provide a way to update these values but there are 3rd party tools that can help. Lostify apparently does the trick for Mac users, though I've no practical experience being stuck in the PC universe. PC users might like to try Tagger....
Tagger needs a bit of effort to get working so for PC users I'll share my experience. The download is RAR compressed so first you need an unpacker for that - I plumped for 7-Zip. Tagger relies on a working Java RunTime Envionment, not just the browser plug-ins so I headed off to java.sun.com for the *JDK 6 Update 3*. Once Tagger is up & running it's still not clear exactly how you are supposed to enter the date but further seaching revealed that it should be in the format YYYY-MM-DD. The good news is, it works! I've only done one of my series so far but the episodes are now in the correct order. Tagger also includes options to change all sorts of other hidden attributes which aren't exposed in the iTunes interface, e.g. Podcast details, ratings etc.

IPod classic - sort order of podcasts

I have a new iPod Classic 160 GB. Love it so far, but it has one annoying thing. In iTunes, I have my podcasts sorted from oldest to newest. There are some podcasts, like news and training podcasts that need to be listened from oldest to newest or the content gets confusing when listening out of order. When I sync podcasts to my iPod, it refuses to sort from oldest to newest (even though when I look at the sort order of my iPod in iTunes it does show the order correct, just not on the actual iPod). So when I start a podcast, it automatically plays going from newest to oldest, which is not what I want. Any way I can change that?

This drives me crazy as well. I hope they fix this in a firmware update.

IPod Classic play timer thingy incorrect

I've got an iPod Classic 80GB, and noticed the other day that every 10 seconds or so, the track timer (time elapsed on one side, time remaining on the other) will skip a second. eg 1,2,3,4,6,7,8...etc.
It's not exactly worrying or anything, just a bit annoying. I like to know how long my songs have gone on for, and how long is remaining.
It's not just on one particular song either; it appears to happen on every song.
Theres no pause when it skips a second, and the music doesn't jump, it just misses a number.
Any ideas on how to fix it? Or is it something I should mention to Apple via the feedback form and hope it gets fixed in the next firmware update?

Ipod classic sorts album other than in itunes

i sorted all my albums in itunes as i like it by album interpret. On Ipod this order is ignored. I wanted all the albums for the Kids at the beginning of Cover Flow.
How do i change the order of albums on the ipod?

hi Jeff. Since you know all very well, one last question since i just started using i-tunes and i-pod.
In i-tunes i sorted a lot of stuff like DJ-Sets, or music from other sources than CD by album artist. That works well.
My I-Pod Classic syncs an is saying me "Unknown Artist" or "Various Artists" for that albums and puts some to Compilations, some to different places. I want the DJ Sets at the same position as the published CDs for example.
Again, i have all that in i-tunes done already and it works.
For Example cannot move Cafe del to "C" on ipod, its always at the end at Various Artist...
Maybe not all wording correct since i use i-tunes and i-pod in german

I am having the exact same problem. My ipod has been stuck in disk mode for over two hours and now itunes is frozen.

Is album artist sort available on iPod classic now?

I'm fairly certain there have been no changes to the classic firmware.
The workaround is to set as a compilation or set a common artist.

160Gb iPod Classic - Coverflow Sort order

I have posted a similar forum topic on iLounge and I am really surprised at the lack of response and given that this issue may/must affect the iPhone and Touch that more people are not discussing it.
My problem is this, I have purchased a 160Gb Classic and have found no way to replicate in iTunes the sort order that Coverflow uses within the iPod.
Some have said that that the iPod coverflow sort order is Album by Artist (separating compilations) but using this method of sorting the coverflow within iTunes although comes close does not replicate what the iPod is doing with it's sorting of coverflow.
So.
Can anyone tell me if anyone / Apple have produced some documentation on how they currently and plan to expose tagging with iPods? I don't mind re-tagging my tracks again if necessary but want to be sure that I am not wasting my time.
Do Apple intend to allow Coverflow to have the sort basis used by Coverflow to be chosen within the iPod? The 'Album Artist' tag would make more sense to me than the current method being used.
The greatest strength that the iPod and iTunes has in my opinion is the ability to sort very large databases of music and allow singular tracks to be found quickly, the issue described above with Coverflow does not mean the end of the world but is concerning that Apple have allowed what appears to be a flawed product and methodology through their usually very high standards.

In iTunes the coverflow view can be reordered by selecting a column heading to sort by - there is no ONE coverflow order. The iPod coverflow view corresponds to the ordering Album by Artist in ascending mode. In addition, the various versions of the firmware up to V1.03 fail to correctly gather albums via the Album Artist field although iTunes does. This can cause duplicate albums to appear when one principal artist has more than one album and some of the tracks feature guest artists. This behaviour can currently be corrected by setting the Sort Artist field in affected tracks to the value of the album's Artist. Hopefully a future firware update will correfct this. Another minor glitch is that the album will be credited to the artists that feature on the first track rather than the Album Artist. (V1.03 corrects this for Compilations only.)
Another bug/feature means that where the same album title is used by more than one artist, both albums will feature all the tracks from both albums and the wrong artwork may be displayed. This also happens in iTunes. The workaround is to give each album a unique title by, for example, appending or prepending the name of the artist.

How is your iPod configured to sync TV Shows? What options do you have enabled from under your iPod's TV Shows configuration tab in iTunes?
No error messsages when you sync your Classic with iTunes? Try resetting all warnings with the device by right->clicking on it from under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes and choosing Reset warnings. Then resync your device to see if any errors appears.

I got a Season Pass for "Chuck", and it says 7 of the episodes are not in a format compatible with my iPod Classic 160GB. Thoughts?

My subject line pretty much says it all. I'm trying to sync season 4, which has 24 episodes. I get this error on 7 of the episodes saying that the video format is not compatible with my iPod Classic.
I have tried restoring my iPod and starting from scratch, but I'm still getting the same error.
I can't imagine Apple is using a different format for different episodes, so there must be a work-around of some kind.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Melissa,
Definitely a little odd that some episodes will sync and others will not, especially since they are from the same season. How the videos were encoded may be slightly difference, so much that your iPod no longer friends them compatible.

Since these are videos that were purchased from the iTunes store, you won't be able to convert them in any way, so you may be out of luck.

How to play only one episode of a podcast on the iPod Classic 120GB?

With my previous iPod-- the 60GB iPod Photo-- I could play only one episode of a podcast. I would scroll to "Podcasts" on the main menu, find the name of the podcast I wanted to hear, click on an episode and only that one would play. If I wanted to listen to all the episodes of that particular podcast, I'd access it through the Playlist feature.
The system above for playing a single episode doesn't seem to work on the iPod Classic 120 GB. All the episodes play no matter how I access the podcast.
What am I overlooking?

Probably not! My 30GB video iPod will only play one Podcast episode at a time and this does not change by using shuffle. I think your 60Gb iPod was the same as the 30GB.
As S_Edwards has posted and as you have found, the Classic does use shuffle to alter the way Podcasts are played. Quite why Apple use shuffle to control single or continuous playing of Podcasts, and then not document it either, is a mystery.
As a useful reminder, while the Podcast is playing, the screen display will show 1 of 1 to denote single-episode mode or 1 of x to denote continuous-episode mode.

Incorrect display iCal calendar events on iPod Classic

I'm the owner of iPod Classic 120Gb with latest firmware (2.0.1)
I synchronise iCal calendars with my iPod Classic.
My events in "iCal" contain much of the text, but iPod Classic can show only little first part of text when i select this events.
I cannot see all text.
It is incorrect
For Example - iPod Nano 4gen can show all text of this events.

They do sync back for me. So, I'm not sure what the problem is. You might try resetting the sync history:

IPod Classic and podcast sorting

Just curious...is there any way to force an iPod classic (or a touch for that matter!) to display podcasts in the order they're published, instead of going from newest to oldest? I'm a bit tired of making custom playlists for my multi-part radio show podcasts every time I want to hear them in order. >.>
Any thoughts? Using latest version of iTunes, latest firmware on my 120 GB classic, and latest 3.1 OS on my touch.

Firmware update v.1.0.3 changed the way TV Episodes are listed on the iPod. They are now listed by Release Date. According to Apple, that is how they were supposed to be listed.
So you have three options:
1. Set up playlists for each of your TV Shows and drag them into them in order.
2. Use a program like Tagger (PC), AtomicParsley (PC & MAC), or Lostify (MAC) to add the release dates to your TV Show files - I recommend using Atomic Parsley with a batch file to add all the dates en-mass, of course you'll either need to use fake dates or look them up on a website like imDB.
3. Ignore the problem and hunt and peck for your TV Shows in correct order in hopes that Apple will change their minds and change it back to the way it was before. I wouldn't recommend this option.

IPod classic 80GB playing just one podcast episode

I upgraded from my Fifth generation iPod and was wondering if it was possible to set my iPod Classic 80GB to play just one podcast episode and then return to the menu? It seems like the default is to move to the next podcast episode after the prior one is finished. Thanks

Yes, turn on shuffle song/albums! I know - that makes no sense
Either:
1. use the Settings menu, go to shuffle and turn it on, or;
2. while playing a song press the select (centre) button until the shuffle option appears and then turn it on.
Then when you play a Podcast the display will show 1 of 1 (instead of the 1 of X that you see now!) and at the end of that one episode, it will stop.
One important thing to note though, there is a shuffle option on the *Main Menu* but if you use that to start shuffle, it will not change the Podcasts to play-one-episode only. (For this reason, I removed the shuffle option from the *Main Menu* .)
I only found this by accident - if it's documented, I can't find it!
