Ipod classic sudden sound distortion from dock connector only

I have an ipod classic 160gb 7th generation.  When I docked it one day the sound was very distorted and unplayable.  This happens in different docking stations yet they play with other ipods.  I can still sync and charge (through some but not all chargers) and can play through headphones.
I have reset, restored, turned the EQ off and still no change.  Any help /advice?  not under warranty
thx

Thanks for your reply
Do you mean take it to a physical store?  The closest one I have is just over an hours drive away, if they'll look at it for me though I guess it's worth it.
Thanks

  • No sound output from dock connector or headphones but speaker is fine

    I've got a 3GS which I've had since October.
Recently, there has been no sound output from the headphone socket - or rather, what does come out is very strange, sounding almost electronically distorted.
I thought that maybe the headphone jack was broken, but now I've found out that the same thing can be heard through a dock when the iPod is connected this way.
I'm fairly sure the dock connector is still fine as the phone charges and can be controlled by the dock etc
Most of the discussions I've found relate to sound not coming from the speaker on the phone, but this is absolutely fine.
    Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
I'm not optimistic that this will help any more than the procedures you've already tried, but it won't hurt to try.
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try booting into OS 9 and see if the problems with the audio are happening there, too. If so, you can bet it's a hardware problem.
How big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If you don't have your OS 9 installation in order to check out whether it's a hardware problem and you have enough available hard drive space, you may want to try an Archive and Install of the OS in order to make sure it isn't an OS X system-wide problem. If that doesn't do it, you could back up your hard drive and restore your software.
All of this may just be spinning your wheels, but it's all stuff you can try before shelling out a lot of money for repairs.

  • IPod classic suddenly stopped connecting to docks

Bit of a strange one this. All has been fine for ~2years until recently when my ipod, for no particular reason, was no longer being detected by the iPod docks in the house or my car (all of which worked fine with it until recently). It's still completely fine for headphone and PC connection - a couple of the docks will play music but I'm unable to use the controller for them - I have to stand up and go choose the song on the iPod itself, which makes one of the best things about having a proper dock redundant. It doesn't work at all in the car. I've tested other people's iPods/iPhones and they all work fine. Software is up to date too. Any suggestions?

As  far as I'm aware, there have not been any updates to any of the iPod Classics (different versions of the software) for a long time, so the problem has not been caused by an update.
That being the case, it should be possible to get the ipod working with these docks and your car once again. To that end, I suggest that you try a Reset of the iPod first, which does not remove any of the media. To Reset an iPod, turn the Hold switch on, then off again and then press-and-hold the Menu and the Select (centre) buttons for at least ten seconds or until the Apple logo appears. That signifies that the Reset has started.
If that doesn't sort it out, then I can only suggest that you try a Restore. A Restore is far more drastic - you do it by selecting the Restore button in iTunes (It's on the Device/Summary pane that shows up when the iPod is connected. But you should note that a Restore will remove all the media from the iPod and then put back onto it  only what is in your iTunes Library. So if you have media on the iPod that is not in your Library, it will be lost.
If neihter of those steps fixes it, I don't know what else to suggest.

  • Using iPod Classic (80GB) with a Firewire dock

I gave my daughter a new 80GB iPod Classic to replace her 2003 era iPod 15GB, dock connector (with the 4 buttons). Her 12" PowerBook G4 doesn't have USB2, so I was wondering if it is safe to use her old Firewire docking station with the new iPod Classic? I would assume so for two reasons: 1) the dock connector is mechanically the same and 2) I have read that the iPod Classic will still charge from the Firewire power pins. Is this correct? I'd rather she not blow it up right out of the box.

You will be able to use it to charge and output audio through the dock's out port, but that's it. It will not connect to the mac via firewire at all.
An iPod classic can be connected to USB 1.1 but it may or may not sync at all and if it does, it will be painfully, hopelessly slow. You may want to consider syncing the iPod with a different mac... you can use a Firewire hard drive or Target Disk Mode to transfer or copy her library to another machine.
On the upshot, a new aluminum Macbook is expected to hit the market in time for Christmas...

  • Nano reboots itself everytime I attach it to/remove it from dock connector

I've had my 16 GB 4G Nano since January, and only in the last 4 weeks or so it has been rebooting itself everytime I connect or disconnect it from 2 docking ports:
the LG LDF750 micro home stereo & the Sony ICF-C1IPMK2 Speaker System and Clock Radio
The Nano would reboot itself to the black screen with the Apple logo, and I would lose my menu settings. I don't know if it's caused by static, or a software upgrade from iTunes, and I don't know if there's any long-term damage. I never had this problem before when I had a 6G Classic. I did a firmware restore about 6 times, and that did not solve the problem.
Any help would be appreciated; thanks!

After almost 2 months of the constant rebooting, I finally took the Nano back to the Apple store a few days ago, as it was still under warranty. The clerk ran a diagnostic software on it, and found out that it wasn't holding its charge. He said it may or may not have anything to do with the iPod rebooting, but it was serious enough that it warranted a replacement. I ended up getting it exchanged; so far the new replacement iPod is working beautifully with my dock connectors.

  • HT1384 iPod Classic will not charge from wall outlet

My iPod Classic 80G will charge from my computers and my iHome dock, but not from the wall outlet. The cord, outlet, and adapter all work. We know the regular adapter works, it's an Apple universal USB to wall adapter that charges our iPad. We tried other cords (have two), other outlets, and even my kindle 2-prong adapter. Nothing worked. Suggestions?

    Hello there, Anhaja.
First off, great job in your isolating steps performed already. One step that wasn't mentioned is found in the following Knowledge Base article:
    How to reset iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
    For your particular model:
How to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • How do you transfer songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer? The only songs that transfer are those that I purchased on iTunes. Is there a 3rd party website or something?

I am trying to transfer 3000 songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer. The only songs that transfer are those that I have purchased on iTunes (242 songs). You need a third-party program like the paid PhoneView or TouchCopy. The free iFunBox may work.

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Featurs appin the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components

May try DIY due to cost
Just wondering if anyone's had this fixed how much it costs
Or if it's another problem before I order parts

I have found the solution for myself for the above.  I use a specific scripting program which is accessed by Control A. To pause it, you need to use Control B. not sure if this would work for any other application but it resolves my dilemma after hours of trying!
