IPod Classic updating ratings and not play counts in iTunes

I am currently using an iPod classic purchased in 2010 with iTunes 10.5.3.3.  however I encountered the same issue on 10.6.1 which made me think that if I downgraded that it would solve my problem but it hasn't.
Here is my problem. Over the past two weeks, I noticed that when I synched my  iPod my recenlty played playlist number went from 835 to 720. I typically listen to over  fifty songs throughout the course of the day. I have playlist set up to select songs based on a last played date. Last played not in the last 14 days. I last synched my iPod yesterday and I recently setup a new library that is less than 2 weeks old.
On the iPod everything was working fine. When I synched the iPod I noticed that the playlist reverted back to yesterday's status and that my ratings had changed but not the last played date and play counts did not update. Hence breaking the smart playlist functionality of Top 25 Most Played and any other playlist based on play counts. Also my podcasts are not updating as well. I listened to a podcast today and it is still showing up as new after syncing with iTunes.
I noticed that if I do a hard reset (Menu+center button) and resync then the playlist update from the point of the last. I have not encountered this problem until upgrading to 10.6.1.
I even went has far as deleting the itl files and letting iTunes create them again based off the XML and still the problem persists. I even created a new library and added new songs and the problem persist.
I would like to know a good way to getting the sync functionality to work properly and not just sync my ratings. Has anybody encountered this problem?

The rules for my recently played list is as follows:
Last Played is in the last 2 weeks
Kind does not contain video
Live updating
Oh and I forgot the Match all is checked.
I have changed my playlist from Apple's default playlist of:
Match all
Last Played is in the last 2 weeks
Media Kind is not Podcast
I have found that Media Kind balloon breaks live updating on iPod Classics but the Kind or Genre balloon does not. In the past I could go two to three weeks without syncing as I have over 100 Gigs of music and sometimes could go into recently played to find a song quicker because it would be at the top. Now that isn't the case.  Most of my smart playlist start with Last Played is not with a certain range so I can listen to new songs and I rate songs as I play them so I can get rid of 1 & 2 star songs off my library at a later date. However when I sync my device the songs reappear  on certain smart playlist with no play counts but updated ratings. Like Mix Rap or 4&5 star unplayed.
For example, Mix: Rap
Match all is checked
Last Played is not in the last 14 days
Last Skipped is not in the last 7 days
Rating is not 1 star
Rating is not 2 star
any
Genre contains Hip-Hop
Genre contains Rap
Limit to 25 items Random
Live updating
I am going by the recently played list because I wiped the entire library as of April 3, 2012 so everything I play is still within the two week window. I have a few other playlist that are not updating after syncing. Meaning they are updating on the device and revert after syncing with iTunes.
After writing my post last night I did a clean install of 10.6.1.7. By clean install I mean I deleted all information from my Users\AppData folder related to Apple Computer in Local, Roaming, and LocalLow. I also deleted my .itl, itdb, and sentinel files and imported my Library xml file. I also performed a super fix on my iPod classic as well.  I played a few songs last night and they seem to be running fine. But that's how it always starts out.
Any feedback would be helpful....Thanks for the response turingtest2 by the way

  • My ipod classic 5th generation is not playing any kind of audio. i tried resetting it and i used multiple speakers/ear buds. nothing worked. do you have any other suggestions?

My ipod classic (5th generation) is not playing any audio. when i play a song the little picture of the album cover comes up and the seconds clock and the blue line come up and change/move, but there is no sound. i have tried multiple speakers/ear buds and i have tried to reset it but notheing worked.
    What should i do?

Assuming that you actually have the volume turned up (you don't say that you have, after all), make sure that the Volume Limit is not turned all the way down.
Look in the Settings/Volume Limit menu. The small arrow controls the volume as well.

  • I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes.

I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes and i am unable to format it even though it says i must if i want it to appear on itunes. It does'nt work on any computer so its not the usb. ive reset it a few times but no luck. Any ideas?
Here is some of the info i got, im not sure however what they represent.
    Retracts: 534
    Reallocs: 216
    Pending Sector: 62
    PowerOn: 1253
    Smart/Stop: 469
    Temp:Current 27c
    Temp:Min 5c
    Temp:Max 56c

If Windows or Mac can recognise it, then reformat it using a Hardisk Partition tool, if not, it is time to replace the Hardisk.
The High Pending Number, indicates some bad cluster, which Hardisk firmware can't reallocate or remapped. This maybe due to, leaving the iPod in a Hot environment, damaging the Hardisk.

  • Ratings and "last played" disappear in iTunes.

Having switched to Vista, a new problem is crippling my iPod use. When I connect it to iTunes, the ratings and "last played" data sometimes appear and sometimes they don't. I'm used to erratic behavior from iTunes, but this critical to me.
I'll explain why. As you know, it's extremely difficult to use the iPod---since there's no directory structure, it's hard to find anything. I can sort of get around this by creating playlists for each artist. It's still impossible to see what albums are what without playing something, but at least it's workable. After I listen to something, I like to delete it to make room for more. Again, this is a simple function that iTunes/iPod makes very difficult. My workaround has been to mark the last track I listen to in a playlist with a rating (I find the ratings feature otherwise useless). That way, when I connect to iTunes, I can find which tracks I've listened to and delete them. Now that ratings sometimes disappear, the iPod has gone from almost impossible to use to completely frustrating. What is the solution?

"If nothing is tagged correctly, then you are correct. Otherwise, it's very easy to find any track by Artist, Album, Genre or song name."
If everything is tagged correctly (which is true of 99% of my collection), it's still very difficult to find anything on an iPod, for the reasons I explained above. I'll give you an example. Starting with a perfectly tagged collection of J.S. Bach's complete works, how do I find BWV 972? You would have me go to Artists ->. Then I have to scroll through a few hundred, not to find "Bach, Johann Sebastian", but to find "Johann...". Fine, once there, I have about 1000 "Albums" for my scrolling pleasure. Where is it? On my hard drive, it's in its place between 971 and 973 (exactly where I would want it to play). Not on the iPod. On the iPod, it's in the order that the iPod chooses. Should I look under Harpsichord Concertos or under Concertos for harpsichord? More scrolling. Ahhh---but no amount of scrolling will do any good. Only the first few characters of the title are displayed, and catalog numbers are at the ends. It's one of many "Harpsichord Conce...". The designers didn't even think about wrapping lines---that's how bad it is. No doubt you've noticed by now that 972 can't be found even if you try each one, one-by-one. It's a transcription, so the iPod considers it a different "artist". The situation is the same for pop albums, or any other genre. I want to hear them in chronological order? Impossible! iPod/iTunes can't even read well-formed year tags. It's 2009 and it can't do what a hundred freeware/shareware programs have been doing for years.
The whole system is a bad first draft, and will remain that way, since there's no incentive for Apple to design a workable system. That's not my point though. That's not my question. I've developed a cumbersome work-around that depends on iTunes seeing the ratings I record on the iPod. Now that iTunes has decided to erase these sometimes, intermittently, for no reason, I need to know how to make it not do that. I need to know how to ensure that iTunes sees the little ratings stars that I've set on the iPod.
Katrina says that to do this, I have to set up auto-sync. In other words, I have to waste 80 GB of hard disk space to duplicate whatever I want on the iPod's drive. That figures! Is there any other way? And, by the way, how do you erase things from your iPod when you're done with them? And, come to think of it, there seems to be no pattern how or why podcasts are updated, automatically discarded, never discarded, or automatically download repeatedly after they've been manually discarded---I'm sure I'll never get any satisfaction on that issue, though!

"iPod software update server could not be contacted. The Server does not support this version of iTunes." iPod will not turn on or charge or reset settings. I tried plugging it in my laptop, house computer and docking station to charge and nothing. Also, I have all the latest software updates to my knowledge. This is a classic 8GB iPod, running of Windows 7. Any thoughts/suggestions?

  • I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

My ipod needs to be restore and I get a error message saying :ipod software update server coud not be contacted.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • My IPOD Classic 160GB is now not recognized by iTunes and will not sync

I have a 160GB IPOD Classic that now will not sync with iTunes. Both the iPod and iTunes have up to date software versions and I am connecting thru a MAcBook Pro running OS X 10.10.2. I have synced this iPod i the past with no problems and now it does not appear in the iTunes source list.
I have tried the rest options that the Troubleshooting guide suggested and now at a loss for the next step.

This is a problem caused by 10.10.2, only way to fix it at the moment is to revert to 10.10.1.
Quite a few threads on it on other sites and only that one solution. Make sure you raise a feedback to apple though.

Hello. I have an ipod classic generation 4 and I want to add some more music to it however my computer and itunes do not recognise the device when I try to connect it. Is it incompatible with windows 7 or current version of itunes?

It should still be compatible.  Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port using a different cable to see if that helps?  Perhaps, try it another computer as well to see if it's recognized there.
Otherwise, start by checking to see if it's even recognized in Device Manager.  See this article for details.

My daughter forgot her passcode.  Her iPod Touch 4gen is disabled.  I've tried everything I've read online.  I get to the "Restore" part on iTunes and then I get the message, "The iPod Software update server could not be contacted.  Make sure your network connections are correct and your network connection is active or try again later."  How can this be so hard to do?  Why isn't there a simpler solution.  I live 2 hours from the nearest Apple store.  Any advice you may offer would be very much appreciated.

  • I've forgotten my passcode and when trying to restore it I get "The iPod software update server could not be contacted"

I recently had my iPhone taken away from over-use so I thought I'd just use my iPod I haven't used in forever, when turning it on it said locked for 21 million minutes, so I checked out few videos, fix it on iTunes, and when I could access my iPod, my mind went complelty blank, so I checked out so more videos on what to do when fogetting your passcode, and I found you had to restore your iPod, which was fine by me because, I have maybe an app or two on it, so wiping everything out wouldn't be anything.. But, when I go to restore my iPod I get, like in the title, "The iPod software update server could not be contacted" any ideas on what to do?
