Ipod Classic Wiped, Any Advice ?

Last week my Ipod classic wiped itself. This occured after I had tried to listen to a podcast where it kept freezing. Confusingly although the Ipod says that there is no music/video/podcasts on there it states that it has 7.9 GB of memory used. Thinking back it has been acting oddly over the last few months somethimes podcasts would suddenly stop and return to the menu when I hadn't pushed any buttons (or at least I thought I hadn't) and on a least one other occasion it had wiped itself (although reconnecting it to my computer quickly resoved that). I have had this Ipod for slightly over 2 years (I bought it in August 2009), so is there anything that can be done to save it ?

Sounds like it may need a Restore.

  • Just got new PC with Picasa 3 but worried it might not be compatible with my photos previously synced to ipod-classic.  Any advice?

Just got a new PC (Windows 7 with Picasa 3 installed).  Not used Picasa before & worried this might not be compatible with i-tunes if I connect my ipod-classic.  Have reinstalled i-tunes on new PC but scared that all my existing photo files on the ipod might not stay the same if I connect the ipod to the PC.  Any advice please?

I know that they are on my computer. I'm saying, they're in ONE folder titled "iPhone" with separate folders in it titled by the dates the photos were added. I put them ALL in one folder thinking that the photos were listed in chronological order, not starting from 001 for each folder, and not there are duplicates, not of the pictures, but of the names. Ex. There's a picture of me titled 001.jpg and another of a friend titled 001 (1).jpg. See what I'm saying?
If I were to do backup, which I do not know how to do, I think it'd backup from THAT location where all my photos sync when I plug in my iPhone and the dialog box pops up. I'm not trying to get the pictures back onto my phone, I just want to make a 'backup' of ALL of them, at once, to replace the other folder with the duplicates, on my PC.

  • CAN I CONNECT MY IPOD CLASSIC TO ANY COMPUTER AND UPDATE ANY MUSIC THAT I HAVE PURCHASED FROM ITUNES ON MY IPAD?

CAN I CONNECT MY IPOD CLASSIC TO ANY COMPUTER AND UPDATE ANY MUSIC THAT I HAVE PURCHASED FROM ITUNES ON MY IPAD?

Plug the iPod into the new computer.  When it pops up on the left sidebar, right-click on the iPod and select "Transfer Purchases".  Make sure that you Authorize the computer to play content purchased with that account, or else the music will not play.

  • IPod Classic wiped itself & is no longer recognised in iTunes

iPod Classic, 80GB, from Dec 2007.
Plugged iPod in to laptop as normal (Acer Aspire 7730ZG, using WIN7 Ultimate at the time) & tried to add an album. Process froze & iPod would not update. It would not respond within iTunes, so I manually ejected via Windows. Upon ejection, the iPod reset itself & wiped all content & settings.
Since then, the iPod is not recognised by iTunes & is inaccessible. The iPod is recognised as a device in Windows, but I cannot format it or run any diagnostics via Properties. Each time I eject the iPod it resets itself as well.
I have tried various solutions that have previously been posted, but no luck so far. iPod can be put in Disk Mode, but just sits at 'Do not disconnect' (again, is recognised by Windows as a removable device).
iPod diagnostics gives me the following:
    Retracts: 201
    Reallocs: 4
    Pending Sectors: 6
    PowerOn Hours: 1007
    Start/Stops: 167
    Temp: Current 31c
    Temp: Min 12c
    Temp: Max 47c
    Any advice/help is much appreciated!

Hmm. I was having problems with one of my iPods recently that in the past I've fixed by simply wiping the hard drive. The DFU restore worked quickly for me once I was told about it but prior to that I had reformatted the drive using EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition (Free). Perhaps that had some useful effects after all. It may also be a good idea to disable any real-time anti-virus products while you do the update in case they are interfering with the process.

  • Using iPod classic (or any iPod) as OSX startup disc?

    hi there
does anybody know whether it is possible to use an iPod classic (i have the 160GB) as a startup disc (emergency startup disc) for any mac computer (ie. mac mini or MBP)?
i already use an external 500 GB disc via USB, which works well, though very very slow. so i thought this should work with an iPod too, once activating the "use as volume" option. true?
    thanks and cheers
    george

    hi niel
thanks for your post. clear. i was actually less thinking about running a mac then from the iPod but just having a better option (with some own system settings) than just a startup CD in case of troubles.
i don't really get though why this should overheat the iPod as when you use it as simple sound player it is also accessing the hard disk constantly. don't see much difference there. however, i have no warranty left and my previous iPod died a few weeks after the warranty expired. murphy's law.
right now i am using the USB 500GB external hard drive as startup disk with a new mac mini because my MPB is broken and i had to send it to repair, so the easiest way which would allow me to use all my data (and the HD in the MBP is a 500 GB, but in the mac mini only 320) was to take the original HD out of the MBP and purchase a case and this way i can use it from any mac. i purchased another 500GB disk and copied all the data on it and placed it in the MBP before i sent it to fix. the problem is most likely hard ware related and i hope to get it back soon to be able to work with speed again...
by the way, the original MBP hard disk which i use now as an external gets way less hot now than it used to be when in the MBP.
this just to explain you why i always like to have one more copy of my settings somewhere and ideally as a startup drive, and since my iPod is not full...
thanks again for your post. highly appreciated.
    cheers

  • ITunes (and other programs) unable to recognize the contents of my iPod classic. Help/advice?

Recently the hard drive of my macbook failed, causing me to lose all of the contents on it - including my music. It wasn't of too major concern for me considering I have my iPod and have ripped music from it to iTunes before. Alas when I attempted to do so today neither iTunes nor any other iPod transfer program (senuti, phone to mac, irip) can recognize it. The music is still on there and I can still listen to it, I just am unable to access it on my computer apparently. Is there any manual way to move the files? iTunes continues to suggest I restore my iPod, but I really don't want to lose the almost 3000 songs I have collected over the last 5 years. Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!

Nevermind! I rebooted my iPod and my computer recognized it! Whew!

  • IPod Classic Unknown error 53

I keep running into this error (-53) when loading music or movies onto my iPod Classic.  Any ideas? I have reset the iPod 3 times and still continue to have issues

This maybe due to USB transfer timeout by iTunes waiting for a task complete signal, which did not come.
While syncing your iPod, I would suggest the following to prevent timeouts.
Disconnect all other USB devices, except mouse and keyboard.
connect only to USB 2.0 port at the back of the Desktop, and if you are using a Mac dont  connect to the keyboard USB port.
    Dont connect to USB Hub.
Disconnect from Internet, so dont use twitter or facebook are other apps, which has plugins that conflict with iTunes.
    Stop the Antivirus if any.
Try to sync in small batches first.
    Have a nice day!

  • ITunes 7.7 Update and iPod classic = Spinning Beach Ball

Just upgraded to the new iTunes 7.7 (iphone 2.0 and app store support). After, I plugged in my ipod classic and it took almost 5 minutes of the "spinning beach ball" to recognize the ipod. I check and it says my software (1.1.2) is up to date. I ejected and tried it again. Same thing. Once recognized, the ipod classic seems to work fine in iTunes, but still not sure about all options.
Anyone else upgrade iTunes and find the same thing happening?
Note: No option to sync ipod classic games any more. A new "Applications" designation listed in iTunes 7.7 (which has my purchased games listed), but no way to "sync" them or resync them if there were to be an issue or if I wanted to remove the game now and sync it again later...

I'm having the same problem. Last night I wanted to update my iPhone to 2.0 so I had to update iTunes first. When I connect my iPhone, everything works fine (thank God). But quite a different story when I connected my 80 GB classic today. Spinning beachball, iPod icon appears on desktop and in Finder, but iTunes does not show my iPod.
I've tried everything I can think of from resetting my iPod to reinstalling iTunes. Nothing has worked for me.
Is there no fix to this yet? Has anyone solved the problem? Are we suppose to wait for Apple to solve this problem?

  • Ipod Classic 120gb inbuilt recording capabilities

I have had my Ipod classic 120gb for about 4 years. Although I am aware that it had the capcaity to record when used with an external mic, I found that I was actually able to use it to record without such equipment before. About a year ago, there was an update automatically downloaded from itunes to my ipod, this update meant that I could record voice notes on my ipod without using any mic attachment or anything at all. I was simply using my ipod as I always had, including normal headphones. I must admit I thought it was strange at that time as there is recording input point visable on the device, but since it worked I didn't questionit any further. On the ipod main screen a recording option appeared in the main menu and I could view and playback waht I had recorded. The problem is that this option disappeared and reappeared for about 2 months before totally disappearing. Now I can no longer access the option and I'm wondering whether anyone else experienced this? i.e. was able to record on the ipod classic without any need for any accessories?
If so, it would be interesting to know if apple just accidently allowed the update, and took it away when they realised the mistake so that people could buy the recording accessories instead?

Well either way, there is no MIC hardware in an iPod classic, unless somehow it was modified, which is very unlikely. Why not bring it to an Apple store an see what they have to say?

  • IPod classic formated for MAc and Windows

    Hello
I have a problem with my iPod classic. I use both Windows and Mac platforms and have iTunes library on both. Or course i would like to use my iPod with both as well. But each time i connect my iPod classic th any of the computers it asks me to restore the settings i.e. format it to either Mac or Windows. Does anyone now how to go around that problem, how to set it to work with both platforms?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem.. I have a normal iPod, and I originally used it on my PC. I recently got an iMac and now iTunes says that "..Windows formatted iPod's cannot be updated on Macintosh computers.." or something very similar to that..
Any tips/ideas?? Would be greatly appreciated.
BTW.. I still have the PC, but would just prefer to control my iPod from the Mac.
    Thanks =]
[edit] Ahh, have read another post about this. So if I restore my iPod, will the music be transferred automatically or do I have do do something else for that?? [/edit]

  • I've Now Killed 2 160GB iPod Classics with My Music Library

I've now tried to load my complete iTunes library onto an iPod classic twice, and both times, once the complete library is loaded, the Apple boot screen appears and the hard drive spins until the battery goes dead.
Today, I took the first one into the Apple Store, and the guy working at the Genius Bar had no idea what had happened. Using his diagnostic tools, he attempted to get beyond the boot screen, but he was unable to break the the infinite loop. He figured it was a bad iPod, and gave me a new one on the spot.
I brought the new one home, and I hooked it up to my computer. Setup and registration went fine. So I tried transferring just my purchased music, ejecting, and checking the iPod. That worked fine. So I added my videos (7GB). Again, no problem. Then I added the podcasts. Check.
So I went back to the Music tab, and had it sync all my songs and playlists. It took almost 5 hours, and everything appeared to be working fine. But when I went to eject the iPod, the Eject screen would not disappear. After 45 minutes, out of frustration, I removed the USB cable from the iPod. After another 15 minutes of the Eject screen, I tried to reset the iPod. And when I did, I got the Apple boot screen.
After almost 3 hours of the hard drive spinning, the Apple screen is still there. And it will be there until the battery dies. And if I charge the battery, the hard drive will keep spinning until it kills that charge. Two attempts to sync my complete music library, two bricked iPod Classics.
Any clues as to why my music library is killing iPods? Has anybody else with a 100+GB collection had luck syncing the library using a Windows box? Can anybody help me??
I really want to enjoy my complete library and all the new functionality, but if this happens again, I'm going to eat the restocking fee and just wait until either Apple figures out what's going on and fixes it on the iPod or tells me how to fix my iTunes library (or my computer) so this stops happening.

I just upgraded to an iPod Classic 160. I have experienced 2 problems, but not with album art.
First, iTunes is very slow. It seems to freeze for minutes at a time when performing any operations on it.
Secondly, I have a lot of Podcasts - both video and audio.
I can download them with no problem. I can see them in the contents pane in iTunes for my computer. I can play them in iTunes and I can sync them with my new iPod (apparently).
However, they do NOT show up on my iPod. The new contents screen shows No Podcasts. When I do a search for them they show up as songs and I can heard the video podcast soundtracks.
In iTunes with my iPod connected they show up under both the iTunes directory and in the iPod Directory immediately after syncing. However, if I eject and then reconnect the iPod, upon reconnection they no longer show up in iTunes in the iPod directory.
I am assuming this is a bug with either iTunes 7.4.x in the way it categorizes Podcasts or it is an OS issue with the iPod. I have the latest versions of iTunes, the latest SW and Firmware updates for the iPod and have rebooted to assure that the latest versions are the ones running.
Anyone else experience these? Anyone find solutions?
    Thanks.

  • Importing playlists to a ipod classic using itunes 12

created a playlist but cannot import to my ipod classic. Any ideas?
    Thanks

If you set up automatic syncing, you can select that playlist as one of the items being synced.  Select iPod in iTunes 12 (click device button), so that you see the iPod's "management" screen.  In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right, check the box for Sync Music, near the top.  NOTE:  If that box was not already checked, you have been using the Manually manage music [and videos] setting.  Checking that box enables automatic syncing instead.  The iPod's current content will be replaced by the content you select on the iPod's Music settings screen.  Any songs on the iPod that are not in your computer's iTunes library will be lost.  If this is a problem, don't do it this way; see below for the manual method.
Below the Sync Music setting, select the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, under Playlists, find and select (checkmark) that playlist you created for the iPod.  You can also select other items on those lists.  When you click Apply, the songs in your selection syncs to the iPod (replacing its current content).  Going forward, to update that playlist on the iPod, just update that playlist in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The iPod does not need to be connected.  The next time it is connected (or you click Sync if already connected), iTunes updates the iPod with the same changes.
If you don't want set up automatic syncing, this is how to add a playlist to the iPod using the manual method (the iPod is set to Manually manage music [and videos]).  You don't actually add an existing playlist to the iPod.  You create the playlist on the iPod manually, and add songs to it manually.  In iTunes 12, click the Music button on the horizontal bar (near left side).  Near middle of that bar, click Playlists.  The sidebar appears along left side of window, showing your music library, devices, and playlists.  If your iPod is connected, it appears under Devices.  Click the small triangle to left of iPod's name, to drop down its content list (indented below iPod).  Click Music on content list.  At bottom of sidebar, click the plus sign, and select New Playlist.  A new playlist appears on the iPod (on the content list), which you can name.
If you already have a playlist with songs you want on the iPod in your iTunes library, select it in the sidebar under Playlists.  Select any song on the list, and do a Select All (from the Edit menu or Cmd-A on keyboard).  Drag selection to iPod in sidebar to the playlist, and drop it there.  Change the order of songs, as desired.  The songs will be on the iPod "generally," but you can also play them using the playlist.  Going forward, manually update that playlist on the iPod, as desired.

Yes. A few $/£ should get you a compatible battery and the tools to do the job. It is a little fiddly, but I've done several. Video tutorials are online.
