Ipod Classic won't sync and freezes while trying

Originally i had a video on my ipod that wouldn't play, id get the puzzle piece screen so I figured id sync my ipod and delete the video and reenter it in my itunes. I plugged in my ipod and a message poped up saying error and that I would have to restore my ipod. I try restoring it, hoping that fix the problem, but when my ipod got to the second to last file syncing, my ipod started to click and it stopped syncing. My laptop still said syncing but the bar wouldn't increase but the ipod only said "connected" now. I tried this at least five times with similar results, the last try being the same as the one I just mentioned. Is there anything I can do to fix my ipod, could I have a bad sector on the HDD, or should I take it to the Apple store and have it assessed? I'm hoping to not have to buy another ipod so any help will be much appreciated.
Thank you

Unfortunately a clicking sound on a iPod Classic, video or "brick" style appearance iPod is not a good thing... That clicking is usually the Hard Drive acting up and usually doing some very strange things.
I would do the following... Try using the restore option in iTunes if you can talk to it... If not you can TRY to reset it (at your own discression) and then try doing a restore and seeing how that goes.
If you can get it back up then try syncing the item... However if this is a single video, have you tried viewing it through iTunes? Do you know if it is good? As it sounds like it did something to the device, and the pause corrupted the index and thus the restore but now you sound like your in a worse state.
Additionally how big was the video file? I'm wondering if it was too large for some reason...

  • IPod Classic won't Restore and FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES! Help.

    Hi. First, the specifics:
I have an iPOD Classic (120GB).
    I have Windows Vista R2 (64-bit).
I have the latest version of iTunes, yes, for 64-bit.
With that out of the way, I started seeing issues with my iPod not being able to play certain songs. I'd find the song, hit the play arrow, nothing would happen. The time would not move, song would not play. Here's what I've tried to do initially:
    Re-install iTunes, re-sync.
Still wouldn't play these songs.. Not all, but many songs.
    So, I tried to Restore.
Initially, it looked like it was restoring properly - - but took way longer than usual. Like 2 hours. At the end, I got an error "Could not sync this song, Could not sync iPod."
I looked at iPod, had to set it up, choose ENGLISH as language, etc.  Search iPod, found NO MUSIC, NO VIDEOS, etc.
    Tried simply re-syncing, wouldn't work.
So, I disconnected, restarted my computer and tried to RESTORE again.
I connect it via a USB 2.0 and the iPod cable. I have been doing this for years and years and this iPod has worked for the 3 years I have had it.
I have had iPod since their inception, so I'm not a rookie. I also have an iPhone and an iPad2.
So I connect the iPod as usual. NOW, it basically FREEZES iTunes. I CONTL-ALT-DEL and find it's always iTunes (NOT RESPONDING).
This happens EVERY TIME... I tried restarting several times, same issue.
So, I unistalled all components of iTunes > RESTART COMPUTER.
I re-download the latest version of iTunes, yes the correct one.
I tried syncing or restoring. DOESN'T RECOGNIZE iPOD, FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES.
HERE'S OTHER THINGS I have tried:
RESTORING from DISK MODE. (DID NOT WORK, LOCKS iTUNES)
I downloaded the Windows Update for Vista that helps not corrupt iPod when disconnecting too early.
Downloaded update, did NOT help with the issue.
Un-installed iTunes again. Restarted computer. Re-installed newest version of iTunes.
ONE THING TO POINT OUT, when I connect my iPod, iTunes launches if not open and I get a WINDOWS box that says:
    MICROSOFT WINDOWS:
Do You Want To Scan And Fix Errors on Steven's iPod (L:) ??
I tried both options: YES, Try to Fix, NO - Continue
That doesn't work, and iTunes still freezes regardless of option.
Again, tried DISK MODE, tried Regular mode...
    Nothing works...
    PLEASE HELP...

Guys, if you all having the same problem as Steven, then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.
Main cause is the iPod Hardisk is dying, but if the DD report are good, then it is the USB connection timeout.
So have a go at the Disk Diagnostic first.

  • IPod Classic won't sync and crashes iTunes. Suggestions?

Hi, hopefully someone can help me!
I have a 80GB iPod classic for 3/4 years, never had any syncing issues until now that weren't fixable by a reset.
However a few days ago I was at my parents' house and charged my iPod using their computer. The first time there was the standard message "This iPod is synced with another library" etc etc but subsequently it crashed iTunes. It was recognised by the computer as a portable media device, all the normal folders were there etc.
Now that I'm with my regular laptop, I'm having the same issues but have realised that the iPod won't sync. It crashes iTunes when it's connected and when I disconnect the iPod, should iTunes works but it displays the message: "The iPod cannot be synced. The required folder could not be found"
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I've tried updated my iTunes software and resetting the iPod (pushing menu and centre), but neither has had an effect.
Edit: I should add that since charging the iPod on the other computer, I have also had issues with the click wheel, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
    Thanks in advance!

same has happened to me,  on and off,   for the last 6 months.   Its an issue with the Mavericks system and ipod classics.    works great for a while -  then one day for no reason - erases the entire iPod.   some days the copmputer will not recognize the iPod and you have to start over.  Apple will tell you that "you" may have a disc problem in the device.  that is all the help I have received.

  • IPod Classic won't sync to PC

My iPod Classic won't sync with iTunes on  my PC. An error message is received stating that there is not enough memory available to sync, but I have 101 GB free on the iPod. I'm using iTunes Version 10.6.3.25 on a PC with the Vista operating system. The iPod operating system is 2.0.1 PC.

It sounds like your PC may be too low on memory (RAM) or Hard Drive in for the iPod to sync properly with iTunes.  Try rebooting your PC to see if that helps.  Then run only iTunes and try to resync your iPod.

  • IPod classic won't sync to iTunes

So I recently found my iPod classic (the newest generation) and everytime I plug it into my Macbook Pro, the device shows up, but then iTunes just gets stuck on "Verifying iPod" and freezes iTunes until I have to force quit or unplug my iPod and then everything is fine. It won't even let me get to the device page of the iPod. I have tried restarting it, but it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

    Hey krajuicy,
Thanks for the question. If you are having issues with your iPod, you may want to attempt the steps outlined in the following assistant:

  • IPod won't sync and freezes iTunes

I am no novice user. I have an iPod Classic 120 GB. I had my iPod in disc mode and updated 1 song and shutdown the computer without ejecting the iPod first. Now all the songs disappeared. I tried to reconnect the iPod but everytime I plug it in iTunes freezes. It will sync a few hundred songs and then just stick on one for hours. I have 41 on there right now.
I've tried reformatting in Windows, but it fails. I tried doing Quick Format and that works. Every time I open iTunes it says you need to restore your iPod. So I restore it and it says everything is fine. It tries to sync the iPod and freezes again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I've checked "sync only checked songs" and selected about 150 to do. I've reset the iPod multiple times (by holding center button and Menu). Nothing works.
I've searched the Internet for the passed 2 days looking over every topic I can find. I need help.

Here's a little update. I had tried a quick format again. iTunes restored the iPod and I had the options to manually manage music. I dragged about 100 songs at a time to the iPod and it sent them. I ejected the iPod after the first couple hundred and they were there. I plugged it back into iTunes and did about 300 more. I had a total of 500 songs. I finished syncing and didn't freeze. I ejected the iPod no problem. After it said OK to disconnect I look through the songs and it says 0 songs. Now it's freezing up iTunes again. >:(

  • IPod Classic won't sync to new computer and repeatedly connects and disconnects

i have recently been issued a new laptop (lenovo thinkpad X230i, windows 7) and want to sync my existing iPod Classic to it. i set up iTunes (11) without any problems, however my ipod t appear in My Computer or in my iTunes library.
I've tried everything suggested in 'iPod troubleshooting' but nothing seems to work.
also when i plugged it into my old computer, to which my ipod is currently synced, an error message appeared saying that 'a file could not be found', the iPod also repeatedly connects and disconnects.
if anyone has had the same problem or has some advice it would be greatly appreciated!

  • IPod classic won't sync, doesn't go into disk mode what do I do next?

Here we go, another iPod classic problem.  A few days ago I noticed a lag while going through my artists list.  Went home, tried to sync, iTunes said I had a corrupted file please restore.  Not the first time this has happened so I thought it would be an easy fix.  Nope.  Restore didn't happen.  Now my classic doesn't turn on unless plugged in to my PC.   Went through the motions for everything Apple reccomends, nothing.  The screen looks like it's in disk mode, but doesn't say disk mode on it.  It won't go into disk mode, so I can't reformat it on Win 7.  Shows up in windows as removeable drive but does not show up in iTunes so I can't change settings or do another restore.

Main Issue: Short; in disk mode all I get is a screen that says "Okay to disconnect" with a check mark
In Disc mode, yes that is all you see on the Ipod Screen, as the iPod becomes an external hardisk and not a media player with Menu. I's main function is to store files to/from the Mac.
Hard reset (using the menu and middle buttons
Reset the iPod - you ust press the Menu and center button for about 10 secs till the logo comes ON.
I need to be able to put in disc mode to at least run diagnostics on it and can't even do that.
If you want to go into disk Diagnostic, read  this excellent post from tt2.

Today, the ipod is not even being recognized by the computer to say that it's there. There is no "connecting" screen, not even a charging symbol.
*Exception: It will charge when hooked up to a charger in an outlet which leads me to believe it's a software issue in the ipod.
You can try all the above, but you should know that when connecting the iPod to a Mac, do not use the Keyboard USB port, or any USB Hub. if you are using a Macbook Pro, only one USB port can be use for the iPod, the other one is not a high Power USB 2.0 port, which shared the Internal bus with iSight and other IO devices like Mouse, infraRed, Bluetooth etc.
So take a look at your Mac user manual and see which USB port to use.
    Have a nice day!

  • My iPod Classic won't sync--I keep getting error messages.

I have an iPod Classic (Late 2009) that's about a year and a half old. It just started refusing to sync with iTunes. I have a PC, and when I plug the iPod in, the computer wants to scan and fix the iPod. Whether I let it or not--I've done it both ways, multiple times--when I open iTunes, iTunes says I need to restore my iPod. It restores without glitching. But when I try to re-sync my library, I get 200-400 songs in and get an error message that a specific song can't be synced because of "error [numerical error]." I've seen "Error -50" a lot, but not always. It doesn't always get stuck on the same song, artist, or album--just somewhere in the B's, something goes wrong. At the beginning, I was seeing a "duplicate file" error message, but I haven't seen it the last 5-7 times I've gone through the restore-resync process.
I've tried manually managing the content, but the same thing happens. If it doesn't get stuck on a song, it'll say "Finishing Sync" for ages--until I have to force-quit iTunes and manually eject the iPod.
I have reinstalled iTunes--not 100%, but using their "find and replace faulty parts" option. I have an iPhone, and it syncs with no problem, and I my iTunes library itself is functioning totally normally. However, iTunes freezes a lot when I'm trying to fix this problem with my iPod, including when I first plug it in. I've had to force-quit iTunes multiple times because of this.
This all started because my iPod was skipping from about 10 seconds into one song to the next in the playlist. I figured something was wonky with the last sync, so I went to restore my iPod. When I plugged it in, I noticed that there was a software update, so I did that--I can't remember if I restored, then did the update, or the other way around. But nothing has worked since then.
It must be a problem with the iPod itself that the restore just isn't erasing, but I'm not sure where that leaves me. Help?

This could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Ipod classic won't sync with iTunes 10.4

My ipod classic 160 does not want to sync with the latest iTunes update(s).  The same thing happened with the last update about a month ago.  How do I fix this?  The last time I put the ipod in disc mode and that seemed to work.  But it isn't working this time.  Any suggestions?  Anyone know why this keeps happening?
    Thanks.

    Hi Pharmer
I had the same problem and finally found out it was the Spotlight in Lion that was causing the issue of the sync failing as its trying to do two things at once. At least thats what it has been for me.
By going to System Prefs > Spotlight > Privacy and adding the iPod to the list I was able to stop Spotlight indexing the iPod every time I attached it to my machine and thus stopping it from being able to sync.
You can check if its doing it by attaching your ipod then clicking on the spotlight in the top right. If its indexing it will tell you.
    Hope this helps you out
Update: This worked to get my iPod full of stuff. Next time I tried, it won't sync, so back to square one...

  • Ipod classic won't sync with itunes 11 anymore

My ipod 160gb classic died from a low battery, so i connect it to my computer, and then a strange white screen with a exclamation mark pop up saying 'do not disconnect', and then itunes suggested me to restore it, taking precaution, i went ahead and did that, but now itunes won't sync music to my ipod anymore, i think it has something to do with enable disk use being checked, but it won't let me uncheck it, i don't know what to do, someone please help!

Unclick Manually Manage Music and Videos, which is right above Enable Disk Use.  You can then click on Enable Disk Use.  I had the same problem as you and that fixed it.
