IPod Classic won't turn on unless plugged into wall even though battery is charged

I plugged in my old iPod Classic and charged it up for a long time. I got that little plug symbol that indicates that it's fully charged. The iPod turns on and works fine when it's plugged into the wall, but as soon as I unplug it, it won't do anything at all. Just black screen. I also tried plugging it into the computer. Nothing.
I tried re-setting by toggling the "Hold" button and then pressing Play/Pause and Menu at the same time. Nothing.
Why would it be fine when plugged into the wall but not when unplugged or plugged into the computer? Is it possible that is really is not fully charged even though it did show that little plug symbol? It had been just sitting for many months.

Hi there,
How old is your Classic? Often, after a couple of years, rechargable batteries begin to fail, especially after such a long period of inactivity. This happens with any gadget with this type of battery.
Try leaving it plugged in for 24 hours, and try again, to rule out that it isn't just really low on charge. If this doesn't help, it may be a good time to buy a replacement. New iPod Nanos and Touches will be released this October.
Below, I've linked to an Apple website which explains rechargable batteries, and why yours may not be working.
Apple - Batteries
I hope this helps, and I hope upgrading your device will not feel like an unnecessary expense. Let me know if you have any more questions,
Nathan

  • My iPod touch won't turn on unless pluggged into wall outlet!!

Hello. A while ago, my iPod started shutting off randomly, even though my battery was fully charged. After it shut off, I would turn it back on, then it was fine. However, as time went on, the time from when I turned it back on(after it randomly shutting off) to when it would shut off again, started to decrease. Soon, my iPod could not stay on for more then a couple seconds.
Now, my iPod touch won't even turn on unless it is plugged into the wall power source. It will even rarely turn on when plugged into the computer. I have reset its settings, and also erased all the data. After doing this, I tried to unplug it from the power source to see if it would stay on, and it did not. (still, when the iPod is plugged in, it says it is fully charged.)Also my iPod is updated to the most recent software.
I am unsure of why this is happening, and quite upset because I have only had this iPod touch since the Christmas of 2010. Is this a defective device, is something wrong with the battery, or is there something wrong with the software?
If I could have advice for fixing this problem that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You can try restoring to factory defaults/new iPod.  However, you likely have a hardware problem. An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store might be useful.

  • Dropped iPhone 4s and now won't turn on unless plugged into wall

    Hi there,
So I dropped my iphone 4s onto a hard floor 2 days ago, it was at 95% battery at that point. It now will only turn on when I plug it into the wall, and as soon as I unplug it, the phone turns off immediately.
When it is plugged into the wall it shows 100% battery and the signal (both wireless and carrier) are very touchy and it says 'searching...' a lot of the time.
I have had the phone for 19 months now and am out of warranty. It is also worth noting that 1 month ago I replaced the battery myself because I was having battery issues and it has been working perfectly since then up until this incident.
If anyone has any idea of how to fix this or any idea of what the problem may be it would be much appreciated. I have tried holding the home screen and top button simultaneously and also tried plugging into my laptop to restore but the laptop will not start the phone up, it just goes into a cycle of going to apple logo screen and then shutting off.
    Thanks very much.

The drop either jarred loose the battery connection or cracked the main circuit board. As you have repaired it yourself Apple won't touch it, so you might as well take it apart and see what has happened.

  • Ipod Nano won't turn on unless plugged in!!!

Please help! My Ipod nano, purchased just 2 years ago, won't turn on unless plugged in to an external power source, and when plugged in the screen has faint lines across the display and blotches at the sides! It was working perfectly fine until my battery went flat one day and all these problems popped up. Whats the problem and what should I do?

    Hello Exasperatin0n,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
It's likely that your Nano's battery is shot and will need to be replaced. So I would start there and then worry about the display issue. You can choose to Apple repair the Nano, a 3rd party repair company (just do a Google search for iPod Repair and you'll get a number of results), or you can even replace the parts yourself.

  • Iphone 4 won't turn on unless plugged into charger

My Iphone turned on all of a sudden and now it won't turn on unless it's plugged in. It still has my password on but it only says connect to itunes after I type in my password. When I plug it out it turns back off and when I plug it into my computer the apple logo just flashes on and off. Itunes also doesn't sense my iphone. I've tried holding the home/sleep button + Home button while it's plugged in the computer for 10 secs a few times then I tried it for 15 secs a few times then I tried it not plugged it but it still won't it still won't go into recovery mode. What should I do?? Should I just take it in for service?

Charge it for 30 minutes with the wall charger. Then hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons to reboot the phone. If it stays on when unplugged connect it to your computer and Restore it. If it doesn't you need a new battery; $79 at an Apple store, installed.

  • Ipod nano won't turn on unless plugged in. ipod is never used but purchased in '08

I have an ipod Nano 4GB (3rd generation, I believe) purchased in March 2008. This has not been used since then until I took it out of original package last night. I plugged in to charge overnight and charging battery icon appeared. This morning while still plugged in I set the language and date/time, but when I unplugged the ipod it powered off and will not power back on unless plugged in.
Using a different ipod charger and connector I plugged in to charge again for about 2 hours. It worked fine while plugged in showing a full battery, but again, once uplugged, the ipod powered off and won't power back on.
    What can I do?

It's likely that your iPod's battery is dead, since it hasn't been put to use in almost 4 years.  You'll need to have the battery replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company ( a little cheaper).
Or if you want you can purchase and swap out the battery yourself using one of the numerous walk through guides online.

  • My Ipod touch will not turn on unless plugged into a dock

When I try to turn my Ipod touch on, the apple will show up and then shut down.....I found that it will turn on and work if it's plugged in on my music dock, but the second I take it off it goes dead, even though it says the battery is full.
I'd appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions!

Have you tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem then you likely have a hardware problem like a bad battery.

  • HT4972 My ipods screen is black and wont turn on unless plugged into the wall

My ipods screen is black and wont turn on unless plugged into the wall not the computer but when i plug it into the computer and put it in DFU mode it wont restore there is an error 3194 and error 1602 and nothing i do helps

    Here's what I found about error 1602:
Error 1600, 1601, 1602: Try the following steps to resolve this error:
Ensure proper USB isolation troubleshooting has been performed, and test with a known-good cable.
Follow the steps listed for Error 1604.
This error may be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
Error 1603: If you receive this error and the iOS device is not automatically placed into recovery mode, it may be necessary to do so manually. Refer to iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to restore for steps on placing iPhone into forced recovery mode. Also, remove the IPSW and attempt to restore again. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user.
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
Error 3194 is also seen when somebody is trying to restore jailbroken devices.

  • IPod classic won't sync, doesn't go into disk mode what do I do next?

Here we go, another iPod classic problem.  A few days ago I noticed a lag while going through my artists list.  Went home, tried to sync, iTunes said I had a corrupted file please restore.  Not the first time this has happened so I thought it would be an easy fix.  Nope.  Restore didn't happen.  Now my classic doesn't turn on unless plugged in to my PC.   Went through the motions for everything Apple reccomends, nothing.  The screen looks like it's in disk mode, but doesn't say disk mode on it.  It won't go into disk mode, so I can't reformat it on Win 7.  Shows up in windows as removeable drive but does not show up in iTunes so I can't change settings or do another restore.

Main Issue: Short; in disk mode all I get is a screen that says "Okay to disconnect" with a check mark
In Disc mode, yes that is all you see on the Ipod Screen, as the iPod becomes an external hardisk and not a media player with Menu. I's main function is to store files to/from the Mac.
Hard reset (using the menu and middle buttons
Reset the iPod - you ust press the Menu and center button for about 10 secs till the logo comes ON.
I need to be able to put in disc mode to at least run diagnostics on it and can't even do that.
If you want to go into disk Diagnostic, read  this excellent post from tt2.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17028567#17028567
Today, the ipod is not even being recognized by the computer to say that it's there. There is no "connecting" screen, not even a charging symbol.
*Exception: It will charge when hooked up to a charger in an outlet which leads me to believe it's a software issue in the ipod.
You can try all the above, but you should know that when connecting the iPod to a Mac, do not use the Keyboard USB port, or any USB Hub. if you are using a Macbook Pro, only one USB port can be use for the iPod, the other one is not a high Power USB 2.0 port, which shared the Internal bus with iSight and other IO devices like Mouse, infraRed, Bluetooth etc.
So take a look at your Mac user manual and see which USB port to use.
    Have a nice day!

  • Can i charge my iPod shuffle whilst listening to Music? (plugged into wall and using twin audio jack?

I want to connect my iPod shuffle to a telephone line so when people are put on hold they can listen to music, however the battery will die after some time.
Can i charge the iPod whilst listening to music simultaneously?  (Plugged into wall not computer)

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
The iPod will support playback and charging only if you have a wire that supports it. Since both audio out and electricity flow through the 1 headphone port you would need a cord of some sorts that will allow the iPod to charge and include audio out. As far as using it on a telephone. If the telephone you are using supports and audio input using the headphone jack then you could use the iPod shuffle as telephone music. If not than the iPod Shuffle may not be the best tool for you.
