Ipod (click 40g) recognized by windows, but not by itunes strange problem

Since about two weeks my ipod is not recognized by itunes.
I suspect it started when i unplugged the ipod (accidentely) when the 'do not disconnect' sign was still on.
Since then every time i plug in my ipod, it is recognized by windows as plugged in hardware. When opening windows explorer, i can see my ipod, but clicking on it, to view its contents causes the explorer to jam. Itunes also does not recognize the ipod at all. IpodUpdater tends to be a little bit unpredictable about whether it will recognize the ipod.
i tried al the five R's. Resetting, reinstalling itunes and my ipod, retrying on a different computer, restarting, restoring.
My ipod itself seems to work fine. it sometimes jammed during a song, which never occured before. but now, since i restored my ipod, i don't have any music any more, so i can't test it.
When trying my ipod on a different computer, i managed to get it recognized on itunes once. but when i tried to copy music, the connection failed and itunes froze.
the sound my ipod makes is also a bit strange. when
i open ipodupdater, and the updater tries to connect to the ipod, the ipod seems to start up with a zooming (normal) sound, but then, after a second you hear a little ipod-cracklingsound, and it starts all over.
is there any suggestion at all about what i can do to try to
fix this myself

I have a very similar problem except that I have tried all the remedial steps but the last. I cannot get the ipod updater to recognise the ipod at all, A reset simply resets and the do not disconnect message comes back after a few seconds. Again, My Computer can see the ipod as a hard drive but it cannotb access it and this causes My Computer to stop responding. Grateful for any help.

Did you remove all Apple related software including QuickTime, Safari, Software Update utility for Windows, etc using the exact instructions in this Apple support document?

Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port and not a USB or similar? Have you tried different cables to help rule out a faulty or damaged cable?
Does it connect to iTunes okay on another PC or Mac?

1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

Perhaps the reason you haven't had any replies is because there is no such thing as an 8GB iPod Classic.
I suggest that you begin by correctly identifying which iPod you have.

Ive followed the support site on what to do if the iPod is recognized in Windows but not iTunes... but to no avail.
ive had a 20GB photo thats been working o.k. (need to send it in) but now neither it nor my new 30GB Video will appear on iTunes... just in windows.... any suggestions? or should i just call up apple...
p.s. i know its not the iPods cause they update fine on my sisters laptop...

Does it say Cannot Mount iPod?
Is the software on your computer up to date? You may want to try reinstalling it as well...

Ipad recognized by windows but not in itunes

When i connect my ipad to my windows 7 computer, only the computer recognizes the ipad. It does not show up in itunes. I have a different computer that does recognize it in itunes though.

IPod Mini is recognized by Windows but Not iTunes

my ipod mini is set to update automatically with itunes, but the other day it stopped. I was using iTunes 4 but upgraded to 6 yesterday, still no luck. My mini is not recognized by itunes. I then uninstalled the iPod updater and then reinstalled it. Then, when i reconnected the iPod, a box poped up and said "Mike's iPod" (calendar, contacts), but still nothing in iTunes.
I tried to reset it, no luck
Tried to upgrade iTunes, but ipod is still not recognized
Tried uninstall & reinstall of Updater, no luck
This has been going on for a week now. If anyone can help, PLEASE DO!!!

Do a reset (make sure you see the Apple logo) while it's plugged in to the computer.
That's the 'starting place'.
And you're not doing a reset if you don't see the Apple logo, BTW. It's not easy to do. If you don't know how to do a reset, you can find directions by doing a quick search of this forum, or doing a quick review of the manual that came with your iPod.

ITouch recognized in windows but not in iTunes

My wife gave me he itouch that she used on her iMac. But having problems with it on my PC. My old iPod works just fine and shows up in iTunes.
But when I connect the iTouch is does not show up in itunes. At first it would not even show up the control panel. I fixed that but deleting the serial bus controller driver then pluging the itouch back in and reloading the drivers.
But it will not show up in iTunes. I have tried all the Apple help guides. Reinstalled itunes after deleting all itune related files. When I open itunes it will not show and freezes itunes and have to close it with the task manager. Some times it will not even let me open itunes and I have to uninstall and reinstall itunes.
I did a restore on the wife's iMac but still a no go.
I have been working with this for hours and have tried all kinds of fixes suggested by Apple and different forums. You all are my last, best hope.

This is a possible fix for those with the "iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes" problem. This also fixes those have the update/restore problem (ipod disconnects after clicking update/restore in itunes)

I had the exact same problems before, iTunes doesn’t recognize iPod after connecting it, I had to use the restart iPod Service method to get it working.
I tried this on my second computer and it worked perfectly, iTunes recognizes iPod every time I plug it in.
I compared the process/services opened in both computers, and I turned on some services which were previously on disable(excluding iPod Service). Unfortunately I forgot which services it was, so I took some screenshots and compare these with your services.
After modifying the services, I tried plug and unplug the iPod several times without closing iTunes, iPod was instantly recognized by iTunes every time!
I attached the links to screenshots of my automatic services and manual services, ignore the service if its not on your list!
For those don’t know how to open Services, Start -> Run -> “services.msc”

IPod Nano IS recognized by windows but itunes doesn't...

I have recently bought an ipod nano and i've installed the software and itunes and everything...when i plug the ipod into the usb drive, it IS recognized by the computer but not by Itunes....i cannot transfer my songs onto my ipod and it hasnt asked me for a name for my ipod like it did with my 2nd generation ipod.......can anyone help?

first have a look inside your "My Computer". is the ipod showing up in there?
if it isn't, see:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
