Ipod "Click of death", frozen screen, unrecognized by my computer

So i got my ipod like 20 billion years ago(probably 3yrs), it is 20g black and white screen one.
About 10 days after i got it, it broke. It didn't like working on my computer(the good computer).
Currently it isnt recognized by my computer, it says its malfunctioning usb. It came up earlyer but only till it had enough charge to show me a frozen screen, then it stops working.
The frozen screen has just disapeared becoz it ran out of charge, so i plugged it back into my computer and it came up with a ! and a picture of a battery on the ipods screen, but nothing happened on my computer.
Itunes doesnt recognize it all either, its just being annoying, as it has for the past 3 yrs or so.

Ok update, i was able to access it for a short moment then i connected it to the computer, it has frozen the bottom tool bar while trying to use it, but the screen aint frozen but i cant do anything.

  • 1st gen ipod nano with a frozen screen no longer recognized by computer

I have an ipod nano (1st gen) with a frozen screen that is no longer recognized by any computer.  I had just barely downloaded a new audio book onto it before ejecting from itunes and trying to play it when it froze.  Since then I have tried updating my itunes,  plugging it into a second computer, and turning it off by holding the pause button, but nothing seems to work.  Suggestions? Or, has it just reached the end of its lifespan?

    Hi caitt,
I don't know if "what Apple said to do" means that you tried the 5 R's, but that's a good start:
    The 5 R's
    From there, try this:
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
    And this...
    iPod won't turn on
    Good luck,
    maz

  • Ipod nano 3rd generation , blank screen when attached to computer, ipod will not reset??? any help please?

    Hi there,
I have just purchased a 2nd hand ipod nano 3rd gen.  When I received it the screen was in working order but everything from the previous owner had been wiped.  I attatched to computer and all seemed well, attached it then to itunes and at first it seemed to go ok, however screen then went blank and froze.
I am now unable to restart ipod.  ipos is still being recognised by itunes so I tried to restart ipod whielst attatched to itunes to to try and put into play mode but still no joy, no apple appearing on screen.
    Ipod was fully charged.
Any ideas please as I am not the most technical of people and its slowly driving me mad
    Kind Regards
    Lindsey

How did you try and reset the iPod? To reset the iPod, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together at the same time long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  Don't be afraid to try this procedure more than once.

  • 4G CLICK OF DEATH

    I've had 3 replacements for a 4G iPod since December 2004.
I used to think my first 4G iPod failed because I took it running with me and a few weeks later after having had no problems, suddenly the iPod hard disk begins to spin up, starts making that "all-so-familiar-now" clicking noise. After resets and failed attempts to restore the iPod software on the Mac, I'd give up and send it back.
I thought I took alot better care of the second iPod, never took it running, never dropped it. Only stayed in the car and with me at work. Never shook it up so as to cause any severe problem. After a few months went by, lo and behold it suddenly started the clicking again. And so, it went back... again.
Eventually my current and third iPod has finally succumbed to the evil click of death. Only this time, my iPod is out of warranty and I can't send it back for a free replacement.
I read an article online some months ago that mentioned this click of death is rampant for 4G iPods. The author of the article claimed he thought the click of death was the cable connecting the circuitry to the hard disk can come loose from time to time. By simply opening the iPod and making sure the cable with the pins is properly connected to the hard disk he suddenly had a working iPod again.
I tried this same procedure, figuring it was out of warranty anyway so there's nothing to lose, and magically it worked. It didn't look as if anything had come loose from the hard disk though on mine. I pressed my finger against the ribbon connected to the hard disk, closed the iPod, and turned it on again. The click of death was gone. I plugged it to the Mac, ran the iPod updater and a had a working iPod again!
But for some reason this is only a temporary solution. Every so often, something weird would happen. Maybe the iPod would lock up, sometimes it might skip between songs, sometimes it acted really slow. Occasionally I could make it work fine again by forcing it to reset. Other times, I'd get the sad iPod icon or the folder icon. When this occurred, I'd whip out my pocket knife (I got good at doing this in a matter of seconds) open the iPod, press against the ribbon, close the iPod. BEHOLD it worked again! It would go maybe another few weeks with no problems syncing or copying music.
Until one day.... I was skipping through songs in the car, and it crashed hard on this one song. I've played the song many times without problem. Now all it does is show the Apple logo for a few seconds, spin up, click click, off, restarts, shows the Apple logo... repeat. It responds to no manual commands. Computer won't even recognize it because the iPod doesn't ever boot, it's stuck in loop of crashing and restarting, I couldn't even turn it off.
Left me no choice but to open it up again, and disconnect the hard disk while it was on. That stopped the restarts. The iPod software is still OK, but it won't recognize the disk. If I reconnect the disk, it starts the restart cycle over and over. It's officially out cold now. I suspect the hard disk is to blame. I also believe the same problem plagued my previous iPod replacements, I'd just never analyzed it, rather sent it back to Apple and they'd of course give me a brand new one.
All I got to say is... it's ridiculous the amount of 4G iPod click of death problems I hear about. Apple should have sent me a brand new nano or 5G long ago to replace what I believe they would have known was so obvious of a widespread problem in their 4G iPods. Maybe the recent updater is to blame, but I don't know. After 3 iPods and out of luck on warranties, can anyone fill me in more about the iPod hard disk? Is it the same as any mini hard disk standard to all laptops?
    PowerMac G4 (Sawtooth)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Have you tried this before
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Problem with my iPod touch: Frozen screen, unable to access anything as slider does not work, will not accept a full restore.  Apple Store advised that it is a 'hardware' problem and I could trade-in!

I am a relatively 'new' user.  Touch was a gift, I used it in a simplistic way - listened to music took a few photos, added a few calendar events.  After a year I then decided to be more proactive and found a few free apps (Solitaire) - then had a the frozen screen problem which I though was connected to low battery, but it wasn't.  I recharged it, still could not access, then tried a full restore and got an error message.  Took it to a Genius Bar and was told it was a hardware problem and as it is out of warranty  I could trade in or just buy a different product.  As this is my first Apple product is this usual?  Do Apple products have a very short shelf life - I anticipated that it would last me longer than a year!  Has anyone else had this problem?  Was it able to be resolved? Or is it worth trying to get it repaired - and if so who can do it - Apple  Store did not offer that to me as an option?

Sure sounds like a hardware problem. It happens some times. The iPod is just an electrical device.
Apple will exchange it for a refurbished one for this price. Apple does not repair your iPod.

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Please post any help for me... thank you... I am pretty frustrated right now.

its fixed!!  After posting my problem with the FROZEN ipod classic (2007) 80 gb a screen popped up with similar subjects that I did not find in my original search.  'Rich Fleming' in the community posted a suggestion to someone with a similar frozen issue and it WORKED when I tried it.
hold the 'menu' and the 'circle' buttons down at the same time, KEEP the pressed until the apple appears. and now it is working.  Hope this helps others.

  • My ipod nano 5th gen  wont play movies or videos on my ipod but plays them on itunes when i click on it the screen flashes black i have tried taking the movie off my ipod and putting it back on but it still won't work what should i do?

My ipod nano 5th gen. won't play movies or tv shows but it plays them on itunes.  When I click  on it the screen flashes black. I have tried taking the videos off my ipod and then putting them back on but it still won't work. what should i do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hi just wanted to let you know I solved most of my XP problems with my new IPOD. It won't recognise the IPOD or driver and froze and locked up and then the battery died. After hours of trying different things here is what I did. I completly closed computer down. Waited 15 minutes turned on and reloaded everything. I put the usb cable in but not hooked up to IPOD. I turned off Mcaffee (all of it). After my computer came on. I then went and closed everything I didn't need in the bottom toolbar. (taskbar). I then reloaded the software and waited. Took forever to reload and I don't know why but whatever it worked but I DID NOT HOOK UP THE IPOD LIKE IT SAID! I instead shut down the computer after loading the software and waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. I again waited and shut of mcaffee. It loaded everything fine this time and said new hard ware and drivers detected. I plugged my IPOD in and YES I WAS UP AND RUNNING (THIS IS AFTER 6 HOURS OF PLAYING WITH OTHER THINGS!) I am able to load and play, burn, watch movies, see pictures and everything your suppose too! The only thing I see different than the instructions is I left my usb cable plugged in and when it said to eject the disk I didn't. I also didn't plug in the IPOD (5th Gen) and then I shut down waited and then restarted the computer. I hope this helps others because I know the feeling of wanting to return something you paid dearly for and worked hard at saving money to buy one and it doesn't work. My only thing I dislike about apple is they didn't supply a ac adapter for the IPOD and the instructions say to plug it up when trying to charge battery. DUHHHHHH, ya can't do that if ya don't have one and stores are closed and won' open until Monday! But at least I am up and running. I just hate having to plug up IPOD to computer daily to charge the battery which only last a half a day1

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.
