Ipod clicking, won't turn on, computer won't recognize

Hi there,
My iPod Classic 160GB (bought earlier this year, so relatively new, most recent OS) still had battery tonight. I paused my music, put it to sleep, locked my iPod. I then later tried to turn it back on - nothing had happened to the iPod physically, no knocks, no spills etc, since I turned the iPod off. It wouldn't turn on, I thought the battery had died. However upon pluggng it in, and leaving it for half an hour, it showed no signs of life, and was making clicking noises coming from the harddrive. A hard reset had no effect. Plugging it via USB cord had no effect either, and the computer didn't pick it up - so I cannot restore my iPod to factory settings. The screen is completely black and won't respond to anything.

Well, there is always the possibility that it's been jailbroke, in which case, you're out of luck.  However...

  • 20GB iPod/comp won't recognize/folder with exp point

Hey, hope someone here can help me out. I have a 20GB white iPod with the wheel and I am having some problems. First off, when the iPod tries to boot up, it shows the Apple logo, and then goes straight to a folder with an exclamation point. While it is doing this i hear it making a clicking sound. I have reset the thing 1000 times and it doesn't help. Also, my computer will not recognize it. iTunes won't see it, and when i go to My Computer, it is not shown there either. I've tried restoring it using the iPod updater, but that doesn't work because it cannot detect it. I have tried disk mode as well, but it doesn't detect it either. Any ideas of what I can do??

Ryan, in case you would like to save this cost, I suggest that you should be fixed it with a Mac computer.
Put your iPod in Disk Mode, connect it with a Mac computer (please find a friend who is using Mac),very likely it will able to be mounted and shows up on the Desktop. Open the Disk Utility and do a ERASE (format in MS DOS=FAT32). Once completed, re-plug it back with your PC, and a window pop-up mentions that your iPod can't be read and need to be formatted. Click "OK", then open the iPod updater and click RESTORE.
I have managed to fix couple of iPod with the same problem

  • IPod software won't recognize shuffle, why?

Note: This topic was moved from 'Safari.'
When I try to format my ipod shuffle with the iPod shuffle and I plug in the shuffle as requested, my software won't recognize the device!!!! Can anyone tell me what to do?

    Karen,
You have asked your question in the discussion forum for the Macintosh Safari browser. You should go to the iPod Shuffle/Windows forum and ask your question there and you will probably get a faster answer then here.

  • IPod won't turn on/computer does not recognize

I am desperate for help that doesn't end restoring factory settings.
I charged my iPod last night, and it had a full battery charge. This afternoon when I started to listen to it, it would not turn on. Subsequently, when I plugged it into my computer, it did not connect to iTunes or anything. I tried to update the software, and it said to connect an iPod to update. It is connected! My computer is not registerging the connection, and the iPod is 100% lifeless.
And for the record, yes, the hold function is disabled.

I'm also having this problem. My iPod won't charge, nor will my iBook or my charger recognize that it's connected. 100% lifeless here also. I'm on hold with Apple Support; if they can solve the problem, I'll repost.

  • My computer was rebuilt and now my ipod touch won't recognize it as an authorised devise what do I do

I would like to know how to authorize my computer now that it has been rebuilt? My "old computer" no longer exists, as this technicly is my "old computer" just new insides. I need to be able to manage my devises that are linked to my i touch, so that I can sinc it. It's been almost a full year since it's been sinced, and I don't want to lose my stuff!

I am not clear as to your problem. Maybe:

    or maybe:

  • My iPod touch won't recognize my touch. It won't read or accept my finger. Ive tried to turn it off but it won't help it and doesn't fix it. Can someone please help me?

    Please help me.
I wanna buy a new screen but I don't wanna buy it and it be a waste of money so can someone please help me?

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • ITunes and iPod updater won't recognize iPod

I'm running Windows XP and it shows the iPod is there but it won't show up in iTunes and iPod updater after 'initializing' for a good 5-10 minutes says either 'could not recognize the iPod' or if it does let me restore give the 'Firmware update failure. Diskwrite error.' I have the latest iTunes and iPod update and went through all the steps in the 'Windows recognizes iPod but iTunes does not' Troubleshooting help section. All these problems started when I tried to update with the new iPod updater software and got an error, everything worked fine before. I have also tried using a friends USB cable the problem is obviously in the Nano itself. Is there any way to safely format without using the iPod updater? or what should I try doing next?
Also it seems like when the nano isn't plugged into a power source it drains the battery, with nothing showing on the screen because it always starts charging when I hook it up to the computer even though it was fully charge before.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
I too am having this exact same problem. My iPod nano was working perfectly until this "latest update" Since I installed that update my itunes and my ipod updater will NOT recognize my iPod. I am getting all the same error messages as you.
I have done EVERYTHING recommeded in the support pages. Reinstall, uninstall, install, reboot I've done it all a hundred times. I have over 5 pages of support documents I printed up and I followed them to the T. I have 10 different USB ports including 3 2.0 USB ports. My windows recognizes the iPod instantly, but the updater will not.
I 'm starting to think it's a problem with the update software.
Please, if anybody has any advice other than "www.apple.com/support/ipod" please post something. I have had my Nano since October and never had a problem with it and I really, really miss it right now.
    Thanks

  • My iPod touch won't recognize in itunes..

I have Version 4.1 (it's an older iPod touch). Whenever I plug in my iPod to the computer, it doesn't even pop up in the device manager list in iTunes.
       Any ideas?

  • IPod Touch Won't Recognize USB Cables

My 4th gen iPod Touch no longer recognizes my USB cables. They won't work through my computers and they won't work through a wall charger. My iPod charges fine through my JBL Sound Stage, it's just a problem with the cables. If I plug either cable into my iPod, nothing happens. No beeps, no messages, no charging screen, nothing.
I think I can pinpoint the problem until shortly after I purchased a spare cable, but that may very well be a coincidence. I've been using a third party wall charger, so that could be an issue as well- but it has never been a problem until after I purchased the new cable (can cables "burn out"?). I'd reset my iPod, but I need a cable to do that. So far I've just been charging via my JBL Sound Stage and syncing over WiFi.

If you have tried multiple computers and multiple USB sync cables, that definitely points to a hardware issue with your iPod Touch.  Have you check the dock connector port for any signs of damage or debris that could be blocking or preventing the connection?  Take a can of compressed air and trying blowing it out and using a Q-tip or similar to clean the contacts.
You'll likely need to have the iPod serviced or replaced.  If still under warranty, take it into your local Apple store and see what they can do for you.

  • IPod touch won't recognize my password

All of a sudden, when I turn on my iPod touch & attempt to put in my password, I'm told the p/w is incorrect & it says to try again in 15 minutes.  I haven't changed the p/w since I got it, so what's going on?

Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. Place the iPod in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.

  • My 4th gen iPod touch won't recognize the remote feature on earbuds other than Apple earpods - anyone else had this issue?

Apple earpods don't fit my ears well, so I bought a pair of Sony earbuds a few months ago. When they came, I noted that I could turn volume up and down, but the remote portion didn't work - couldn't pause or skip music. They weren't the highest quality so I assumed it was a fluke.
I just got a new pair of earbuds and same issue! The volume works but the remote does nothing. I tried to use my boyfriend's Apple earpods with my touch and the remote works fine. Also, the new earbuds I got work, remote and all, on his 4th gen Nano.
I can't seem to find anything online about why these earbuds that are supposed to be compatible wouldn't be working. I've cleaned out the audio jack so it's not a lint issue, plus it really does work just fine with Apple earpods, only alternatives don't work. And again, I can hear fine and the volume can be controlled but the remote to pause and play and skip isn't recognized at all.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

So just in case anyone else ever runs into this...
I solved the issue and it was that between the plug of the new earbuds being slightly thicker than the Apple earpods, and the width of the case that I was using for my iPod, there wasn't a connection being made to activate the remote function.
I took off the case and now the earbuds work exactly as they should!
