hi, you'll need to contact your previous service provider (the one from who you got the iPhone) and ask for them to send you a code to unlock it.
It might cost you calling fees to call to your originating country, especially since service providers have special phone numbers, so you might want to ask a relative to call it for you, but you will need to give that person the phone's EMEI. you can find this number in the iPhone's settings.

This has just happened to me today. I have an iphone 5 on Verizon. I was using the internet on the device normally when it started.
