IPod Compatible Video

Hey, I have noticed that video content which I purchase off of the iTunes store (featured films) are downloaded in a resolution higher than that of the standard 640x480 resolution required for iPod compatibility.
I want to have the full resolution of my home movies when I put them on iTunes for my Apple TV, but I don't want to have to make a second iPod compatible version as well.
Is there any way to make one video which will have full resolution but can be transfered to an iPod like the content purchased from the iTunes Store?

Well it is like an MP3 or an AAC audio file. The higher the bit rate, the better the quality. But also the larger the file.
Don't forget resolution is a total number of pixels and then simply arranged in different ways. So 640x480 is 307,200 total pixels (4:3). But let's say you take one of the 2.5:1 super wide screen videos and convert it so 752x320. Well total pixels are 240,640 so while wide screen, the total number of pixels is actually LESS than the 640x480 version. So for the same quality, you would have a lower bit rate. Likewise, you could take a standard 16:9 widescreen and make the height not quite 480, say 400 pixels, so your 16:9 widescreen is 711x400 and your total pixels is again LESS at 284k. So you can get widescreen formats on the iPod that have a lower bit rate than normal 4:3 ration videos.
Bit rate is also effected by the quality at which you encode the material and the number of frames per second. You can lower the number of frames per second, to lower the bit rate, but you also lower the quality.

  • IPod Compatible Video Podcast?

Would anyone out there who is lucky enough to own a Video iPod be willing to test the videos on my Video Podcast for compatability?
I have compressed the videos so that they should be compatible but I have received a report that they do not play on the iPod. If this is true, I will need to fix whatever the problem is.
Thank you for your help. My Video Podcast can be found at: http://www.indiecinema.org

    Alexander....
I downloaded your movie "Mandy" and and tried to load it to my ipod. It didn't. When I looked at the movie properties in Quicktime the video kb rate was 661kb a sec, and the audio was acc 44.1. I'm guessing that the sum total added up to more that 768 kb a sec which seems to be the magic number with the video ipod.
there's a real easy way to export ipod compatible videos for those of us who don't know how to balance all of the different parameters of video editing. Even if you do, there real easy to use and work in the background while you go do other stuff on your computer.
If you're ripping a DVD for your ipod. go to this site and download HANDBRAKE.
    http://handbrake.m0k.org/
it's a great little shareware tool for ripping DVD's to your library. When you've got that done go to this next site and follow the instructions for using handbrake to make ipod compatible video.
    http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/tutorials/dvd-to-ipod/index.shtml
if you're ripping an individual file that you created... go get this other little piece of software....
    iSquint
    http://www.isquint.org/
Works great, "brain dead" easy to use, faster than quicktime
Again, use these pieces of software for stuff that you've purchased or created. They work great.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot add ipod-compatible videos

    Hello,
I'm having trouble adding videos to my 30 GB iPod. I've tried adding various videos that I believe to be iPod compatible -- some converted to 320x240 H.264 at 200 kbps/24fps as a .mp4; a few downloaded from sites like Google Video that offer downloads in iPod/PSP format. I always get the error "file.mp4 was not copied to the iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod."
I'm not sure if this might have caused the problem, but I recently changed the computer I am using with the iPod. I used to use a computer with Windows XP, with which I could add both music and videos perfectly. I am now using a Powerbook with Mac OS X. I restored the iPod on the Mac after my first tries to add video on the Mac failed, but I still get the same error. I can add music just fine.
    Help please?
    Thanks a bunch in advance.

I have the same problem too. I used vixy.net Online FLV Converter : Download online videos direct to PC / iPod / PSP to convert youtube videos into mp4 file and load into my ipod. but it seemed to only play music, cannot watch video at all. please help

  • Smart Playlist - iPod Compatible Video

    Hello,
I have an AppleTV so most of my movies are encoded for that. Now I have an iPod Touch and I want to make a Smart Playlist that shows me all of the videos that are not compatible with the iPod Touch. Is there any way to do that?
    Thanks!

Short of attempting to copy them to an iPod I'm not aware of a foolproof method for determing which will & which won't If you're prepared to do it manually then you might be able to compare the details on the "Get Info" Summary tab with the following spec.
Support for 480p and 576p component TV out
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • CompUSA USB 2.o Card, iTunes 7.02, iPod with Video Problem

I just purchased a new 80 gig iPod with video and had to upgrade my MDD Duak 1 Ghz for USB 2.0, as transfer in USB 1 takes far too long. I purchased a card from CompUSA (SKU 304244) which adds two external ports only. When I attempt to transfer files into the iPod it seems to function at the faster speed, but will then freeze on a file, not allowing me to eject the iPod or sometimes to even force quit iTunes. I have tried this several times and there is no consistency regarding how many files have transferred or their size as to when the freeze will occur.
I originally tried this without adding a driver (using OS X 10.4.8), then I added the one from the included disc - same results. I then re-installed the 10.4.8 updater thinking this might have a more recent driver, but things are still the same.
I don't have any other USB 2 devices to use to test the card.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not all of the USB2 PCI cards out there are completely compatible with Mac as they claim to be.
I tried a two-port IOGear card that had that same problem.
Replace it with a 5 port (1 internal and 4 external) Belkin and it works just fine.
Someone has had a list somewhere of the ones that work best. I know that Belkin is one of the good brands to buy for loading a video iPod on a PowerMac. There are others, though.
You might find more on it in the video iPod board.

  • Creating a cropped h.264 - 640x240 iPod compatable video from NTSC DV

Question: Does anyone know how to crop a 720x480 DV, 23.98fps video from Final Cut, to a 640x240, h.264 QuickTime file that is compatible with the iPod and TV?
I've been at this for two weeks, combing the forums for an answer to this problem, and have found nothing.
I have a weekly podcast that features 4 hosts. The standard 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios on my camera are not wide enough, so I have been masking the video in quicktime to 2.35:1 and using the "export for iPod" option under Export->QuickTime Conversion ending up with a masked 640x480. With the release of the TV I have been trying to create a 640x240 QuickTime video so it will fill the entire width of a TV as well as the iPod.
The show is shot with a DVX100A in 24PA, captured into FCP at 23.98 advanced pull-down, and edited all with the the 23.98 advanced pull-down easy setup.
Everything works fine until I try to crop the video and save it as a h.264, 640x240, iPod/TV compatible video. The big problem is finding the h.264 base profile and the AAC-LC (Low-Complexity setting), except the export MPEG-4 option in QuickTime Pro. Also, all the 3rd party apps I have tried do not crop the video and instead squish it vertically.
Does anyone know how to crop a 720x480 DV, 23.98fps video to 640x240 h.264 that is compatible with the iPod and TV?
Here is everything I have tried:
    1. Export->Quicktime Conversion->QuickTime Movie
Problem: Does not work with iPod
    2.Export->Quicktime Conversion->MPEG-4
Problem: Cropping does not work, video comes out squished
    3.Export->Compressor
Problem: Any cropping of the video results in horrible video quality
4.Dropping sequence into a 640x240 sequence before export
Problem: Same as 3, poor video quality
I also tried all of the following 3rd party apps with a self contained QT file:
    iSquint/Visual Hub
    Problem: Cannot crop without squishing
    ffmpegx
Crop and Auto Crop do not crop, squish video
    MPEG Stream Clip
Cannot choose baseline h.264 or AAC-LC
All of these programs can export a 640x240 video, but iSquint/Visual Hub/ffmpegx all produced vertically squished video instead of cropping. MPEG streamClip was able to do everything correctly, just unable to select baseline and low-complexity profiles for h.264 and AAC respectively.
    PowerMac Dual G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   FCP 5.1 Studio

    3.Export->Compressor
Problem: Any cropping of the video results in horrible video quality
Can you detail what exacts steps you're taking here? I export anamorphic 720x480 files (usually matted to 2.35:1) using the iPod setting all the time and, provided I specify the crop amounts, correct the frame size (ie. make it 640x272) and, most importantly, turn Frame Controls on, I get excellent quality.
Of course, having said that, you're trying to output a 640x240 file, so I'm guessing you're using a different setting in Compressor? Not the iPod preset?

  • Saving two iPod-compatible movies into one iPod-compatible movie?!?

This is baffling me...Why can't I simply take two iPod-compatible MP4 videos, paste them together, and SAVE it as a self-contained movie which is iPod-compatible?? QT Player 7.0.4 Pro forces you to save the self-contained movie as ".mov" and if you try to change the extension afterwards, QT Player refuses to open it. At any rate, it won't transfer to the iPod either. I realize I can always re-encode as an iPod compatible movie but that's pretty time-consuming (plus I worry about further compression reducing the quality unneccessarily)! Is there an easier way?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   QT 7.0.4 Pro

The video iPod can play the .mov file extension as long as the specs for it are not exceeded.
Your "pasted" .mp4 or .m4v files are just in a .mov container. No edits or changes to the codecs used. The two "joined" files should work just fine on the iPod (assuming they worked properly prior to joining them together).

  • Will ipod 5G video 80Gb work with B

    Hi,
Just trying to clear this problem up, I have the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air Dock and recently purchased an 80 Gb ipod 5G Video (circa 2006), I purchased this 2nd hand recently from e-bay and it sounds superb through headphones and enables me to store my cd collection in full in apple Lossless format.
However when I dock it with the Zeppelin Air it says that the docked device is not compatible with this ipod. My Ipod touch 1st generation works with the Zeppelin but is only 32Gb in capacity so I was Dissapointed to find that the Ipod 5G video won't Dock, can anyone confirm that it is incompatible with the Zeppelin Air, Regards, Cyber!

    Okay,
Had a response from Bowers & Wilkins about this, they have confirmed that the ipod 5G Video is incompatible with the Zeppelin Air because it does not provide digital out from the dock (30 pin) connector, so hope this can help anyone thinking of purchasing a B&W Zeppelin Air for use with an ipod.

  • IPhone and iPod with video docking station.

I just got an iPhone and was happy to see that it fit in my iPod with video docking station. But when I plug it in I get a message that says that this docking station was not meant to be used with the iPhone, and then it just syncs up and works fine with iTunes anyway.
So what's with the warning? Can the phone be damaged by the docking station? Should I be worried? And if there is nothing to worry about, why splash the warning?
Thanks, I look forward to your insight.

There are very few if any docks that are compatible with all functions of all ipods as well as the iphone 3G. Even Apple can scarcely manufacture one (although with a series of adaptors and optional cables they sell a "universal dock"). One of the biggest issues is the charging, as the 3G only charges via the 5 volt USB standard. I don't think there is a risk of damage, but an incoming call could generate some noise artifacts in your sound system. Have you been able to output video from your phone with that dock, and does it charge? BTW which dock are you using?

    i sync'ed my ipod,
i watched the progress bar as itunes told me it was copying the movie
    no errors were reported
in itunes, under the "On this iPod" the movie says it's there

  • Itunes/Ipod Touch Video Playback Problem

    Hi all!
I am asking all you Ipod guru's for some help and insights, as I am getting slightly frustrated...
    Background:
For a project at work I am trying to set up a video podcast feed with video's we have created for our customer.
The idea is that everyone at upcoming management conference will receive a Ipod Touch, with some easy explanation on how to -through a feed- download all our video's for them.
For that purpose I have set up a testfeed (checked and doublechecked) to get the videos into Itunes.
The feed works, the channels and videos show up under Podcasts and the videos are playable in Itunes (latest update) with no problems.
    Now the problems start:
When I connect an Ipod Touch, check manual syncing (I don't want to touch what is already on there), and drag the videos to the Ipod, the videos only show up under the 'recently added' category. The channel does not even show, and even though they are videos.
I can play the videos from there in Itunes, and they work fine.
When I eject the Ipod, and then want to watch the videos, I have to really search for them: they are under Music (!!), under 'recently added', and only play the sound, not the video (although the first frame of the video is shown).
To try and circumvent the problem I directly imported the video into Itunes, instead of through the feed (although that totally negates the whole idea to begin with), the videos nicely show up under the Video category in Itunes.
When dragged from there to the Ipod, all works. As I then want to see those newly added videos on the Ipod, they NOW promptly show up in the video category, and play perfectly, with image and sound, and fullscreen.
So, the problem is not with the video itself. What am I doing wrong?
(nothing has changed in the videos at all from the beginning of the process, the videos were already Ipod-ready)
Any thoughts, where do the problems originate? Can I do something in the feed already, or...?
Any ideas will be most welcome!
Thank you very much in advance.
    Peter
P.S. it's also impossible to delete the uploaded video's that ended in the 'recently added' category

Since I've read similar threads on this, I have to think it's a bug.
What if you create a playlist in iTunes with the Podcast's name on it?
I can't really think of any other way around this until it gets fixed.
Oh, and send Apple feedback on this issue - it will help bring it to their attention.

  • IPod 5G video + Belkin TuneTalk stereo recording don't function

iPod 5G video 30Gb + Belkin TuneTalk stereo recording don't function on firmware 1.2.1
every 48 second it skips for 1 - 2 seconds in HQ MODE
Belkin say: It's how Apple manage the write from storage to hard disc
It's a shame that this is already more then 5 mounths !!!!
no possibilaty to downgrade the firmware..;(
1 not one note on Belkin.com site (they still sell it !!)
    or
    2 on Apple update site
NOTE here on the discussion from januari 2007 !!!
When I record in stereo, it skips through out the recording. I'll be listening to what I have recorded, and I'll notice that chunks of about 3 seconds are missing from the recording
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)   G5

actually a very similar problem here. the recording was 35 min and it jumps and skips down to about 7 min. I thought it was a problem with the wav file that was recorded so I converted it to mp3 to and the same problem.
i do have firmware 1.2.1 but had never successfully used it before this attempt. did you ever get any resolution on this?

  • ITunes not recognising iPod's video capabilities

When iTunes is up and the iPod is connected and I go into the options for the iPod, the options in the Video tab are shaded out. Whenever I try dragging a video onto the iPod it says they can not be viewed on this iPod. I KNOW this is a 5th Gen iPod with video capabilities.

You need to add the video to iTunes first, and then synch with the iPod. I don' think you can simply drag a video directly to the iPod.
