Ipod completely screwed up

I tried an expert at ilounge and he said come here because he could not help. Here's whats going on: My ipod will not turn on, it either shows a sad face on the ipod screen, or an inanimate battery (which means the battery is ), because the battery is , I cannot put it into disk mode to fix it. It also won't let me restore it because my computer won't recognize my ipod. What do I do?

Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • How can i undo the latest ios7 software update for my iphone4? It completely screwed up my phone!

I updated my iPhone 4 a few days ago to the latest operating system, iOS7. I've always proceed with the operating system updates because I assumed there were security fixes included as well as other fixes that were supposed to make the system run better. I haven't had any significant problems with updates in the past, except for some minor differences in appearance that didn't bother me.  This time but the update appears to have completely screwed up my phone.
My first complaint is, where the **** did all of my apps go?? I paid for them, and now they're gone. Are they hiding in the iCloud? I had over 3 screens of apps, and now I've only got 1 screen.
My second complaint is, what was wrong with the appearance of the interface and icons in the previous version? The new system has gone with opaque pastel-colered icons that, frankly, I don't like as much as the icons in the previous system.  And why does there have to be a gray band on the bottom row of icons?
My third complaint is everthing else on the phone is screwed up. Nothing works like it did before. Most of the photos I had on my phone have disappeared (iCloud??) Granted, my complaints about the appearance may seem trivial, but this is really annoying.
Can I reverse the iOS7 "downgrade" and go back to the good old days with the previous version when everything worked just fine and I was able to access all of my apps?

  • Graphics completely screwed up after 10.6.2 update

    Hi All,
I was using Numbers 08 earlier this evening and the graphics all looked fine. After allowing Software Update to install the 10.6.2 update tonight, and restart, I opened up Numbers to find that the graphics boxes, including pie charts, etc, are completely screwed up. And this is even true with the Apple templates in Numbers. With me doing nothing to them, the page looks nothing like the template sample should, or as displayed in the thumbnail window.
I restarted a second time to see if this might help, but it did not. Same results.
    Any thoughts???
    -Sol
    Anyone else seeing this.

    Hi Peggy,
Thanks for the reply and the suggestions. I did run 'Repair Permissions' but that had no effect on the issue. I did your suggestion of downloading the 10.6.2. 'Combo Update' from Apples download page, and that did indeed solve the problem. All Numbers graphics look normal again.
I'll keep that one in mind in the future.
    Thank You!

  • Completely Screwed up

I have the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra, the 40 GB version. I decided to Reload all my songs from my computer because almost none of them were tagged when i first put them on. The Jukebox would only have 4 of the 525 songs transfered to it, and then everyone of those songs would have an error in transfer. I decided to try an upgrade the Software vers, the Driver vers and the Firmware vers. I have Downloaded every thing off their official site and installed it, but it did not work. Also, the Firmware on the JB is completely deleted. I can't connect the JB to my computer. My comp doesnt detect it. So I am completely Screwed up right now, please, any help would be great.<SPAN class=gensmall>

If it's making the sound then something is being detected with regards to USB. Make absolutely sure it isn't appearing in Device Manager.

  • My ipod is COMPLETELY SCREWED after using camera connector

    g'day
After using the camera connector with my 30GB ipod, i can't do anything with it any more. when i select a song it doesn't play, it just skips through to the next and the next and the next... and i can't view any photos nor videos. ie my ipod is bloody useless!!!!
no, there aren't any errors with any of the songs etc and i've done the so-called five r's but to no avail
    HELP ME!!

My mini has been doing the same thing lately. I'll charge it completley, not touch it for a day, then when I go to the gym, it tells me that it's dead. It will always come on but I rarely get to the menu, it just tells me that it's dead. If you send it to Apple, it's something like $65 (there is a link here somewhere) but I'm contemplating just buying a new iPod. If I understand correctly, they don't fix your iPod if it's doing this, they just send you a new one...they don't make the mini anymore so am I going to get a Nano in it's place? I don't know, that's why I'm more than likely just going to buy a new one.

  • Audio completely screwed up on my ipod, how can I fix this if I can?

so, I find myself unable to hear out of the right side of any head phone set I try in the video ipod I have. I mean, this thing is only two years old (almost two, more like 1 and 3/4), but it seems to be failing pretty hard. What can I do to halt its rather steep deterioration? I don't want to have wasted nearly three hundred dollars on some crappy machinery that lasts two years.

A fairly common complaint and is due to a bad headphone jack (it is always the right side that goes out). You will have to replace the headphone jack yourself or send it off to a place to have it done.
An internet search for "iPod Repair" will turn up a number of places that sell parts and/or can replace it for you if you send them the iPod.
    Good luck,

  • HELP ipod is screwed

2 days ago while listening to my ipod i noticed that - like a CD too much used- some songs appeared to have errors in them skipping parts of song or evens goin wild and skipping several song. Gradually this became worse without my ipod being able to play a song fully. I tried running McAfee on it which didn't notice any virusses. Then my laptop didn't recognise my ipod , then it did but i was unable to check the different folders on ipod. I tried to reformat my ipod via my laptop but that doesn't seem to work. When i turn the ipod "on", the disk starts spinning but it hampers and i always hear click inside but doesn't seem to find location and spinning of disk stops for few seconds ,,then it starts again... Is this problem with hardware of the hard disk or (hopefully) just a software bug? What can i do to know and/or solve problem? Plaese don't tell me the hard disk is screwed. I dind't drop it, banged it or anything so it would surprise me if the disk was physically damaged.

    Hey
thx for answer, i think ur right , i tried to format the ipod by using my windows and ipod is found on "my computer" window, can even click to format, it then start to format the disk taking like 40min but at the end something goes wrong cos windows says he can't terminate format; result is that all data on ipod has been erased , only the original settings and software is on disk. I then put some music on ipod but problem still occurs (stuttering of HD). What wuld u advise? can this be fixed with format that is allowed to terminate completely and how do i do this? or is my disk physically damaged? are there other repair programs or diagnostic tools which will allow me to determine whether this problem can be solved or if my ipod is just completely (physically) screwed? I hate it cos my warranty just expired 2 weeks ago and i didn't drop it, bang it or otherwise harm is physically.... these things don't screw up themselves just like that? it can't be...
anyway what else can i try, don't have mac computer so can't really try to format on that... i tried disk doctor but that program won't start to run on that disk..
is there anything else i can use like in ms-dos? few months ago i had a problem with my external HD which many believed to be a hardware problem but after a good format it now runs smoothly again... was only able to format using ms-dos , windows wouldn't recognise the drive.. guess it's my last hope
    plz help if u can
    thx

  • I need help! my ipod is screwed because i tried to fix it myself

Huh, here is the whole story. I have a fairly new dell computer thats on Windows XP Pro OS. Im not technologically ******** and i go to high school. Around sometime in july i bought my very first ipod (5G U2 Special Ed.). I set it to the auto upgrade setting and transfered all of my cd's into it. Everything was fine until i tried upgrading my ipod for the second time around last week. It downloaded(uploaded, whatever) a fraction of the first new song then it froze. The do not disconnect screen stopped blinking and itunes froze. Then the typical "cannot upgrade mike's ipod, the required file cannot be found" message shows. I click ok and click eject ipod. It re updates it and freezes again. I try the safetly remove hardware thing on the toolbar of windows this time. It tells me it cannot remove the hardware cause its currently in use. Itunes freezes. I restart my computer and the ipod is still frozen at the do not disconnect screen but i do it anyway. It remains frozen. I reset it. I have a busy highschool life and just continued listening to my ipod that worked just fine. I try updating it again later that week and the same situation happens again. I tried again today and it happened again. I read all of the disscussions and forums and find others in my same predicament. Before i actually found the true soultion, i started to restore my ipod. The window says something resembling "please wait a while while your ipod resets itself fully". I see the apple logo and a download bar on the bottom. once downloaded the bar disappears (the logo remains). It stays that way for about an hour. I read another thread about another guy having problems with restoring his ipod that were identical to mine. The solution was to shut down the computer, disconnect your ipod, and try it again. Im lazy and thought i could just remove it and reset it because i thought it was finished restoring itself so i just removed and reset it. The apple logo appears and you hear strange noises like its trying to reboot. Then the noises continue. It appears the ipod is trying to restart again and again. Then the noises stop and the ipod freezes there. Reseting the ipod just restarts the whole process again. I was trapped. Luckily there was an article (id 61584) on this website adressing that same issue. It told me to put it into disk mode and restore it. I connected it onto my computer and followed the steps to put it on disk mode. Apparently i put it in disk mode. My ipod displays a do not dissconnect message in what seemed to be the same color and font as the first gen ipod. I try to restore it and it gives me an error message. I try again and again and it gives me a random error message each time. Now when i reset it, it goes back to disk mode. I screwed up my ipod and fear i may have to service it. The only thing is, i did not buy the protection plan. If you cant tell me how to fix this ordeal at least give me an estimate of how much this will cost to fix it. My parents are already paying for my sisters tuition for college and next year will have to do the same for me(U. of Penn. Baby) They will not be able to afford another ipod. You all probably think im ******** or something right now, but i guess i deserve it. Anything, anything, any advice at all you can give to make my life less stressful.
Oh yeah! in that article (id 61584) the itunes library picture has the band finntroll. I love finntroll! I really cant understand though why a brutal finnish black/folk metal band would be on the sample library. This is also my first post, yeah.

If u haven't resolved this issue yet, I just did.
    What I did:
    1. Toggle the hold switch (turn it on and off)
    2. Reset to 'Disk Mode'
by pressing the 'Play' and center buttons
    simultaneously
(it may take a couple of trials to get it right)
    3. Update iPod with latest iTunes in Disk mode.
    4. Incase the 'Can't find firmware' error msg is displayed,

My iPod Nano that I got in 2007 has been working completely fine until today, when I went to turn it on and nothing happened. I plugged it into the computer, which wouldnt regonize it at first, then after about 10 minutes told me that my iPod had been corrupted and needed to be reformatted. I clicked to reformat it, but it did nothing...any help??

    Thanks.
I did the whole restore thing, and it showed no data on my iPod, but when I went to load songs onto it, it gave me an error message (something about a write error? i cant remember what it was exactly).
I ended up just unplugging the iPod, and when i tried to plug it in again, Windows recognizes it, but not iTunes.
I still have a few days left until my 1 year waranty is up (i think) so i might just try to send it in to get repaired. any advice on that?
