IPod, Contacts and Comparing to Palm Pilots/PDAs

Pretty easy to now say that the iPod is no longer an "MP3 player", but rather, a personal entertainment device. There are a few things I am not liking, although there are many things I love about it.
CONTACTS
Is there anyway of searching my contacts, where after one word entered it goes to that letter? It is really annoying to have to cycle through 100's of names to find a number, since not all are where they should be.
Any third party software? Can we change themes?

Migrate your data to M$ Outlook, then sync with your iPod.. The Search tool is your friend.

My iphone contacts got synced with my daughter's ipod contacts and she deleted my contacts and now they are gone from my iphone.  How do I recover my contacts?

First, your daughter needs her own iCloud account, otherwise her ipod will sync will all your data (email, calendars, contacts...).  If you have a backup or a copy on your computer, you could turn off iCloud syncing on your iphone, then restore from your contacts via iTunes.  After you get a new account for daughter, you can then turn on iCloud.

No, there is nothing to change the default city that I can see.  In fact, you can change very little in the way of defaults.  Time, date, date format, that's about it:-(

  • Address Book Lost Contacts and Keeps Crashing

Last night I was moving a contact into an existing group and when I did that contact name changed to "no name." When I clicked on it, ALL of my contacts disappeared. My Address Book was empty. I've retrieved some of my contact information from my Palm Pilot, but now Address Book keeps crashing. Here's what I've tried:
    1. Repaired Permissions - no luck
    2. Moved Preferences files - no luck
    3. Moved com.apple.addressbook from Cache folder - no luck
I've read that sometimes fonts can cause problems, but to my knowledge, I've not deleted or installed any fonts since I purchased my ibook in August.
Does anyone have any other ideas for me to try? I really want to get this working.
    I'd sincerely appreciate any help.
    Thank you,
    kat

Yup. I lose contacts too, when syncing with my phone. Also crash when editing. Altho it seems that hitting command-L before editing helps the crash issue.

  • Ipod touch and the palm pilot z22

My palm pilot z22 is reaching the end of its life cycle. Can the calendar, contacts, etc. be imported into the ipod touch?

Not directly from the Palm desktop. The Touch does sync with Outlook, however, so if you can change your sync conduit to sync your Palm with Outlook to get your data transferred there first, then Outlook Contacts and Calendar can indeed by synchronized with the Ipod Touch. I had a Palm TX and thankfully was already synchronizing to Outlook, so have had no problems. However, there is no syncing for Notes or To Do items on the Touch. There is at least one 3rd party option for syncing Outlook To Do items (KeyTasks from Chapura -- haven't tried it myself).
The option I have found for Notes that works well is to create a separate Outlook Contacts folder called Notes. Put the name of the note in the last name field and use the memo field for the note. I actually like this better than Outlook's native Notes, which are small yellow 'sticky' notes.
One thing that is NOT support on the Touch are categories. You can use them in Outlook itself, but they are not transferred to the Touch.

  • New iPod touch - How to make it a Palm Pilot

OK. My new iPod Touch (16GB) is on order (ordered on day 1) - I have my Mobile Me account up and running and my iCal and my Mail accounts are synced.
My reason for buying the new iPod touch is to replace my Palm Pilot (Tungsten E). I was able to export/import 6 years worth of Palm data to iCal – now I need to be able to use iCal on the iPod touch to see/edit my daily schedules on the road – and to sync and see them on several Macs at home and in the studio.
I just watched the new Apple video about the new iPod touch – and, frankly, it came across as a 1) a teen-age game machine, 2) a movie player, and 3) a music box. Nothing in the video promo spoke to iCal on a Touch – or using the iPod touch as a business tool – other than Safari and email.
There are a million new apps available, but I don’t have time to test them all. This is what I need:
    1) A iPod Touch version of Docs To Go. I want to make a document (file- text –letter) on my Mac (in Word, for example) – and then download it to the touch to read (and edit) on the road – and then re-sync changes made on the Touch with Mobile Me and my Macs.
    2) To Do lists that sync between Mobile Me – my Macs and the Touch – with the ability to make/edit the To Do from the Mac or the Touch.
    3) Search capability to find events, To-Dos, and documents (such as a letter) in the iPod Touch. That is a great feature of the Palm Pilot – I can see when I was last in a city with a simple search – or find a calendar entry with a customer’s name – even from several years ago.
    And:
    4) a Forum that addresses how to use the iPod Touch as a business tool – rather than as a game/music/video machine – essentially how to replace a BlackBerry or a Palm Pilot with and iPod Touch.
I have ZERO AT&T coverage where I live and work – so the iPhone is a no go for me. I will keep my Verizon cell phone and get rid of the Palm Pilot – if I can make the Touch behave as a tool rather than as a toy.
So – What APPS should I get ready to use?

    Hi,
I have done the transition from a Palm Treo to the iPod Touch. As has been said the Apps are not as mature as with the Palm. You do need to be creative. I went with OmniFocus, both the ipod app and the desktop app. The desktop app will sync with iCal but I feel it should be the master. Not the cheapest route but very solid.
Direct MS Word compatibility I haven't seen yet. It will be there I am sure. The Notes app works fine for writing and you can email notes to yourself and copy the text out to what ever program you choose. No cut Copy Paste yet either so real word processing is not a reality. Docs to Go was pretty good.
There is CSV touch that will load any CSV file. Excel sheets. Also the idb Datamaster pro. Worth looking at. It is a database system that can import and export again in csv.
I have PocketMoney to record financials. It will sync through QIF files with Quicken. I say sync but it really just imports and exports QIF files. Takes some creative handleing not to end up with duplictae transactions. I figured out a work around and it saves keeping the paper around till I get to my computer.
File Magnet is really great. Drag anything to it and it will be loaded for viewing ( only) on the Touch.
The sync with iCal, Email and Contacts is excellent. I use this system daily for all my appointments and work schedules.
I don't bother with the games but it is cool to listen to music in the car with one device.
Having real internet in your hand instead of the klunky Treo browser is so much better. Safari is functional enough to do my online banking.
iFlix is really functional for Netflix. My Weather for weather forcast. Gives local animated radar.
So.. It is a new platform. It will have growing pains but it is functional and innovative.
Browse the App Store. Most are cheap enough that you can try without costing too much. The reviews are mostly helpful if you weed through the jokers.
I carry mine all the time. It finds internet all over without me doing anything. Battery life is acceptable for the most part. Just listening to music it lasts plenty long. Wifi and constant browsing or apps will run it down quicker. Consider that like watching a video. I use it in my car with a TransPod FM adapter. It charges the battery while it is playing. Works out fine that way. I get a full day of use and then the night always on without any worries. The ride to work charges it up enough.
Hope this helps. I love mine.

  • How to force a restore of contacts and calendar events from Palm Profile? (and memos and tasks!)

Yesterday I had to do a partial erase restart of my beloved Palm Pre.  In the past I have had to do full data restorations, and have had no problems at all.  This time, however, my Pre did not recover the dozens of contacts saved in my Palm Profile, nor did it recover any of the Palm Profile calendar events (and all my memos are gone, as well as tasks).  I've tried using the "synch" button in the contacts preferences dialog box, but it did nothing.  Does anyone know if it is possible to "force" a full recovery of your data from the Palm Profile backup, or if there is a way to access that data online somehow?  Much of my contact data I have successfully migrated through seven previous Palm PDAs and phones...it would be too painfully ironic if I've now lost all of that data just because I bought a Palm Pre and trusted the Profile backup system...

  • Contacts and Calendar not synching. (Centro, Windows XP, Palm Desktop 6.2.2) Please help!

I originally posted on the Hotsync forum, and it was suggested that I post my question here.  Important information:  My office uses Microsoft Outlook Exchange, and I have my Centro set up to get my emails.  It also wants to sync my contacts and calendar; however, that is completely unneeded for my purposes.  I need to synch my Contacts and Calendar with my Palm Desktop.  If there is something I have to check or uncheck to do so, please tell me how.
    This is my original post:
"When I hotsynch, my memopad, my documents to go, everything seems to synch except my contacts and calendar.
After a few hours on the phone with tech support at sprint, we went for the nuclear option, hard reset, and the temporarily solved the problem, but now it has returned.
    Information that might be important:
I'm getting a failed to backup 1 file error>PmTraceDatabase>Protocol Error: Handheld file could not be opened (4004)>SYNCERR_FILE_NOT_OPEN.  This may or may not be relevent.
Anyway, I appreciate any help with this.  I depend on this PDA phone to keep me organized and there's a slight and embarrasing touch of panic to how I feel now that it is not working correctly."
    Post relates to: VisorPhone

Okay, I'm continuing to do research on this, and here's my suspicion, maybe true or maybe false.  When I set up versamail to get mail from my office's exchange server, it also configured my contact list and calendar to sync as well, and synching with the the exchange server and synching with my desktop software are mutually exclusive.
If this IS true, then hopefully there is a way to set it up so I synch my email only with the exchange server, and leave my contact list and calendar configured to synch with my desktop software.
Any feedback or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Trying to move palm pilot info to iCal and address Book

I want to export the info from my palm pilot so that it can be moved into an iPhone.

Thank you for your reply, which was helpful in an unexpected way.  I had been trying to do some Google research and had already tried some things I found  but couldn't make anything work.  When you mentioned VCARD files, I then tried to move the contracts into VCARD by exporting them from Palm Pilot.  Each time I tried to do that, the Palm software "unexpectedly quit", but in the process I saw that there were something like 1,786 contacts in my PP.  This led me to realize that many of those contacts are no longer in my life and let me conclude that it's time to get an iPhone and start a new life.  I will leave the PP software in my computer in case I need to refer back to that info and stop trying to move everything into the new phone.  So thank you for that!
BUT this also made me think that my computer is overloaded - I upgraded from OS 9 to OS 10 Snow Leopard about 6 months ago. The computer has seemed  sluggish lately, and the last time I tried to do a softward update, I got this message: "You need 4.43 GB of available space to download and install upgrades.  Try removing some files from the startup disc."  You may have figured out that tho I've had macs for years, I'm still a novice.  You sound like an expert, so maybe you can tell me how to remove files from the startup disc and what I should remove.
Thank you again for your help, and Happy New Year.

  • My daughter got a new ipod touch and set it up using my apple id.  It sync'ed and got my contacts, so she went ahead and deleted them off her ipod.  Unfortunately, my iphone then 'synced to the cloud' and I lost all my contacts.

My daughter got a new ipod touch and set it up using my apple id.  Once she sync'ed it, she had all my contacts, so she went ahead and deleted the ones she didn't want.  Unfortunately, my iphone then sync'ed to the cloud and all my contacts were wiped out (the ones she deleted).
So, I wiped my iphone and did an icloud backup/restore.  This restored all my apps, but my contacts are still the ones from when my daughter did her update.  It doesn't appear as though I got back my contacts, even though I chose an icloud backup from before the deletion.  Logging into icloud shows the reduced/deleted contacts, not the full list I had, and I can't see a way to revert back to an old copy.
Any ideas?  I thought restoring from the cloud would have done it, but the contacts I got were the 'current' copy, not an older/archived copy.
I'd appreciate any ideas.  None of the articles I found seemed to address retrieving an 'old' copy of your contacts from the cloud.

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.
