IPod could not be identified properly

Please help. I'm running Windows XP Pro X64. I just got my new 5th Gen Ipod Nano, and updated to itunes 9.0.
Every time I plug the ipod in I get the following error:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
I've uninstalled itunes and reinstalled, still same error. Note: the ipod does not show up as a USB drive, until the following:
1) I get the above error
2) I restart the ipod service
3) Unplug and replug in the ipod
4) Now the ipod shows up as a USB drive
I've also tried:
1) changing the drive letter of the nano (saw it in a post somewhere else)
2) restarting
3) changing USB ports.
4) Reset the ipod, hold 'menu' and the center button
5) Reset the ipod using itunes on the mac mini
I realize itunes has some compatibility issues with X64, and I've been successfully using my 1st ipod mini for a few years, yes even on x64. I sync it almost everyday (update my podcasts). This is incredibly frustrating. My mini still syncs just fine even with itunes 9.0 on x64.
I have successfully sync the new ipod nano on a mac mini using the same USB cord.

It's possible to install MacDrive 7, XPlay 3 or higher on the Vista o/s, & use their later USB driver to see the iPod nano in disk mode.
Things to check are any USB device not working properly from Control Panel, devices; uninstall these and any network adapter devices prior to connecting the iPod.
On the DELL E6400 & Business Vista, installing iTunes 9 to recognize the iPod nano 5th Gen, kept on bringing up the message 'could not be identified properly'. Strangely, now I cannot sync any Music from Media Player to the iPod or have songs recognized on it from a straight Explorer file copy in the iPod's disk mode! I have had to de-install iTunes, and lost my library of 2 years worth of music.
This is quite poor s/ware compatibility. I have to say; don't buy the E6400 either!!

    Rats!
Well close iTunes, and tell me what drive letter the iPod shows up as in Windows.
Maybe changing the drive letter to something else would help. Way further down in the alphabet, like Q or W.

  • TS3218 iPod nano: Error message saying that iPod 'could not be identified properly'

If I remove itunes and reinstall it will I lose all of my purchased downloads

I spend several hours removing and reinstalling iTunes, resetting my iPod etc.  This worked for me.
    1- Open Control Panel
    2- Go to Add/Remove Programs
    3- Remove Apple Software Updates
    4- Remove Apple Mobile Devices
    5- Remove iTunes
    6 - Re-install iTunes
I found that a few days earlier there was an update on Apple Software Updates and Apple Mobile Device which may have caused some sort of conflict.  After I re-installed iTunes all of the above programs were re-installed, my music was there and everything worked fine.

  • Itunes states "ipod detected but could not be identified properly" when I plug in my new nano. tried uninstalling/reinstalling itunes 6 times - get pop-up "itunes helper error" with abort, retry, ignore options. retry doesn't work

I am trying to connect my new nano to my iTunes account. I keep getting msg "ipod detected but not identified properly. disconnect and reconnect. if problem persists uninstall/reinstall iTunes". I've uninstalled/ reinstalled iTunes 6 times but keep getting the same msg.
when installing iTunes I get a pop-up "iTunes helper error" check access. with options to abort, retry, ignore. retry doesn't work. ignore installs iTunes but it doesn't recognize my nano. abort shuts down the download.

  • Upgraded to 11.1.4.62.  Now iTunes is saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly.  Disconnect then reconnect ..."  I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I stopped and started the service.  I reset the iPod.  When I put it in disk

I upgraded to 11.1.14.62 this morning.  Not iTunes is saying "An iPod had been detected but could not be identified properly".  I unlugged/replugged in.  I reset the iPod, I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I'ver tried three different cables.
When I put the iPod in disk mode it shows up briefly as a disk then goes away.
    Any ideas?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.

  • ITunes message: an ipod has been detected but could not be identified properly.

For some reason my ipod nano 7th generation will not connect to iTunes anymore. It comes up on my computer but iTunes will not "identify" it. I have tried resetting my ipod and unistalling iTunes then reinstalling and following the help intructions online. Anyone know how to fix this? Cheers.

I recently began receiving this message when i try to sync my ipod to itunes:  " an ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly."   Never had this problem before.  Have tried all troubleshooting suggestions.
Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

I recently bought some new albums and can't play them on my ipod

I just encountered the same problem on my 2 month old MBPro.  I found a work around by changing USB ports.  As for the actual cause or the reason why that worked, I dont know.  The USB port I was using works fine with my phone or other USB devices.

  • "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly" error

We have had five iPod Nano's installed via our home computer (Dell PC - Windows Vista):
one 2nd generation (currently being used)
one 3rd generation (not in use - was lost)
one 4th generation (not in use - was stolen)
two 5th generations (currently being used)
The iTunes 10.0.1 Update was installed during the first of the two 5th geneartions installation process.
We recently bought another 5th generation. When we went to install it, we received the error message "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly". The 2nd generation can access the entire library and download music but the two 5th generations are no longer able to access the library and download music. Basically, they can only be used to listen to the current music within does 5th generation iPod Nano's.
We tried everything that's been recommended in the Support section but nothing has worked in order to restore the capability of accessing the library and downloading music for the 2 generations....This is where we need HELP!!!
As for the new 5th generation, we have installed it into our laptop instead with no problems (so far). We've read that there is a way to move the iTunes Library from one computer to another which we hope this will be an option once we fix the issue of the two 5th generations.
If anyone can provide any recommendations please post. We have spent the better part of our weekend trying to fix this problem with alot of frustration along the way.
    Thank you

Uninstall everything from your pc that is published by Apple. This includes; iTunes, Quicktime, and Bonjour. I also had this problem and it is VERY frustrating. Then re-install iTunes of course.
