IPod could not be updated because the file is corrupt.
iTunes refueses to update my iPod touch to 2.0.1. The download appears in the que as 1.5kb (which it certainly isn't), and then after downloading, a message tells me the iPod can't update because the firmware file is corrupt. It also says to reconnect and try again, but that doesn't do anything. HELLLPPP.
See if anything here helps: What to do if iPod can't be updated because
the firmware file was corrupt or not found
That was the answer. A very easy fix when you know what to do. Thank you for your help.

The iPod could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt.
So i kept having this problem in this thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1226490&tstart=255
I decided that maybe doing a Restore on my iPod would maybe sort it out however i got that message "The iPod could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt." when trying to restore. I then searched apple and found out that deleting the 'iPod Software Updates' folder would sort it out, it didn't.
Now what's happening is when i try to restore it comes up saying i have to download this iPod Software 1.2.1 for iPod so it downloads and then when it's finished i'm still getting the error message saying the firmware file is corrupt.
What can i do now? any help appreciated please.this article actually sorted this problem out for me: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996

iPod version shown in iTunes as "4.3.4" (not listed in the OS drop-down associated with setting up this post. Appeared to download the update OK but as soon as it went to install it came up with "The iPod "xxxxx" could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible" Why and what do I do now? I'm pretty sure it was trying to install 5.1.1
- Are you updating clicking on the update button in iTunes?
Try a reset. Nothing is lost.
- Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Try deleting file and try again. It is located:

The iPod could not be updated because the firmware file could not be found?
I updated iTunes 7.0 and now I need to update the iPod software ver 1.2 and it won't install. I am stuck like Chuck. I've been working on this all day. Can't seem to find a resolution. I already went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and I got some tips but it didn't work. I un-install iTunes and re-install. Tried the 5 R's and nothing. I get a error message that says "firmware file could not be found" when I try to install the update and/or restore. Is anyone else getting this same error message?
Wow, after about 2 weeks I finally got my iPod to update on my very own PC. I followed the directions according to this document, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304309, and the iPod software was updated to 1.2 version. I had did this one time before and it didn't work. However, just a few minutes ago it finally went through. Yeaaaa!

I was syncing my iPod and got the message that an update was available. I downloaded the update and just as it was almost finished, I got an error message. It couldnt' update my iPod because the "firmware file is not compatible." What's up with this? I've never had any problems before with this iPod or with my iPhone 4S before this.
Update your iTunes to latest version.
Try restoring your phone in DFU Mode, if that doesn’t work then try downgrading your iTunes back to iTunes 8 and try again. -

Software could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt
I just received my iPad yesterday and I saw there was a new update to the OS(from 3.2.1 to 3.2.2). I tried to install it and after downloading the 450 MB file it gave me the error "The iPod "ipod name" Could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt", so I tried it again and again got hte same error; so I tried researching and saw several possible solutions, including re-installing iTunes, so I decided to try it on a different machine, same error. I don't want to keep downloading huge files, so I'm wondering if anyone knows some possible solutions? I've tried this on both a Windows XP and Windows 7 machine.
Hi, I had the same problem: firmware was corrupted on the update. I managed to fix it by logging in to my administrator account and leting iTunes do a reset. I have no media or apps on that iTunes account so it was relatively straight forward. Once reset and update was complete I logged back into my user account and let my usual iTunes account reinstal all my media and apps.
Be sure to backup your iPad before doing a reset.
This may help; you may also like to contact iPad Support for assistance. -
IPod could not be restored because the firmware file could not be found
Initial problem was no audio and skipping through songs at a rate of about 1 song per second.
Tried the 5 R's and that didn't help.
Installed iTunes 7 and then it wouldn't recognize the nano. Followed Apple's instructions when iPod not recognized, including uninstalling iTunes, uninstalling latent update installers, deleting the iTunes directory, clearing the recycle bin, deleting temp files, etc. Then reinstalled iTunes 7,
Plugged in my nano and Got the message, newer version of iPod software available, update software (version installed was 1.1.1 and newer version available was 1.2)? Clicked ok and that was the start of my troubles. That process failed and suggested that I restore to factory defaults (not exactly what I wanted to do, having to reload my songs, but went along).
Did a restore to factory settings and now get the message
The iPod could not be restored because the firmware file could not be found.
Anyone got any ideas how to update the firmware? I'm hopeful that a file can be downloaded to do this rather than sending in the nano to have it updated.

After an hour of updating software and a couple of hours of reading the forums looking for the answer, my eyes hurt, it's 2:30am, and I'm frustrated to the point of throwing this in the trash.
My kids have a shuffle and a mini and I've updated software on both with no problems before. If I realized I would have to become a system admin for iPods, I would never have invested.
<opinion off>Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Take a look at these two articles. The error messages are not the same, but they may help...

Hello, Im trying to update my ipod 3g 4.2.1 to ios 5.0.1.When I try to update, itunes says that 4.2.1is the lastest sofware for my ipod.I also tried to do it manually(shift+restor)itunes says that the"ipod could not be restore because the fimwire isnot compatible" I need some help on this.
The messages are saying you have a 2G iPOd. Those canonly go to 4.2.1. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPOd. A 32 can be either. To further identify yours:

My iphone 5s and model A1457 and even after i downloaded the IOS 7.1,2 itunes get me error "the iphone could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible"
some people saying that u cant get back and other saying yes u can
i wonder if i still can and how to avoid that error
IOS 8 Drain battery like **** -.-" & wireless not working well -.-", that's so annoying ...
(if someone got a solution, i would appreciate it, Thx in advance)You may have to arrange to take the product into an authorized
service agent for the iPhone (or other affected iDevice) to see
if they can apply the correct firmware update, to help resolve the
issue of upgrade; or if they have a way to put it as it was prior to
the attempted upgrade to a later iOS.
See all worldwide telephone support numbers
Contact a mobile carrier
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
Visit an Apple Retail Store
Pending some release of another update to the iOS, you'd need
to have someone's hands-on effort to correct the issues your
product faces now, before another round of upgrade attempt.
Sorry that I have no exact method to attempt to resolve your issue.
Good luck & happy computing! -
I received error message that 6 of my songs that I purchased on a workout album could not be copied because the file could not be converted.
How do I get these 6 songs downloaded to my ipod shuffle?I can think of only one reason a song would be "converted" while it is being loaded on a shuffle.
Select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES. Over to the right, depending on iPod model, go to the Summary or Settings tab. There should be a setting there that says Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC (the 128 kbps part may be adjustable). If that checkbox is checked, try unchecking it.
NOTE: This setting may allow more songs to fit on the shuffle, but for any converted song, the sound quality will become inferior. So I don't use it. -
