IPod Cover Flow can't handle ligatures.

While the iPod Albums menu can display Tool's Ænima properly, in the Cover Flow screen this album comes out as nima. Has anyone else noticed similar mis-renderings with ligatures or accented characters?

Yes, I have no problems with Blue Öyster Cult or Motörhead either. I've just tested the group - *Æ æ Œ œ Ǽ ǽ*. All displayed fine in Artist, Albums, Now Playing and Search menus but these two, *Æ Œ*, didn't show up when part of an album title in Cover Flow... For completeness I went on to test them as part of a playlist title or artist name and, go figure! they all displayed correctly everywhere. Putting things back as they were before I started testing and I'm back at square one - the title Ænima is displayed as nima. I can live with calling it Aenima but it's an odd bug that's for sure.

  • Cover Flow - can it have a black background?

I've just bought a 3rd generation Nano (product RED version) and I'm really pleased with it.
I do have one question though - can Cover Flow on the Nano have a black background? I'm sure I've seen the 3rd gen Nano working with a black Cover Flow background on some website somewhere and I'd like it much more than it being a white backing.
On another note, I really cannot understand what seems to be a angry bunch of haters who just have nothing good to say about it (the comments about the 3rd gen Nano on You Tube are nothing short of insane). You really have to see it in the flesh, it's better than it looks in pictures and for the price, what more could you want?

There doesn't appear to be anything in the iPod nano feature/user guide that says that you can change the background color (I'm talking about the downloadable 71 page manual).
As for the comments against the new nano, I don't completely understand some of the remarks either. I will note, however, that two threads that were started here to complain about the size of the new nano quickly fell silent after I pointed out that the original poster had made math errors and had used incorrect dimensions when trying to show that the new nano wasn't really "nano" anymore. As it turns out they have practically the same front surface area (0.07 square inch difference) which means that if the new nano was less than a millimeter smaller in either width or height it would actually be smaller than the 2nd generation nano. What I mean to say is that it is still very "nano" in size.

  • Ipod cover flow, some albums show up after the letter Z

Hi all, got a strange problem.
I have my ipod set to sort by artist in the cover flow.
However, some albums pop up after the letter Z.
There are over 1400 cd's on it, but a 30-something do this.
I tried adding "artist sorting"tag to the albums, but it still shows.
Trust by Elvis Costello for example shows up after the z, while there is no reason at all to do that according to the info.
Anyone who has any tips, escept deleting the albums and adding them again in the hope the problem disappears ?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The albums that appear after Z will be marked as compilations. See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist for details.

  • Cover Flow: Can I Change Video Clips' First Frame?

    Hi,
I've got a bunch of video files that I'm viewing in cover flow. However, seeing their first frames doesn't help much in giving me a clue about their contents.
Is it possible to select an middle frame in the video clip and have that be the image that pops up in cover flow? How?
    Thanks,
    Duck

Whenever I get a movie I always play it in QT Pro 7, select a typical frame, copy it and then paste it as the icon for the movie using GetInfo. Cover Flow respects these added icons, and that is what it displays.
If you only have QT X the process is a bit more problematic, since I have not discovered a way to select and copy an individual frame. You can't even do a decent screen shot, since if you pause the movie to take a picture of the movie, the idiotic control bar is inside the movie frame. However, if you pause it, then move the mouse off the control bar and click once inside the frame, the control bar will disappear and you can then do a clean screenshot. Open the screenshot in Preview, select all and copy, then select the movie file in Finder, GetInfo, select the wee little icon at the top and paste. Your movie will now have your custom icon displayed in Cover Flow, Icon view, and so on.

  • Cover Flow: Can I change a movie thumbnail to a different frame?

The frame chosen by the cover flow to represent a movie is often perfect, but occasionally provides ambiguous information.
I was wondering if there was a way, hopefully an easy way, to change the frame that is used?

There is another very simple way to get the exact artwork you want to be displayed for your icon. You may have noticed that the earlier suggestion of changing the "Poster" requires the movie to be "saved" again. This can be very time consuming. And this doesn't address artwork for files that do not open in Quicktime.
    See if this helps.
You can paste any image you want onto the files icon. Find that image that you want and copy it to the clipboard (there are several ways to do this, depending on the source of the image - hopefully, you'll already know how to copy the image)... Next, in the Finder window, highlight the file you want add artwork to. Then, in the FILE Menu, select GET INFO. At the top of the subsequent window, you will see an icon... the same icon as is being displayed in the Finder. Click on this icon once, to highlight it. Then Paste your artwork on top... bam!.... You're done.

  • IPod photo 30GB can only handle 20G of music

I'm recycling an older iPod for all kinds of good reasons.
    It's a 30GB iPod photo.
I restored the unit yesterday and synched.
If I use the standared iTunes settings, the message tells me the iPod has a 27.9GB capacity. There's an overcapacity message. No surprises there.
If I switch to Manually manage music I'm told there's 21.1GB of music and 6.1GB of other - even though I've only stored music on the iPod.
There's also 0.76GB free. I don't appear to be able to add more music.
Is there a way to recover the missing 6 or 7GB without a fresh restore?

    Thanks for trying to help.
I've found the ipod control/music folder is the only top level folder storing more than a few dozen kb. That's a good start. Sadly it contains 50 sub folders each containing around 500Mb never much more than 1GB - I know because checked every one of them manually.
I also looked in every folder - all the files are either mp3 or m4a format, so no obvious non-music files.
Interestingly the Music folder has 26.8 GB, which is close to the total of music + other listed in iTunes.

  • IPod Touch 4 can't handle iOS 6 AppStore, will iOS 6.0.1 fix it?

Ever since I've updated to iOS 6, the AppStore has been a memory hog and crashes when it loads 25 more results after the initial 25 that gets searched. If I don't kill all the apps and reboot before I search the AppStore, it crashes before I can view any of the initial results. I use an app called AppShopper to search the AppStore.
Before I update to iOS 6.0.1, will it solve this problem or make it worse?

Thar is correct. Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple. If you try you will get the 3194 error.

  • The "Cover Flow" / "Album Artist" duplicate albums problem on the iPod

    Hi Guys,
I've made some research about this issue and got to some interesting conclusions.
    DISCLAIMER:
    1. I searched the web and found people describing this problem since 2006 till 2009 and the solution always revolved around not using the "Artist" and the "Album Artist" tags like they should be used.
    2. I did a lot of testing, including re-writing the ID3 tags in different versions and formats to rule out any issues around the tags themselves.
    3. If the stuff I'm going to describe is already well known than sorry about that, I just couldn't find it anywhere.
    PROBLEM:
An album that has a single Album Artist and different Artists appears several times in the iPod Cover Flow although it looks just fine in iTunes.
Tagging the tracks as "Part of a Compilation" only partially solves the issue since the album will appear in the iPod Cover Flow as a Compilation showing up in the end and not together with the "Album Artist" like in iTunes and like it should.
It seems to be a simple issue around the way the iPod uses the "Album Artist" tag but it also seems to be around forever and it's strange Apple hasn't looked into it.
    RESEARCH:
Since I just bought a new iPod Classic, I was again looking into this issue and now I was getting annoyed, strangely the behaviour wasn't the same for all the albums that were suffering from the problem. I found that when the Artist was a combination of, for example:
    Album - AlbumX
    Album Artist - ArtistX
    Track 1 - ArtistX
    Track 2 - ArtistX Feat. X
    Track 3 - ArtistX
    Track 4 - ArtistX Feat. Z
Track 10 - ArtistX Feat. XYZ
In the iPod Cover Flow I got ONLY TWO different albums, one with "ArtistX" and another one with "ArtistX Feat. X".
Well, this was very different from the normal behaviour when the artists are all completely different, in which case you get X amount of albums according to the X amount of different artist names you have.
    CONCLUSION:
It seems to have something to do with the dot ".", I reached the conclusion that for Artist interpretation in the iPod when the Artist tag has a dot "." then it stops interpreting. That means that if you had a "." after the main artist name than it will show only once, like in the above example:
    Album - AlbumX
    Album Artist - ArtistX
Track 1 - ArtistX. <---- NOTICE THE DOT
    Track 2 - ArtistX. Feat. X
    Track 3 - ArtistX.
    Track 4 - ArtistX. Feat. Z
Track 10 - ArtistX. Feat. XYZ
Then in the iPod Cover Flow it will show up only once as AlbumX - ArtistX.
I prefer to use the dots instead of just removing all the "Featurings and similar" since I can still see it normally if I play the track.
So, in the end, a combination like this in your "Artist" tag: "Album Artist"."Artist" would solve the problem in the iPod.
I would love for Apple to solve this issue and I hope this helps.
Has someone else noticed this or am I going crazy?
    Thanks!

sometimes the official title of a release does include the Feat. Guest info.
Yes, but only in some (or many) cases. There seems to be no consistency here, as if Apple were paying no attention about where to put "feat. guest". And I guess most of the data in CDDB (Gracenote) still have "feat. guest" in Artist (correctly, in my opinion).
I quite agree that your workaround is the best workaround. I'm just too self-willed (obstinate?, I don't know the correct English) and don't want to pollute my Library with "wrong" data. Most of the problems would simply be solved if, just if Apple make iPods sort/group artists as iTunes do. Sorry but this is how I feel. I guess you can't help people like me. Thank you for your patience.
Anyway, we need a clear document from Apple describing what are the intended uses of various tags, and iTunes/iPods should obey this document. It seems for me that each Apple engineer is doing just what (s)he wants to do, without any guidelines.

  • Cover Flow of compilation albums not quite right on iPod Classic

Okay, so after receiving my new iPod classic 80gb the other day, I decided to go through and fix up a lot of my albums in iTunes to display properly in Cover Flow. I have lots of Various Artists albums and have marked all tracks in each album as part of a compilation so that they show up correctly in iTunes 7.4.1.2. Now, when I'm scrolling through Cover Flow within iTunes, these albums appear correctly as 1 entry of "Album Name", and then "Various Artists" underneath that.
However, when I move these tracks over to my iPod and then go to Cover Flow, it looks like instead of using "Various Artists" as the listed artist, it uses the artist of the first track on the album. So, for example, if track 1 were "Board Bangers - Cause the Beat's Hot", it would show "Board Bangers" instead of "Various Artists" as the album artist. However, if I click the middle button to "flip" the cover over to see the tracks, it correctly lists all the tracks for the album (even though it only lists the song titles and not the track artist).
Also, in iTunes, Cover Flow is sorted by album name, whereas on my iPod, Cover Flow is sorted by artist. I'm not sure if that's something I can change in the settings somewhere -- obviously, until this compilation CD "bug" is fixed, I'd rather sort by album name since I haven't memorized the artist of the first track for each disc, hehe.
Has anyone else experienced this or know of a fix for either of these issues?
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • Does the iPod follow the iTunes "sort filters" in Cover Flow?

    Two quick questions:
    1) Is it now generally agreed upon how Cover Flow is sorted on the iPod? (i.e. Is it by +album title+, by artist, or by +album artist+?) Can you change how it's sorted?
    2) If you have used the "sorting" tab feature in iTunes when editing song info, (for example, I have "album artist=Foo Fighters" in song info, but I also have album artist Foo Fighters sorting as "A1 Foo Fighters" for various listing reasons to keep it ahead of other album artists), will the iPod know to follow these sorting decisions?
The main reason I ask, is that I am digitizing my collection of 400+ cds, 100 of which are classical, 100 are musicals, 100 are rock, and 100 are other genres. I've had a lot of fun in iTunes with the Sorting tab in the song info box, which has allowed me to really sort my albums the way I want. For a classical album, like Bach's St. Matthew Passion, I leave the actual album title "as is," but then I have the Sorting album box sort this as "Classical, Bach's St. Matthew Passion," so that when I sort by album, all my classical cds show up together, in alphabetical order by album title, then my rock cds, etc. I do the same thing for album artist...I'll insert my own prefix, like "A1" or "Classical" or "Musicals" before the album artist name to make sure the genres stay together, even when I sort by album artist.
I'd like to use the iPod's Cover Flow, so I NEED to know the way the iPod Cover Flow will sort...If it sorts by Album Artist, I'll be much more careful with how I apply Album Artist "sorting" filters to my song info in iTunes. And I need to make REALLY sure that the iPod will actually abide by the iTunes Sorting tab, because otherwise all this tagging work I'm doing is for nothing.

As far as I can tall the tracks are initially sorted by the *Sort Artist* field. If this field doesn't exist it takes the value of the Artist field, with the provio that a leading "The " is ignored. Once grouped by artist the albums are sorted by the *Sort Album* field. Again, if this field doesn't exist it takes the value of the Album field with a leading "The " ignored. In iTunes artist names begining with numerals are listed first but on the iPod they are listed after those starting with A-Z and before the compilations.
When displaying the covers the iPod displays a new cover every time the album name and/or album artist changes. If you have one album by a given artist it should show once, even if there are guest artists listed in the artist field. If you have two albums however you may end up with four covers shown. This can be fixed by setting the *Sort Artist* to the main artist for each track with guests.
When the album is selected every track with the same album name is listed, most obvious if you flip over *Greatest Hits* and find 100+ tracks listed. To fix this you need to give every album a unique name. e.g. append ", Artist" to affected album titles. You can do this invisibly by making this change to the *Sort Album* field but it's worth noting this bug exists in iTunes too and it's probably better done visibly when using other views. The *Sort Album* field comes into it's own however when you want a group of albums displayed in a specific, non-alphabetical order. I have the Hitchhikers Guide radio series which I have reoganised to appear as single albums and set the fields as *Hitchhikers Guide 1*, *Hitchikers Guide 2* etc. to list them in the right order while still displaying the full album title.
Lastly the albums are displayed with the Artist field of the first track rather than the album artist. Looks odd on compilations and where the first track has a guest artist. No fix or workaround that I know of...
It took a while, but every one of my albums is listed in Cover Flow exactly once.

  • Cover flow and album sort issues

I just got a 80GB iPod classic for Christmas and I have noticed some annoying differences between iTunes cover flow and iPod cover flow:
    1. In iTunes cover flow, when you have songs with "Unknown Album", they clutter up the cover flow for each artist. In iPod cover flow, they are sent to the back of the cover flow in a nice little "Various Artists" cover. I like how this works on the iPod better.
    2. iTunes cover flow sorts by album artist, so you don't see a separate album for each non-album artist song.
For example: If I set my album artist for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" (don't ask why, this is how i like it sorted) then I will only see one "Saturday Night Fever" rather than one for Bee Gees, one for Kool & the Gang, etc.
iPod cover flow sorts by artist, so you see a separate album for each non-album artist song. I like the way this works in iTunes better.
    3. When sorting by "Album by Year" in iTunes, syncing the iPod doesn't seem to follow the same sorting. Albums are still sorted on the iPod alphabetically. I want them to sort by year on my iPod.
So I would appreciate it if someone could help me with all 3 of these issues. As you can see, sometimes iTunes is better for me, sometimes iPod is better for me.

    3. Playlists should be sorted in the same way as they are in iTunes. The Cover Flow order is fixed.
This is not the case, at least not with iTunes 7.5.0.20 and my 80GB Classic running 1.0.3 on it (current version as of this writing). In iTunes, under LIBRARY, I select Music, and I have my music sorted via *Album by Year*. This works perfectly in iTunes. I'll use my Soundgarden library as an example, as it shows the problem nicely.
    *_iTunes order_:*
    Ultramega OK
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Badmotorfinger
    Superunknown
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Down on the Upside
    A-Sides
That's ordered by date and is perfect. +Ultramega OK+ was released way back in 1988, while A-Sides was released nearly 10 years later in 1997. In Cover Flow View it works great. However, in the iPod it's sorted alphabetically, which is completely wrong:
    *_iPod Classic_:*
    A-Sides
    Badmotorfinger
    Down on the Upside
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Superunknown
    Ultramega OK
This is totally wrong. And I haven't yet found a way to force it.
Apple, please, this shouldn't be that difficult.

  • Sorting Cover Flow

    Hi
I know in iTunes we can change the sort order of albums. But how do you do change the sort order of albums on the iPod when you are in the 'Cover Flow' menu?
    Sam

Cover flow order on the iPod is fixed as Sort Album by Sort Artist. Where Sort Album or Sort Artist are blank they assume the corresponding value of Album or Artist. Artists are sorted A-Z, numerals, compilations and albums are sorted A-Z then numerals. You can only affect the iPod cover flow order by changing the relevant fields in the tags rather than via any other options. If you want to put a particular artist's albums in a non-alphabetical order the easiest way is to preprend a sequence number in the sort album field, much like track numbers are used to set the order of tracks.

  • Removing "Unknown Album" from Cover Flow

Is it possible to remove any albums that don't have names (but are named "Unknown Album" on the iPod) from Cover Flow, but still keep those songs on your iPod? The "Unknown Album" art clutters Cover Flow...I don't mind it in Now Playing but in Cover Flow, it's kind of an eyesore.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. After posting this, I realize that on the iPod, all the "Unknown Album" songs are put at the end of the cover flow in Various Artists - Unknown Album rather than cluttering up the cover flow. This will work for me. On iTunes, however, it still clutters up cover flow. I find it odd that iPod cover flow and iTunes cover flow act differently.

I am a Chinese user of iTouch and I have found a bug with the cover flow.
In the normal mode, there is only 1 album. But when i switch it to the cover flow, it has more than one, all of which have the complete album after it.
    what's still peculiar is that
