Ipod crashes, no reaction, what to do?

Hi@all,
my ipod video (30GB) crashes. This happens always when playing the same songs. After the crash at the display everything is freezed (time counter isn´t moving, but you can hear that the harddisc drive is still working). It is impossible to change the songs or do something else. After reseting my ipod it is again possible to use it but when I am playing the same songs it crashes again. It seems to me that a cluster or a sector of the harddisc is damaged. What can I do?
Thanks and all the best

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

Please help me out as this is very irritating. This has been happening for the last 20-30 minutes. It had roughly half battery left.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    - Regarding the apps you previously had installed, your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
    - Otherwise, as you found out, there are not that many apps still compatible with 4.2.1. However,Safari, mail and music work like they originally did.

  • After Leopard, sync iPods crash

I have two iPods: An iPod nano 1GB and an iPod 15GB
Both iPods crash when syncing with iTunes, and I can't use them anymore because well they are in a stage of rebooting or something.
iTunes says about my iPod nano:
    - iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
    - I click the restore button.
    - Then it says: The iPod "iPod" could not be restored because it is busy.
    - I click OK.
    - iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
    - etc. etc.
I had the same problem with the 15GB iPod but after restoring iTunes doesn't read the iPod at all.
    Someone?

Both my iPods are dead, no reaction what so ever. But thx anyway.

  • IPods crash and can't back up library - HELP

I have had an iPod mini for 1.5 years. My spouse got an iPod (30GB video) recently. When we switch between them to update songs from one library, the iPods crash and have to be reset (even that takes a few tries following instructions on iPod help).
I tried circumventing the problem by copying the library on my laptop from our PC (to have one iPod with one computer, both have XP Pro) with the USB drive but the library won't copy from USB drive to the new iTunes. (it will play songs from USB but won't copy them).
    1. Can I backup the library on another computer?
    2. What is the safest way to create a backup library (CDs in my experience may not last long)?
    3. If we update the computer (hopefully soon) will that mean that we can't copy the library to a new commputer and will lose all the songs we bought?
    4. How can we prevent either iPod from blocking or crashing?
Thanks for any advice and help.

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

  • IPod crashing with certain Apple Lossless files

So my iPod crashes sometimes when playing some ALAC files. It's up to date, I've scanned it, formatted it numerous times, and have done all I can thus far. read: I've troubleshooted. Can't figure out why it's crashing. It seems to like files that were recoded from FLAC to ALAC. They play fine in iTunes though. Whats the deal?
Also, when I enter my serial number into the warranty check form, it says it can't find the serial number...

I might have found a solution. I was having the same problem. FLAC files converted to ALAC would crash the iPod. I tried several conversion program without success. I finally tired Max 0.7.2b and it's working.

  • IPod Crashes while syncing and fully charged

    Hi,
My Ipod crashes when its fully charged and syncing to Itunes. Anyone know how to fix?
    Thanks,

Well, I tried the five R's. My iPod still crashes out after about a 1/4 of a gig gets synched up.
I get an error message "unexpected error unable to write to ipod -124" or something like that.
What's strange is my iPod will be fully charged. Then, in the couple minutes most the iPod says its low on battery. -- I had a battery replaced only about a year ago.
Has anyone come across this problem?

  • IPod crashed. Need help gettin my songs back when computer will NOT sync with iPod

My iPod crashed and now I can't get all my music off iTunes to put back on my iPod, also I can't get my iPod and computer to sync. What should I do? I spent over $200 for a new 8 GB 4th gen.

    Hi Ashley...
    My iPod crashed
You need to restore your iPod before trying to sync with iTunes.
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software
If the iPod won't show up under Devices left side of the iTunes window in the source list, try here >   iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

It is technically not abnormal to have that many crashes, but when they first started a couple of months ago for me, there was usually one or two per week. As of yesterday, the started being more and more frequent. I have tried everything you said before. Unfortunately, that didn't do anything to my ipod. I looked it up here and I saw many people saying it is a hardware failure that it may be caused by jailbreaking or not being updated to the latest version. I currently am in 6.1.3 and I didn't jailbreak my ipod. The main reason is only a hardware failure with the Darwin Kernel.
I really hope that you bought your ipod less than a year ago or I'm not sure if they will give you a new one because of warranty.

  • IPod crashes after attempting to play a video or song!

Alright, I was watching a video on my iPod, when suddenly is freezes and starts making a screeching noise. I reset it, and tried to play it again. All I get is a black screen. I reset it again, and tried to play a different video. Same result. Then after resetting it again, I tried to play a song, and the same thing happens. I tried to play some games, and the default games work fine, but the games downloaded from iTunes don't work. So I restore the iPod in iTunes, and that worked out fine, but when I tried to sync my iPod, Windows says that it can't save it to E:iPod and try saving it somewhere else. I had never had this problem until the iPod stuffed up. Can someone please tell me what is going on, and how it can be fixed?!?

I am quite new at Logic and have two questions:
    1
When I bounce a Logic project to iTunes, I have no problem listening to the song on my computer - in iTunes. But when i sync my iPod and then click on the song there, the iPod 'crashes' (needs rebooting) - and when it's ready again, nearly all the battery power has gone.
I have tried most of the options when bouncing ... aiff, wave, mp3, m4p etc ... all of which give the same result.
Sounds like a F^&*ed up iPod. IMO.

How come the 2,000 page Logic manuals - as far as I know - never touches upon the subject of mastering?
Because Logic is mainly used to create music / post production. Not so much for mastering. The guys who created Logic are not mastering engineers..but musicians.
If you want to master with Logic, you CAN. Go get a good book on mastering... there's a few out there.

Hi, i am having a problem with my iPod. not sure of the make or model. The screen seems to pixelate then the iPod crashes. I am able to restart the iPod and it seems fine when i turn it back on, but after a few seconds it pixelates and crashes again. Can any one help? has any one else experienced this problem?

And if I can't put it on my ipod how do I get my money back? I registered my ipod on iTunes, why was a song I can't put on my ipod even offered to me? What a rip?

Because you can only synce with one iTunes library and you are switching libries by using the new computer. To nake this yyour syncing computer:
    - Move all the media(apps, music, synced video and photos etc) to the new computer.
    - Connect the iPofd yo the computer and bake a backup fo the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes doe not include media.
To move mdia to the new computer see:

    Command-Option-Escape does the same as

It opens a floating box that lists current major Applications and their status (e.g., Not responding) and allows you to force quit any single Application or re-launch the Finder.

Crashed meaning it will not start now? Try resetting the iPad and go from there.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Hmm.. Thank you for the response.
Have you tried using the iPod with another user account or computer, to help narrow down whether the problem lies with the computer, account, or the iPod itself?
Maybe try reformatting it, using the tools provided by Windows. Instructions on how to reformat your iPod can be found in this article.
