Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)

Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Frost

hi Frostine!

we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)

  • Windows "Blue screen of Death" when booting computer attached to LabVIEW PXI realtime system

Good Morning (at least in the western hemisphere)!
I'm having a problem on two test systems where intermittently, at least on one machine, I get a Windows "Blue Screen of Death" error message when booting the machine connected to a PXI RT system. I reloaded the RT systems software yesterday (LV RT 7.1.1, NI-VISA 3.3.1) and am having this problem on two different setups, two laptops, two PXI chassis. Our short term work around has been to boot with the network cable removed at one end or the other, but these are the baseline models for a larger test system in the design/construction stage that will not be used by knowledgeable engineers but by (probably more knowledgeable!) technicians.  Any ideas would be a help

Blue screens are almost always caused by drivers and not by applications, so chances are there's a problem on the driver level.  The crash log file will be instrumental to diagnosing this problem.
Turn on the crash event logging as described in this Microsoft KB:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314084/EN-US/
...and then post the details from the crash found in the Windows Event Viewer here. That will help us narrow the problem down.

  • Windows XP sp3 + iTunes 8 + New iPod Classic 120GB = Blue Screen Of Death

    HELP
My PC has just upgraded itself with Windows XP Service Pack 3, I have downloaded iTunes 8, and just today bought a new iPod Classic 120GB so I could enjoy the new Genius facility (my old iPod was a 20GB model from 2005). However I keep getting the Blue Screen Of Death whenever I plug in the new iPod, even if I start-up the computer with the iPod connected.
I've read other threads about this topic, but I've only seen people reporting this issue with Vista, not XP.
    - I'm thinking of uninstalling and re-downloading iTunes 8. Will it retain all playlists, album artwork etc.?
    - I'm also thinking of trying to connect with the iPod manually set to disk mode. Will this help to begin with?
Anyone got a fix for this problem yet....Apple?

As a follow-up to my questions above, I've now tried uninstalling and then re-installing iTunes 8 direct from the Download link at Apple.com. I still get the BSOD. I also tried with the new iPod 120GB manually set to disk mode. Again, still I get the BSOD. I also unplugged a couple of other USB peripherals from my PC (writing tablet, card reader), checked for any more Windows XP Updates, but still get the BSOD.
    Anyone got any more ideas?

  • Windows blue screen of death crash during Boot Camp driver install

I have been trying to get Windows running under Boot Camp on my 2.66 GHz Alu iMac, but without success.
Boot Camp partitions the drive and Windows XP SP2 installs properly. I boot into Windows, and then insert my Leopard install DVD to install the Apple drivers.
The driver installation gets about halfway, then the machine crashes with a blue screen of death and restarts automatically. It puts me back in Windows, with no drivers installed.
I am installing the Boot Camp drivers from the Leopard retail DVD. This machine is missing the Leopard install/restore discs that came with it, and Apple want to charge £99 for a replacement set.
Is there any way I can get the Boot Camp drivers installed, or do I need to find a friend with the exact same machine and original system discs and use those?

    Aloha Adam.
Don't know whether this is helpful, but below is a list of drivers that are installed (as of Aug 08).
Also, if you have not already, you may find FAQ helpful, as well, at URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1656
Lastly, though they're a year old, the Update 2.1 is in .exe format, so if you can get it the .exe download package onto your installed Windows OS somehow (e.g., copied onto a CD, IF Windows can read it), you might stand a chance of alternate means of installing the drivers.
If this helps, please so indicate.

  • Plugging in Video iPod crashes WinXP (Blue screen)

I got my fiancee a Video iPod for Christmas. Unfortunately, WinXP crashes the moment the iPod is plugged in, giving a BSOD for usbport.sys. I've done a full reinstall of XP (needed to anyway), and all drivers/patches are completely up-to-date (yes, even checked the manufacturer's websites directly.) The really strange part is that the iPod connects correctly to my laptop. The issue goes beyod annoying though, since the computer with the problems is the PC we use as a media center i.e. it has the full audio/video library... any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Blackberry Media Sync causes Windows "Blue Screen of Death"

I recently suffered a very inconvenient (and costly) "Blue Screen of Death" just after  disconnecting my Pearl 8110 (using Media Sync. I run Windows XP).
I was wondering whether the Blackberry hardware or software had in some way caused this - and whether I should be concerned about using Media Sync in the future.
    Any thoughts?

Who knows? It is possible. There are a couple of threads on here about this (although not Media Sync, just DTM). Check out this thread: http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Desktop-Software/Upgrade-of-Desktop-software-resul...
They mention they found a fix for the problem they were seeing on XP (SP2, not SP3).
I consistently get a system crash immediately on plugging in my BB. I am running 64-bit Vista SP2. I haven't found a solution, yet. And, I have a RAID drive, and have to suffer through a several hour image rebuild after the crash, so I understand "costly." At least I can still use the machine while it rebuilds.

  • IPOD sync causes Blue Screen of Death

Every time I plug in my IPOD to sync I get a message about Drive x not being present. options are cancel, retry or continue. Any option just produces the message again for approx. 3 tries then my entire system goes to Blue Screen of Death and starts dumping memory. If I reboot with the IPOD still connected nothing happens. PC will not reboot until IPOD is disconnected.
    I'm currently at I-Tunes 10.1.2.17
    Thanks

Just in case you're still around, bubba ...
What text and numerical codes are you getting on the blue screen? If it's mentioning a specific filename too, let us know what that is too.
    For example:
    STOP 0x00000023 (0x000f00b5, 0xfc4af978, 0xfc4af7b4, 0xfeff4a6b)
    FATFILESYSTEM

  • Windows Blue Screen of Death

I keep getting the Blue Screen of Death when I am booted in Bootcamp.  Everything appears to boot fine.   I can load applications, but then shortly after using the Windows partition the Blue Screen of Death appears.  I have a MacBook Pro with retina display.  16GB RAM.  The Windows partition has 40GB dedicated to it.  Running Windows 7.  Everything was working fine last week.  I installed some new programs on the Mac Side. I also run Parallels sometimes.

I was able to fix this by restoring to a previous backup of the machine.  It must have been a bad driver.

  • Windows Blue Screen of Death when using PC Suite

I bought an E63 recently and by it's very nature I need to be able to link it to my laptop for uploading/downloading data. Laptop's a Sony FE11S running XP SP3 which connects successfully with the E63 via cable or Bluetooth.  Trouble is, I need to import all of my contacts from the PC to the E63 but in PC Suite, as soon as I click on <contacts>  <file>  <import> it crashes bringing up the blue screen.  Tried all the latest software versions including the E63, tried the Nokia PC Suite removal tools, tried only loading essential (windows) programs and still it crashes!  It was over two weeks ago that I contacted Nokia support and all that I've received is a succession of emails (from different people each time) telling me more or less to do the same thing and ignoring my comments and questions, eg. is their a log file somewhere that would tell us where the problem lies?  Tried telephone support a couple of times, hung on for 15 minutes each time only to be cut-off . . !  Beginning to regret I bought a Nokia if this is the extent of their so called support . . . unless there's someone out there who might have a clue as to what's going on . . . any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for that.  Screen says:
    100.21.110
    14-11-2008
    RM-437
    (c) Nokia E63-1 (223.02)
Going to "Reinstall PC Suite Support" it comes up with a message that says, "PC Suite Support is up to Date".
BUT, I have discovered that turning off Kasperski anti-virus everything springs into life without crashing!  So although I can now load my contacts, etc it would be nice to cure the problem so that I don't have to switch Kasperski off everytime I use PC Suite.  I tried putting PC Suite in Kasperski as an exception (accepted program) but that didn't help.  Any further thoughts?  Thanks.

  • Itunes crashed too Blue Screen when I connect Ipod to computer

My Itunes crashes to the Windows blue screen of death whenever I connect my Ipod to Itunes. I have ran tried both the solutions that are posted in the support section of this website, but none of those solutions seemed to work. I have an Ipod Classic and am running the latest version of Itunes (8.02 I think). The error code that comes up in the blue screen is:
    STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80154000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is quite frustrating.

Did you follow through all the links on the page?
You need to give information about exactly what you have tried in order for someone to help you.
I do not have an iPhone and know nothing about them so I can't give detailed help.
In general you tend to get BSOD with low level problems such as drivers or hardware issues. Are you up to date with the downloads from computer manufacturer's download site for your model of computer? If you follow the links there are various suggestions about the sorts of things that could cause trouble.
If you are getting a blue screen stop, it would help if you could post the exact error message. It should be some sort of numbers and text -
    0x(zeros/letters/numbers) (CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
    For example:
    Stop 0x05 (INVALIDPROCESS_ATTACHATTEMPT)
Also is a file name mentioned in the error message? If so give the exact file name. This is very important as it may identify the driver causing the trouble.
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), you can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery" section
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • HELP!!!!  Blue screen of death, IPOD a p.o.s.....

In advance - thank you to anyone who can help and/or explain things to me. I'm better than your average bear at tech stuff, but this is well beyond my knowledge area. It's a version of the same problem everyone seems to have:
    1. Ipod worked successfully for 14 months. (2nd generation, no clickwheel)
    2. Connected, ipod claims needs to be reformatted, crashed during.
    3. Apple store reset ipod for a mac, still needed to reformat for windows at home.
    4. Several crashes and various states later, am now repeatedly getting the following:
    - Computer recognizes Ipod, itunes and updater won't.
    - open updater to reset ipod, within minutes get blue screen of death.
    - sometimes only connecting ipod will produce blue screen of death
    - Error messages are as follows:
    STOP 0x000000EA THREADSTUCK_IN_DEVICEDRIVER (Q293078)
    - Event log is telling me the following:
"The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
"The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, has a bad block."
"The device, , did not respond within the timeout period."
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation."
    - What I have tried: uninstalled and reinstalled ipod/itunes, reset computer to previous dates settings, disabled/enabled through device manager
So, short of heading off to steve job's house to yell at him, what should i do?????? The apple store people claim the actual ipod is fine. is the problem my computer? the cord? the ipod?
Specs: Gateway 200, Windows XP, running through a firewire port.

I will be going away for a long time in a few weeks, as we travel across country for the last move of our lives (and then it will be several weeks before I get internet service again, so I may be off this forum for a month or more). But with you, JB, Charlie and so many others (Otto is in his periodic helpful moods right now :>) I'm sure I won't be missed.
my sympathies ... asset disposal in NZ and moving to NC with a few suitcases was traumatic enough ... moving from one apartment to another in the same
    b complex
after a year was not fun ...
now that Buegie's first aid kit is doing point-duty on some of the installer errors, i think i'm going to be able to spend some time over here again ... so some additional reserves will be available. (amazing how even when treating this as a full-time voluntary-work thing, it's still possible to get overwhelmed for a week or two ...)

  • Windows 7 - Blue screen of death after Boot Camp install

Hello! I have done some searches with no answers, so...
After installing Windows 7 from scratch I then install Boot Camp 3.0 which then leads to the Windows blue screen of death upon reboot. I then have to recover Windows to the previous state prior to installing Boot Camp.
    Help!?

Most likely, Apple HFS read-only, which is AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys - rename those and see.
You might want to run chkdsk after all this to make sure there are no errors with the drive and file system.
Windows Explorer will not accept HFS+ filenames with special characters and will "green bar" and hang when it does, too.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern.
    Rename AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys
By doing the following you will disable HFS mount / read mode on windows XP, Vista, 7.
Navigate to c:/windows/system32/drivers/AppleMNT.sys, rename the AppleMNT.sys file to something like AppleMNT_keep.sys or something of your likings.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern. It seems to happen on many systems.
    You find it in Windows/system32/drivers/AppleHFS.sys
Renaming to AppleHFS_disabled.sys will avoid the blue screens until you have found another solution or Apple updates Bootcamp 3
After renaming both myself because they are no longer "*.sys" or something? they are gone. In my case AppleHFS prevented Windows Backup from running to end and was causing error "some files skipped" and while some might find reading convenient, I prefer Windows not have even read-only access.
You can probably do better with MacDrive, or probably Paragon's HFS driver, to read AND write if needed, to HFS from Windows.

  • Hardware Acceleration Causes Blue Screen of Death - Resolution?

My computer running Windows 7 64 bit started crashing with Blue Screen of Death when Viewing YouTube videos or other videos like The Daily Show.  The "solution" was to turn off hardware acceleration.
The crashing appears to have stopped, but now the video quality is degraded and jerky, to the point that the video can just freeze while the audio continues.  So either I crash or I have poor video playback.
Has anyone found a solution to the BSOD that would enable me to re-activate hardware acceleration?
Symptoms with hardware acceleration enabled:  Computer will crash after playing a handful of YouTube or other online Flash videos.  Exact number of successful playbacks varies, but it will usually crash somewhere around the sixth playback (I cruise YouTube the way other cruise Wikipedia.)  The screen will first flash black on one video, and when the next video starts, the computer crashes.

  • Bad Pool Caller - Blue Screen of Death

Windows Blue Screens of Death (BSoDs) happen whenever your computer encounters something it doesn’t know how to process, so it shuts itself down to prevent any damage. Sometimes BSoDs happen once and you don’t see them again when you restart — however, this isnt always the case and a BSoD may show up repeatedly.
In this article we will look at issues causing a bad_pool_caller BSoD. What has happened is that a thread in the laptop's processor has made a bad pool request. This means that it’s asking to use resources that are unavailable, nonexistent, or in use by another thread. It could also mean that the pool header is corrupted — regardless of the particular error, it, like most BSoDs, is caused by driver issues.
Drivers are what makes your computer work. Every device connected to your computer, and nearly every component inside it has a software driver that determines how Windows interacts with your device. When driver issues are encountered- which is fairly common on new operating systems like Windows 8 — it can cause a lot of problems, but, fortunately, sometimes there is an easy fix.
    Recently Connected and Installed Device
Try to determine which device was last connected or installed before an error appeared. Often this can be a new peripheral device. Go to Device Manager (in the Control Panel) and find the driver for the recently connected peripheral device driver. From there, you can get Windows to search for updates, you can disable it, or you can uninstall it entirely. You can also disconnect the problem device and perform a system restore to before the device was connected and supporting software was installed.
    Recently Installed Program
If your drivers aren’t the problem, a recently installed program may be the issue. If you can determine what program you installed that started this, uninstall it or perform a system restore to before the program was installed, and, after a restart, you should be good to go.
    System Restore
    Windows 7 and earlier
    Windows 8
Any further issues that cannot be resolved may require your computer to be repaired.

Every time we try to connect his Nano it causes the PC to crash with this Bad Pool Caller message.
is the BADPOOLCALLER citing a specific file, Laurita? if so, what is it called? (exact spelling please.)
if it's not citing a specific file, let's try getting a minidump to the Apple engineers for a look.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing
