Ipod - damaged MBR?

Hi, I attempted to update my 5th generation iPod's software, but somehow the update screwed up and now my iPod is unbootable and unaccessable by Windows, Macs, and any program I have found except for one called Binary Bix Virtual Lab which will charge me $159 to restore the iPod's data... I can't simply use Apple's software to wipe the iPod and begin anew because I am currently studying abroad in Mexico and I was using my iPod as an external hard drive to store all the photos from my trip - something I dearly do not want to lose. Windows tells me that the iPod has not yet been formatted... iPod gives me the sad folder icon, but Virtual Labs software clearly shows all of my files still sitting inside the iPod, so I'm assuming the iPod's MBR got corrupted - anyway to work around this and recovr my files without spending all that money?
Thanks!

Hey, something similar happened to my ipod. I updated the software, and now when i try to watch a movie, it freezes after 31 seconds. It starts playing again in like 10 secondes but theres no sound. I restored my ipod and everything, but it still won't work like it used too. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

  • How is an iPod damaged by water: If it gets inside or just on the front?

I got a couple drops of water on my click wheel, i wiped it off (which might have put it in the wheel, yeah i should have dapped it) and yeah it seems to work fine. The volume doesn't jump around, and it doesn't skip but i was wondering i had an old iPod that gotta completely soaked and the click wheel wouldn't work. Did it not work because of the water damage on the outside (on the wheel, inside the creases of the wheel) or because it got inside from the bottom then damaged it?

It would be impossible to tell without taking the iPod apart. It all depends on where the water got to.

  • IPod damaged, "Invalid B-Node size"?

Alright, so one day, i plug in my mini after my bro went and got music on it from a PC, though I didn't know that, he had just given it to me. I plugged it in, it told me i had to restore, i didn't like the songs on it so i said yeah sure blah blah blah...
Then my dog knocked it off my desk and the cable ripped out of it. SO i plugged it back in and it said a bunch of stuff then the options to Eject, Ignore, or Initialize. I hit Initialize and found it as a hard disk in disk utility.
Yes, i use a Mac, and eMac to be exact. so i hit Verify disk and it says...
    "Verifying disk "".
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed.
    Verify completed."
Other than the " " at the ends that is exactly what it says, i don't have to option to repair the disk either...when i try to boot the iPod it has the folder with "!" and the URL to iPod support.
    Can anyone help? I'm 14 n' need my frickin music >: (
By The Way: iPod Updater does not notice my mini as an iPod, so i can't restore it that way, any help?

No you don't get it, my comp can't read it's 'volumes' so the iPod Updater doesn't even think one is plugged in, the iPod Updater just says, "Please insert an iPod." so there is no realy way to use the Updater that i know of.

  • Accidental iPod damage by other, can i claim on current valid warrenty?

I have a iPod Nano 4GB with Lanyard headphones, and at school today someone hit me in the chest, right where the iPod was. it bent in the port you plug the USB cable into, so that i can no longer put the cable in correctly. sonce he did not know I was wearing the iPod, so it was a accident, would I be able to get it fixed under warrenty, or will I have to make the other guy pay for its replacement?

i had a look at iPodResQ, but it will cost about the same as replacing the iPod since what happened to it would not be classified under death of the iPod or or anything like that. + I'm in Australia, not the US so it costs more for me to use it then someone in the US

  • IPod not Charging, or Connecting to iTunes when Plugged into the Computer

I cracked the screen a few weeks ago. When I plug it into the computer, it does not charge, and it is not recognized. BUT, if I use the same USB cable, I can charge it using a wall charger.

    You can try here:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
However, if you have acces to aonther computer that is know to connect to iPods I would try the other computer first.  The iPod damage may be causing the problem

i have an ippd touch 2g , a part of my keyboard won't work , i can type letters but i can't type numbers . please help i'm stuck with emojis keyboard

Try restarting the iPod by holding down the lock and home button together and then slide the power button to turn it off and then wait 10 seconds and start it up again. If it is not a reset issue then it may be a hardware issue. Is your iPod damaged or have you dropped it recently? If it is a hardware problem then you may not be able to fix it. If your iPod has multitasking options like the new iOS devices, close out the app and then try again, it should reset your device to letters instead of emojis.

  • Hooking up iPod to home stereo receiver?

Hi, all. I just bought my first iPod, a classic. I wanted to hook it up to my home stereo receiver, an NAD made back in '88. It has inputs for phono, tape, CD and video.
I went to my local Apple store and told the sales person I wanted to hook up my iPod to my receiver. He sold me a Belkin cable that goes from the headphone jack on the iPod to the RCA inputs on my receiver. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work. So far I have questions:
    1. Which input should it go into--tape, CD or video?
    2. How loud should I set the volume on the iPod?
    3. Do I need to do anything with the "settings" such as the EQ or "clicker"?
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a dozen times in the past month. I ran some searches here before I posted. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    John

Whichever one makes the most sense for you (and is free to use). I'm assuming all the inputs are identical apart from the labelling to match the input selector on the front of the unit.
Hi, iBod, thanks for your answers.
The only thing I'm still unsure of is the assumption that all the inputs are identical in terms of the voltage or amperage that they can accept. For example, I know that the phono input is designed for a signal that needs preamplification and the tape input is designed for a signal that doesn't. I'm not sure about the CD and video inputs, and what I want to avoid is having the iPod damage the receiver with too much amperage or voltage or whatever.
    Anyone know for sure?

  • Changing ipod cover (back/front panel)

    Hey,
I need some advice about changing your iPod case. I've browsed the internet a while and I discovered tons of sites that provide new back and front panels. They deliver those kits with the tools to successfully open your iPod. I thought thay could be a solution for me, but also for other people who find their new ipod damaged.
Those full kits retail for the price of about 60 dollar on Ebay, and that's a fair price I believe. You can also check ipodmods.com, but they are a lot more expensive
Now my question(s): is there anyone who has experience with doing this mod himself, so can someone give me advice about this subject.
Do I lose my guaranty when I do this? Even when you put back the original front/back panel?
I hope the community will be able to help me with this one
    Thanks

Never tamper with an Apple product unless it's something that you can do yourself, like installing memory, or an airport card, or an iBook keyboard. I believe it states that if you tamper with a product, iPod included, that your warranty is null and void. I wouldn't risk it, especially if you purchased apple care.

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

If Apple determines that an iPod is not repairable, for example, if it has failed due catastrophic damage or the iPod has been disassembled into multiple pieces, then Out-of-Warranty Service is not available and the iPod will be returned. Please see Apple's Repair Terms And Conditions for further details.
You are not the first to report that, as expected, microwaving an iPod damages it.

  • See what iPod is doing

Is it possible to see what an iPod connected to a Windows PC is doing? What song is currently playing, in particular. I'd like to write a Perl script that takes the "Now Playing" information and posts it on a website. I can't just copy the songs to the PC and use iTunes (company won't allow MP3 files on PCs), so the info has to come directly from the iPod.

  • Partition iPod yes or no?

I've been struggeling to get my iPod to sync and update properly with iTunes since I upgraded to iTunes 5 and iPod software v2.3 with out getting into the details and long list of what all I've done, I'll just leave at this, apple has run through this problem with over and over and now are telling me to send it in for repair. (no extended warrenty) So I've been following these threads trying to find others with simiar set ups and problem who might have the answer that apple does not. Someone said that I could partition my iPod in disk Utility and then erase the ipod, then do a restore in iPod updater to fix the problem. I did a google search and came up with a lot of hits that say DO NOT PARTITION iPod. Has anyone tired this on their iPod? Why should you not partition an iPod? let me know your thoughts and if you have done this what were the results?

Yes, you can partition the iPod, although I wouldn't use disk utility (google for howtos using pdisk). I've partitioned my Nano several times over the past few days for an unrelated project. You can delete EVERYTHING on the iPod (firmware, MBR, partition table, main disk...everything) and as long as you have the original CD you can do an iPod restore and restore everything back to factory settings.
I saw all the posts about not partitioning the iPod, but I've come to the conclusion that those people either a) don't know what they're doing and just don't know how to restore their iPod or b) Apple didn't provide much support for user-restore on older iPods.

  • IPod Nano, 6th generation, need to transfer music from iPod to new computer!

Just recently my iPod went black. All other features work, so I am assuming the LED light is damaged. The 1 year warranty is up. It would be easier to just get a new iPod.
However, this iPod is now working with a new computer. I have set up the device to only be changed manually so that I did not lose any of the music on the device.
Surely there must be a way to take the music from my iPod and transfer it to the new computer? I am desperate for help; with my iPod damaged I feel like I have lost part of my soul!

The suggestion above may work for you. I hope it does.
For future reference, please keep in mind that the iPhone was never intended to be a a backup device. External hard drives are cheap and both Mac OS X and Windows 7 have built in automated backup utilities. Once you set it up, you just let it run.
    PLEASE use them!

  • Not charging or connecting to itunes

I have been trying to connect my nano to itunes (using windows platform) but my computer is not recognizing it through the USB port. I did let my nano run low on power to the point it wouldnt turn on anymore. I did the "hold down menu and select" trick and it brought up the apple logo and then died. I have tried to charge the ipod through a wall charger cradle but so far (it has been in for a couple hours) it wont turn on or even reset. Just a blank screen. As blank as the stare I have when I am looking at it. I have read posts that seemed to be related but nothing has worked thus far.

    You can try here:

  • New kernel prevents computer from booting

i installed kernel26-scsi 2.6.13.4-1 by means of pacman about a week ago, ran lilo, rebooted to find that before lilo loaded the screen had a bunch of "99"s printing across the screen. Once they stopped printing the processor hung. Every time i restart this happens. I booted to knoppix and installed the same kernel again but it still wouldn't boot. so I booted to knoppix again copied the contents of my scsi that i was trying to boot from to my ide and wiped my scsi. I put in the arch 0.7 cd and did an ftp install on the scsi drive. I installed kernel24-scsi since i had trouble with doing a fresh install with udev, lilo, and the kernel26-scsi, hoping that when i got it running i would be able to put kernel 2.6 on it. it still boots to a bunch of "99"s printed accross the screen and stalls the cpu. Is this some kind of hardware issue with the new kernel or can anyone help me solve this problem?

What do you blame me for? I payed deference to phrakture for not giving up. Unlike him, I am tired of asking again and again if one has read this or that. He is constantly helpful, isn't he, while I tend to be snubbed.
As you have not told us you where prepared for udev/devfs - and 80% of help calls here and in irc have been udev related - phrakture had to guess - he did a quick shot and missed. So what?
Let's see if we can help you.
Unfortunately, I don't use or kn ow lilo very well. As far as I know, lilo has some strange issues if beeing used in a dual boot to windows or linux scenario, and some other strange behaviours. Furthermore, 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 etc seemes to be a lilo message that should tell you lilo can't get further then stage one. This can be a damaged mbr, for example, or if windows has repaired the mbr and destroyed lilo, or a physically damaged hard disk. Have you rerun "lilo" or "liloconf"? They will reinstall LILO to the drive and make the second stage loader look in the right spot...which apparently it is not, hence the L 99 99 99 99 ...
As you tried a reinstall using ftp, I think you could try cd based install, to be sure. I would recommend to use grub instead of lilo.
