IPod Deleting Music Files

How does one delete music files from the iPod?

Or make sure syncing is set to only sync checked items and then uncheck the songs in your library you don't want in the iPod.
Or sync only specific playlists and make sure the songs you don't want are not in any of the playlists you are syncing.
Or switch to manual updating and manually delete them from the iPod...

  • Delete music files from my pc

can I delete music files from my PC without having to lose them from my ipod classic. I dont see the need to clog up disc space with all the music I own on CD's so once I have them loaded onto my ipod I would like to erase them from my pc. If I then sync my ipod will it automatically delete everything that is no longer on my pc.

If you manually manage your music, you can do what you want. Check the "Manually manage music" box on the summary page in iTunes when the iPod is connected. Keep in mind that , should you ever need to restore your iPod, you may find that you'll need to re-rip all of your CDs. You may want to consider buying an external hard drive (I just picked up a terabyte drive for less than $150) and move your iTunes library there.
    Best of luck.

  • How do I permanently delete music files from itunes AND my  computer (without going to the folder to delete each item)? It's a windows system. I've tried 'reset all dialogue warnings' as I've been told to do but no luck. Files are still in Itunes folders.

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

  • I had to restore my computer. After reinstalling itunes and sincronizing with my ipod, the music files were not organized in itunes as in the ipod: some songs were missing, some albums has no cover? Why is the sincronization not working properly?

how can i delete music files of the IPhone. I was already in ITunes, but this option was grey!

    Thx Allan, it was successful!!!!

  • HT1660 when deleting music files from iTunes and you select Keep File, where is that file stored and how it is retireved?

when deleting music files from iTunes and you select Keep File, where is that file stored and how it is retrieved?

The file is just left where it was when it was connected to the library. Typically:
         <User>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/<Artist>/<Album>/## <Name>.<Ext>
If you want to add it back just drag it into iTunes. If you want to cull the files you kept previously add the entire iTunes Media folder back into iTunes (or use one of Doug's scripts that has the same effect), then delete (and don't keep) the recent additions.
Note that warning/prompt is only issued when the files you are removing are located inside the designated iTunes Media folder.

  • Is there a way to view deleted music files my iPod once had before?

I thought that since I cant retrieve my 1120+ music files my iPod once had, maybe I can at least see all the music files that were once in it so I can make sure I get every song I had in it back in there. Is this possible? Thanks!

Theres no possible list or record or history of songs that were in my iPod that I can view. Is there a possibility that I can view the corrupted files in "other"?

  • Workflow- iTunes Convert to AAC, copy to ipod & delete converted files

I like to save my music in either Apple Lossless or MP3 (320kb) formats. Unfortunately, when I go to save these onto my ipod mini the files are too large and take up too much space. Id like to try and mimic the software that comes with an ipod shuffle where it can take any file, compress it and copy it to my ipod mini without creating duplicates in my itunes.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to create a workflow to do the following:
    1. Get selected itunes songs (any kind)
    2. Convert to AAC
    3. Copy to ipod
4 Delete the converted files in itunes
Ive looked at some of the automator actions and im a bit confused with the difference of
    - delete original selected tracks -OR-
-delete files of the original selected tracks
that are options with the "convert tracks" or "copy tracks to ipod" actions

For the record, these 3rd party actions are not part of a default Automator installation. They're available for download here.
Now, you could think of iTunes as basically a very fancy collection of aliases. When you delete a tack in iTunes, it asks if you want to move the files to the trash, or keep them in your music folder. If you select "Keep Files" what you end up with is a bunch of orphans: files that physically exist in your music folder, but are no longer accessible through the iTunes interface. You have, in effect, deleted the alias without deleting the file.
And that, as far as I can tell, is the reasoning behind the two seemingly redundant check boxes in these actions.

  • Deleting Music Files

I need to get rid of the music I have saved in the "My Music" file on my hard drive. What would happen if I deleted all the music in that file when I connect my iPod to my computer??? How will it effect my iTunes and iPod??? Thanks!!!

Connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list (it does on a Mac) from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use also a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • ITunes won't delete music files from default external hard drive . . . what to do?!

I really don't want to manually delete 6 GB of stuff that's not in my library but still in the music folder. Yes . . . the external hard drive is listed as the default music location. THANK YOU!

Hmm, perhaps it wasn't when you deleted the files, or there is a permissions issue. Test by adding back a known redundant file, then deleting from iTunes. Does it get deleted from the hard drive? If so, great add back the entire media folder, then delete everything added today. If not...
Right-click on your main media folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
    Now try again...
I also have a script called KillSelectedFiles which is useful when the source files are located outside of the designated iTunes Media folder but In your case it shouldn't be necessary.

  • Trying to backup ipod all music files changed to undf. format. Now I can't see them on ipod or itunes

I am not very tech savy, so when my computer died I tried to backup music files from ipod. The "other" had grown gigantic, and it said to restore it. But I knew that I had to save the files first. New ITunes wouldn't find them, so I tried other software. Now the music files are still on the ipod, but I can't see them or play them! Tried playing with VLC media player, it says it can't play because they are now undf. format. I know I need to convert them to something, but I have no idea how. I don't understand tags and such, but I do believe there are programs to reformat files? Please help! Keep it simple, as I am in my 60's and not very sharp about such things.

How do I enable it for hard drive use?
    My story goes thus:
Put movie on iPod hard drive to get it to my laptop (from desktop at home.)
Can watch movie on computer using iPod as an external hard drive. all good, but the iPod can't play it.
So I take the movie off the iPod and onto my Laptop, and use iTunes to put it onto the iPod.
Now the iPod will play the movie but if I go through "my computer" to the iPod, I can't see the files on there. what if I want to watch it at a friends house? Or on my own laptop. I don't want an iPod copy and a hard drive copy on my player, that halves the memory!
Is there some kind of softwre or setting I can use that lets me access the files on there for other use? I've got about 3gig of music on there so far, I know it's on there as it plays fine, but if I'm going to be jumping between 2 or 3 computers, I'd just like access to my files.
I don't want 2 or 3 copies of a movie, it takes up too much space.
    Looks like I need
A: 1 copy on the hard drive to play through Itunes,
B: a Second on the iPod to play round a friends house (or on my own Laptop, negating the need for "A") as a hard drive file, and
C: a Final 3rd copy also on the iPod for it to play itself, which it hides from "My computer"
If I could just get access to "C" through My computer I wouldn't need the first two (it's not a sync problem like someone suggested)
Why have apple made this so impossible?
My last MP3 player, you just copy and pasted the file. It was more like portable hard drive/memory that could also play the MP3 files that were on it.

  • How do you restore a recently deleted music file from one's iTunes library located on a PC

While trying to clean up duplicate music files in my iTunes library, I mistakenly deleted several songs that I need to restore. How can this be accomplished?  The songs still reside on the PC but need to be resynced to iTunes someway.

Unless you have a recent backup of your library that you can restore, iTunes has no information about the files you've deleted, so you'll need to use Windows' search functions to locate them.  This is one of many reasons why you should set these options in Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
and if necessary use iTunes' File > Library > Organize Library... function to consolidate your media so that everything is stored in a standard, predictable folder structure under iTunes\iTunes Media.

  • Can't delete music files in iTunes

I have a previously owned iPhone that has many music files. I synced it in iTunes and now I can't move or delete any of the selections within iTunes. How can I get rid of this stuff so the next time I sync they won't get re-installed on the iPhnoe?

Update-- A reboot solved the problem. Now when I choose to delete them, it works.

  • My iPhone4 self deletes music files. Any thoughts of what I need to do?

My iPhone4 is self deleting my music files. Any thoughts of how to correct this issue?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Does deleting music files thru iTunes affect cloud/other iTunes libraries?

I want to get almost all my music files off my MacBook Air.  I have read on here that I should delete them thru iTunes, not through Finder.   So if I go in iTunes and delete the files, does this affect what's in my iTunes account in the cloud and what I can access from other computers?  I want to get it off this hard drive, not get it out of my iTunes account altogether.  I still want to be able to access everything from my desktop, iPhone, etc.

Is there any way i can grab the Download Album Art from any other iTunes store other than the UK store, so that the artwork isn't embedded into the music files themselves?
I don't think that is necessary.
I'm bound to the Dutch iTS, but I also got artwork from albums that are not available at the Dutch iTS.
I guess the artwork request is forwarded to a central location (US iTS?) to get the artwork, but it's just a guess. I haven't found any information about how it exactly works.
If your experience is differently, the above does not have to be true for the UK iTS.
It would seem that i need to have accounts at the other iTunes stores which doesn't seem to be allowed, but is there any backdoor way of doing it?
To create an account at another country's Store, you need a CC with a billing address in that country. It is set up that way because the right holders of songs can differ in another country and they all want a piece of the pie.
    This topic explains a bit.
