Ipod device not recognised by itunes or Windows

Hi: I wonder if anyone can help me and thanks in advance. I have my itunes program downloaded on my main laptop and I have been using it to download music and sync my ipod classic (120GB) for many years. For the last few months however my Windows (I am on Windows 7) My Computer drive and my itunes are not recognising my ipod device. This means that I cannot download music and sync it to my ipod. I am using an original Apple USB and cable. Initially I thought there might be a problem with the USB head but when I connect my ipod to any other computer - my other laptop, my home PC, and my work PC - all the other computers seem to recognise my ipod device. Just not the computer I want to use.
I have tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling windows to trying different USB sockets but nothing works. Apple community support is no help and nor are the Apple stores. I have tried looking on Control Panel Device Managers but my system is just not reading my ipod device.
any help will be much appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Hi there:
Sorry to trouble you again with this but you have been the only person to respond to my earlier query with a sensible and helpful response. Following your suggestion earlier I went to an Apple store intending to buy a new cable but thought I would check with the Genius Bar anyway. As it turns out both my itunes and my ipod are fine as is my cable so there was no need to buy a new one. The assistant there suggested that there wasn't enough power coming through my laptop USB port to power my ipod device. For lack of an alternative explanation, this seems acceptable to me but entirely inexplicable as I work off my 1TB external hard drive with my laptop ALL the time and never have a problem powering that. I fail to understand how a laptop USB port that emits enough power to read a 1TB device can fail to read a 120GB ipod.
However as an alternative the genius bar assistant suggested the following: - He said that I could still continue to download new music on my problem laptop but could simply copy and paste the itunes library folder into another laptop to PC under the My Music area and then sync my ipod with that. It seems like a sensible alternative but having heard horror stories of people struggling to sync different computers and devices with Apple content, I would like a second opinion from you if you think this would work. I once had trouble moving my itunes library from my D drive to C drive in the same laptop so the thought of copying my itunes library into an entirely different computer terrifies me. I dont want to lose my music on which I have spent a fortune. Do you think the genius bar assistant's suggestion would work?
Really sorry for the trouble but I would really appreciate a second opinion. Thanks.

Appreciate any wisdom concerning iPod Classic not being recognised by my PC. I run windows 7 and iPod does not register in My Computer or iTunes.  Thanks for any help in advance.

    Does it charge?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try another cable
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, cracked or broken plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • My ipod 5th generation charges when connected to my PC but not recognised in itunes with windows 8.1

Why is my ipod 5th generation not recognised in itunes in windows 8.1?Connection to my PC only charges the battery.

Did this iPod previously work with this computer (running Windows 8.1), and does not now for some reason?  Or is this the first time (or the first time with Windows 8.1)?
The fact that only the battery charging symbol appears on the iPod screen seems to indicate that the iPod does not recognize a data connection.  It's like you are connecting the iPod to USB (wall) power adapter.  It is likely that the Windows system also does not see the iPod as a connected device; you should confirm by looking at Device Manager.
You should rule out a faulty USB docking cable.  The dock connector has separate connection points for power and data, so it is possible for it to connect to charge the battery but not connect for data.  So, if possible, try another docking cable, or try the cable you have with another Apple device.
You should rule out a problem on the USB port.  If you connect something else to the same port, does it work properly?  Preferably, you should use something similar, like a USB flash drive or port-powered external drive, and try copying over some large files.
If the USB port and docking cable are OK, the cause is more likely to be on the iPod (such as a dock connector that is worn out from use).

  • IPod nano 7th gen not recognised in iTunes using Windows 8.1

I have an older 3rd generation iPod nano and a new 7th gen nano and I would like to sync them to the same iTunes on my Dell laptop (Inspiron 7520) running Win8.1. I have also updated iTunes to the latest version.
When I connect the new 7th gen iPod nano to my laptop via USB (tried all 4 ports)  I get the following error message from iTunes:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
I've been through most of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3218  and still get the error message although I haven't tried connecting the iPad nano 7th gen to an older Win7 laptop yet with a fresh iTunes install.
When connecting the iPod nano7 Win8.1 recognises E: as an iPod very briefly after I have run a scan via McAfee. After a few seconds the E: drive disappears and iTunes reports the error message as above.  Sometimes, E: doesn't disappear in Win8.1 but I still get the iTunes error message and the iPod nano itself goes from Connected to Main menu.
Any ideas how I can get iTunes to recognise my 7th gen nano?  I'm not sure if this is a Win8.1 problem or iTunes.

    Hello Abbey,
I would recommend the steps in this article named iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538. While the title of the article describes a symptom a bit different from yours, I feel the troubleshooting is still relevant.
If that does not resolve the issue, then I would suggest this article to help troubleshoot the USB connection.

And lastly, resetting it just may do the trick.
How to reset an iPod nano (7th generation)
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo should appear after a few seconds, then the Home screen should appear.

Try with another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem. Make an appointment at After you went to the Genius Bar of an Apple store what did the Genius say? You said you tried everything that has been discussed here and one action discussed is making an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My ipod does not apprear in itunes with windows 7

my ipod does not apprear in itunes with windows 7 any ideas

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job.
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • IPod mini not talking to iTunes on Windows

Quick question, with detailed description below (for those who want to read on )
Have noted article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93426 stating that you will have issues updating iPod if Windows is not on C: Will I have other general issues with Windows not on C?
Detailed description; My Windows installation is on H: I have two mini iPods. Both worked fine, then one stopped appearing in iTunes. Eventually got it swapped through Apple warranty, but replacement was exactly the same. I can see now that I could never perform the format with Windows on C: but I'm not too impressed with the thought of having to reinstall the OS for a peripheral. Now my first, and to date, always working iPod has gone the same way. It seems to me that the iPod doesn't work too well with Windows? Can anyone suggest reasons and solutions please?
