IPod Did Something I Had Never Seen

This morning I was going to school, took my iPod Video and turn on the hold button. Latter I turn it on, everything was fine in till I was going to turn in it off. It just wouldn't turn off. I try to reset it, the Apple logo came, but nothing happened. I pulled it to my computer then unplugged it. To my surprise, my iPod was working like the 1st generation iPod! It was in black and white. I press the play button, but it did nothing. I waited for about five minutes and then the apple logo came up and it came back to normal and stared working fine.
Does anyone have any idea why this happened?
iBook   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

That is crazy. I have not seen anything like it.

    This is regarding my bookmarks.
I went to click on a bookmark and my bookmark got deleted and there was this little dust cloud animation when I clicked.
Nothing bad happened. I just had to go make another bookmark but I have never seen this happen before and I don't know how it happened or what I did.
Does anyone know what this is?

I clicked directly on the bookmark but I realized that if you drag a bookmark off the bookmarks bar it gets deleted and there is a dust cloud animation. I must of dragged it off and didn't know it. I seriously realized this about 1 minute after I posted my question. No big deal.

  • G4 Blackout-Something I've never seen before; could be end of the machine

I have a Powerbook G4 that I use to run ProTools. Not the best machine for the job but it's served the gig well over the last year. The one thing was that it had always run kinda slow even on mundane tasks.
Since last weekend I've been trying to get it to run a little more smoothly.
I cleared out the hard drive, ran Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, checked Console Logs, etc etc etc.
After some research, I did an erase and install. I finished it up this morning. The thing ran like a dream. Restarts in well under a minute, fast operation, fast shutdown: just like a Mac should be.
Then I was back in ProTools, and the thing did something I have never seen a Mac do, ever.
I got a warning screen that ProTools was running out of CPU and that I should increase the Playback Engine settings, and then, before I could click out of the Alert message, the screen went black. The Hard Drives went down, and now the little rectangular white/blue light at the bottom of the monitor is calmly dim-flashing. Like HAL. I can't manually restart the thing. I can't shut it off. It won't respond to anything.
    It doesn't look good.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there any way to bring the thing back?

    Hi there.
I'm not familiar with ProTools per se, but in general if a mac laptop is frozen like that, I pretty well always start with:
    1) Take the external battery out. 2) Pull the plug out from the back of the laptop. (this will force it to shut down) 3) Press the power button for a few seconds (to completely discharge any power). 4) Let it sit there and think about what it's done for around thirty minutes (or sometimes longer). 5) Plug the ac adaptor back in; Press power; Then the "zap the pram" thing (apple key + option key + p + r) as it starts up (make it do the startup "bong" for 3 - 5 times; Then let it complete it's normal startup.
    Then see where you're at...
In general, I find that OS X is happiest when it has at least 5gbs free of hard drive space to play with - Protools may require it to have even more free so it can do it's thing. Are you sure you didn't accidentally remove a file Protools needs during your own "cleanup"? Also, after I run Diskwarrior on an os x drive, I always then run Disk Utility to repair permissions afterward - Diskwarrior is a great fixing tool, but some of it's ideas on what the operating system really needs aren't quite what the mac os x directory doc has ordered.

  • Ridiculous amount of problems, and something I've never seen before.

I had gotten a 4th gen 20gb iPod for a Christmas gift in 2004. It had a few problems here and there, but worked well for the most part for the better part of a year.
Right around the time the one-year warranty was going to expire, it started really acting up. I sent it in, and got a replacement. Well, its been right around four months since I got the 'new' one, and I've had so much trouble with it, I've nearly thrown it out.
I've been reading up on these forums for a couple days, and trying everything I could with no success.
The main reason I'm starting this topic is in hopes for an answer on my iPod's capacity.
So we're all aware that the 20gb's are really only 18.5 gb's. That's no secret. What really blew my mind was, just a week or so ago, I was having a ton of trouble with my iPod, and when I finally got it to respond, and it connected with iTunes, the maximum capacity was showing 16.4 gb. It was completely empty of anything I would have put on it, so I was extremely confused, and fairly upset.
Well, not even ten minutes ago I went through the same sanity-reducing behavior, and when things finally connected, iTunes was showing that the iPod's maximum capacity is now at 15.98 gb!!!
I don't know what to do, I've tried literally everything I've seen suggested in these forums that I can do aside from sending it in for repair.
If the "true video" iPod doesn't come out in the next couple months I think I might switch to an iRiver. I don't really want to do that, because I have faith in Apple, but the problems I've had are ridiculous.
Sorry for ranting, and thanks for reading.

Sorry to butt in... Two thoughts for you.
    1) Are you resetting the iPod while it is still attached to the comp? If so try resetting it when it is not attached and leave it to "settle" for a minute (or so) before you attempt to reconnect. Make sure that the iPod is fully charged (or very nearly fully charged) before connecting since sometimes the current drain to start the iPod's internal HDD and keep it spinning to synch with iTunes is more than the USB port can support.
    2) I've seen the iPod "lie" about how much space is available - it's happened to me! It's not ideal, but my advice is to accept the iPod lies about how much space is available and ignore it unless you experience other symptoms which suggest that it really is inexplicably short of space (e.g. iTunes indicates that it is full, Windows thinks that it is full and you know that it should not be). You can also try running chkdsk on the drive letter windows has allocated to the iPod - it should detect any problems in the filesystem on the iPod which could lead to it getting confused about how much space is available. These "lies" about availble space can come and go (in my experience) - with no apparent reason or at least any that I've so far identified.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ipod charging problem, i've never seen any thing like it..

Hiya, I have an ipod 4th gen and when ever i plug my ipod in too the computer or wall charger it doesn't say that it's charging, (Like the little thunder bolt up in the top right battery picture, or the noise it makes when you just plugged it into the charger. It's not the usb at all though either, i've tryed it out on different usb's. It still charges though!!!!!???? Plus when i plug it into the laptop, the laptop can't find it our reconise it at all! So i can't put music into it It also says, "This icloud hasn't backed up in such & such weeks" It's also very slow. Please help, thanks, aha.

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Updater for iPod did something weird

I recently updated the software on my iPod for version 1.0 to 1.1, which went fine. The only problem is that before this I used to turn off the screen light by pressing and holding down the 'menu' button, now this doesn't work, all it does now is take me back to the main menu.
Does anyone know the new button to press to turn off the backlight?
    Thanks.

That feature is gone in 1.1. It appears not to be a bug, since Apple have updated the manuals to reflect the changes.
    There is no practical workaround.

  • My question is around the console icon in my doc with the systems log queries. I had never seen that until recently, and wanted to know who is doing the searching on it, or does the computer do this automatically?

Console icon: What is it? What is it's purpose?

    Hello dinakimoo,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Console is a system utility application that can view log messages.  If you'd like to learn more about Console, linked below is the Console help.

  • Something i have never seen before...

    Hi
I have a compaq sg3-320uk with Windows 7 64-bit and every time i start it up i get green tetris like shapes appear on my screen or sometimes it doesn't boot up at all you just hear the fan working, I haven't added any new hardware to my computer it even does it when i do a full system restore. When i look this problem up it always comes down to faulty drivers but surely even if i reset it back to factory setting its should delete everything and reboot it back to when it was first created even tried my old hard drive with Windows XP on it still no luck from that, I love this computer does everything i want HD graphics it runs really fast i just don't understand what's going on. Also I took it back to PC world where i bought it from no help at all got it back and they said everything was fine (obviously not, my views have changed about them ever since...).
Hopefully someone here knows how to fix it and can help me.

I'm an applications developer and also run a part-time videography business. As such, I require more than 3.12GB of RAM. That is the physical limitation of a 32bit system. Pointless to stay on 32bit if you plan on having more than that much RAM.
I'm also not about to pay someone to fix my PC when I can do it myself. I was originally hoping for someone who had experienced the problem before to point me in the right direction so I didn't have to spend so much time trying to figure out what the issue was for myself.
Basically, in the end the problem was caused because right at the point in time when I chose to uninstall, and reinstall; Apple released a new version of iTunes. This version in turn had a requirement of iOS 4.2 to sync with the iPhone. This is a pretty embarrassing for Apple that they would release software reliant on other software before said software was released.
Had I realised I was downloading a newer version at the initial point of installation, this wouldn't have been an issue. I could've easily have rolled back iTunes to the previous version and gotten on with my life.
Another issue is that iTunes is not actually a 64 bit application. It masquerades as one to allow installation on the 64 bit platform.

my ipod touch 8gb keeps freezing everytime i press something and it never lets me listen to music , i tried to restore it millions of times but it does the same thing

How much free storage space is available on your iPod Touch?
When restoring your iPod Touch with iTunes, did you restore from the backup for the iPod Touch or as a new iPod Touch?
If the former and the problem lies with the data included with the backup, restoring from the backup will also restore the problem putting you right back where you started.
