IPod disconnecting itself.

I've been using my ipod as a portable hard drive for quite sometime now. I use it on my work pc and on my home pc with very few problems (or at least, no problems I haven't been able to solve myself yet).
This morning I hooked up the ipod to the pc at work as per usual and everything seemed fine. Then when I went to access the ipod in My Computer it wasn't there. I've had things similar to that happen before so I just disconnected and reconnected it. Everything worked fine for about 1 minute then in the middle of moving a file it just disconnected itself. Whenever I connect it to the pc it will disconnect itself in about a minute. It definitely connects because I can see it in iTunes and in My Computer.
It shows up in iTunes and stays there until I try to access some settings. I can't Restore it because it disconnects in the middle of the Restore. I've tried rebooting the ipod, the machine, restoring the ipod...none of it works.
I'm in the process of reinstalling iTunes to see if that solves the problem.
Through all of this the ipod still works perfectly fine as an ipod. I just can't hook it up to the pc at all to update it. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's disconnecting itself as soon as iTunes is finished with its initial update that occurs as soon as you hook up the iPod but I haven't confirmed that yet.

take it to a apple store, the hard drive is going. I had this problem and when i took it to the apple store, they replaced it with a new one.

  • Ipod disconnects itself

hi guys, my i-pod mini 'disconnects' itself from the PC. i plug it in the USB, it says 'Do Not Disconnect' as expected, then after a few moments, it sort of disconnects itself - the PC can't see the i-pod anymore and the i-pod is already displaying the main menu...
how does one solve this? i read about reformatting the i-pod, but i think the i-pod has to stay connected to the PC if i'll run the software update, is this correct? so that's not an option for me i think...
    thank you in advance!

  • Ipod disconnects itself from computer

I've had my ipod for two years now but i haven't used it for over a year. My ipod would overheat when I went walking and three quarters of my songs either wouldn't play or would freeze halfway through. So i stopped using it and finally i dragged it out again this year (I got it xmas '04). I deleted everything on it and started from scratch, redoing everything on my computer BUT whenever I plug it in, the ipod takes 15mins on the DO NOT DISCONNECT screen then just appears with an apple. when the apple appears my computer then says that I need to reformat my ipod but I can't because it disconnects itself and then my computer says I need to plug in my ipod when it is plugged in! Can anyone offer any solutions on this as I would like to start using my ipod again.....The battery charges fine and it works but I can't put any music on it because of the above difficulties.

  • IPod disconnects itself and not recognized by itunes or Mac

I've recently had issues when trying to connect my ipod to my mac. When connected it appears to be loading onto desktop and itunes. itunes briefly says "verifying ipod" then it is abruptly disconnected. Because I am unable to connect to itunes, I can't restore the ipod. I've tried everything else. I am going to try and find another computer and see if it will recognize it, but I'm not sure I can. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did restoring the ipod resolve it or did something else?
This may be a coincidence, but I haven't connected my ipod since the latest itunes 10.1 update. May not be related, but thought it was worth mentioning.

    Welcome to the discussions,
Did you try to use another USB cable or check the docking port for debris or lint?
I don't think 10.1 is tghe problem, I just synced my 5GiPod and had no problems.
Did you make sure it is charged before you connect?

  • My ipod disconnects itself randomly

When i plug in my ipod on any computer it registers fine and the icons come up in My Computer but then if i click on it it just disconnects.
Sometimes it disconnects before ive clicked on it sometimes it disconnects after about 2 minutes.
Is there anyway of fixing this without reinstalling everything?

THis is normal, When the iPod is set to "Auto Update" it will only be listed in "My COmputer" when iTUnes is updating/syncing it, once the update is done, it will no longer be listed.

    hiya!
okay, since you've got a Toshiba laptop, let's check to see if you can get it to sync properly if the highspeed interfaces are disabled. (let's not try a restore just at the moment.)

  • IPod automatically disconnects itself within 5-10 seconds.

    Hi All,
I've been having some problems connecting my 5th Gen iPod to my new MackBook Pro. The iPod was synced to my old MacBook (I think it was the first black MacBook model) and worked perfectly fine. When I tried connecting it to my Pro for the first time everything went swell until about 500 songs in when the iPod suddenly disconnected (with the error message asking me to eject before disconnecting). I could no longer see it in iTunes and it returned to the state where it's not plugged in and not charging. I reconnected it and tried again and it happened a lot sooner. After trying multiple times, the time it takes for the iPod to automatically disconnect itself is about 5 to 10 seconds.
I've tried multiple cords and have connected the iPod to multiple computers, which leads me to believe that it's a problem with the iPod and not the computer or the cord. I've restarted the computers, restarted the iPod, attempted to restore the iPod (but it doesn't last long enough in the dock for it to work) and played around with the disk mode setting in iTunes. The only thing I have running when I attempt to connect is iTunes. Also, I was able to synced my iPhone to iTunes with no problem at all.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

You get 90 days of free phone support after that there is a charge.
From your description your iPod may have developed a hardware problem and need to be fixed. If you bought it it August it is still under warranty so repair would be covered.
You could try some troubleshooting suggestions.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings to see if that helps.
Turn your iPod off and restart it (press on/off button for 5 seconds or so until power off indicator appears).
Reset your iPod (press on/off button and home button simultaneously for 10 seconds or so until the Apple logo appears).
If none of this helps you can try doing a restore on your iPod (make sure you have a backup). See iTunes to do this.
    Good luck.

  • IPod Classic immediately disconnects itself

I have owned my iPod for not even a year, and I have not done anything to it to cause disruption or error or anything of the sort. Yet when I plug it into my Macbook to sync (or any other iMac or Macbook, checked with multiple cords as well), it will immediately disconnect itself. It is not recognised by my computer, iTunes does not automatically open, it does not charge and I am unable to even reset it to factory settings as I can't access it at all. I am rather frustrated that this is happening to a new device. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey DaDann,
Thanks for the question, that definitely sounds frustrating. The following resource(s) outlines relevant troubleshooting for this issue, it may provide a solution based on your operating system:

  • Ahh, my new iPod Nano automatically ejects and disconnects itself, Help!

I brought a iPod Nano just a few days ago, and when I got home I managed to Sync a bunch of songs onto it. However, now when I try to sync movies, music, pictures, whatever onto it, the iPod ejects itself before I have to chance to do anything!
I've tried re-installing iTunes, it didn't seem to change anything.
I have tried updating the iPod software, but it doesn't work.
Also I have read other tips from other people who have had the same problem. Nothing they have suggested has worked.
    Help!

I'm having a similar and very frustrating problem. I originally synced my new iPod nano onto my MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.5.1), and had no problems. The frustrations began when I tried to transfer a few files from my old Windows computer; a window popped up and indicates that I have to reformat my iPod before it can be used (even when just transferring files).
Now, when I go to use it on my MacBook Pro, the iPod momentarily connects itself but then ejects itself almost immediately. The computer won't seem to read that it's connected and the iPod reverts to charging itself (it's fully charged).
I reset my iPod, I reinstalled the latest version of iTunes, I restarted my computer, I restored my iPod to its original settings... nothing seems to help at all.
    Why is this happening???

  • IPod disconnects & stops charging after syncing even though battery is low

I have a 5G 30GB iPod video, both the iPod and iTunes have the latest software updates, I've only had it a month and haven't changed any of the settings.
When I connect iPod to my computer (a laptop, running Windows 2000), iTunes starts up and begins syncing with iPod as normal. However, if there isn't anything new to sync across, iPod will disconnect itself within 20 seconds or so and stop charging, even though the battery is still nearly empty. I don't think its a power to the USB hub problem as some laptops seem to have, as whilst its syncing it recharges fine, and a long sync period will see it fully charged - I just don't do those very often. Surely there must be a way to get it to recharge through the USB cable when its not syncing?
PS - I've tried the Apple support article on switching on the power to the USB hub, but my 'power' tab on the USB settings didn't have a 'keep the power on all the time' button, suggesting its always on anyway?
    Thanks, Chris

  • Error: iTunes could not copy **** to MyiPod because the iPod disconnected

I am using Lion 10.7.3 with 10.6.1 and an iPod Touch 2nd generation with iOS 5.1.  It all started because I noticed some of my songs were not properly tagged.  So, I went into iTunes to fix them.  Then, I plugged in the iPod and hit sync.  But, it didn't change the songs in my iPod.  So, I decided to try again.  Still didn't change anything.  Don't know why.  In the past, changing the information about the song would cause it to sync again.
I decided to restore the iPod.  When it was all set, I had it restore from a backup.  Then, perhaps because I am mad, I messed around with iTunes Match.  I have some 50gb of music on my iPod.  So, iTunes Match doesn't work very well for that application.  I like it for my iPad, but not my iPod.  Anyway, when I changed my mind and tried to sync it told me that it couldn't copy a given song name because my iPod disconnected.
Over and over, it would start copying and then, after about a hundred songs it would say "iTunes could not copy YourSong to MyiPod because the iPod disconnected."
I went ahead and restored it, again.  This time I decided to just set it up as a new iPod.  It is currently syncing music.  I am up to 300 of 6700.  If this works, I will post that.  Otherwise... what the heck is going on?

So, the restore didnt solve the problem.  I am reinstalling Lion right now.  I have been having problems with my Time Machine backup drive ejecting itself, too.  Some people reported that reinstalling the OS solved this for them.  And, since and iPod, technically, is a drive, too, I thought I would give it a try.

  • 80gb Ipod disconnected on it's own, now has error message and won't restart

I was about to put some new music on my mac formatted Ipod with my macbook, and then it disconnected itself, and the "connected" message wouldn't go away. I pressed select and menu and restarted it, and now it won't do anything but display a message telling me to go to apple.com/support/Ipod with a big red x with a circle around it. It doesn't show up on my computer when i plug it in, so i cant restore it, and it won't respond to anything except restarting, but that just leads to the error message. Anyone know if I can fix this, or am i out 300 bucks?

I forgot to mention that after each step I went to the System Prefs and made sure that Epson 2200 was listed under Print and Fax.

    Ipod Nano   Windows XP Pro

I've been encountering the same problems that other users have been describing with syncing my iPod and automatically disconnecting itself. I've applied the suggested fixes that have been suggested (the 5 Rs, reg hacks, shut down background apps, etc.). I've finally got it back to the point where iTunes will recognize my iPod and the first few songs the I sync (from 1 - 2 songs up to 5 - 8 songs) will get uploaded to my iPod, but then when I try to upload another song or two, my iPod will disconnect itself again automatically.
With 4400 songs and 110 videos to move back onto the iPod, it'd be a pain in the butt to sync them to the iPod a little bit at a time.
I have closed iTunes and shut down the iTunesHelper.exe process and was able to keep the iPod connected for as long as I wanted to. Of course, when I launched iTunes, it didn't detect my iPod.
However, I've been having problems with my computer's power supply in general lately and I suspect that this may be causing my iPod to disconnect soon after connecting to my computer. What could be happening is that the iPod is trying to draw power from the computer's power supply and when the iPod can't get enough, it will basically give up and disconnect itself. This is only a hunch.
I'll be replacing the power supply on my computer to see if that does the trick.
I should note that my wife also has a 60GB Classic and has not encountered any of the same problems. It's been smooth sailing for her.
