  • IPod randomly disconnects when updating with iTunes.

Just got my 60 gig iPod video today, and have been having an aggravating time trying to figure out why the thing keeps disconnecting while updating.
Basically, I selected some songs I want to update, and it will get through prolly about 10% of them before it will randomly just disconnect. When reconnecting, it will start all over from the beginning. It happens at random times, I have no idea what is going on. Any help?
I've tried several different USB ports, all with the same issue.

  • IPod crash when updating w/ iphoto

Ok guys - old problem, new version:
I am synching my fifth gen iPod. I successfully update eveything right up until it gets to my photo (I have iphoto 6.0.5). Then itunes (7.1) says it couldn't update due to error-36. When I check the ipod all the music and movies etc are updated - but not my latest photos or smart albums.
What gives and how do I fix it?

    Attention All,
As you may see from my different posts, I had the same problem with my iPod nano 2 Gb when I ( directed by apple instructions) decided to update to 1,1, had several problems with the synchronisation of files (songs) to the iPod. From Monday untill yesterday had several restores and nothing happened. Then decided to restore and retrieve my older update 1,0, and then the iPod simply worked fine!! Apple should see immediattly this issue as from what I've read a great number of Nanos are facing difficulties when updating to 1,1 !!! Please Webmaster or anyone from Apple take an attitude!

  • 3G IPod Freezes When Updating

I've had a 20GB 3rd generation iPod for 3 years and I was very happy with it until the battery died. The iPod sat in a drawer for over a year until I had Apple replace the battery. When I got the iPod back I discovered a new problem. Whenever I dock the iPod my computer will either freeze the computer (mouse, keyboard and display all become non-responsive), System halt with a hardware malfunction, or automatic reboot.
I'm trying to copy tracks to the iPod but cannot copy more that 100 at a time before I'm forced to restart the computer. I've done a little research on this problem and it appears to be fairly common. I've tried every suggestion that I've come across but nothing has resolved the problem. Here's a list of actions I've taken:
    1) The 5 R's
    2) Disabled anti-virus on computer
    3) Enabled disk mode
    4) Disbaled disk mode
    5) Updated iPod firmware
    6) Updated iTunes
    7) Run chkdsk on iPod (no problems)
    8) Run iPod diagnostics (iPod is healthy)
    9) Connected with firewire (iPod mounts)
    10) Connected with USB 2.0 (iPod mounts)
    11) Disabled and deleted all podcasts
    12) Connected the iPod to iTunes on a second computer (same exact issues resulted)
    13) Replaced the battery
My computer is virus and spyware free and the iPod appears to be healthy. I'm assuming that the Apple techs that replaced the battery also performed a diagnostic on it. The iPod itself plays songs without freezing or resetting and has never given any indication of a problem.
I'll replace or repair the iPod if it turns out to be broken in some way. I do not want to buy a new iPod though if it will not resolve the problem.

I was just having this problem with my 3G. I acquired a USB & Firewire cable a while back and wasn't using it. After many failed attempts I decided to try this. I use the USB to transfer files and have the Firewire plugged into the AC adapter.
I've done 2 successful tests this way, no failures yet. Before & after software restore. Firewire-only failures still exist after the software restore.
Maybe having Firewire on AC and USB in comptuer will help you.

  • Ipod disconnects when editing files

through itunes, I am renaming some files and there genres and after a few, my ipod would disconnect itself and then reconnect. Can anyone tell me why this happens? I've tried googling it and looking around this support site, but nothing came up.

Whenever I insert/mount or eject/unmount a real/virtual disc into a physical/virtual drive, my iPod disconnects, as if it was automatically being ejected.
hmmmmm. it might be worth checking to see if you're getting a weird(er) variant of the issue discussed in the following document:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • IPod disconnects when disc's are inserted/ejected

Whenever I insert/mount or eject/unmount a real/virtual disc into a physical/virtual drive, my iPod disconnects, as if it was automatically being ejected. It isn't visible in iTunes or Windows and I am 100% sure it was safely ejected, but this is really annoying.
Also, I don't have a credit/debit card or paypal account, is there a way I can still access the iTunes store?

  • IPod freezing when updating music/copying files

In the past few months I bought a new Mac Mini. When transferring files from my Mac at work and my roommate's PC at home, using the disk use option on my iPod, it would start to copy the files and stop part of the way through and freeze. There's no way to stop it once it freezes and I end up having to restart my computer. I have tried resetting the iPod to factory settings and reinstalling all my music. I'm using the latest iPod software and running iTunes 6.0.1. When it updates my songs, it does the same thing where it may get about 1000 songs in and then it locks up. When I restart the machine, it has to start from the beginning. The only way around this problem I found was to stop it every couple hundred songs and restart the update. It still freezes when using disk use if the files are big enough. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does it require servicing or is there something I should be doing?
    Thanks!!!

I have been having a similar issue with my iPod since December. Whenever I plug the iPod into my computer to update the songs, it freezes after 20, 30, 40 songs or so. But I think I've discovered the source of the problem, at least in my case, so I thought I'd share it in case it helped anyone else.
I got an AirClick remote for the iPod for Christmas, which I use in the car. But for the sake of convenience, I've been leaving the receiver plugged in to the top of the iPod instead of removing it when I'm not using it. And ever since, it's been freezing when I update songs, but I never made the connection until yesterday. When I remove the AirClick receiver before docking the iPod to my computer, it updates as many songs as I would like (even thousands at a time) without freezing.
So if you have any devices plugged in to the top of your iPod, even the headphone remote, I would recommend disconnecting them before connecting the iPod to your computer.
    Hope this helps somebody!

  • Ipod frozen when updating

I moved 500 cds from my emac (to free up some hard drive space) to an external hard drive. I changed my itunes preference setting in "advanced" to utilize the itunes library on the external hard drive. The library has been successfully "added" to the itunes program on the emac.
When I try to update/sync my 40 gig clickwheel ipod, it freezes after updating any number of files (1489 the first try, 32 the second try, and 4409 the third.
When it freezes, nothing works, even on the emac. Including force quitting itunes. I am forced to do a hard shut down which leaves my ipod frozen with the "do not disconnect" message. Restting it ususally works, but how am I going to ever get my music onto my ipod? Thanks for any help.

    Hello bandock,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried connecting the iPod Touch in *Recovery Mode* and then restoring it via iTunes? If not, see this article for more information on getting your iPod into *Recovery Mode*.

  • Ipod failed when updating

Can somebody help me out here?
I was updating my ipod, and all of sudden it started to make a noise.
i think it was the hard drive.
and then when i tried to open the ipod, it won't start.
it only displayed with "go to ipodsupport.com" something like that.
i'm afraid the hard drive was destroyed during the updating process.
is there any way to deal with this problem?
    thanks a million

  • Help!- ipad was disconnected when updating software...now it won't recognize the ipad and can't complete a restore. It can't recognize the serial # or name,etc..

i was updating my ipad to the new ios software. the cable got disconnected just as it was completing the update. when it connected again it said i need to restore it. Once going thru the restore process, it said that Itunes can't recognize the ipad. one note, the ipad shows on my itunes as a "IPAD" and no name, serial #, etc...  The ipad has a symbol on it telling me to connect to itunes

A System Reset cures many ills.  It's easy, quick and harmless:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.

Finally,  the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less   comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.

has anyone else heard of this? annoying isn't the word....

You may be exceeding the total power available on the USB bus. If that is the case, one solution may be to get a self-powered USB hub. Connect the iPod and other devices that are frequently connected and disconnected on-the-fly to the hub. This will also reduce wear-and-tear on the more valuable USB ports on the computer. You can always get another $20 USB hub. Make sure it is the type that has its own power supply.

  • IPod disconnects when transferring songs

I have an iPod Shuffle 512 Mb.
I cannot transfer more than one or maybe two songs at a time to it.
If I try to transfer more than two or three songs from my library to my iPod, iTunes disconnects and the reconnects the iPod!
This was the case both with iTunes-5.x and also with my newly installed iTunes-6.
    Why is that?
    Am I doing anything wrong?

I have the same problem with my iPod Shuffle 1Gb.
I have posted a similar question.
Apple suggested me to format my iPod as FAT32 and then start all over again.
But all that helped was to erase all songs from my iPod, and then I had to re-transfer them from my library... still only one or two songs at a time.
And no, it is not something with my computer's USB-ports. I have a memory stick, a printer, a camera, a scanner and a harddisk, all usb, and none of them ever does this thing with disconnecting and reconnecting.
If I use the iPod as a memory-drive, it doesn't do this, so this i clearly a problem with iTunes.
I am using iTunes version 6.0.1.3.
